APPEARANCE & style — Tai Lie has a skinny, but toned body frame. Underneith her frail appearnace lies hard muscle. She also has slightly tanner skin than what is favored of most girls. She also bears many scars along her skin from her various adventures and tussles. Her favorite scar is the dark line that begins at the top of her left shoulder, across her collarbone, and ends right below her right collar bone. Her striking, honey-colored eyes are what really get people intimidated, but are easily changed when she shows her contagious eye-smile.

Tai Lie rarely ever wants to wear loose clothing after joining the clan. She tends to wear form-fitting clothes that are still loose enough for her to easily move around in. She is not opposed to wearing dresses, but will choose to wear something else most of the time. Tai Lie prefers to have her forearms covered and wrapped in cloth. She will always be seen wearing a jade necklace, that she received from her mother. She also has a signature look with a veil over and nose when she fights.

For being a girl (not to be ist, feminism yay, but because the timeline and especially the standards in china), Tai Lie is extremely intelligent. She is self-taught in many things, such as writing, reading, and self-defense. The thought of remaining ignorant was not very pleasing to her mind. Tai Lie is also very self-sufficient, has been ever since she was a kid. She has always preferred to work independently rather than in groups. She knows how to manage herself without depending on others. Rarely ever will she need help and, even more so, ask for help. She likes to be independent because it's more for the purpose of self protection. Tae Lie notices everything. Somehow, she has the ability to see things without people even knowing it or wouldn't think she would notice. She is very observant and pays close attention to details. The first thing she does when she does when in a new place is to look at everything. At all times, she is aware of her surroundings. Tai Lie always has good intentions, but it never seems that way to others. Most of the time, she does what she does because she knows it is for the greater good. No matter what the task may be, she will always pull through with it if she knows that it will be helpful in the end. She means well and is not as cold-hearted of a person as others make her out to be. She wouldn't back down from a fight, even if the person is twice her size. Tai Lie is also incredibly daring. If she were to be in a faction from divergent she would be in "Dauntless". She is not afraid to break standards. She doesn't give a second thought on anything that could even be potentially harmful. If she is injured, she will still walk around and play regardless of whether it will worsen her condition or not.

In addition to daring, Tai Lie has a strong sense of willpower. When she has a goal in mind, she is determined to follow through with said goal. Sometimes her willful personality can turn into stubbornness. She will follow through with anything at any costs. This can be extremely risky, especially because she is a woman who could be classified as disobedient. Tai Lie has a very stoic stature. She is known to not show much emotions or any signs of weakness. She tries her best to not show any emotions when it comes to being in negative siuations, such as listening to those around her speak lowly of her and her family, being yelled at, or being taunted. This is not to say that she doesn't have any emotions, but she is not very open with her feelings. Tai Lie is one of the most honest people ever. She is very straightforward when she speaks and will not be hesitant with her voice. She doesn't beat around the bush and will always get straight to the point. No matter what the outcome may be, honesty is her best policy. She will be honest regardless of whether or not it will hurt someone's feelings. Tai Lie is extremely self-confident when it comes to her skill set and abilities. She knows that she is very talented and is a quick learner when it comes to practically anything. One might say that she is overly confident about her abilities. She shows excessive pride in her capabilities and definitely will brag about how talented she is if someone were to ask. Tai Lie, being the athletic junkie she is, is extremely competitive when it comes to just about anything. She often likes to make a competition out of anything whether it be getting from one place to another or seeing who could stay up the latest. She is also quite the sore loser and is easily angered this way. You'll often hear her say "I won" even though no one was competing with her. Surprising to most, she is also one to think positively most of the time. Regardless of how literal and straighforward she is, she will always look to the bright side of things. Sometimes this can be troublesome because of the many times her expectations are let down or it can affect how carelessly she acts.

