ZHU ZHIHUI

personality

CRYBABY
"i swear i'm not crying--(she sniffles)"

+ ; hardworking, considerate, empathetic, kindhearted, attentive, optimistic
soft-spoken, emotional, temperamental, sensitive, skittish, dependent ; -

"if i smile through it all, it'll be okay!"
INFP, slytherpuff, scorpio

you can typically find zhihui with a smile on her face. not because she's always happy--if anything, it's the opposite of that. she wears her warm smile to hide her twitching eyebrow at the fact that a customer just splashed his hot tea all over her favorite hoodie. she's mad, but she's smiling to try and bury that anger she feels. she smiles to try and divert the attention away from the tears welling up in her eyes when she misses home a little bit more than usual. zhihui smiles through everything, because for some reason, everything in the world seems to terrify her.

she's easily scared, and because of that, always fears stepping out of her comfort zone without someone to guide her through new things. having grown up being protected her entire life, she doesn't know how to do many things without someone to help her through it. she's almost like a child in an adult's body, trying to learn how to grow up as quick as she can. she doesn't speak up much, usually not wanting to voice her feelings or her thoughts out of fear of what others may think of them. if someone disagrees with her, she shuts up immediately and takes it to heart when they might've meant it as constructive criticism. she always goes through three stages of grief when her feelings are hurt (which is much too often): anger, sadness, then acceptance. she soon realizes that maybe they didn't mean it the harsh way she had imagined. while it takes others maybe seconds to realize that, it takes zhihui a few hours.

still, zhihui is trying to overcome all these obstacles she set for herself. her whole goal after coming to korea was to grow as a human being--away from her overbearing family. yet being a crybaby might have its perks. she understands other people's emotions more than they understand themselves. she's a good listener, and always provides good advice from an emotional standpoint. most of her friends go to her when they need to be comforted. she's known to give good hugs, after all.

zhihui, once she opens up, loves hard. she is always looking at the good sides of people, rarely regarding their bad traits. she cares deeply for her friends and loved ones and is always there if she sees them in distress. she's emotionally intelligent when it comes to others, and is slowly starting to teach herself to become more in touch with her everchanging emotions. and maybe to stop crying so much by herself just because of something a customer said about her stained hoodie. she even stops smiling as mmuch, and you see her angry pout more often, which is the sure sign that you have gotten past her smiley walls.

background

zhu zhihui grew up with a loving mother, a loving father, and a loving older brother. maybe too loving, because they never let her out of their sights. she was protected from the cruel world, and when she first encountered it, she burst out into tears and denied it as much as she could. this sensitivity and tendency to be overly emotional never changed, until her exhausted mother decided it was time for her daughter to grow up.

"what do you think about studying abroad in korea with your brother?"

zhihui wanted to cry again, but the look her usually loving mother gave her stopped her from even speaking her mind. she had been so used to being trapped in her room, playing video games with her closest friends, anything outside of that terrified her. her brother, zhihao, had been studying at seoul university on his own for a year now, and apparently her mother wanted her to join him to find her own sense of independence. this was a nightmare, but seventeen year old zhihui just nodded her head meekly and started the application process to korean universities.

she had always been booksmart, so she was accepted into seoul university, and moved into her brother's apartment a month after she graduated from high school. she left most of her friends behind to live in a world she didn't know. she had learned korean years back along with her brother, who always knew he wanted to go to korea for university, so she didn't have much trouble with language barriers despite stumbling over her words a few times. and even when she first moved in, the first thing she did was open up her laptop and log onto league of legends in hopes of crying to her best friend about how unfair her life was. but her first obstacle in korea came in the form of a text her mom sent her.

