name: Kim Areum/Aurnia Kim

nicknames:
Ari ; common nickname, used by close friends and coworkers and taken from her Korean name (Areum -> Ari)
Belle ; Areum has a deep-rooted love for Beauty and the Beast, and is particularly fond of the liveaction version released in 2017. Belle is her favorite Disney Princess, she knows all the lyrics to all the songs, and sings them regularly; used mostly by friends, though coworkers and family will use it when they catch her singing (and Jongin, but she likes to pretend that doesn't happen)
Spud ; another name for a potato, which Ireland is somewhat infmaous for; between her love for french fries and how she'll often refer to herself as a potato and "nothing special", her friends started calling her this after doing some research on potatoes and discovering just how important they are, both to Ireland and in general. Spud is to make Areum smile and to remind her that she's important to all of them, too.
Golden Girl/Lady ; taken from the meaning of Aurnia (golden lady), this nickname implies that Areumn does well at all things she tries, particularly when she puts her mind to it. when the girls are feeling joking and playful, she's the "Golden Girl". but when they're serious and Areum is shining like the gem she is, they call her the Golden Lady; this is used most often by close friends, regular friends, coworokers at the rink, and Jongin.

English ; 100 fleunt; growing up in Ireland, a predominantly English-speaking country, this was technically Areum's native language.
Korean ; 90%; desptie growing up in Ireland, surrounded largely by pale skin, red and fair hair, and freckles, Areum learned most of her Korean from her family, both those in Ireland with her and those that remained back in Korea. she's not fluent, but she's pretty close to it; it's usually slang that trips her up.
Irish ; 85% this is also one of Ireland's native languages, and, as such, Aruem learned it while growing up; she's forgotten much of the most advanced stuff, but as her moother and father both spea the language at home, it stays in her memory

summer job: skating ring attendant

personality:

ENFP. HuffleClaw. Neutral good. Dauntless.
love me
 creative, loyal, social, genuine, charming
emotional, stubborn, shy, gullible, independent leave me

love me. Areum is, in a word, so genuinely good that it’s a little distressing. She’s had a good life -- busy, always on the go, always active, always in some sort of motion, never realy settling for long at all -- but it’s been good. Not being able to stay in any one place for very long has given Areum somehting over a complex when it comes to loyalty.  She’s fiercely loyal becaus eof it, and will fight to defend her friends long before she’ll rise to defend herself. It’s also why she’s so outgoing and chirpy -- it’s easy to make friends when you put yourself out there to do so, after all. A lifeitme of exposure to the charm of her parents, both very much people persons, has gifts Areum with that skill as well, and has taught her to be as genuine and honest as she can be. No one likes a liar, and Areum doesn’t particularly like the bad taste lying leaves in . She’d much rather be honest and forward about how she feels...for the most part.

leave me. For as loud and outgoing as Areum can be, she also has those moments where she needs downtime, where she’s not good with people and she needs a break from all the noise and activity. She may be a social butterfly, but she can also be shy, unwilling to share all the parts of herself that makes her who she is because of how it might be received. With both of her parents often on the move, she developed an independent streak, cultivated to the point that while she can move around and find her own way without too much trouble, she also struggles in asking for help. After all, with both parents busy, and her friends with their own lives, it’s hard to ask for help....or advice. And perhaps a byproduct of how geuine Areum is, how she always puts herself out there for other people, she’s incredibly emotional, always feeling not just for herself, but for other people. And that can be hard, because not everyone understands. Not everyone an deal with it, either.

hobbies:
 drawing/sketching
 roller skating/blading
 hula hooping
 collecting candles & lotions

