appearance

Lucy was blessed with the mixed genetics of her two ethnicities, and even if (to her) she doesn't look Korean enough, many people have noted before that she is quite pleasant on the eye. She doesn't quite look caucasian with her slightly slanted eyes and the asian influence written all over her face, but she in no way looks korean, or all that asian for that matter. Her nose is entirely her father's work, and the credit for her lips and curves (and the lack of thin-stick genetics) all go to the European side of the family. She stands at 162 centimeters (of course she would get that part from her mother and not her 1.9 meters-tall dad), and weighs around 50 kilograms. Even if outside of Korea she wouldn't have been considered a stunning bombshell, Korea seems to really like her doll-like looks.

TRAITS:
Friendly, carefree, patriotic, easily excited, lively, oblivious, frivolous, self-deceiving, ignorant

FIRST IMPRESSION

You see a girl with a -eating grin on her face (perhaps too -eating), with eyes wide in wonder and excitement. To the outside eye, that is the perfect description of who Lucy is. She lives a happy life, not a care in the world, and even though you can't really understand her (and she can't really understand you) she seems undeterred by the fact - with the exception of a huge widening of eyes and a dozen broken "eeotae?" being muttered towards any direction that would listen. She seems undeterred by most things, really, be it the language barrier or the lack of experience or the fact that most of the contestants on the show are fighting for their future in the industry. Lucy just seems to be genuinely having the time of her life... unless, of course, she gets too tired or too hungry or too hurt by the comments of the judges. Even then, she stays as cheerful as possible, because at the end of the day she is having the time of her life, living the dream of becoming a kpop idol. What else do you really need in life?

INTO THE RABBIT HOLE

On the inside Lucy is quite cheerful too. She is generally a very happy girl, always looking on the bright side of things, always cheerful and always trying to have the best time she can. She is very friendly and enjoys meeting new people, and not even a language barrier will stop her. Sure, she doesn't understand 98% of what is being said in Korean around her aside from those words from the lyrics she has memorized after a thousand clicks on the youtube replay button, but she tries her very best to fit in and be as respectful as possible, the perfect foreigner that respects the culture and embraces it. The countless hours spent on the internet learning about the ins and outs of the Korean culture certainly help her, and so does the fact that she is having the time of her life. Lucy absolutely adores Korea, even if that Korea is the idea that has been stuck in her head since she was twelve and first discovered kpop. She loves the music, she loves the fashion, she loves the food. She loves that fact that she is half Korean and can boast about it to anyone who would listen. She loves that kpop is taking over the world and has a sense of patriotism when it comes to anything Korea. BTS win an award at the BBMA? That's her country being represented! Korea kicking Germany's during the World Cup? That's her country dominating. She feels more connected to her Korean part than her own country, perhaps because her mother tried to do the exact opposite and alienate her family as much as possible.

Now that she is in Korea, she makes it her personal goal to tell each and every person she meets how much she loves Korea and how proud and excited she is to finally be here. Everything new that she encounters excites her - all the things that she has read about and seen in videos are finally in front of her, and she is absolutely ecstatic about it. It doesn't take a lot to make her excited or happy - never did - and even the smallest of things like hearing someone say hwiparam would send her into a gleeful rampage about how she recognizes the word thanks to Blackpink.

Lucy is a carefree person, quite impulsive and never thinking about the consequences of what she does. She is a glass half full kind of person, always looking at the bright side of the situation. She follows her heart and her dreams boldly, even if it goes against what others tell her. She is not easily deterred from what she wants, especially if that thing has been festering in her brain for a while. She came to Korea against her family's wish because she wanted to live there and wanted to become a kpop star, and it didn't matter that her mother greatly disapproved of the idea. This is her life that she is living, and she is allowed to make her own decisions even if the people who are close to her oppose them. She knows that she is very brave for following her heart and becoming a trainee in a foreign country with little to no backup plan, but that is what she has always wanted to do. Lucy focuses on that part. She doesn't focus on the other side of the coin. She continues to be as cheerful as ever when someone asks her about what will happen if she doesn't make it. She simply smiles and says that she is living her dream of being a kpop idol and that this alone is worth it. She's not going to focus on the hardships, the highs are more than worth it.

The overly positive attitude comes from the absolute refusal to see the bad side of the situation or acknowledge her own mistakes. Any situation has a silver lining in her opinion, and while it is true, ignoring the flaws rarely does any good. Most of the time, it only makes the situation worse, but Lucy doesn't think about that. To her, admitting that the something is not as good as she has hoped means admitting that maybe she shouldn't have been so impulsive and so carefree (and maybe she should've listened to her parents when they advised her against coming to Korea) and the last thing Lucy wants is to start questioning the one thing that she has wanted for years.

THE CONFLICT

The more she sees Korea, the less she can ignore the obvious things knocking on her door. With all of her acceptance and adoration of the Korean culture, Lucy's mindset is western through and through, and some of the more traditional and old-fashioned customs and beliefs Koreans practice simply baffle her (the obvious double standards and ism, for example, as well as the ridiculous idol dating culture). The more she pronounces her love for Korea, the more she notices the xenophobic and racist remarks that can't escape even her. The more she trains towards her debut, the more she sees the monstrous things the kpop industry does, the unachievable beauty standards, the inhumane working hours, everything that is not so shiny and glamorous as the kpop mvs she loves so much show. The more she experiences it, the less she can ignore, and the more she questions herself and her decisions, her recklessness and ignorance. There will come a time when she realizes that she's in way over her head, with no way to back out, with nowhere to go back and nowhere to go to. But for now she remains blissfully ignorant, living the dream of a kpop star in the making.

history

Lucy King was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and even though her mother was a Korean immigrant, Korean culture was barely present in her house. Her mother, Yebin, did her best to alienate both herself and her family from her homeland, being previously burnt from it and all but fleeing from it to whichever country would take her. Yebin's life in Korea was harsh, full of depression and struggling to meet month's end due to the harsh competition in the market and her lack of ability to get a good job or a good husband. She met Lucy's father, George, when he was on vacation in Korea, and strategically chose to fall in love with him. Geroge took Yebin with him back to New Zealand, and Yebin hadn't looked back ever since. Lucy, on the other hand, kept on peeking.