Tai Lie is an extremely rebellious character, has been ever since she was a kid. She will defy anyone if she so pleases, no matter what the consequences are. She's not one to follow "authority" and their rules. Being extremely stubborn, she will not follow orders (that she doesn't like) just because a person has a higher social class status. Tai Lie is also not very "ladylike". At times, she can seem a bit uncivilized or unsophisticated. Sometimes she will completely forget about the existence of manners and being ladylike. She hates being in "boring places" with "boring, rich people that laugh like they have snot up their nose". Tai Lie is troublingly asocial. She tries to avoid all human interactions and contact as much as possible and keep it to a low minimum per day. She prefers to rid herself of attention, if possible. She knows that people talk about her and she would prefer to just not acknowledge their existence. She'd much rather blend in with the shadows where she believes she performs at her best. At times, she will have what she likes to call "off days" where she will do her best to avoid all interactions with human beings whatsoever. When she has her "off days", She is more in her head than in reality and prefers to have her alone time. Despite being the solitary person she is, Tai Lie will not be afraid to start an argument despite the area she is in. She is quick to start arguments and is quite the hot-head. She acts too much on her pride and will be eager to have a fist-fight if someone wants it. Tai Lie does not give her trust easily. She does not rely on others much and will always be hesitant on who to interact with. No matter what type of situation she is in, it could be a life or death situation, she will never trust a stranger on the spot. If her trust is ever broken, it's practically impossible to get it back

The past is the past.

background — Tai Lie's family has always lived in poverty. Even her parents' parents lived in poverty. Never once leaving their village, the Tao family was well established and very well-known. Her father's side of the family have been known to be exceptionally good in the pottery business for generations. They have also been known for having at least one male descendant from each generation enlist in the army. Her mother's side of the family weren't as well known. They mainly came from the slums of the village, making money any way that they could. Her mother met her father when he was sent by his parents to buy a quilt made by her family. It was love at first sight and the two became infatuated with each other. Thankfully, both families were on good terms and were accepting of their bond. 

Tai Lie's father was ecstatic to know he would be a father and was really hoping for a son. Like really hoping. He was extremely devastated when Tai Lie was born because the baby turned out to be a girl. Her father was only caring towards the baby because it was their first and only child at the time. He was not opposed to having a girl, but certainly did not favor having one. Immediately after her mother was feeling better, they tried again in hopes of having a boy. Their second child did end up being a boy and her parents, more specifcally her father, were glad. Once Tai Lie's brother was born, all of her father's love and attention went towards the youngest of the family. She became just another girl in her father's life; thus, she was extremely close with her mother. 

With hopes of getting her father's attention, Tai Lie would go out into the woods and bring back dead rodents or freshly chopped pieces of wood. This would only anger her father more because of how "unlady like" she was behaving. Until she was 11 years old, Tai Lie would continue this behavior of skipping daily chores with her mother and going out into the forest to go climb the trees, watch the village's elder men hunt for food, observe the elder men when they were training, or have "sword fights" (tree branch fights) with her brother. After another day of her father yelling at her for misbehaving, Tai Lie argued back with her father saying "If Tian Yun can do it, why can't I? I'm older than he is! I'm like him! He likes the forest and so do I! He likes to play and so do I! He likes girls and so do I!" This caught everyone listening off guard. Her father then scolded her for saying such nonsense and dragged her inside to avoid the watchful eyes of the villagers.



Tai Lie never brought up that topic ever again. When she was 13, Tai Lie grew very close with a girl from her village. The two had both confessed that they felt something for each other that was more than friendship. They would sneak into the woods on most nights with each other. One night the girl's father had found them in the forest about to sneak a kiss. Afraid of what her father would say, the girl had slapped Tai Lie's face with a yelp. While still in shock, Tai Lie was shoved before her father with many enraged villagers behind her yelling about how the only girl of the Tao family was caught forcing herself on another girl. Tai Lie's father was fuming as he yelled at her in front of everyone. Not once did she deny the false accusations because she did not want the other girl to be treated as she was. Tai Lie was striked on her face again by her father, her mother crying behind him, and was then shunned and banished from ever returning to the village. 

Tai Lie took to the forest and the mountains. After a few months, she was taken in by an older man, Dai Ho, who was the head of the village she stumbled upon. She became very close with Dai Ho and treated each other as if they were blood family. There she was able to train under him and grew as a fighter and a martial artist. She learnt how to control her emotions and energy; how to observe her surroundings and notice certain tactics during a fight. She knew she was naturally gifted and would like to be a show off at times. Another boy that was being trained by Dai Ho, Wei Sheng, felt that Tai Lie was a threat. Wei Sheng believed that no girl had a right to be training with such powerful men (and men in general). His domineering personality got out of hand multiple times, frequently feeling as if he had authority to put Tai Lie and others in "their place". His greed, arrognce, and anger are the main reasons why he is unable and unfit to win in a spar. Often losing to her, he knew he had to find another way to rid of her and gain her title of being the most gifted. With the village not being drastically far from her hometown, it wasn't very hard for the boy to find out why Tai Lie had been shunned. When she was 17, the boy made an announcement in front of the entire village about Tai Lie's past. Dai Ho was quick to silence the village and bring Tai Lie out of the public eye. He was not angered by the news, but rather with the Wei Sheng's behavior. Being that the Wei Sheng's family were long term members of their village, he was not able to remove him entirely and settled for refusing to be his teacher anymore. 