"find your own job, and pay your portion of the rent. don't rely on your brother to financially support you. your father and i are already paying half of it, the two of you just have to pay the other half."

it took her a month to gather up to courage to start applying to jobs, and another month to finally be accepted at a little flower shop a few blocks from her and zhihao's apartment. she worked there for a few months, where she became comfortable with the older woman who owned it and the one other part timer that worked there--a young man who soon became her second obstacle.

min yoongi was easy to fall in love with, but harder to fall out of love with. they dated for four months, and she felt herself becoming at home with this foreign country that she was practically forced to live in. to her, he was home. he introduced her to his friends, and she finally felt like she could become more outgoing and willing to experience new things. he showed her sights she had never seen before, and those sights came with her first taste of heartbreak.

he grew distant, and soon told her a few weeks into their fourth month together that he fell out of love with her. she didn't want to believe it--clung onto him for days after despite how harshly he tried to kick her out of his life. he ignored her texts, and stopped talking to her at work no matter how much she cried. soon, she reached her third stage of grief--acceptance. with that, she reluctantly quit her job at the cute little flower shop and decided it was time for her to find another job.

still, she'd never forget that it was yoongi that taught her many things. the beauty of simple things, the ability to speak her own opinion without worrying what others think, and the strength to reach out to others when she's in pain instead of hiding from her problems. maybe this is what her mother wanted her to learn when encouraging her to leave home and fend for herself.

she found herself applying to a cafe she had been frequenting. doogi was a youtuber she had used to watch when she first moved to korea, but now only ocassionally clicked on whenever his videos came up on her feed. still, even if she didn't often play games there, it had been a nice place to relax and do her homework while people watching. it was a place she had taken yoongi to, yet was too attached to to let go. so with a braver heart, she submitted her application and waited for a call about an interview with much anxiety.

until then, her daily life returned to her typical routine without yoongi in it. she'd wake up and go to her classes, maybe doing homework between blocks at mp! gaming cafe. then, she'd come home and clean up or cook dinner for her and her brother, depending on who's in charge that night (dictated by a marked calendar hung up in the kitchen). after, she'd finish up her homework and spend most of her free time playing league of legends with her friends from home, or playing mario kart with her older brother before falling asleep. she spent most weekends with her brother and his friends, and sometimes even had the courage to go out when her classmates invite her.

her life had always been rather uneventful, but she's learning to grow as a person. she can only hope there will be people to help her along the way, just as yoongi had.

trivia
league of what now; zhihui has a problem. she hates league of legends, but she can't stop playing it. she plays mmo's as well, and various other games, but always return to league. why? even she doesn't know. she's platinum iv though, and she can proudly say she got herself there without anyone boosting her.
typical friday night; her headset on, glaring at the screen, and yelling at the enemy jungler. she thinks her anger issues may have stemmed from league.
CURSES!; you wouldn't think so when looking at her, but she has a horrible potty mouth.
JEWELERY; can usually be found wearing a bracelet or a ring since she fiddles with whatever's in her hands when she's nervous.
THIS IS A COMPETITION; extremely competitive when playing any game for some reason. she once pushed her cousin off the bed because he ed her over in "sorry!"
CHINESE; though she's good at korean, when she's upset she can't think, so she always ends up mixing cantonese and korean when she's in tears or angry.
FAMILY; values family highly, so one day a week she and her brother spend time doing absolutely nothing at home (or whatever they may feel like doing).
UNI LIFE; rarely talks to her classmates, unless there's a group project. she's currently majoring in music composition.
music; plays the piano and guitar. her whole bedroom is basically her studio, with her instruments and her set-up. she's composed a few songs, though most were for university projects.
MP! GAMING CAFE; is kind of a regular there. can be seen most weekdays between classes drinking tea or sipping a latte. usually has her headphones in, scribbling random music notes down while tapping her foot.
#gamergirl (i'm already tracer); besides league of legends, she likes playing overwatch, maplestory, and any other random anime mmos she may discover such as elsword and blade and soul.
arachnophobia; will burst into tears if she sees a spider. typically forces zhihao to kill it.
AFFECTION; is a naturally affectionate person. when she's extremely happy (like after she wins a game), she usually hugs her friends and kisses them on the cheek.