trivia: (habits, fears, skills and etc)
habits: playing with her hair, chewing on her thumb, spinning/twirling her ring
 fears: spiders
special skills: hula hoop dancing, finding four leaf clovers
She prefers to swear in Irish because even though it sounds bad if you know the languge (or English), it's familar and soothing. ....and truth be told, Areum kind of likes swearing and having people not understand her.
She has two pet fish: Aisling (Ais for short) and Caim.
Her skating rink gig is a job she's taken on part time over the last few summers since moving to Seoul. She first found the rink shortly after moving to Seoul and developed a love for it. Ice skating was the winter version of it, and she fell ridiculously in love with feeling his she was flying and the euphoria of motion. She took to it like fish to water, and now roller skaing and ice skating have become huge parts of her life. In fact, that's how she met Jongin.
Areum is the biggest arachnophobe you will ever meet. She hates spiders, and she will literally freak out if she sees one. The worst part is that she doesn't know why.She eknows they're tiny (mostly) and are probably more scared of her than she is of them (most likely), but it doesn't stop her from an absolute panick when she encounters one.
In an effort to stay fit outside of work, she enjoys learning hula hoop tricks & creating dances/routines to songs. Examples: x x
♥ She has a youtube that's dedicated mostly to her hula hooping stuff. Mostly routines and dances. You can also find her doing some skating stuff here -- ice skating routines and tricks, and funny vlog like videos of her roller skating/blading with a gopro in hand and singing along to whatever song is playing.
She collects lotions and candles. Her favorite scents for lotions are floral. Her favorite for candles are floral, woodsy, and sweet or mellow food (ie. vanilla)
She always has butterscotch and butter rum candies with her. They're her favorite.
She possesses a collection of sea glass and shells, all of them stored neatly in glass jars. She also has a jar of sand and ocean water that she'll swirl around like a glitter jar and sometimes open. It smells of the ocean, of back home, and it's her go to when she's homesick.
She loves to sing. Areum has a really nice voice, and can often be caught singing, but if you put her on the spot when she's not expecting it and she's in one of her less confident moments, she's liable to shy away.
♥ When she's on the go, she always had a water bottle with her. 99% of the time, it has lemon water or sweet tea in it.
Despite living briefly in France, Japan, and China, Areum doesn’t remember much of the languages. If pressed, she could probably manage a shaky greeting in Mandarin or French. Her Japanese is better, but only because she enjoys watching anime. ...and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. It’s largley been swallowed up by learning more advanced Korean.
Areum is attending university for art. Right now she doesn't have a focus, but she's leaning toward ceramics or 2D (painting/sketching). It's one of the few things in her life that she can't imagine herself living without.
Areum's never had a boyfriend before. She's never really found anyone she was interested in. She's had crushes, all girls do, but never a real want to date anyone. But this summer, she, like all the other girls, wants to find herself the perfect boyfriend to complete a perfect summer.
She enjoys watching anime, but doesn't do it often. It's too hard to sit still. She can manage maybe one or two episodes each day. More than that, and she goes stir-crazy. Her favoites are: My Hero Academia, Naruto, and Full Metal alchemist.
She walks pretty much everywhere. And if she's not walking, she uses her bike or her roller blades. She doesn't like cars. Or buses.

face claim ( +backup ): Loona Heejin ( + Loona Cheorry, Loona Gowon)

style: She likes to wear clothing that’s comfortable and remminds her of home. A lot of it is pretty Americanized -- English phrases, American brands like Converse and Maurices, Harry Potter attire (a proud Hufflepuff!), etc.  But more important is the fact that it’s comfortable, that it’s cute,  colorful, and that it fits her general style. Jeans are a staple in her wardrobe, as are cute tees and tank tops in the summer months. She also tends to layer them with jackets -- flannel, jean, floral -- and have a soft spot for anything loose and flowy. Dresses and long skirts aren't very common. She only has one constant as far as jewelry goes -- an infinity ring (given to her by her parents on her last birthday). As far as makeup goes, she prefers a more simple approach, with minimal eyeshadow and foundation, and just a little bit of eye liner. She prefers more of the fresh look. x x x x x

appearance: Areum  is a slight and slender young woman, with a physique toned from years of an outdoor lifestyle. Despite sitting at an average height and almost average weight of 164 cm and 50 kg, due largely to a high metabolism and a high level of activity, Areum often appears taller or "larger" until you get up closer. Her friends joke that this is largely because of her loud, upbeat personality and how "larger than life" she appears. She has a number of small, mostly unnoticeable scars located across her palms, her elbows, and her knees, but they’re well faded and silver with age, earned during a busy and sporty childhood. Her earlobes are pierced twice each and she has two outer helix piercings in her right ear and one in her left.

family relationship:

♥ Father | Kim Seongmin | 44 | architect | 9
Areum is such a daddy's girl. She loves him fiercely and she takes his advice almost like law. If he tells her something, then surely it must be true. (Thankfully, he's long-since learned not to take advantage of his daughter's rigid, gullible nature.) The two of them are often together when he's not at work. With Aurelie often away for work, Seongmin was the one that inspired Areum to develop her own taste for life and expressve outlets, including her fashion choices, her love for hula hooping and skating, and sketching. The onyl problem is that Seongmin is very much a male, and it's hard to talk to him about....feminine things. He'll do it, don't get him twisted. It's just odd. Talking to dad about boys? No, thanks.

