BACKGROUND.
age 0 to 12 ; home is where my heart lies
NOW PLAYING : anxiety by trey schafer
zhihui likes to think she grew up rather normally. which she did. maybe the only thing that made her stand out was that her family was much more wealthy than the rest of her peers. her father was the head of a large corporation in hong kong, and her mother was his secretary. still, she didn't live that tragic rich kid story where her parents were never home. her mother always came home to cook for her and her brother, and her father was typically found eating with them. and if they were too busy, zhihui and zhihao were guided into their father's office to share meals together. family was a big part of their lives. so when they weren't together, the zhu parents kept their children busy by sending them to various classes. while zhihao was learning to draw and play piano, zhihui was learning how to sing and dance. this lasted until middle school, when academics became the first priority for them.
she doesn't think her love for dance ever faded, even after she stopped going to traditional dance lessons. after school and after forced cram school from her parents, she would rehearse her own choreographed dances in the studio she used to take lessons in. her twin brother would sometimes join her, playing an accompaniment to her different dances. and sometimes her traditional dance teacher and her colleagues would help teach her, admiring the young girl's passion and desire to learn. her parents never found the need to scold her, since her grades never dropped. really, she only studied hard to be able to keep dancing.
age 13 to 15 ; who is it that i want to be?
NOW PLAYING : i dream by elkie
when her father suggested that zhihao and her go to dongryeok in south korea to broaden their horizons, and their knowledge of the vast world, the only thing zhihui dreaded was leaving her dance studio behind. still, she was always known as the obedient twin, so she complied despite zhihao whining about it up until the time for high school applications came. zhihao admitted that he only came to dongryeok to stay close to his sister, and zhihui admitted that she probably would've been much more reluctant to go had zhihao not came with her. the twins, who crammed in as much korean into their brain as they could in a little less than a year, struggled the moment they arrived to korea.
living by themselves was weird to them. it was unnaturally quiet without their mother's frantic typing and their father murmuring on the phone in his office. as a result, they promised each other to always come back home for dinner, unless it was absolutely impossible to do so that day. the siblings took their family values from home in hong kong back to korea, and it was the only thing keeping them grounded.
zhihao was always rather social, so he found his friend group almost right away. zhihui, who had always been on the softer side, struggled a bit more. her entire first year in high school was spent stuck by xukun's side, so when they broke up right before her second year started, she had never felt more alone.
age 16 to present ; i want to love myself
NOW PLAYING : spinning song (紡歌) by froggie (cover)
it was a tweet she saw retweeted by a mutual that really motivated her to pursue that passion she had buried deep within her and forgotten to prioritize her academics.
"auditions for the second year batch cheer dance squad will be the second week of school! xx"
it wasn't like it stood out amongst the other tweets, but maybe it's the word dance that caught her now seemingly permanently puffy eyes. maybe dance was what she needed to forget about her horrible previous relationship. through the stress and the pressure of her parents' expectations in junior high, dance had always gotten her through everything. so why not see if it still had that same effect? so she started preparing her audition in her room, zhihao helping her the entire way.
zhihui was extremely nervous. she hadn't done anything that put her heart on the line since she agreed to date xukun, and everyone saw how that turned out. failing this audition could ruin her and her confidence in her own dance--a passion she had since she was young. and even then, her somewhat traditional dance was a lot different than the videos of the cheer dance team's typical routines. still, she wanted to put her best self forward, so she knew the modernized fan dance was the best dance she was going to get.
much to her surprise, she received a email later in the week confirming her position as a dancer on the cheer dance squad. and with tears in her eyes, she wondered if maybe this would be the start of the life she had truly wished to have since coming to korea.

RELATIONSHIPS.

"gege, you don't need to baby me anymore--"
"since when did you grow up, huh? you're still a baby."
"...zhengting we're the same age."
DOUBLE TROUBLE / 18 / ZHU ZHENGTING / TWIN BROTHER
though only older by a mere twenty two minutes, zhengting considers himself as zhihui's older brother rather than her twin. he's been by her side since they were young, encouraging her to pursue her passions even if her parents didn't quite care for them. though their parents instilled the values of family deep into the twins, they were still uncaring of their children's true dreams, only wanting them to inherit the future of their father's company. still, the twins took those family values and ran with them. even as twins, they're extremely close. before high school, they spent every single second of their lives together. and even now, zhengting always goes out of his way to do things to make his sister laugh and smile. zhihui comes home as early as she can just to share a meal with her brother--and when they know they can't eat dinner that night, they eat lunch at school together. for a while, zhengting was all she had. and zhengting's protective older brother side comes out when he sees his sister angry or upset. the twins love each other, and everyone around them know that very well.

"zhi, are you crying?"
"...no..."
"who do i need to beat up?"
WCW / 18 / KIM CHUNGHA / BEST FRIEND
chungha is the type of person to defend her friends to the death--with her fists. with her pretty face, you wouldn't expect her to be the defensive friend she is. she's the only friend zhihui made in her first year of high school besides xukun (if xukun even really counts), and she stayed throughout it all. she even threatened to beat up xukun to make zhihui feel better. to zhihui, chungha's like the mom away from home she needs. the only problem is, chungha tends to enable zhihui's hesitant and naive behavior. still, the two girls are always there for each other whenever they may need it.

