daom never saw a need for an english name due to her name being relatively easy for english speakers to pronounce, but leah chae thought differently. when she first met daom, she thought her name was rather weird and began to think of english names, finally deciding on ashley because it's related to daom's power in the corniest way. while daom thinks ashley bin sounds a little awkward, she likes the name, all in all.

her siblings take credit for what is pretty much daom's only nickname: momo. it's cute, though a little simple, but daom appreciates the effort since, as she likes to say, "you can't do much with a name like daom".

searching through biblical names, daom comes across the chalkydri, pronounced kalkydra. they're archangels of the flying elements of the sun who have twelve wings and burst into song at sunrise, but they are also described as monsters by gnosticism. their connection to the sun and their duality resonate with daom, so she chooses kalkydra to be her magician name.

she has a habit of picking out black clothes for the day if she knows she's going to use her powers. when she didn't have much control over them, the ash would stain her clothes and her hair as soon as she stopped using them, so she wore black garments to conceal it. it's no longer a necessity but, as they say, old habits die hard and, as a result, there's a lot of black in daom's closet.

daom doesn't come off as someone who is 100% present, coming off as always a tiny bit withdrawn. it could also have to do with all the rumors surrounding her, maybe people have heard so many different stories they just don't expect her to be this quiet, friendly, forgettable girl that she is.

that's what bearing a secret your entire life does to you. it slowly but surely drives you further away from people and, paired with lifelong insecurities regarding not belonging and not being good enough, daom has almost become a shell of herself, a quiet, friendly and forgettable shell.

reflective and flexible, daom was self-aware enough to start working on growing into (or, even better, out of) that shell but, as they tend to do, her emotions took over her and sent her right back to south korea, home to her insecurities. her brain says she doesn't need the bin family's validation, that they haven't changed their minds about her in twenty years and they won't start now, that their lack of acceptance doesn't define her and she needs to figure out who she is, but her heart is not really listening. her heart hasn't healed from all the isolation, the hushed voices, the favoritism and the lies, and her heart still yearns to be claimed by the bin family and the elite class as one of their own, it still yearns to belong.

that is why any indication of acceptance from the pureblooded community is good enough for daom to throw all her self-validation and healing journey out the window and make rushed decisions, only for her self-awareness to kick in after some time and realize that those signs are fleeting and she regrets those decisions. this isn't only limited to her position regarding the elite class: what daom feels is the best for her is not always what is best for her, and that can be said for all aspects of her life. it's just a matter of whether or not she realizes that before it's too late, because she is capable of doing so.

bin daom is a girl who wishes the best upon herself and upon others, she's considerate, empathetic, she's willing to listen to what people have to say (though maybe too willing at times) and she can be extremely witty and resourceful once her reflectiveness kicks in, but she can't always translate those wishes into actions. what's even worse, her tendency to go headfirst into things, her short attention span and her strong emotional compass paired with her insecurity can make someone as well meaning as her do things that don't align with such good intentions.

rigid, prestigious and wealthy are three words that most people relate to the bin family. the pureblooded lineage owns a fair amount of land in the gyeonggi province and an alarming percentage in north chungcheong, earning the respect of fellow purebloods and upper class magicians. they've got connections to spare and a clean public image to mantain. then came bin daom, and they were not going to let her ruin all that.

the bin family, however, is not the only one that had an influence in daom's life. the chae family is a large, upper middle class family that was once as prestigious and wealthy as the bins. they were once very big on arranged marriages to remain pure blooded (which is, coincidentially, how daom's very own parents got married), so there is a branch of sun users in the chae dynasty that remains pure blooded and they will be brought to light later on.

bin daom herself was born seven years after her sister and nine years after her brother. the explanations her parents gave were quite convincing but, considering how many people benefitted from their public image being at risk, they were never convincing enough. rumors took no time to spread and, from there on, daom's presence in the world was met with much more distrust and alienation than her siblings'.