♥ Mother | Aurelie Kim | 38 | photographer | 7.5
Areum loves her mother, too, though not quite as much as she loves her father. While they were often on the move for Seongmin's work as a highly sought-after architect, Aurelie was often busy and on the go as well, taking pictures of local attractions, nature parks, and other interests and sending them to various magazines and tourist websites for articles and reviews. Aurelie wasn't around as much as Seongmin was, and while it's something Areum loves about her mother, it does make things hard sometimes. Aurelie wasn't there when Areum was learning how to do her makeup...so she taught herself, and it's part of why she prefers a more natural look. Aurelie also wasn't there to teach her fashion -- it was somehting Areum learned herself, picked up through time and experimentation and exposure to her friends. And even now, Aurelie's not around when Areum needs to talk to her about somehting only another girl can advise her on: boys.

♥ Squad (to be added to)
[Tempo; NAME] age | 8 ;; Areum and Tempo get along well enough, perhaps the best in the group. They're similar in some ways. Tempo is a little lazy, true, but it's how bright and carefree she is that Areum loves. She lives in the moment, the now, refusing to get bogged down on things. It's just...sometimes she worries. Tempo hasn't had things easy with her love life, one of the reasons why Areum hasn't had any interest in finding a love for herself.
[Baby Don't Cry; NAME] age | 9 ;; The mom of the group, Areum looks to BDC like she would an elder sister. As an older child, Areum has a lot of moments where she finds herself wishing for a sibling to go to someone, to offer advice in fashion and makeup...and boys. BDC offers Areum not ust that sibling-like comfort, but also mom-like comfort that Areum doesn't necessarily get from her own family. Areum goes to her for...pretty much everything. Areum likes to help her cook when she has the chance, because BDC is amazing int he kitchen, and there's nothign quite like seeing someone so in their element.
[Overdose; NAME] age | 7 ;; Areum absolutely envies Overdose's confidence. Sure, she's confident, and she's got the easy-going charm and smile to back it, but she's not confident like Overdose. Overdose has that confident, mature, -on-legs sort of deal going, and even though Areum knows she can't pull it off herself, she still admires Overdose's ability to exude that sort of confident power. Overdose si the one Areum tends to go to when she needs advice on things like makeup and standing out.
[Miracles in December; Song Ahnjong] 19 y/o | 8 ;; Despite the relative closeness of their ages, Areum isn't quite sure how she feels about Ahn sometimes. Ahn's had a hard life, and even though Areum doesn't get it....she tries to get it? She can't imagine her father dying, and she definitely can't imagine the two of her parents not being ridiculously in love with each other. That's the entire basis of her youth, their love. So she tries hard to see Ahn's point of view, include her, and do what she can to make her smile. It's a personal goal. It helps that Ahn's into surfing, cause then at leats it gives them the chance to bond over the ocean. (not so much surfing. despite all her time by the ocean, Aruem is hilariously bad)

family background:

Born in Dublin, Ireland to Korean-born Kim Seongmin and Ireland-native Aurelie Matthews, Areum’s childhood is far from normal, and yet entirely enchanting. Her parents are busy individuals, but they cut down on their activity for the first few years of Areum’s life in order to be with her. But by age five, Areum’s childhood in Ireland is disrupted in a move to Paris, France. Two years later, to design a new building for a firm loyal to his work, Areum’s father moves them to Beijing. Three years, and they move to Tokyo, Japan. Two more years, and they’re in the United States -- New York City, specifically

With how much the family moved around, much of Areum’s childhood is a blur. She can still recall streets they lived on, the addresses of their home and her schools, the lights of the cities, the food. But she doesn’t remember the people as much, or the languages. She lost track of the friends she made, and with how often they moved, keeping in touch via letters was often harder than she expected it to be.

At age twelve, the family moves once more, this time to Busan, South Korea. Here, for the first time in her life, Areum meets her father’s side of the family. They’re quiet folk, and painfully traditional, and immediately, Areum feels stifled and ill at easy. Seongmin’s parents don’t approve of Aurelie, or of Areum, and they tell Seongmin that he should have settled down with a “nice Korean girl,” one they would have been happy to find for him. They tell Seongmin that he should have known better than to bring home a mixed-breed baby.