LOVE STORY.
beginning of my first year ; i think i fell for you
NOW PLAYING : yellow by katherine ho (cover)
it's not like chinese students in dongryeok were rare, but they certainly weren't a common sight. so imagine zhihui and xukun's surprise when they were seated next to one another on their first day of school in a country that was basically foreign to them. xukun made the effort to get to know her better. they had to, anyway, since they'd be sitting next to each other the entire year. but there was something about his lazy smiles, his casual skinship, and the way his bangs always swept over his lashes. before she knew it, she was blushing at his flirty jokes, and shyly brushing her hair behind her ear in a discreet way of flirting back.
a month later, they were dating.
winter break ; turns out i was mistaken.
NOW PLAYING : i need a doctor by nine percent
zhihui had never been in a relationship before, but she wondered if this was it. maybe she did wear her heart on her sleeve, and threw it out in the open before xukun was ready to catch it. because once winter break came, she never saw him. the two of them were still stuck in korea, and while their families came to visit for a week or two, they still promised to each other that they'd spend time together. yet, with each text she sent without a reply, she felt her heart sink lower and lower in her chest. did he not want to see her? did she do something wrong? was she too open with him, and that scared him away?
she got her answer when she saw him at the mall with one of zhihao's female friends. that same smile that he usually gave zhihui was directed towards her instead. zhihao dragged his teary-eyed sister home, fuming the entire way. still, she didn't want to overthink. maybe it was just his friend. but it didn't explain why he never responded to her texts. so she called him that same night, trying to muffle her cries.
he answered almost instantly, and she was surprised to even hear his voice. when questioned, he responded quietly that he just wanted some space. he'd text her when he was comfortable. she was too kind--too forgiving and naive to understand that at the time it was just an excuse. so she complied and let him end the call with a soft "i love you, princess" in his native tongue.
when school started back up again, he was back by her side as the loving and attentitive boyfriend he was before winter break started. she continued dating him, letting him consume her life and letting her entire world center around him. she spoiled him, always going to his apartment to cook for him when his grandmother wasn't home, and giving him attention whenever he asked. and for a while, he reciprocated.
he was there for her when she had a huge fight with her brother (which was, ironically, because of xukun), and he was there for her when she was crying over exams. he was the perfect boyfriend again who knew her better than she knew herself. though, she soon regret the decision to let him in on that much of her life.
summer vacation ; when did you stop loving me?
NOW PLAYING : we were in love by davichi & t-ara
old habits die hard. he fell back into the habit of ignoring her texts and reluctantly answering her calls. zhihao had confronted her, telling her quietly that he had seen xukun hanging out with his friends a while back, so it wasn't like he couldn't answer her messages. he just didn't want to. the thought broke her heart. her own boyfriend didn't even want to talk to her. and she couldn't even figure out why until zhihao told her his thoughts.
"he's with you for convenience. you make school life here easier, and maybe you even remind him of home. but once vacation starts, and he can go home whenever, he feels like there's no need for you."
the word home was a painfully familiar word to her. xukun whispered it into her hair all the time, saying she was his home away from home. zhihao's words plagued her mind, and she couldn't help but call her boyfriend once more.
"do you love me? or are you with me for convenience?"
he was silent. and she hated that she felt like she was in a long distant relationship when he only lived a few train rides away from her.
"zhihui--"
"would you have dated any other chinese speaking girl in our class? was i just lucky enough to get forced to sit next to you?"
he didn't reply, and she knew her answer. she broke up with him over the phone, then and there. to her, it didn't matter what he was. she loved him. she loved the way his eyes curved up into crescents when he laughed. she loved the way his fingers naturally reached out for her when he was particularly homesick. she loved how he tousled his hair when he was frustrated with a homework question.
she loved him everything about him. she loved him way too much. her mom said it was high school love--young and fleeting. she'd forget him in a few months. yet she knew better. the tears that stained her pillowcase every night told her other wise. so zhihui ended her first year of high school with a broken heart, and a will to be better.
beginning of my third year ; strangers again
NOW PLAYING : because of you by after school
the principal must have had something against her. her entire second year, she was blessed to have been able to avoid him. they were in the same class, but never really needed to interact since she was always running away from him every chance she had, whether it be to her new teammates or to zhihao. yet when she arrived to her class on her first day of her last year in high school, she almost cried out when she saw xukun's name tag at the desk next to hers.
he never made an effort to talk to her before, so she hoped that would stay the same. her heart wasn't entirely patched up, after having fallen so deep for a boy who supposedly didn't love her back. xukun, on the other hand, felt his heart stop once he saw the girl he missed holding in his arms in the seat beside him. he gathered up his courage, and murmured a soft 'hey' to his ex-girlfriend and new seatmate who he still held dear ot his heart.
she seemed surprise he even spoke to her. zhihui flashed him an awkward smile, and turned away from him. his heart fell, and though he knew it would take more than a simple greeting to let him back into her heart, he'd do whatever it takes until she trusted him again. because he loved her more than himself, and he regret letting her slip away.
