Kim SOLMI

BIRTHNAME : Kim, Solmi
NICKNAMES :

▸ Fetus — she's probably one of - if not the youngest in the club, and the fact that she looks younger than she is doesn't help fend off this irritating nickname that has been attached to her practically from day one.

DATE OF BIRTH : July 27, 1999
BIRTHPLACE : Illsun, South Korea
ETHNICITY : Korean
LANGUAGES SPOKEN :

▸ Korean — native.

FACE CLAIM : Gahyeon of Dreamcatcher
BACK-UP FACE CLAIM : Yeri of Red Velvet
HEIGHT & WEIGHT : 164cm & 50kg
APPEARANCE :

▸Solmi still hasn't shed the baby fat in her cheeks completely... just like the traces of childhood on the rest of her body. She's not sure if they'll ever go away, if she's being honest.  Since she looks quite young, she always tries to go for the mature look - blouses and slacks instead of t-shirts and jeans, bold lipstick, high heels, and everything else she has seen on an unnie and deems appropriately mature.

hey there demons

THE DOER
ESTP
GRYFFINDOR

intuitive, inquisitive, courageous, hardworking, decisive
headstrong, rash, blunt,  dependant, self-righteous  -

DOWN THE HALL

You see a girl walk down the hall of Seoyang University, a baby-faced thing with the most serious of expressions, heels clacking on the floor as she walks around, handing black-and-orange pamphlets that read "EXPOSE THE OTHER SIDE OF THE NATURAL - JOIN MYSTERY CATCHER CLUB TODAY!". Everyone that shows even the slightest interest is immediately engaged in a conversation age differences be damned, and it's hard to stay neutral at the face of the sheer passion that's coming out of ... even if what she says is total crap. Ghosts? Demons? Please.

THE GHOSTS OF KIM SOLMI

But Solmi believes, oh how she believes. Ever since she got her evidence of the existence of the supernatural, Solmi's entire view on life has been changed, and no one - not even the most rational of people - will be able to change her mind on the matter. Or any matter, really. She is headstrong in her ideas, sometimes to the point of it being offputting (think of arguments with that one person who will never accept defeat because all of your points aren't good enough. That's our girl). There is no changing her mind, no argument is good enough to convince her that she's wrong in something that she really believes in. Her self-righteous nature doesn't help at all, as Solmi genuinely believes that she is right, and by association, you are wrong.

She will be blunt about it, too, telling you exactly what she thinks and why she thinks that. There's only one way to make people see the truth, right? Showing it to them. She doesn't see a point in lying or manipulating or even being scared of what people will say. Solmi has a mission, to uncover the truth and make as many people as she can see it, and there's no room for shyness or embarrassment along the way. It helps that she is very courageous, both in face of ghosts and university students. Is it bravery or stupidity? You decide. It might be a little bit of both, especially considering Solmi (contrary to popular belief) does get scared. A lot, actually. Bring her to one of the haunted places and she will be afraid of the dark halls and dark energy and give her a tough econ exam and she will tremble like a leaf. But to her, there is no point in succumbing to that feeling. Her courage comes especially when she is afraid, acting when she's the most scared and facing her fears - that's the only way to get to the truth, after all. Yes, sometimes she is being stupid, rushing into a situation wholly unprepared, but rash decisions cannot be helped on her part. Solmi is not a planner, she's a doer. She lacks the patience and the intellectual capacity to sit down and think of a plan.

She's all intuition, all "feeling the vibe" and "sensing the situation" around her. Science has never been her strongest suit, and neither has rationality. Solmi is very strong on feelings and beliefs, and she follows her intuition and gut feeling all the time. She doesn't care that someone says that one thing is logical when there is a tight knot in her stomach that tells her otherwise. At least it makes decision-making easy. She feels like it's the right thing to do? Okay, let's go at it, head first. She is very decisive, almost never faltering in her decisions (even if it isn't always good and there are repercussions afterward), and sticking by them to the very end.