It’s the only time Areum can remember her father yelling.

After eighteen months of Incheon and living too close to relatives that resent her for existing, the family move again, this time resettling in Seoul. And for a while, lfe is so much better.

By the time Areum turns fourteen, she’s made friends, a group of girls that she loves fiercely and unappologetically. Although Areum’s still young, and much of her time was spent in school, much of her free time is dedicated to her friends. An only child, they’re like sisters to her, and Areum adores them. When she needs advice, they’re the ones she goes to, and when they need a smile, she likes to think she’s the one they think of.

Summer’s arrival is both timely and fortuitous. Summer is when the girls all have more time for eahc others, days spent relaxing by a campfire, stargazing, and racing down empty roads at midnight with the windows down and the music turned up loud. This is supposed to be a perfect summer -- no, the perfect summer. This is the summer where everyone’s happy and all their dreams come true. Period, end of discussion.

So why isn’t everyone happy?

love interest (+backup) : Kim Jongin ( +Chanyeol)

age: 25

personality: Quiet, shy, and soft-hearted, Jongin is hardly the person that stands out to you at first meeting. No, it’s the second meeting that he really jumps out at you, and the third that you begin to fall a little bit in love with his gummy smiles and shy laughter. But that first meeting, that’s where you’re hooked without even knowing it. More often than not, Jongin is sweet and gentle. He’s the sort of boy that brings you flowers, and gets caught staring at you when he thinks you’re not looking, and is quick to remind you of how beautiful and wonderful you are. He’s quick to pounce on opportunities to praise, and quicker still to find ways to show his love. But he’s not perfect. He’s human. He’s finds it hard to express himself sometimes, and he’s emotional about things that really shouldn’t matter, and he has a bit of a temper sometimes. Not everything is going to go his way -- never everythign can go his way. That’s life. But he tries, it’s the fact that he tries and genuinely wants to be a good person that makes all the difference.

Now, that’s not to say that Jongin is always shy smiles and bright laughter. Sometimes he’s the devil’s work, all toothy grins and sharp edges, the sort of boy you can’t bring home to your parents. Jongin is that, too. When he gets into something he loves -- dance, video games, whatever he’s focusing on at the time -- and he’s really into it, he gets into a zone, and there’s no dragging him out until he’s good and ready. His dedication is overwhelming, as is his passion, but it’s such a beautiful thing to witness. Could you really ask for anything more?

how will you meet: Jongin and Areum meet at the skate rink where she works part time over the summer. Areum is there for her shift, patroling the rink, and Jongin is there with his friends, goofing off during the birthday party for one of their siblings. Under normal circumstances, Jongin is inherently graceful, as elegant and statuesque as a deer or gazelle. On roller skates, Jongin is all graceless, flailing limbs and a very hilarious lack of equilibrium. Areum watches him go down twice in the space of seconds before skating over to help pull him back to his feet.

A girl of her size, totally at ease on rolling wheels of death, destruction, and mayhem, pulling an over-sized boy with akimbo legs and flailing arms to his feet? It’s a sight to see. Jongin’s friends are laughing. The children at the rink are skating circles around them, laughing and cheering him on. And Areum.. .Well, she’s not helping much. But she is helping. She makes sure he gets over to the side where there’s a wall and something like a safety rail before she returns to work. And for the rest of his time there, he watches her. Very little of it is spent skating. But he does watch her. And at the end of the day, as the ring begins to close down, he watches her take a couple last laps. Her shift over, the rink clear of small children and unbalanced adults, she slingshots around the enclosed space, facing both front and then back, balanced carefully on one foot with her arms spread like a ballerina or bird preparing for flight. And when she leaves with one of her friends, he watches her still.

interaction:

Over the course of the summer, Jongin visits Areum at the skating rink more and more often. Of course, he pretends he’s not there for her. Oh, my friends are supposed to meet me here and well, I’m just here to play the accade games. It would be cute if that worked. But it’s hard to mistake the way he watches her, and the way he singles her out to show her how he’s improving on his skates. Granted, she’s still leagues ahead of him, but it’s worth it to see Areum smile, to see her pride when he shows how he can skate away from the wall and safety rail and not fall like a top-heavy tree. And then being able to not trip over screeching children and appear avguely competent it a plus.