her mom made sure to let daom know that she was loved and appreciated, so she didn't understand why her own relatives were uneasy around her and why even her dad showed favoritism for her siblings, she was confused when she saw her parents leave for dinner with her siblings while she had to stay home. there was always a distance between her and other people that her mom couldn't quite shelter daom from, and all she wanted was to get rid of that distance.

daom tried to prove she belonged. good grades, perfect posture, impeccable manners, they were but obstacles in her way to be fully embraced by the people around her and she was ready to overcome every single one of them. it seemed her results were never enough, though. not for her mom's friends, not for her relatives, not for her tutors and definitely not for her dad. he was very hard on daom, magnifying her mistakes and setting impossibly high standards for her to match. daom was concerned, confused and obviously sad, but at least her mom listened to her concerns and encouraged her to pay her father no mind. that was easier said than done, though.

the discovery of her powers was definitely a turning point in daom's life. her twelve year old self was overjoyed when her powers manifested, but she was also hopeful they were the key to proving herself and being accepted. they acted as a catalyst for her mom to realize that daom would be leaving for the academy soon and that she didn't have much time left to tell her the truth about herself and explain the reason behind daom's isolation and sadness.

to summarize, her mom had had an affair with another man and she'd gotten pregnant with daom. contrary to her husband's opinion, she was dead set on keeping the baby and, since getting divorced would affect their public image, he could only accept the fact that daom would bear his last name. nonetheless, he and his family resented her and her mom for it ever since, so it didn't take long for other families to catch in on the bad blood and rumors started spreading. it was bittersweet how the one time daom was finally being let in on one of the bin family's secrets, she was also the secret herself.

daom's first years at the academy were a breath of fresh air from all her family drama and they served as a distraction from all her mixed emotions. she felt lied to, sure, but she also felt somewhat relieved that there was a legitimate reason for all the hushed comments and the alienation and that she wasn't that reason. however, that was simultaneously terrifying, because if there was nothing she had done to make her family dislike her, then there was nothing she could do to make them like her. but, hey, who has time for that when you've got three exams next week and friend drama and you've just discovered this new cool thing you can do with your powers?

but distracting herself from those feelings and those thoughts meant they would pop up again sooner or later. when she was fifteen, she asked her mom for her dad's contact information, but she wasn't very helpful. daom took matters into her own hands and got ahold of him a year later, his name was chae seunghyuk and he was currently living in the united states, where he had a daughter and a wife. the two communicated through emails, where he explained that he tried to meet her once but her family placed a restraining order against him. she got the idea of studying abroad and meeting him but, unfortunately, her parents wanted her to graduate in korea. at least they said that she could study abroad if she wanted to pursue higher education.

two years later, after graduating from the academy, daom arrived at new york city to further her education at a prestigious magic school and meet her biological dad (though her parents didn't know about that part). seunghyuk (or "andrew", which is what his wife called him) welcomed her with open arms and leah, her half-sister, turned out to be one of the nicest eleven year olds she had ever met. although they couldn't make up for lost time, they could make the most of the time they had, and daom thinks they did.

halfway into the year, daom's path towards self-growth and healing started. she realized just how insecure she was and how keeping her identity a secret for most of her life had held her back from making close friendships. she didn't change completely but, knowing that nobody in this country knew or cared about her being an illegitimate child, she relished in small victories like dying her hair blonde, making friends and putting herself out there once in a while. during her second year, she thought she owed it to herself to return to korea, stand up to her parents and tell people the truth. she expected it to be hard, but she thought she could take it.

so daom returns to korea and realizes just how wrong she was. she really can't take it.

lifestyle when she first returned from new york, daom spent a couple of months living in her parents' house in incheon but she has recently moved into a single-story house in seoul by herself. having grown up the way she did, she's having a hard time adjusting to doing everything on her own, so one of her family's past maids helps her out once a week. she's started to consider getting a roommate to make some money of her own.

