but that's hwi for you. as much or as little you know about her, hwi always greets you with a smile. although she isn't one to approach people herself, she wouldn't push you away. she's not quick to judge others either, often seeing other people in good light even if words of mouth says they're not. hwi always seem as if she doesn't have a lot on her plate. but every one has their own struggles. it's just because of her easygoing disposition that hwi seems trouble free.  

 

hwi is her own person: independent and self-reliant. having grown up with two teenage men, who knows little to nothing about house chores and practical wonders of the world, hwi taught herself the know hows of choosing ingredients when shopping in the market, cooking and the like. she learnt how to go to school by bus and how to fix loose buttons or a small tear in clothes when she was in grade school. despite the constant helping hand (clumsily at that) of her father and uncle, she didn't want to rely on others if she can do it herself. other than trying to not be dependant, she didn't want to burden her precious ones.

 

she was also brought up to be able to speak for herself and always be herself. with her soft and kind demeanor, she may look like she can't voice out her opinions. but hwi is no pushover. she knows when to say no and when to say yes. hwi always stands by her own ideals and the values she believes in, not easily influence by others. she thrives in freedom and will feel frustrated and restless when caged and always get told on what she should do. thus, as she mostly avoid clashing of opinions, she usually kept to herself.

 

being alone isn't actually a problem for her. hwi has long embraced her introvert self. she's approachable and can voice her thoughts, but she often chooses to not open up about her feelings. because 1) she mostly finds it hard to be open to others; 2) she thinks it doesn't solve anything, often sounding as complaints and 3) she thinks it might burden others as it wasn't their business to begin with. thus, only her trusted ones knows her deepest feelings. even then she'd hesitate as she opens up.

once she has a clear goal, hwi works hard in achieving it. she knows if she doesn't give it her all, she'd regret. she doesn't rest unless she's truly tired and often pulls an all nighter trying to get her dance right. as she work hard however, she tend to dismiss trivial matter such as eating on time and overworked herself causing others to nag everytime she's in her hardworking mode.

hwi's presence into the world was greatly awaited by do woojin and lee harim. a pair of married-couple still in their early 20s, living under the scrunitizing in-laws who went against their marriage.

 

do woojin was the resident troublemaker per say yet he has the brains as he entered postech with flying colors. lee harim was the neighbourhood's flower, a pianist with a soft voice. thus, harim's parents never approved her dating and ultimately getting married to do woojin. and as if fate sides with the in-laws, lee harim passed away in 2006 after battling cancer. she left a crushed woojin and little do hwi who was still in th process of grasping the concept of life and death.

 

the do household became gloomy. for a few days woojin never glanced at hwi. she was taken care of by her uncle, do woojoo (her dad's little brother), for those few days. as much as she loved playing with woojoo, hwi was worried for woojin. she tried everything she'd ever done that usually made woojin beam at her but it didn't work. so she spent her days lingering around her mother's grand piano instead of her dolls. six-years old hwi didn't dare to touch it until a thought passed, will her father look at her when he hears it? thus, she braved herself to open the heavy cover of the keys and recalls the song her mother once taught her: arirang. she played the main keynotes as that was her part when she played with harim. soon, a hand twice her size accompanied her play. they took it for another round before woojin enveloped her into a gentle hug, apologizing again and again. since then, hwi became even more attached to piano.

slowly, woojin started to return to himself and hwi learned that it was only her father and herself (at times woojoo) that occupies the house. despite spending a lot of time with the big boys, hwi grew to be a soft lady like her mother was. as beautiful as she was, too. because of that, she was secretly popular at school--secretly: because hwi had mostly kept to herself while others admire from afar.

 

her days went on with playing her mother's piano and watching her father fixing computers. around 2012, hwi started doing covers and composing as she entered middle school. she opened a soundcloud and youtube account with the username hwistle. she mostly uses soundcloud as it was simpler but she does upload a few covers in youtube--often, it only shows her back or an aesthetic close up of her fingers dancing over the keys with her voice in the background. although she had only uploaded for fun, things turned out better and honestly, hwi was surprised.