Solmi seeks out the truth. Be it the supernatural or anything else in her life, she wants to know and she is not afraid to demand her rightfully-owed answers. She digs and digs until she gets to the bottom of things, and if she can't do it the smart way, she'll do it the blunt way, through sheer dedication and hard work. She's the one who sits through all-nighters and prints out pamphlets for the club, the one who writes all about it in her blog because the people need to know, all on top of trying her very best in her classes and keeping up with her friends and family, because she believes that this is the right way to do things. Sometimes, though, her beliefs fail her, turn her against herself. Solmi is extremely dependant on what she thinks is right, and she can't stray even a bit from it. She is the one that looks in the mirror and thinks that she looks too young, and she is the one who puts on "mature" outfits and bold lipsticks and walks around in heels even though her feet are killing her. She is the one that can't accept defeat because there can only be one truth. She is the one that will work herself into an early grave just because she needs to know.

BACKGROUND

Kim Solmi was born in Illsun, South Korea, to parents Sohee and Daeyong, and sister Seola, all raising little Solmi in the best way they possibly could.  Thus her life prior to that day had been nothing out of the ordinary, full of fun days and boring school and cool friends. Said cool friends had been fearless and courageous just like her, and so a regular activity of theirs included trespassing and exploring abandoned buildings and scary places around the city. It was always fun, scary, but nothing to take too seriously. Up until the fateful day during senior year in high school, when Solmi saw her very first ghost.

Well, saw might be a bit of a stretch. The group of friends ventured into a long-abandoned house with gruesome urban myths to color its decaying walls. A man brutally killed his wife and children, before killing himself only to return as a ghost to haunt the place of murder. The group had never explored the place, scary as it was, but they were seniors now. The sky was the limit and they were not afraid of anything. Only the moment Solmi set foot in that house, she could immediately feel that something's wrong. A knot in her stomach that screamed wrong wrong wrong and wanted to turn around and leave.  One of the friends wanted to document their adventure on his camera, but the newly bought device refused to work. Then there were creaks, noises that shouldn't be there, light brushes of wind in the closed space. And then there was the painting. Alone on the wall, standing despite the trials of time and framed in a thick wooden frame, hidden behind an armor of glass. The painting itself did not bode to anything out of the natural - portraying a field of roses in decaying oil colors - but the moment Solmi stepped towards it, the glass cracked with a deafening squeak, leaving an ugly gash in the middle. The man didn't want her close to it, and Solmi didn't advance any further. Instead, she turned around, left, and never doubted the existence of ghosts ever again.

A year later, fresh out of college and into university, nothing had wavered Solmi's mind. And imagine her surprise when she finds a club at her university that caters exactly to her needs. So what if not all of the members take it as seriously as her, and what if some of them even don't believe in ghosts or the supernatural in general. Solmi doesn't care. It only means more people that she can make see the truth. And she will make them.

(I don't know what you have in mind for the story, if it's going to be supernatural or more like Buzzfeed unsolved, which is why Solmi's encounter can go either way - it could be she really saw something supernatural, or it could just be a creepy old place)

TRIVIA:

▸ Solmi has a personal blog where she shares her personal opinions on various things and writes about the Mystery Catcher Club among that.

▸ As she majors in graphic design, Solmi has taken it on herself to become the unofficial PR team of the club, designing various pamphlets and banners, and generally just making things look pretty.

▸Her dorm room is positively filthy, as between studying, working nonstop for the Mystery Catcher Club, writing her blog, and trying to maintain a semblance of a social life, Solmi simply doesn't have time to clean anything, nor does she have enough power to care.

▸She always wears at least a little bit of makeup when she's outside, a desperate attempt to mature her face even a little bit.

