❝ jiejie? ah, she has this ability to make anyone smile. she looks really cold, but once she opens you realize she's not like that at all haha. growing up with her was hard since wherever she went she just attracted attention. she's really pretty so people just can't help but look at her, but there's something else about her too. she has this aura that just makes people want to approach her and talk to her. and she's too nice, so if someone talks to her she's going to reciprocate. she always manages to think of things in other people's point of view somehow. still, she never let me do things that might potentially "put me in danger". she said if i got hurt because she wasnt paying attention she'd never forgive herself. she cares a lot about others, and i think it comes with the fact that she spots the smallest things that might be off with her closest friends. too bad she doesn't speak her mind as much as she encourages others to speak theirs. she doesnt really like showing her emotions, despite having so many bottled up inside her. do i love her? yeah, of course i love her, she's my big sister.

❝ oh when you first look at lihua you'd think she's this ice princess that's impossible to approach. "out of your league" kinda thing. on the contrary, she's so weird...like, once, we were just out eating and she started giggling. when i asked why she just told me that she remembered a meme from a month back. as a friend, she never hesitates to make sure you know how much she cares about you. sometimes i get random texts from her saying she misses me and then includes an ugly selfie of herself fake crying. she does this thing where she speaks before she thinks, so can sometimes blurt out her random thoughts which sometimes becomes an issue when we're is recording. still, she's loveable in her own way. she's very passionate about what she does, and is an extremely hard worker. i still think she should care more for her own health, though she'd rather text me to take care of myself. sometimes she practices until she nearly loses her voice, or until she can no longer move her legs. she doesn't stop until she considers everything perfect.

lihua discovers shinhwa on a whim one day when her mom and dad are out working, and xinchun isn't being the annoying brat he usually is. her life had been regular up until then. she listened to s.h.e and jay chou like the other kids at school, and sometimes would listen to the beyond cd her mother jams out to in their car rides to school. but this foreign language somehow manages to capture her in a way the singers in her country couldn't. or maybe it was the pretty faces of the shinhwa members while performing 'perfect man' at inkigayo. either way, april 21st, 2006, was the day lihua fell in love.

lihua is twelve now, and she's found new loves. first, it's bigbang's "we belong together" and "last farewell" that captivates her. then it's shinee's "replay" that draws her back into it. it's lihua's 2010 new year resolution to learn how to sing as well as the boy groups she's learned to love.

LOVE STORY

lihua remembers a shy wooseok approaching her at an award's show and telling her how much he liked her group's performance of latata in 2017. specifically, her part of the song really captivated him. and she remembers bursting into tears then and there because it was the first time her voice had been acknowledged by someone that hadn't been her group members. wooseok panicked and thought he had said something wrong, and brought her to the side to try and stop her crying. his heart skipped a beat when he saw her laugh through her tears at his frantic attempt to find her some tissues. from then, they became friends.

he'd send memes and make her laugh even when she was having the worst days. he'd convince her to sneak out of her dorm and lie to her manager just so they could go to a nearby park and spend time together. he never admitted it to her, but he liked the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed, even though her smile was hidden behind her face mask. it was always dark out when they met up, but there was a light in her eyes he couldn't find anywhere else. after a year of being friends, saying hi to each other at award shows, and exchanging hugs when they thought no one was looking, lihua thought that maybe she might've fallen for jung wooseok.

a "some" relationship is what her groupmates described it as. they saw how he'd hold her cheeks and laugh as she pouted up at him. his arm always naturally came to rest around her waist, and she'd always place her hand on his arm. they were too comfortable with each other to be just friends, and lihua knew it. yet training her entire life left her with little time for her own romantic life, so she had no idea how to go about such things.

"don't you like him?" said ahyun coolly when lihua mentioned wooseok's name in passing. "why don't you just tell him?"

it was a possibility. but lihua was scared. telling wooseok she liked him would mean ruining any possible friendship with the first boy who managed to recognize her talent, and still supported her throughout her career as an idol. her group was flourishing now, as they just recently received their first win and bighit was finally paying attention to them. but if wooseok, her anchor through it all, left her, she's not sure if she'd be able to continue. so lihua texts him and ignores his question about her day.

"what are we?"

she waits ten minutes, half an hour, an hour, and then she starts biting at her nails during dance practice. because wooseok always texted her back at least every twenty minutes, even if he was busy. but during break, her phone lights up with his name, and her heart falls.

"friends, right?"

she wants to cry, but she rubs at her eyes and texts him back later that night when laying in bed.

"yeah. friends."

she doesn't know what was going through his head when he saw her text, and he didn't know why his response was so cold when all he wanted was to hold her close and tell her all the reasons he can't keep his eyes off of her.

"we can still be friends right?"

"yeah. we can."

they can't. because now whenever she sees wooseok at award and variety shows, she turns the other direction to avoid the throbbing in her chest. and when his name pops up in her phone, she ignores it until she can gather up the courage to not cry when she responds. friends. it was their friendship she didn't want to ruin before she popped the question. but now the last thing she wanted was to be friends with jung wooseok. because she loved the way he cared for her despite being younger, and the way he would hold her to protect her from her fears. now, she can't even look him in the eye. their conversations become cold and awkward, and slowly, he stops responding to her messages.

pictures of them from mid 2018 have resurfaced during early 2019, and even netizens can see the way they're looking at each other through their caps. she's laughing behind her mask at something he's said into her ear, and their arms are around each other's waist as she leans into him. and while most fans are supportive, commenting on how good they look together, when lihua is forced to sit in front of an interviewer, she answers the predicted question with a practiced feigned smile.

the crowd boos and her groupmates smile nervously as the interviewer tries to pry the general public's expected answer out of her. friends. she's starting to hate that word. and soon after the interview is broadcasted, she receives a text. she ignores the first four when she sees the name, but he decides to call her next. she wants to ignore him, but knows he's not going to give up until she answers. so she picks up and waits for him to say his part.

"i know you're ignoring me lihua." he says almost painfully, and she can hear the strain in his voice. "but i don't want to be friends. you're worth more than that."

she doesn't speak, instead nibbling at her lower lip to keep herself from yelling at him. still, he can hear her shifting on the other line. so he tells her, "i probably like you." his deep voice echoes on the other line, and her heart races. "but i'm not ready to date yet. so let's wait."

she can practically hear her friends yelling at her for letting this boy string her along before she even responds with a quiet "okay".

so what are they? not friends, for sure. but it's not like they're dating. lihua can only hope one day wooseok will tell her, because she's being told by everyone around her that he's just keeping her around for convenience. too bad she can't let go of wooseok's proud smile whenever she shows him a song she's particularly proud of.