A few months after the incident, Dai Ho had to let go of Tai Lie since the villagers were beginning to grow restless and furious. She was then back out on the streets, but now with the bang given to her by Dai Ho on her back. She swore to never speak about her interest in the same gender and would do whatever it took to prevent that information from ever hindering her life in anyway again. After another few months, she was stopped in the forest by an on-duty guard of the Jingyue Valley. She was brought before the emporer and questioned on her background and motives for being within their boundaries. She placed her bang on the floor before them and explained that she was just lone fighter. After noticing the bang with special engravings on it, Elder Tan quickly recognized them as being the marks from the village of Dai Ho. Elder Tan knew this because he briefly passed by the village before and could not simply forget the man whom weld a bang like no other. 

A day or two after Tai Lie had been taken in by Elder Tan, she met his other disciples. Feeling a bit out of places she decided to stand out of the way and just play with some dirt or something while pretending not to listen but actually is. She was just sitting there "minding her own business" when the dirt she was playing with ended up on her face and in . "Who's the pipsqueak?" someone laughed from above her. She is swift and strong when she quickly spun on her feet, knocking down said person onto the floor, and scrambled on top of him. "Not a pipsqueak, you rat." She growled before throwing a punch to his stomach. And thus, with pure adoration in his eyes, the boy introduced himself as Long Wei and, thus, a new best friendship began.

     - They treated each other as if they were related by blood. He loves to joke with her and make fun of her, but made sure that he was the only one to do so. If anyone were to harm Tai Lie in an uncalled for manner, havoc would rain down upon them. She would always make fun of him and his old age, joking about how much more agile and swift she was (which was a fail because he'd quickly knock her down on her back with a fast hit with his staff). Tai Lie will forever be grateful to him and his deeds. She hopes that one day, they will be able to reunite.

     - Tai Lie has a very special spot in her heart for Elder Tan. Over the years, she has grown to see him as a father figure as well. Tai Lie finds no problem in talking to Elder Tan and will show no hesitation to greet him. Although he does not show it often, deep (and I mean ddeeeeppp) down Elder Tan will agree with him having a soft spot for Tai Lie. He knows what she is capable of and is always pushing her to her limits. The decisions he makes involving Tai Lie are always in the best interest of her. There are many, many times where Tai Lie slips up and speaks with Elder Tan informally, but over the times he usually just gives her a hard thwack on the back of her head. 

▪   Zhou Long Wei | 21 | Bestest Friend | Airhead, Determined, Protective
     - Long Wei is the closest thing to a best friend that Tai Lie has. He doesn't treat her any differently just because she is a girl and will rough house with her if she so pleases. Their personalities clash with each other many times, but also blend together as well. He is often that solid rock for her to lean on whenever she needs and vice versa. They have literally sworn to protect each other with their lives. That's how close they are. He is one of the only people that Tai Lie has ever considered revealing her uality to and for Tai Lie that is huge. They like to mess around with each other often and play tricks on the other. They are basically ride or die homies.

▪   Li Yulian | 19 | Distant Comrad | Judgemental, Fierce, Dedicated
     - Tai Lie isn't very close with Yulian even though their personalities are somewhat similar. Because their personalities are so similar, they tend to not be with each other that often. Tai Lie is always a bit more cautious around Yulian. She knows that Yulian is a trustworthy person, but she still remains stoic and attentive. Tai Lie wishes to become closer with Yulian as they are both some of the fewer women, but has yet to find the initiative to do so.

▪   Feng Wushuang | 23 | Go-To-Acquaintance | Friendly, Respectful, Perfectionist
     - Tai Lie is much closer to Yulian's counterpart than she is with her. Wushuang's friendly nature made it easy for Tai Lie to see him as a good acquaintance to have. She won't hesitate to start up a conversation with him, but also won't really go out of her way to talk to him. They're not the closest of friends, but can certainly execute tasks well together.