▸Contrary to what you may think, Solmi actually doesn't like horror movies at all. They're scary, and without the ability to do something, the scary part doesn't go away. So it's just scary, and awful, and there's way too many jumpscares and not enough truth behind it to keep her engaged.

this is my family

RELATIONSHIPS :

FATHER — Kim Daeyong (50) / Professor of Business at Seoyang University / jokester, easy-going, creative / 10

With a father that has spent every single moment of his waking life adoring his baby, it's needless to say that Solmi grew up to be daddy's little girl. She absolutely adores her fun and awesome father, and before she started attending Seoyang, wouldn't shy away from expressing it. But now that she's an adult and a student, and her dad is a professor, Solmi tries to act professionally when she's with her dad and they're seen in public together. Of course, it doesn't stop Daeyong from being the embarrassing dad that he is, still babying and cracking jokes left and right. The other students don't really care, they don't really expect anything else - Professor Kim is like that with everyone, of course he'll be like that with his daughter too.

MOTHER — Kim Sohee (49) / stewardess / workaholic, kind, hard-working  / 8

While her mother loves Solmi just as much as her father, her work ensured that she wasn't present around the household like Daeyong. As a result, Solmi's connection to Sohee is less than Daeyong, but she still loves her mother very much. She would always bring presents from all around the world, and as a kid it made Solmi feel like she was special. Even now it does. She keeps the collection of gifts on her shelf at the dormitory and loves telling all about it to anyone that would ask.

OLDER SISTER — Kim Seola (25) / student at Yale University / smart, creative, go-getter  / 9.5

Seola has always received the full adoration of her little sister, and with good reason - she is beautiful, smart, successful, basically everything that a little sister looks up to. Solmi has always been a little bit jealous of Seola, because everything seemed to come naturally to her - naturally smart, she got into Seoyang University with a scholarship (following their father and majoring in business), and later even enrolling into Yale to continue her education and get her masters. But Seola has been the best sister Solmi could ever ask her, badass and funny and always there for her. Even if she's a bit jealous, it doesn't really matter. Seola is the best sister in the entire world.

before you join mcc...

First of all, do you believe in supernatural beings?

"Yes! of course I do! There are a lot of things in our world that we still can't explain, and a lot of things that we don't know. So yes, the chance of there being something that doesn't fall under the rules of science is pretty big."

have you experienced an extraordinary event in YOUR life?

"i was a senior in high school... solastyear. Me and a bunch of friends were exploring a house that was rumored to be haunted - a man brutally murdered his wife and then killed himself, and his ghost haunts the abandoned property. and... you could just feel it. the energy. it wasn't normal, i had chills. and then there was this painting. i knew that whatever was in that house didn't want to me come near it, but i did it anyway. and then the glass cracked. cracked!"

DO YOU BELIEVE THERE are SCIENTIFIC REASONS BEHIND unfortunate events?

"Could be, I'm not against that option. supernatural is just something that we can't explain, but maybe we will be able to once we advance more. but at the same time, it could be that we will never be able to explain the supernatural with natural laws like physics. I mean, it's supernatural for a reason, right?"

HAVE YOU EVER HEArD ANYONE saying that you're weird or creepy?

"what!? did somebody say that about me? i am not creepy, I am a perfectly normal young woman! I bet whoever said that is the creepy one."

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS?

"didn't you hear what i just said about it? of course i do. i've seen one. they're real."

DO YOU BELIEVE IN ALIENS?

"that's not even a supernatural question. it is statistically improbable that there are no aliens out there. aliens are a part of science. we can't be the only ones in the entire universe, can we?"

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WEREWOLVES AND VAMPIRES?

"it would be really cool if they are real! there have been plenty of recordings of vampires and werewolves throughout history, so there has to be some truth to it! the fact that we haven't proven that they're real doesn't mean they aren't."

CAN YOU SPEND A NIGHT ALONE AT A HAUNTED PLACE?

"oh gosh, how haunted are we talking about here exactly? like on a creepy scale of 1-10? and do i have to be alone? i would pee my pants - wait, are you actually serious about this? then yes. one hundred percent yes. let's do this. I can't miss out on an opportunity like this!"

LASTly, what is your favorite mystery/thriller movies (if any)?

"I'm not a huge horror fan, but the sixth sense is a classic. even i watched it. uhm, mystery... gone girl is great."