it's almost funny how daom, despite the fact that she's pursuing higher education and she's busy with her studies, is attending many more events and dinners than she used to before. she mainly owes it to her siblings, who currently reside in seoul and often choose her as their plus-one so she can network. there's also a couple of her friends and acquaitances from the academy who want to catch up with daom now that she's back from the united states, so she usually has lunch with them or is invited to the events they host.

after becoming part of the circle, daom will find herself having to put a pause on her studies. however, she'll eventually try to find a tutor to help her work on her ability or just schedule some time to do it herself. she'll also try to meet with the girls on the circle one-on-one and try to get closer to them.

trivia

daom has a thai korat cat called otto, he tends to follow daom around the house and she has grown very attached to him. her mom gave it to her as a present before she moved to seoul (so she would remember her, but also because korat cats are believed to bring good luck).

her half sister leah facetimes daom either thrice a week or once a month. no inbetween.

messy bun queen. daom prefers to keep her hair out of her face by tying it into something not too messy atop of her head. sometimes the results are cute, sometimes they're outright disastrous.

daom is quite adept at talking to upper class people who most likely hate her or putting on her "game face" when at events. she might be a wreck inside but not outside.

part of her family lives in incheon and owns a lot of land, but another part of her family lives in seoul and works in politics. her siblings are going down that route, which is how daom has been let on into what goes on in the dirtier side of politics.

daom has no idea what she wants for herself on the long-term. one of her options is going back to new york, but that would leave her with no chance to tell everyone the truth and she doesn't have the same economic and social status there. there's also the possibility of coming clean and then leaving, but why do that when she can leave without getting into all that trouble? not leaving at all is also an option, but the cons outweight the pros when it comes to staying in korea. overall? she truly doesn't know what she's going to do and she's a mess.

ability tephrakinesis, also known as ash manipulation is the ability to generate and manipulate ash. in daom's case, it goes hand in hand with ash physiology, the ability to transform one's body into ash.

ash physiology

ever since her powers first manifested, daom's body turned into one completely made of ash the second she started using them. she doesn't consciously make the switch– as soon as she uses her ability, her body transitions into what she calls her "ash body". she can't stop this from happening, but she can rid a few of her body parts from the ash. this has major repercussions on daom's energy, however, so she refrains from doing it unless it's completely necessary. she can also manipulate her ash body to look any way she wants it to but that, too, has major consequences for her.

fire immunity is one of the benefits that come with her ash body, since ash, being the remains of burnt or charred matter, cannot be set on fire.

other benefits include the damange resistance of her ash body, since she can take more blows in this state than in her normal human form and the thermal resistance her body offers to heat and cold.

ash attacks

are various forms in which daom uses ash to attack. some of these are most effective when the ash is hot. to daom, there's no difference between hot or cold ash, but producing massive amounts of hot ash can have repercussions on her energy.

ash blasts are the type of attacks that daom deems easiest and least taxing, she just shoots a bunch of hot ash from her body. the blasts can come from her hands, her eyes, her nostrils and . an alternative for the hot ash daom uses in these attacks is sharp, hardened ash

ash explosions are also fairly easy for daom. as their name says, they're explosions of hot and/or sharp ash. the harder version of these are waves of ash that repel everything on their way, aptly named ash waves.

daom tends to favor expanding ash bolts, which require her to project ash that will expand quickly when in contact with an object or a person.

there are plenty of other ways daom can use her power to attack. these other attacks range from producing large amounts of tiny and sharp ash to cut her opponents, using hard ash to tie her opponents' hands together and things of the sort to creating bullets, missiles and spheres of ash.

ash constructs

are daom's way to use her powers to defend herself, constructs can be any type of object or armor made up of ash. they're harder to master than attacks because they require more concentration and attention to detail and, if not made properly, they can disintegrate on the spot. unless they're very big, they are not taxing to daom.

barriers ranging from shields to walls, barriers are daom's preferred way to defend herself. most of these she can make with ease, but it depends on size– she can make a wall for herself and less than ten people to hide behind, but something the size of a small town or as tall as a building will have severe consequences for daom, ranging from exhaustion to having to stop using her ability.

