BACKGROUND: Marelaine Li was born as the only child of a mixed race family, a rich one, living in a fancy penthouse in Shanghai. She was a beautiful and wellbehaved girl, but since she was half brazilian, people sometimes looked at her weirdly. Once they got to know that Marelaine came from a rich family though, they calmed down and treated her well. Marelaine's father is an actor, very big in China. His Brazilian wife is a doctor. It's a hectic family, but very loving and friendly. They raised their only daughter very well and she grew into a good person who wouldn't hurt a fly. Marelaine was obviously into music ever since she was a little toddler. The best way to calm her down when she was crying was to just put on some good music. Her parents thought that she would be into music for the rest of her life, and maybe even make it her career. And they were right.
Because her dad was a big actor in China, Marelaine herself played some minor roles when she was young as well, but her heart always lied with music. She was more than happy when her parents gifted her her first piano for her birthday, a beautiful cream colored piano that fit perfectly in the house. Marelaine loved to play on it all day, playing pieces she got at piano class, but also just freestyling. It was no surprise to her parents when she said she wanted to become a singer when she was 12. The problem was: she had no skills at all, and she was mixed race, so normally no company would accept her. When she was 14, after following dance and vocal class on her own, Marelaine decided that it was time to start training. It was 2013. She still wasn't exceptional, so the bigger companies rejected her, but then there was Summer star.
In Summer star, they had plans for a boy group, but because Marelaine was developing so well in training, they decided to debut her first, as solo artist. She was beautiful, special, had a huge voice range and could do all three fields decently. Summer star decided to debut her in summer 2015 with a strong, badass and empowering song, even though she was only 16 at that time. She looked more mature, and everyone always thought that was because of her Brazilian blood. The song was strong, and it received good response, partly because she was the daughter of a famous actor, of course. Marelaine was known, but it was not like she was the new it-girl of China. People seemed to be wary of her appearance, mixed race and very strong song and haughty concept. She was intimidating. Every comeback, Summer star toned her intimidatingness down, and increased the trendiness. Marelaine's first release was Queen of queens, exploring her rap and lower vocal range. In late 2015 she made her first comeback with Liu Xing, another song full of self-praise, but it was already less intimidating. In this song, Marelaine rocked the greyish blue hair with black roots, which contrasted greatly against her darker skin. It's definitely a look to bring back.
What made Marelaine explode though was her March 2016 comeback with me vs. me. A catchy bop, that's what it was. That was what Marelaine needed to gain the super star popularity. She was the monster rookie of China, conquering at fast speed. The next comeback came in fall of 2016, a double mv and one of the title tracks was a collaboration with one of the biggest stars of China. Marelaine had met him before, when she guested on a variety show he was a fixed member of, who would become like a big brother to Marelaine after collabing. while the other song was a complete turnaround from her usual concept. It was Show Luo. Their song was called handsome guy. Through just a year, Marelaine had aquired a huge following, being known for her visuals, voice and flirtiness on stage. But Marelaine didn't feel good anymore, especially after collaborating with Show Luo. She realised how lonely she actually was as solo artist, away from her parents, friends and fellow trainees. Marelaine didn't want to be solo anymore, but in a group, like her labelmates ZOOM. She released a song together with Namie Amuro before deciding to go look for a girl group to debut in, all the way in Korea, because China's idol world gives way less chances. She also didn't want to overshadow any other members in China, while the chance for that happening would be smaller in Korea.
After coming together with her parents and then having a good talk with Show Luo, Marelaine got adviced to leave Summer Star and go look for a company that would be willing to debut her together with other girls. Show Luo came up with the idea that Marelaine should go to Korea instead. He introduced her to some idols who are or have been active in Korea. First up was Zhang Yixing, a person Marelaine already knew from the variety show. Wang Jackson was next. And Jackson finally introduced Marelaine to Qin Fen. They all said the same thing. It would be hard in Korea, but since Marelaine handled being a solo artist in China perfectly, they expected her to be able to handle it in Korea as well, and that the public would dig her. Marelaine went to Korea, accompanied by Jackson because he was free at that moment. Once he was sure Marelaine arrived safely, he went back to China. She really didn't want him to do that, but Marelaine was still a girl who just became legal, young and vulnerable. Jackson stuck with her. Marelaine took her time to analyse the companies, but then rumors rose for a show. It was called Favorite. And the companies were Bighit and source music. Marelaine thought of joining them, hoping the rumors were true. Out of the two companies, she decided on Bighit. She has only been there for a few months now, but it isn't as big of a difference as other trainees since Bighit only started accepting female trainees recently. Marelaine grabbed her chance, and she got what she wanted. A place on the show.

They got to know each other at a young age when they started training at summer star and quickly grew close. They depend on each other a lot and often call or facetime now that they can't see each other as often anymore. They have actually dated before, but it was hidden from the public because yeah, she was borderline underage, and Zihao was legal. The age difference wasn't like dangerously big but still, it was there. They were dating before Marelaine left to Korea, it lasted for 7 months and had an awesome relationship, but when Marelaine decided to go to Korea, Zihao decided to break up with her. He still likes Marelaine and there is some sort of tension whenever they see each other. Marelaine can't deny that she still feels a lot for him as well. At least they're still best friends.

He might have hurted a lot, but Qin Fen is now a rising star in China and has completely bloomed. Marelaine is happy to see him happy, because she really likes Qin Fen and his old man jokes. They might grow even closer once they have the time.