"why did you just leave me like that?"
"you always manage to make everything about you!"
"i loved you, yoongi!"

EX-BOYFRIEND / 24 / MIN YOONGI / PART-TIMER & MUSICIAN
free-spirited, selfish, reserved, affectionate, ambitious, passionate

despite only dating him for four months, she thinks he taught her more valuable life lessons than anything else has ever taught her in her entire life. he helped her step out of her comfort zone, and guided her along the way as she grew as a person. and though they had a relatively bad breakup, she still wants more than anything to still be his friend. because through yoongi she learned how to love, and how to deal with the feeling of that love not being reciprocated. a month after she quit work, and after she had applied to mp! gaming cafe, he texted her a lengthy apology that he still wanted to be friends. so now they sometimes meet up for boba or tea, and talk about their lives together. most of the time, she just forces him to go to lecture with her so she can sleep on his shoulder and he can take notes for her instead. maybe it's their love for music that kept them together, because even now she still thinks his music is amazing, and it's what she raves about whenever he opens up to her. she's grateful he decided to stay as her friend, despite their awkward history.

"gege, i heard yejin confessed to you today and you turned her down."
"i only need you in my life, zhihui."
"...you know, this is why your friends keeps saying you have a sister complex."

OLDER BROTHER / 22 / ZHU ZHIHAO / UNIVERSITY STUDENT
overprotective, quiet, flirty, loving, responsible, standoffish

(fc: lin yanjun)

zhihao was always the person she relied on. if their parents hadn't demanded that zhihui learn how to become independent, he'd probably have no problem holding his sister's hand all throughout life. he cares deeply for her, and it shows in how he asks how her day was and the way his hand always reaches up to ruffle her hair awkwardly when she cries. he's always been the one to hug her when she cries, so he's the first person she runs to whenever she's upset. and he's always ready to throw hands at whoever hurt his baby sister. if he could, he would lock her up in her room and protect her from the world, but he know he can't. so instead he does his best to ease her worries with his quiet affection and bad jokes that always seem to make her laugh. he's teased by his friends for having a sister complex, but he just shrugs it off. his only request for her is that she stop cursing so loudly, though she can barely follow that.

"i miss you a little more than usual today."
"aw cheng! i miss you too. you're being unusually cute today hehe."
"...i'm hanging up on you now."

CHILDHOOD FRIEND / 19 / FAN CHENGCHENG / UNIVERSITY STUDENT
sarcastic, logical, playful, mature, independent, straightforward

chengcheng doesn't sugarcoat his words. through everything, he was always the voice of reason that told her whether or not she was overreacting to a situation. and even now, that hasn't changed. he's the person she texts when she realizes she might just have become her overly emotional self again, and he's the person who gives her the logical answer that makes her feel guilty for overreacting all the time. while her brother babies her and protects her, chengcheng shows her the real world with no hesitation--forcing her to grow up and learn to live on her own as he has. he's her best friend--her closest friend, even though he lives in an entirely different country now. still, she video calls him whenever she can and he continues to play league of legends with her throughout their exams and their seperate lives. despite being younger, he's much more mature than her, and almost treats her like an annoying younger sister. he even insists she call him "gege" sometimes, to which she would hit him if she could.

love story

she remembers the first time she saw xukun was sitting in her usual spot at mp! gaming cafe, and he was a few tables down from her. her habit of people watching caused her gaze to stay on him. her first thought was that he was really, really good looking, and something about him captivated her. her second thought was that he seemed to be really enjoying his shortcake. and then he took another bite, and broke out into the prettiest smile she had ever seen. zhihui had to stop herself from blushing and quickly tore her gaze away from him.

she continued her habit of going in between classes, sometimes catching him playing assassin's creed with his friends, and sometimes being too invested in her work to see he was watching her as well. he fiddled with his fork while he watched her tap her foot to the tune in her head, her pen moving quickly against her notebook as she scribbled lyrics as fast as she could. he thinks it's the concentrated look on her face that drew him in, and the way her brows would furrow and she'd chew on her lower lip when trying to get all her thoughts down on paper.

the first time the two interacted was when zhihui finally took out her earbuds and saw the familiar tall figure standing at the front door. he looked conflicted, since his usual table was occupied by a group of teenagers playing uno. so zhihui did something unthinkable for someone as terrified of the world as she was. she gathered up all her courage and cleared . he looked over at her with surprised eyes and she flashed him a sheepish smile.