clouds are like barriers, but barriers are made of hard ash whereas clouds are made of soft ash. daom uses them to distract her opponents, to hide behind or both. they're the easiest constructs to make.

daom can also produce clones that look exactly like her in her ash body. the road towards mastery of clones has definitely been a hard one. to begin with, she wasn't attentive and careful enough while molding them, which resulted in them disintegrating in a matter of seconds. then, when her clones could finally stand on their own, the amount of ash on their bodies was too much, so they were very hard to control because she had to manipulate all that ash. currently, daom can manage to produce and control two clones which are molded to perfection and move like humans or three to four clones that are either well molded and imperfect at moving or imperfectly molded and convincingly moving. clones are the skill that wears daom out the quickest and it goes without saying that they can't speak and they don't have a mind of their own.

scattering

theoretically, daom could deconstruct her ash physiology and truly disintegrate into pieces of ash. she has never tried this because one of the risks it entails is not being able to come out of that form. however, she wants to delve into it at some point.

pyroclastic flow

a pyroclastic flow is a hot, fast-moving current of volcanic ash and gas that can travel for hundreds of kilometers destroying everything on its path. they move downhill, but pyroclastic surges can move uphill and over water as well. daom only came to know about them during her last couple of years at the academy and she didn't work with them during her stay in new york, but she has started to practice with much smaller and slower versions of a pyroclastic flow now that she's back in south korea. she hasn't been able to practice her real sized pyroclastic flows because of their destructive consequences, but, from what she's able to tell from her replicas, they're the most taxing of her skills.

daom is heavily limited when it comes to manipulation. she can mold her own ash just fine, but working with wood ash or cigar ash that is already there is trickier for her.

she's also limited by water because it hardens the ash she produces and undoing that is a complicated and draining process.

signs that daom is pushing her limits are: blurry vision, shortage of ash, inability to manipulate ash as well as she usually would and taking a nap once she hasn't used her ability for around two hours.

she doesn't "run out" of ash. daom can generate ash as long as her body and her energy allow her to, which means the only instances when she can't do so are when her power has drained her energ, when she's sleeping and when she's unconscious

now that she's helping me with my ability, seoah suggested i keep track of how it's developing, and its a pretty good idea. now that i think of it, i don't know if she meant i should write a journal. ~~whatever, who cares?~~ i should ask about that later. anyway, it was amazing to wake up one day and shoot out ash from my hands. i can now proudly say i don't leave a trail of ashes wherever i go like i did that day. but in comes dad to ruin it for me. there was the smallest pile of ashes i've ever left near the rug and he just had to turn it into a speech about my lack of discipline and things like that. how can someone be so nasty? ~~i just wish he would stop~~.

its been a while. yeah. family has been ~~(pause)~~ very crazy ~~(i feel like seoah when she's on the phone with her friends saying this)~~, i've learned to do so many things with ash (i can shoot it out of my eyes! it's so creepy and i kind of love it) but today i channeled all of that craziness and made hot ash.
it was burning ash. burning. hot. ash. then there's a chance i might have slightly needed to take a nap, yeah, but this means my powers have so much more potential than i thought at first. i'm really happy about that.

the teachers don't seem to understand that i need to shift into the ash body to use my ability. it's like my abracadabra, i can't just not do it and still control ash like a pro. it can't possibly be that hard to get. maybe i'm overreacting but i don't understand why it's important to use my powers without the ash body. ~~what if i LIKE the ash body? what if i can use my powers without it but i still want to use it? what are they gonna do then~~

they've cracked the ash body. today it did this thing where it moved and a little of my skin started to show. then my vision got a little blurry and everything went back to normal, thank god.
i guess this means i need the ash body. i like it for some reason, maybe because i look less like me. or more like a powerful me. this is very deep thinking here. why is looking less like me a good thing? ~~we all know why~~.

after years of hard work i can finally say i made a perfect clone. i'm ecstatic right now! it moves like a human, it looks just like me, i didn't faint, i didn't take a nap afterwards. i feel so light these days, i think that's why i'm focusing better.
also, leah is going to freak out when i show her. that kid is one of the best things to ever happen to me.

