appearance » show me a trainee that isn't insecure about their looks and i'll show you a liar. in jooyeon's case, the second the pledis execs saw her at auditions they knew, based on her face alone, that she was worth trying to make a star out of, and she might have been thirteen but she was tall enough not to look out of place with an older lineup. the problem was jooyeon got taller. and taller. nobody's ever said this to jooyeon outright, but she has told herself over and over that it's obvious she doesn't suit delicate concepts and for a female idol that's a big deal.

style » for  a long time, jooyeon has seen herself as a youngling running around pledis where she didn't really have a group of peers to grow up with, so her style is many things but not necessarily womanly or y. she's big on fun prints and oversized clothes. that's why it feels like a culture shock going to fittings for pop girls and trying on strapless tops, low waisted pants or those skirts that are also sort of shorts and feel oddly revealing. she's always thought they looked cool... on her friends and sunbaes, but seeing them on herself is a little like culture shock. there's always another smaller member that gets a fun sailor collar or an a-line skirt while she wears pants and jooyeon is mostly fine with that, but many times she goes on stage showing only her stomach and yet she doesn't feel like herself at all. it doesn't make any sense to jooyeon herself either: she turns ninenteen this year and she's shy over pants and a crop top? she can't place what's off about it but one look at the other members' styling makes her feel like the odd one out... and then she snaps out of it and gives her best on stage because there's not much else she can do. aesthetically, she likes the outfits, they're cool. she certainly doesn't look uncomfortable in their performances, so who could ever tell.

for someone who's been told over and over, for years, how awesome and how much of a star they are, jooyeon is surprisingly down to earth. she's like one the cool kid that transfers to your school: she's perfectly comfortable by herself, but she easily adapts to the new environment too, cracking jokes with strangers and making friends with a the people that share her interests. jooyeon is a good team player, especially in a trainee environment because it's the one she knows best. she doesn't go out of her way to take care of others because she's always been on the receiving end of people's kindness, so more than a mom friend jooyeon is a good partner in crime. she can pull together a group performance in an hour, she'll help you cook dinner at the dorm, she's got tons of tips for cramped muscles and she knows exactly which vitamins to take the week before monthly evaluations. you can see her eyes twinkling because finally she has proper team mates from a real project group to sneak snacks into the dorm with.

jooyeon is highly reserved and genuine at the same time. she spent her adolescence mostly alone, with a few peers constantly coming and going, so she's not one to vent out her emotions. but jooyeon has always been the baby, the rising star. surrounded by instructors who adored her and execs who believed in her, jooyeon's adolescence was miraculously spent in a sort of bubble as innocent as the industry can afford. don't get her wrong, she's heard and seen a lot of grime and dirt –after all, she started out young. there's the cancelled debuts, the execs she's never heard of since the burning sun mess, her friends who transfered companies that get invited to dinner with older men, the girls she trained with who are currently getting treated for eating disorders. but what's important is jooyeon's excitement about performing was encouraged and preserved, there was always a caring older woman to laugh at her jokes and tell her she looks pretty. all of jooyeon's emotions are real, and they have an unexpected purity that doesn't quite match her cool girl first impression at all. her love for the stage is immense, her will to improve is sincere. all the obstacles and unfairness she's witnessed fuel the fire: jooyeon knows it's not easy, but she wants to make it all the way.

the thing about jooyeon is she's not desperate, that's what sets her apart. she's hungry, sure, a dreamer in every way and ambitious as they come. this makes jooyeon feel alive. she can't imagine herself doing anything else with her life, which is precisely why she has an almost unshakeable certainty that her dream will come true, that the one thing she wants is coming her way. while comparison and impatience eat away at everyone else, jooyeon rarely wastes her energy that way. she's always been enough, more than enough, either because she was too young and her potential was her saving grace and main source of compliments, or because she's earned her recognition thanks to that early encouragement that led her to actually work hard and become as skilled as she is. she doesn't have a competitive bone in her body, how could she when most of her (very few) friends are debuted idols? jooyeon has never lacked support. wherever she goes people seem to bet on her and believe in her, she's still the thirteen year old wonder trainee in pledis' roster.