"uhm...did you want to sit here?"

she motioned to the seat across from her, and his expression seemed to brighten before he nodded. she was surprised at how easy he was to talk to. in fact, he did a lot of the talking, but knew exactly when to listen to her speak. he had an aura about him that made him a natural born leader, and drew people to him. she found out he was on a travel abroad program at seoul national university from tsinghua university, and was really only here for a year. he seemed extremely relieved when she revealed she could speak chinese, and he ditched his broken korean for something more natural.

this habit of sitting with xukun and having casual conversation about their days continued until she was hired, and she became too busy facilitating games to sit down and talk with him. sometimes, he'd drag his friends over to her station and steal glances at her while they played. they had less opportunity to talk to each other, but he always waited for her after her shift to walk her home so they could catch up.

"lover boy's here to see you again."

jikyung would tease, and zhihui's face would redden at just the implication of him having feelings for her. there's no way. because xukun was like minjin to her. minjin was her boss, technically, but still an idol of hers that she feared talking to. xukun, similarly, was her friend, but was always surrounded by people who loved him and admired him. he was on another level she could reach, and even though she knew of the way he'd stare at her when he thought she wasn't looking, she'd ignore it until he confronted her about it. yes, she liked him. but she was scared, as always, of such a terrifyingly new situation she'd be thrown into.

xukun would do his best to convince her it'd be fine, because he'd be by her side the entire time.

"hello, ZHIHUI! i'm jikyung, one of the managers at mp! gaming cafe. tell me a little about yourself!"

"oh--uhm--hello!" she smiles anxiously and fiddles with the ring on her finger. "i'm zhu zhihui. i'm an international student from china studying at seoul national university, currently in my 3rd year of college. i'm majoring in music composition, so i'm passionate about anything related to that. besides that, i like playing league of legends, maplestory, and blade and soul...my brother also really likes card and board games for some reason, so i have some experience with that too."

"what made you apply for a job here? any experience?"

"well i recently--" she stops and smiles sheepishly. "i have experience in the service industry, i suppose? i worked at a flower shop up until a few weeks ago, so i know how to deal with customers and what not." she pauses again and nibbles at her lower lip anxiously. "i like it here a lot. i come here after my classes and just do my work or watch people interact. it's fun, and contributing to this warm type of environment would mean a lot to me."

"know how to play any of the games here? we do tend to teach and facilitate some games!"

"my big brother really likes board games, so i know most of those as well as many card games. most of my specialty does come with pc games though." she flashes jikyung an apologetic smile. "though i play overwatch and i could help with that. just don't let me play or..." she rubs the back of her neck. "i have a tendency to yell."

"any events you want to suggest for the cafe? WE'RE OPEN TO IDEAS!"

"oh, well," she perks up, eyes shining excitedly. "i know this cafe specializes mostly in console and board games, but pc games still have a large audience. i think it'd be fun to have an event where people bring their laptops and play games together. competitive or not, i think it could help with finding players find a compatible team. we could change the game depending on the week and such as well. kind of like a lan party, i guess?"

YOU HAVE REACHED THE END!

last words i uh didn't mean to write so much i'm so sorry. and i didn't mean for some of it to be so sad LOL idk what happened. i just wanted to show her character development i guess, but then i let it take over too much :') i also based a lot of yoongi and her's relationship off that gif i found so i got so angsty :'( forgive me ;; but let me know if i should elaborate anything! i kind of did everything in a rush so i get it if it gets confusing.