the circle daom likes to believe she's decent at teamwork. her flexible ways will balance out the stubborn members of the circle but her impulsive endeavors will be dreaded by many. seeing how she's been keeping a secret for eight years, it will take daom a while to fully trust and open up to the other girls in the circle, but, at her bravest, she's likely to take initiative and ask them if they want to get coffee.

being in the public eye is what will throw daom off her game the most, because all that attention can easily be mistaken for acceptance, and that's what daom wants the most. everyone wants to pretend that they supported her from day one while speaking ill of her and stating she doesn't deserve her place in the circle when she can't hear them and it's dangerous how much daom wants to believe them. simultaneously, she can't forget she has a secret to keep, but this time it really seems like the elite class has decided she's legit. at her worst, daom will start to consider revealing her and her family's biggest secret.

and how can you forget her good friend insecurity? if daom isn't feeling the best she's ever had about being in the circle, then she may be feeling particularly bad, wondering if, for the first time, she's good enough to be in the circle or if someone as unstable as her even deserves to be a member.

bin daewon & bin chahee now that daom lives in another city than her parents, they don't talk as much. well, she doesn't talk to her dad because they haven't been on speaking terms since she went to new york, not because of the distance. her mom has always been very supportive of daom, but public image always comes first so she won't approve of daom telling people the truth about herself, especially because she has just as much to lose as daom does if that happens. daom highly values her relationship with her mom and it'd be almost impossible to convince her to ruin that relationship.

thermal manipulation & blindness inducement

seunghyuk "andrew" chae daom and her biological dad are still a bit awkward around each other. it's not because he's an awkward person, he actually ended up being far more welcoming than daom could have imagined, but daom left new york right when they were getting more comfortable with each other and their relationship very much feels like it did those first months in new york. they haven't exactly stayed in touch, but daom gets updates about him through leah and sometimes he even joins their facetime calls.

leah "damin" chae is daom's half sister ("step sister? are you evil, then?" "are you evil?" "can i call you my half sister? because if we're step sisters one of us has to be evil"). daom is the youngest sibling in her family and leah is an only child, so they were thrilled when they met each other –daom because she had a younger sister and leah because she had an older sister. the two are pretty close despite the year gap between them thanks to leah being a particularly mature thirteen year old, so even if she's capable of being the most annoying little sister, she's just as capable of telling daom to get her life together as she helps her with her makeup skills.

bin seoah daom's older sister doesn't have much of a bond with her. to her credit, seoah tried to get close to daom when she was younger, but their dad wasn't really helping her cause with all the comparing daom to her and her brother and lashing out her for not being just like them. now that daom has moved to seoul, where she's pursuing a career in politics, she's been trying to make up for the bond they didn't have back then by getting lunch together and inviting her to various events. her persistence, confidence and witty comments have caused daom to warm up to her, especially after she realized how helpful her older sister's confident and no-nonsense personality would have been for her in her childhood and early teens.

hae jihye was one of the members of the circle that daom found most approachable upon first meet. jihye is a little bit... on the fence when it comes to daom, though, because other people's perceptions of her matter a lot to her and those perceptions can easily turn negative if she shows a genuine, close bond with someone like daom. eventually, the two will warm up to each other and, when daom's reflective self picks up on the best way to express her opinions in a way that won't hurt jihye's senstivities, not only will it be useful for the circle but to her relationship with jihye. they have the potential to become friends who balance each other out, are there to emotionally support each other and kick together, but they have to get there first.

evie beon back at the academy, evie was one of daom's favorite juniors. she had made a very good impression on daom and all their brief casual encounters were very pleasant (and she's a shadow type magician, there was some of that in there too), so the two became friends. they lost touch after daom left south korea, but she's glad to have reconnected with evie now that she's back and they've both matured at least a little.

last but not least, it should be noted that, even after a few years, evie's work ethic continues to make daom feel unaccomplished and motivated at the same time.