 

woojoo was her number one supporter and back her up with supplying her better microphones and camera. as he was a junior video editor for the local cable broadcasting company, he thought of it as a little project. soon (till before she was street casted), hwi gained a lot of followers and subscribers, her average views of her covers in youtube about 300,000-s and her followers in soundcloud at around 2,500-s.

 

woojoo had hinted that hwi would succeed as a singer but she only laughed it off. she loves singing and pursuing a career based off her voice thrilled her but...she didn't want to leave her father. woojin's well-being is something she always keep in mind and she knows she couldn't bear the thought of leaving him especially since woojoo was soon leaving for seoul, as he was accepted as a video editor in  jtbc. thus, she kept her dreams of being a singer aside and follow her father's footsteps instead.

hwi delved deep into computers. she loved doing arts but she also loved learning about technology. as woojoo wasn't there anymore to edit her sounds or videos, she began learning herself and became quite engaged in it. woojoo still believe she has the passion for singing as he often sent her flyers or opportunities of competitions and auditions available from companies. but hwi still feels she can't leave her father alone.

 

until one fateful day.

 

hwi's uncle begged her to sing at his wedding. she was hesitant as it was almost the end of middle school and there was exams in a week but she agreed to it anyway. she was to sing a duet with the little brother of the bride-to-be. she went to seoul after school on friday with her father and practiced with the older boy. they successfully pulled it off on the wedding day, even receiving a standing ovation as if it was a mini concert rather than a wedding ceremony. after their performance and the exchange of vows, hwi went around the wedding hall only to get tapped on the shoulder. a femme fatale lady smiled, giving her a onceover look before saying,"haksaeng, have you ever thought of becoming idol?"

 

"...i'm sorry?" was all hwi could say in confusion. 

 

"have you considered on becoming an idol--miss a, wondergirls, snsd--a kpop idol," the lady elaborated. "or at least a singer. have you thought of becoming one?"

 

hwi nodded cautiously once as answer. "why...are you asking? who are you?"

 

"then, would you like to come to our company?" the lady asked again, ignoring her questions. "no, scratch that, can i see your parents? you came with your parents, right?"

 

the lady kept being pushy that hwi became exhausted as she kept ignoring hwi's questions. hwi relented and took the lady to her father. the next series of moments were filled with disbelief, a buzz of excitement and concern for the future. it turned out the lady was an old friend of her uncle's wife and her performance earlier left quite an impression. 

 

woojin, after much consideration, decided to put the choice in hwi's hands. they sat down after her exams and discussed about the offer. he asked her whether she wanted to take the lady's offer. "who's going to take care of you if i go?" she asked. "...i'm not taking it."

 

"if that's you're reason then you should take it," woojin smiled. "woojoo was right--that you won't take it because of me. hwi, i can take care of myself. things like this doesn't come twice. i know you've set your eyes to be like me...but you're also your mother's daughter. do you know how much time you always spend playing the piano? how your voice move people's hearts?" when she shook her head, woojin snorted. "woojoo cried when you sang in his wedding."

 

hwi had a little battle in her mind as woojin continued to list the points that she should pursue the opportunity. then taking a deep, breath, she told her father she'd take it. woojin then contacted the lady and she told them that they should come by the company in a few days to sign the contract and the like. before they retire to their room, hwi asked what company will she be entering. and her father's answer turned her into a deer with headlights.

no one denies that hwanwoong is too smart for his own good. he goes to a science school and his high curiousity about the world can't be rivaled. hwan woong's resourceful in every problems and challenges that comes his way. he's very original with his imagination. he doesn't look at things from one single perspective--the possibilities he generates are things his friends can't even bother to imagine. and he knows it.

 

hwanwoong is not hwanwoong if he's not confident with himself. even from afar--his walking, the way he stands, the sure tone of his voice--you can see woong ooze with confidence. he's very comfortable with himself and doesn't shy away from spotlight. he says and does what he wants. hwanwoong is outspoken and he likes putting out his ideas and opinions for others to hear. he isn't afraid to be wrong, pretty much accepting if he's proven wrong. if hwanwoong is wrong, he takes it as learning from his mistakes. he takes every opportunity that passes by, paying little attention of what could go wrong afterwards. thus, his friends see him as someone fearless.

