YEO INHYEOK
EXPLOSIVE PROTECTIVE TENDERHEARTED
KEYWORD : FIREWORK
YEO INHYEOK - he's aggressive, scathing, too hot to handle. it seems like every word is a match dropped into his aura of gasoline. inhyeok lashes out, flaunting his Alpha Male status as "the gas station king". his teeth are bared, blood glistening across them (is it your blood or his?). he looks in the mirror, puffs out his chest. "you wanna die?" he asks no one in particular. his chin just upwards and he swallows down his words. even after years of practice, the proportions are off.
YEOHYEO - he's bumbling, a bull in a china shop. his words fall on top of each other and they trip over his lips. talking to him is like running a marathon. his shoulders hunch inwards--an effect of being stuck in his cage for so long. "ah, no...you'd be better." he always says, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck (first place? what's that? first place in...). throws himself into the way of nonexistent bullets. "if hyunsoo dies, i die." he always says. something in his gaze says that he isn't bluffing. he looks at himself in the mirror, forehead pressed against the glass. "you wanna die?" he asks himself, eyes scrutinizing everything wrong or off about him. he can't get the ing gasoline off of his hands. get off !
background
inhyeok grew up as the only child to two hardworking parents. his father owned the town's gas station and knew practically everyone in the town. his mother toiled away in the convenience store, pitching the best cigarettes or chips to anyone who would listen. inhyeok grew up in the gas station, working there as early as he could. not that he particularly minded--the tv at home only got a few channels (and was always staticky and out of focus), the radio didn't work, and there were few other things to entertain him at the house. he spent his time waving to whoever came in, restocking shelves, and making change. that's how he met hyunsoo.
growing up, inhyeok began to feel like the gas station was less of a second home and more of a prison. it started with his father preaching a gospel of Machismo, of aspiring to be the Ultimate Man. he could never keep up with his father's ideal type, and was facing the uglier face of his father the more he spent time in his presence. by the end of middle school, he was getting into more fights with his father, fewer tourists were stopping by the station, and overall the family situation was below satisfactory. inhyeok wanted to escape, no, he needed to escape. around this time, inhyeok began to experience new feelings that he had otherwise brushed off as a child. namely being, the question of his uality. what were originally fleeting thoughts in the back of his mind morphed into hazy daydreams while he was at the gas pump or scenarios that played in his mind whenever he tried to go to sleep. these thoughts were unavoidable when he hit high school. he thought of men differently, of hyunsoo differently.
inhyeok buried the feelings in fear of hyunsoo's rejection, of his father's wrath. this was most definitely not the path of the Ultimate Man and he had felt hyunsoo becoming harder to hold onto as they grew older. inhyeok resigned himself to accepting his fate. escape? there was none. to maintain order and keep the peace, he would live out the plan of his parents and rot away at the gas station.

SMARTS not very book smart and he doesn't deny it. he acknowledges that he's more street smart and blames it on his father's upbringing.

PARENTS inhyeok leaves without any word to his parents. he sneaks out with hyunsoo and doesn't look back. when word gets out that he's left, his mother is worried and his father is furious. they are forced to hire a new help for the gas station. his father stews in his rage, his mother gossips to the other ladies about what saeho has done to their children.
"IT'S NOT THAT I WON'T, IT'S THAT I CAN'T."
relationships
seo hyunsoo (18) ; oh, you mean the world to me.
hyunsoo and inhyeok met when hyunsoo would make a pit stop at the gas station for some gum before heading home to his grandmother. inhyeok would always be working the counter and would ring him up. whenever hyunsoo would stop by, the two of them would talk about anything on their minds and they hit it off right away. hyunsoo began to frequent the gas station so much that inhyeok was pulling out the gum as soon as he saw hyunsoo approaching from down the road.
growing up, both boys had special places in their hearts for each other and relied on each a lot to be their support system. they were always seen at school together, playing outside whenever they could. hyunsoo would hang around the gas station whenever inhyeok had to work and the work day suddenly didn't feel that bad anymore. they've had their up's and down's, but for the most part, their relationship has been pretty smooth sailing.