so, if you think about it, it makes sense that jooyeon struggles to see herself in a mature light. she's so used to having the reassurance that if it comes down to it the adults will handle things that sometimes she forgets... she's "the adults" too now. her first instinct is to ask for permission or a second opinion from someone with more life experience, but getting advice from her dance teacher is simply not the same as asking a pop girls member. she's not fourteen ignoring a boy who she thinks has a crush on her because she has to "stay focused" on training, she's an eighteen year old with barely any dating experience. there's tons of trainees younger than her: '04, '05, '06 is normal in the average kpop group nowadays. sure, jooyeon can decide what they're having for dinner, but don't you want to check with the unnies first? jooyeon knows where to get the props they want for their monthly evaluation performance, she'll text an unnie the adress and she can go get them when she's free... wait what is she saying? she can get them herself now that she's eighteen and her parents can transfer money to her. 

she's a good egg, jooyeon. loves this wicked mess of a job and just can't wait to get started. what could go wrong?

- dislikes: cold weather, pineapple on pizza, bugs (she'll let out an ungodly scream at the sight of a cockroach but she's an independent woman and she'll very much kill the er)

- listens to all kinds of music, her dad was very big on cds when she was a kid and whether it's ballads, disco, rock, or 90's kpop that's playing jooyeon is most likely surprisingly knowledgeable on the genre and she knows lots of songs

- hobbies include baking (literally a blessing because she has a sweet tooth) and making beaded jewelry (you know those colorful little bracelets and necklaces on pinterest? she saw them and had to make them! it's oddly relaxing)

- she wears glasses. she can see mostly well without them, but she can't read signs unless they're near or have super big fonts

- jooyeon doesn't have the best immune or digestive system: she can't stand the cold and stomachaches can ruin her day. as the creator i wanna say that this is important, you'll see why later.

THE Story.

background » there's not much to see here: jooyeon grew up a normal girl in ansan. she has a younger brother and her parents run a restaurant that has never done spectacularly but steadily keeps the bills paid. her family sits on the lower end of middle class, no one does anything artistic and no one expected jooyeon would become a trainee: not even jooyeon herself. she only showed interest in singing when she was about eleven, asking her mom if she could try going to lessons after school. jooyeon's mom proceeded with an intense search for an affordable private teacher or academy, and found a dance academy that fit with jooyeon's schedule and their price range. jooyeon was initially upset over the switch-up, but tried dance out of curiosity and loved it. her end of the year showcase was the highlight of jooyeon's life. the very next year some random girl from her academy's uncle gave jooyeon's mom a business card after the showcase: pledis entertainment, how would she like to audition?

jooyeon seems to him like two people at once. she's easygoing and smiley and funny, god is she funny, when they run into each other at the company. she makes him laugh and splits her snacks with him. then there's jooyeon when she's coming back from a photoshoot or a fitting or going to a schedule, a completely different person who shifts uncomfortably in her position if he approaches her, eyes set elsewhere like she should leave any minute now, avoiding eye contact because maybe that way he won't guess how deeply uncomfortable she feels in her idol costume. she's both afraid that the tiny clothes and the hair and makeup will fool him and terrified that they won't work whatsoever and he'll see right through it all.

comments» Lorem ipsum hi hello so first of all jooyeon is inspired by a real person i know in terms of background and character concept but also by me in the sense that there's some stuff that i've started thinking and noticing this year and i wanted to make someone else deal with it... like how you're not rlly prepared or comfortable in your own womanhood even if you're supposed to be or how other people's ideas and specifically other people's romanticization of love and relationships s up your own and how hard it is to fully break into young adult life bc in your own mind you are still a child.... also it was just fun to have a character that's theoretically fully prepared to deal with idol life and then external circumstances it up for them and the general public simply doesn't adore them