 

hwanwoong is also good at reading people. he can tell whether you were lying or telling the truth--and it's even more easier for him if you're one of his friends. he also uses it to befriend people, taking note what people like and what they don't. he picks up the mood of his friends and often distract them with something fun when they're feeling down. the people he works with knows how he brightens up the place with laughter. people see him as a confident genius but they'd be surprised to see him joke around. he loves to soothe situations with his wit, humourous puns and jokes. 

 

however, hwanwoong lacks sensitivity. he's not one to tap to his feelings and emphatize. he sees everything in a logical way and often decide objectively. it's actually a good trait when you need solve a problem with a cool head but in times where sympathy is needed, he'll fail terribly. a person who values honesty, hwanwoong doesn't see how people say "it's okay" when it's actually not okay. he prefers to say the truth and solve the situation even if the truth is as ugly as it gets. 

 

hwanwoong is also very argumentative. he loves to challenge people with words and debate. but not everyone can handle his arguments. some of his arguments tend to go too far, leading to a great deal of tension. this could especially happen when woong tries to stand up for himself or others. and it doesn't really help when woong is blunt. ignoring him results in a very angry hwanwoong while keeping up with him is very exhausting. thus, if they don't come to a mutual understanding, hwanwoong will get his way.

 

hwanwoong is also not very committed in his hobbies and interests. he's very apt to turn into one interest to another. he'll be into wakeboarding for a month then the next, he'll be cycling around seoul  with a new bike. it frustrates others as he tend to spend money to buy new things only to abandon it after a while. he also easily gets bored by routine and will seldom do things in the same way.

i. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST?? 

their fateful encounter started the moment hwi had signed the contract given to her and is being helped adjusting to the life in seoul. as pohang is far away from seoul, she couldn't continue her high school in her hometown which results in her father and uncle looking around for schools that can accomodate her condition.

 

they brought their concern up to jyp. he told them a model and child actor yeo hwanwoong goes to school in a science high school and since hwi was interested in computer science, jyp suggested she goes to the same school as woong. hwi and woojoo submitted an admission to the school and she got accepted.

 

on her first day of school, hwi spotted a fancy car parked infront of her dormitory. she thought it was waiting for another trainee or artist when hwanwoong opened the passenger door from inside. he gave a playful smile as he said, "our belle doesn't need a ride to school?"

 

she wouldn't have gotten into the car if it wasn't for woong's manager confirming they were waiting for her and when she saw hwanwoong was wearing the same uniform as her. hwi entered the car and was ready to look out the window to absorb seoul's view. but then hwanwoong started to speak to her and before she knew it they arrived to the school. hwi noted that she should just take the bus the next day but the car was always on stand by every morning from then on for a year until hwanwoong graduated--unless woong had work to do.

 

 

ii. every ROSE HAS ITS THORNS 

being in the same company and going to the same school, seoul born hwanwoong appointed himself as hwi's guide. he showed her around school, eyes followed them wherever they go, and the company. hwi was grateful, really she was, but his constant presence around her depleted her energy. she wasn't used to be surrounded by people and be the center of attention. at least not yet. but there she was, her desk flocked by girls and at times boys. their upfront questions thrown at her. it started from asking about her and ending about hwanwoong.

 

thus, woong's presence have become uncomfortable for her. hwi slowly tries to detach from him, saying she was fine by her own. it took a few tries but hwanwoong eventually left her alone--plus he had a drama to shoot. hwi started to breathe and became closer to hyunjin then ryujin who entered the company around the same time as hwi at her own pace.

 

in his absence, however, hwi started to have a little trouble. as she is a trainee, some of the teachers has been lenient with her and her homeroom teacher showed a hint of favoritism towards her. some have compared how she was working hard as a trainee and still manages to stay focused in class. this caused quite a tension between her classmates and the bullying began. 

 

her desk had been written with nasty words and pranks were quietly pulled behind teachers' back. hwi tried to endure but it wasn't easy. as she ignored them, the more they wanted to irked her. until one afternoon, she burst. hwi faced the group of students that bullied her one afternoon behind the school building and barked out all the emotions she felt.

 

they laughed, of course. 