It all started when Lucy was being bullied in middle school for being half-asian. It was the usual "someone else is different so let's signal them out for it" sort of bullying, and because there weren't many other asians around, Lucy felt like a true outcast. Then, she discovered kpop. All the pretty Korean people who were so pretty and so good at singing and dancing. Lucy was in love.

In school, she was being mocked for not being weird. At home, her mother promptly kept ignoring it. In her room, Lucy looked at how cool kpop is, and knew the truth. While the bullying passed come high school, but Lucy's impression was set in stone. She felt like the only place where she truly belonged, where she could be cool and amazing, was in Korea. More specifically, in kpop. She fell in love with kpop, and with it with Korea. As a true fan, Lucy swallowed content like water, following group after group, exploring more and more of the Korean culture - of her culture. Her mother had of course noticed and expressed her displeasure, but Lucy had none of it. The impressions and feelings about her previously unexplored ancestors were too strong and no one was going to change them, not even her own mother.

She was 16 when she first asked her parents for permission to audition for a kpop company, and was met with a very loud no. Lucy was not deterred. She knew that soon she wouldn't need her parents' permission, all she had to do was wait a few more years. A month after graduating from high school, she announced that she was moving to Korea to live with her grandparents and pursuing a career in entertainment. Her mother, despite hating every moment of it, could do nothing legally about it, and so was forced to watch her daughter get on a plane. Lucy believed that her mother will forgive her once she sees that her daughter is living her dream.

In Korea, Lucy immediately began auditioning for entertainment companies. She knew that she stood no chance when it came to singing and dancing, but she hoped that her looks and determination would be enough to get her into one of the big 3 (and closer to fangirling over her favorite groups). She was wrong. SM, JYP, and YG all rejected her almost immediately. It was after a failed audition at JYP that she was approached by a woman who, through very broken English, explained that she was a scout for an entertainment company and that she wanted Lucy to audition for them. Urban Works was not a company that Lucy was familiar with, but at that point she figured she doesn't really stand a chance of getting into any big company. But if BTS and Gfriend managed to become successful in unknown companies, so could Lucy. The audition went smoothly (Urban Works only saw her looks and were very, very desperate), and thus Lucy's training has begun.

Five months later, they decided to send her to Produce 99, hoping for a combined Sohye+Cube Chicks effect. Urban Works hopes that Lucy would be able to catch the eye of the netizens with her beauty and cheerful personality, as well as that beautiful redemption arc. Lucy is simply happy to meet people who may have caught a glimpse of Sistar, AOA, or EXO.

trivia
  • As her mother almost never spoke Korean in the house, all of Lucy's knowledge of the language comes
from all of the kpop and korean variety that she watches. She barely knows any structure or grammar,
and her pronunciation leaves a lot to be desired, but at least she knows how to announce that she's
    a wolf (awoooo)

  • She may not know how to say who she thinks should be the center, but she sure can sing all of Sistar's
discography (aka as a true kpop fan who has had way too much time on her hands, she knows a lot of
kpop songs, and dances, and idol facts, and variety shows, and just kpop in general. She's a true fan)

  • She fangirls very, very hard, over almost anything

  • Her mother still tries to convince her to come back to New Zealand, though she does so begrudgingly.

  • While she absolutely adores Korean food, she can't handle spice very well. She will still try. Very hard.

  • Even after five months, Korean skincare and makeup still amaze her.

  • Lucy was an avid produce101 and produce101 season 2 fan. Her favorite contestants were Somi and
    Samuel.

  • Without language on her side, Lucy is forced to communicate by repeatedly saying the same word
over and over again and wildly miming her thoughts. It results in quite the hilarious conversations.
  • Her laughter is very loud and very high-pitched. Sometimes when she hears herself laugh Lucy starts
    laughing even harder.

  • Lucy will fangirl at any given opportunity, even over people who are just trainees. If you're the SM
trainee, prepare yourself. The other big companies? You're next.

trainee life
The five months Lucy has been a trainee were spent grinding through the basics. Basics, basics, and then even more basics. All Lucy had were her looks and a semi-pleasant voice that didn't always go out of tune, but she had never sung professionally and had never danced before. Even more of a problem was the fact that she knew very, very little Korean (her ability to sing all of BTS' discography didn't count, apparently)Urban Works put her through vigorous training from morning to night every day. These five months have been nothing short of nightmarish, but Lucy has blissfully ignored the hardships, focusing on the fact that she was actually on her way to debut and become a kpop idol!!

Skillwise, she is still working on the basics, but she is improving quickly thanks to the ruthless training system. Her Korean leaves a lot to be desired - she still can't converse properly and can barely understand what is being said around her - but she has learned hangul and can sort of read now, given enough time to process the letters. At least her Gee became a lot better.

comments:  I'm not  sure if Nancy (or Shuhua) are too strong of twins, I wanted to go with someone who is not very skilled and has an accent. I envision Lucy going to d or F (unless some miracle happens), so if you have a suggestion for a better twin I would absolutely love to hear it.