at present, hyunsoo doesn't know inhyeok's feelings and inhyeok doesn't know hyunsoo's uality so inhyeok is a little .. tense around hyunsoo, although still comfortable. recently though, hyunsoo's disposition has been getting darker and inhyeok is getting worried about him. .. (read more)
INTERACTIONS. late night telephone calls that usually end with hyunsoo falling asleep while on the phone / inhyeok already having hyunsoo's favorite drink or snack out on the counter when hyunsoo comes by / walking out to the far reaches of town and looking down at all the small houses / hyunsoo trying to give inhyeok music rec's / hyunsoo bringing inhyeok over to his grandparents' place whenever he can to get inhyeok out of his home environment / hyunsoo vowing to punch inhyeok's dad one day and inhyeok stumbling over himself to tell him no /
mom and dad ; i wish it wasn't like this...
@ mom : inhyeok doesn't have as bad of a relationship with his mother as he does his father, but there is definitely some strained moments in their interactions. there's a sort of festering resentment within him when it comes to his mother. she's docile, so ready to bend over backwards to make the gas station to work, to make their family work. but when it comes to actually helping her son? she's worthless. however, there's also a need to make her proud, and it's a source of inner conflict within himself that he can't quite fulfill her needs. but who am i to be what she wants? he thinks sometimes. i'm not perfect...
@ dad : inhyeok's dad is a figure that practically engulfs inhyeok's entire being. he is always there, nudging inhyeok's back or hitting the back of his head. "why are you so flimsy?" he says, face hidden in the shadows of their house. "am i raising a boy or a sapling?" inhyeok feels cold around his father, simultaneously angry and afraid of this man. he's too Big for inhyeok to handle, too heavy of a topic to digest. he wants to make his father proud but he knows that he cannot fulfill what his father wants. he tucks tail and runs too much for his liking, but he can't find any other choice.
INTERACTIONS. silent family dinners with a soundtrack consisting of plates clattering and utensils scraping / dad slapping inhyeok's back whenever he laughs in front of customers a little too hard / mom watching inhyeok from his cracked bedroom door /
BACKGROUND saeho and inhyeok talk a lot about the role of the son in the family and what was to be expected of them. saeho relates his experience as this new "black sheep" of baeju to inhyeok. inhyeok expresses his fears about not being The Son for his father. they speak at length about expectations, about feeling more like atlas bearing the weight of the world than a functioning human being.
inhyeok makes various allusions to his homouality to saeho, to which saeho seems a little more understanding than your average person. but inhyeok's not one to make judgements of others, certainly not in his position. they talk at length about his struggles with toxic masculinity, the relationship he has with hyunsoo. inhyeok uses saeho as his own personal venting target and he knows he shouldn't, but saeho gives him That Look and he can't stop talking...
INTERActions saeho could see right through him. even when inhyeok would be spouting for twenty minutes about how little he thinks of his father, or how he would brush off hyunsoo as "just a friend", saeho would be there with his sly grin and arched eyebrow. and that was all it took for inhyeok to crack, mumbling out the truth / mutual looks in the hallway that inhyeok ducks away from and saeho sends a wave in greeting / saeho giving inhyeok a sort of pitying look and inhyeok blowing up, only to apologize profusely and run out of the room / saeho looking up the child services number and switching tabs before inhyeok can see him / saeho asking hyunsoo about inhyeok's family life behind inhyeok's back /
+ inhyeok realizes that with saeho disappearing, how little they all mean to him. thus, with saeho's departure, inhyeok kind of resents him. " him," he'll say. "if we're that forgettable for him, then we'll forget him too! baeju isn't his home anymore and he's not my in' teacher." but deep down, he misses his confidante and relies on him more than he realizes.
"DON'T WE ALL WISH WE WERE SAEHO? BAEJU BLOWS"