 

they knew she was all bark and no bite. before things escalated, hwanwoong, in all his glory entered the scene. he jabbed at them where it hurts: "i'm pretty sure it's your fault for being a lazy as* and causing your grades to fall. do not blame it on someone else."

 

as he was a senior (well-known for his grades at that), they didn't dare to cross him even further. the bullying soon ceased and only glares of jealousy and hatred remained. hwi couldn't even thank woong because of it. she was the one who told him she was going to be fine yet she wasn't and he came to help.

 

three evenings later, hwanwoong peeked into the dance room where hwi was resting after a harsh training. he left and came back with a pocari while asking whether she had any assignments she needed help with. 

 

hwi thanked him for solving her bullying problem after a few moments of silence. "my words didn't get to them, but yours did. so...thank you."

 

"did you know?" hwanwoong whispered at her eventhough it was only the two of them in the room. "i was in your situation once. you looked like a sheep going into the wolves lair the first time we entered the school. i thought: she wouldn't stand a chance against them. i was surprised you didn't cry when you were facing them alone."

 

since then, hwi saw hwanwoong in a new light. she still find him exhausting to cope with but she started to warm up and trust him. they began to talk comfortably, hwanwoong often calling her belle while hwi calls him oppa.

 

iiI. devil's advocate 

after hwanwoong graduated from high school, they only saw each other in the company. as a trainee, hwi spend most of her time in training rooms while woong who's gaining recognition for his acting has been quiet busy with drama shootings and the like. thus, in one month, they'd probably cross paths six to five times--and he couldn't really take the time to chit chat. they do keep in touch by chatting though. hwanwoong would send her pretty pictures of sunsets on his shooting place or his latest hobby.

 

it continued like that till the middle of 2017. they, well mostly hwanwoong, recovered the lost time he hasn't seen hwi by buying her lunch and learning instruments plus acting with her. the fact that hwanwoong follows hwi around amuse the staff and the like as they could see hwi is a little embarassed being doted on so straight forwadly. 

 

they got the chance to appear on the same music video: day6's i like you. eventhough they won't have interactions or scenes together, hwanwoong would appear when hwi is shooting hers. he gave her tips and teases her at the same time: "are you sure that's how you'd react if someone confessed? it looks like your dog just died." hwi pulled it off though, despite his constant teasing. and unknown to her, the expression that she pulled on the last seconds of the video had woong's heart skipped a beat.

 

he rationalized it though, thinking that it felt similar to when he acts with an actress. woong didn't realize that the fact he follows her around and looks for her everytime he's in the company building is a sign that he's taken a liking to hwi.

 

hwi on the other hand...she still wasn't sure why hwanwoong sticks around her so much. a thought that he likes her passed through, once. but she frowned at it. how could he has feelings for her when all he does is question everything she does and drags her out of the dorm on her free days to accompany him bike riding (since his friends are too exhausted keeping up with him)?

 

well, love's out of the window. for now.

 

iv. shall we start a riot? 

as he heard hwi might be able to debut as an idol, hwanwoong was ecstatic. but he heard from his new manager (the old one had to take care of new actors) that jyp might take up the same concept as yg's monarch.

 

calculating the possibilities in mind, woong told her not to debut as an idol. he was scared, really, that netizens might be hating on the group and hwi will have a hard time. but of course, that wasn't what he actually said to her. and hwi has had enough.

 

"the reason i signed the contract was to sing on stage and touch others with my voice," hwi argues back. "why are you telling me not to do exactly that?"

 

dumbfounded because hwi was upset for real this time, hwanwoong was rendered speechless--internally panicking, for the first time. after that, they kept their distance as hwi prepared for kingdom's debut. and hwanwoong took the time to reflect on their relationship. he realized no one's ever endured his presence like hwi did, no one actually delved deep into his imagination unlike hwi and how his everyday wouldn't be complete before he sees her. that's when he realized he likes hwi.

 

on her solo reveal, hwanwoong was one of the first to congratulate her and he apologized for the things he's said. hwi said she was sorry, too. he was only looking out for her, like he always does and yet she got emotional. as she said that, hwanwoong promised to himself he wasn't going to let her go.