“Go out with me.”
“....what.”
“On a date. With me. Go out on a date with me.”
“....why?”
“........because I like the way you smile. And I’d like to see you smile more.”

Jongin asks Areum out a couple weeks into the summer. And it’s surprising, but cute. But surprising. Aruem agrees, and then immediately panics. Having never had a boyfriend before, much less a first date, she goes to the others BDC moms her a ridiculous amount, Ahnjong and Overdose are ridiculously awkward about it, and Tempo is...odd. But between the four of them, they make it work.

Their first date is somewhere away from the skate ring, and Areum loves every minute of it. When Jongin asks for a second date in a few days at the end of the night, Areum agrees. He doesn’t try to kiss her. Maybe he knows. And maybe she’s a little infatuated by it. And thus begins their romance.

A month or so down the line,  with summer perhaps halfway over, Areum gets the news: her father has a new job lined up. By summer’s end, the family will be packed up and moving to Dubai. After the fiasco with her father’s side of the family, Areum has expected a move, but she hadn’t expected the timing. No, during her pefect summer with her best friends and the boy she really likes? Now, when she’s thinking about universities and a real job and making her way into the world? Now, when Jongin’s smile makes her stomach do flips and send her heart up into ?

Areum doesn’t want to leave. Despite having always been the perfect daughter, the perfect little girl, independent and capable and willing to stay out of trouble so her parents have an easy time, Areum begins to distance herself, acting out and making a statement to show that she’s nobetter t okay with their plan to leave. And with a month left to go, having finally gotten his parents’ attention, she introduces them to Jongin. Rather, she introduced Jongin to them....and as soon as he leaves that night, everything hits the fan.

“He’s too old for you.”
“You’re too young for him.”
“But I like him!”
“You’re like other boys, Aurie.”
“But mom--”
“Your mother is right, honey. He’s much to old for you. Besides, what are you planning on doing? We can’t just leave you here!”
“Why not?!”

Why not, indeed. Seongmin tells her it’s because it’s not right, to just abandon her to a country while they go away for work. How will she pay for things -- textbooks, classes? What about the expenses of living off campus with the girls, paying for rent, food, other bills. They'd been helping her before, giving her an allowance that allowed her to pay her part of the bills while she focused on her academics and maintaining a high GPA. Areum counters with saying she’ll get a better job for the rest of the summer, and then a good part-time job during the school year, maintain her grades, get more scholarships, do extra projects. Whatever necessary.

And if she needs help, Seongmin asks, where will she go if she's sick or hurt, or if she can't pay her side of things? What will she do if she can't do it alone? She can ask the girls for help if she needs to. Like with budgeting for bills and easy and cheap food recipes from BDC, help from Tempo or MID with finding a better job, maybe help with finding suitable transport from Ahnjong so she can be more mobile. Something. Anything. Whatever it takes to make it work. She so desperately wants to make it work, but she also needs their approval.

But her parents refuse. She’s still so young, their baby girl. And despite all of her independence, they've never been apart like that, a distance spanning continents and oceans rather than just kilometers.

She's an adult. Legally, they can't make her do anything. But guilt from a parent is like a poison, and Areum has never been good at telling her father -- or her mother -- no. She loves them too much. But her plans for a perfect summer with the girls are still on, and she has more important things to do than wallow in misery in her room and cry. She has roadtrips to take, stars to gaze at, an ocean to swim in and a beach to walk. Memories to make. And a pretty boy to kiss. With one month to go, Areum begins planning Operation Breakout. She gets help from the other girls, gets help from Jongin, and enjoys the time they have left as she counts down the days.

If she wants to do this -- stay in Korea, stay with the girls that have become her best friends, stay wth Jongin.... She has to prove she's able to. And she has to get her parents' blessing. That means obtaining transportation, finding a job, getting scholarships, and proving -- not just to them, but also to herself -- that she is as golden as her name suggests, and as fierce and strong as she's been raised to be.

The only question..... Will it work?

the ending: A happy ending would be wonderful, like Areum getting to stay in Seoul with her friends and her boy, and her parents decide to let her had that independence because she's proven that she can handle it. And everything works out. I'm a er for happy endings. but not everyone gets to be happy, so whatever works best for the story!
