nice to meet you !

KIM MARI "'kay, what should we order guys?" "i don't know, but let's get some kim mari (seaweed rolls) for sure." "what? i for sure what?" "...*everyone bursts into laughter*" it was at a simple meal that the tenants were having at school food - while half of them were discussing the menu, the other half were discussing their day or scrolling through their phones. mari was doing the latter, drifting in and out of the bits of conversation she heard around her until some form of the cocktail party effect kicked in and she snapped her head up from the rectangular device. it's not the funniest thing, but laughter ensues, and the nickname sticks, usually coming up when the dish is served at any meal. it's not the most distinct nickname, but it's unique to mari, and is used often enough that her ig handle was once @seaweed, thanks to a dare.
IDK pls give her some cute nicknames

appearance.
SHE'S BEAUTY, SHE'S GRACE cha mari has been told multiple times that she doesn't need makeup because she's naturally pretty, but mari likes looking good. she likes feeling put together and confident, and makeup helps her achieve that. but of course there's more to it - you have to walk in strides, chin up, chest out. her hair (once brown, now a striking red that is slowly fading to pink) is always soft and ready to flip, her nails are always done, and she never leaves the house without her eyebrows on. mari puts lots of thought into her outfits and, if you couldn't tell, her appearance in general, but she truly believes a girl's greatest asset is her smile, and is usually found flashing those pearly whites.
IN THE JEANS it's hard for even her to deny, however, that she isn't blessed with good genes. she does look fine without makeup, and she has fast metabolism, which has saved her from suffering the wrath of many late night ramens. she's always been pretty tall, but if the 172 cm weren't enough, her leg:torso ratio is somewhere around 9845739:1. "zaddy long legs!!" *kicks leg up*

fashion.
WORK IT OUT the only uniform requirement they have at the cafe is a baby blue apron, decorated all over with patches of different patterns and cat heads, so mari just wears that over her daily attire. it can be a dilemma, wanting to dress cute but also not wanting to get cat hair all over her nice outfits, but mari deals. usually, though, she tends to go more casual, since it's more comfortable to deal with the kitties in pants than a cute overall dress.
KICK IT BACK "i have a good fashion sense, i just don't have the money to show it!" mari actually only owns like 3 pairs of shoes, but they get her where she needs to go, so she's fine with that. same for her clothes ! she rewears things a lot, but it all depends on how you wear it, so mari makes do. upon opening her closet, you'll be greeted with lots of soft™ vibes - loose-fit blouses, beige color schemes, linen pants, skirts, and overall dresses.

let's get to know you

personality.
  APT #'S RESIDENT SUNSHINE
  SEE : OPTIMISTIC, ALTRUISTIC, AFFECTIONATE,
                   RETICENT, NAIVE, UNCOMMUNICATIVE
mari's always been happy. she never cried a lot as a baby and has viral-worthy videos of a toddler version of her cackling away, jjajjang sauce all over. fast forward to today, and it's basically the same. she rarely cries, only ever seen doing so when she watches cat videos on her period, and she still cackles the same way she did as a baby - minus the jjajjang sauce. it's no surprise that she's always called nicknames like vitamin, happy virus, etc., because cha mari is always smiling. it's always just been easier to be happy, and she's found that it helps those around her when she looks on the bright side of things. mari's not the overbearing type of jolly that just pisses people off, though, but she's empathetic and can read other people well enough that she just knows how to cheer them up. of course it doesn't always work, since some people are tougher nuts to crack, but no one can really deny that mari is pleasant to be around.
'pleasant to be around' is quite an understatement, actually - mari loves to have fun. she loves laughing and making people laugh, and she usually succeeds in doing so. she has quite the character and many people wouldn't hesitate to call her weird since she does things like makchum in public, burp while wearing dresses, bark at her friends, burst into random opera while alone in her room, etc. mari's a jokester and she's definitely childish sometimes and just the fact that she's always smiling makes people wonder if she's ever actually mad or upset or if she even has feelings or if she ever takes things seriously.
but of course she does - cha mari just has lots of trouble acknowledging and expressing emotions other than joy. and she's found that being optimistic is so much more convenient for everyone, so she usually decides to be just that. mostly her happiness is genuine, but oftentimes, mari hides her real feelings behind a smile. over the years it's gotten too easy - it used to be just in public that she would swallow her anger or sadness, but now anything that could possibly burden her is immediately pushed to the back of her mind, supposedly for the sake of everyone including her. in reality, though, it's only hurting mari, keeping her from being expressive about what she wants and understanding herself and her identity and ultimately messing her up on the inside because she just bottles it all up.
additionally, it doesn't help that mari rarely ever puts herself first. she truly believes that it's okay if she's the worst off and is always so much more invested in making sure other people are comfortable. if someone makes a joke and the victim looks slightly triggered, mari will lightly try to take the attention off of them. "ahahah, awww, don't say that!!" if she's talking with someone and asks a question that makes them hesitate a bit, she'll immediately backtrack. "if you don't want to answer, it's totally fine." she's just very observant and helpful, which can be surprising to people who will think, upon first sight, that she's just kind of ditzy and dumb.
slowly, though, mari is learning to talk to the people she trusts about things that she goes through, thoughts that she has, etc. she's learning to acknowledge her feelings and give herself credit and stand up for herself and show the world that even though she takes pride in that grin of hers, cha mari is so much more than that.

history.
BROKEN FAMILY mari's childhood was pretty uneventful, despite feeling a little lonely sometimes. her parents split when she was very young, leaving her under the custody of just her mom, who had trouble adjusting to being the only breadwinner in the family. she worked two small jobs, one during the day and one during the night, and it was just enough to keep the family going. the downside was that mari didn't get to spend a lot of time with her mom, since she was always out, but it wasn't a sob story. sure she was home alone a lot, but that helped her mature a bit quicker than other kids and it allowed her to get closer to the kids at her school, i.e. jaehyuk and crew. the group of friends spent a significant amount of time at mari's house, since it was always empty, and mari welcomed the company. her mom was fine with it too, always feeling bad for not being able to be with her daughter, and even now is grateful to mari's friends for spending so much time with her. that doesn't mean mari never spent any time with her mom, though - there were weekends and holidays and birthdays and mari's mom always did her best to assure mari that she was always there if she needed her.
BROKEN HEARTS mari knew it wasn't that easy, though, and that's a big reason as to why she's grown up to be so reserved and inexpressive. she didn't want to burden her mom, who was always working so hard for her, so she kept things to herself a lot, insisting that 'everything's fine, school is fine, i'm fine', etc. and it was, generally, but when it wasn't, mari found that she couldn't express that. having become so used to just saying everything was fine, she didn't know how to put her feelings into words and so just didn't.
tenant life.
occupation. caretaker of the cutest cats in myeongdong !!
lifestyle.
MON, WED mari's earliest class is at 10, and the rest of her classtimes are scattered, with instruction ending completely by 4pm. mari doesn't work on these days, so she spends the rest of the day (and the breaks in between classes) studying or meeting friends for dinner or binging we bare bears or exploring cute cafes or dragging other tenants to hang out with her or lingering around jinu's workplace or shopping or sleeping at home or stopping by the convenience store or (very rarely) cleaning her room (and even more rarely, the apartment) or practicing her kpop dances because hey, the stuff you see at coin nrb isn't produced without effort.
TUES, THURS, FRI on tuesdays and thursdays, class starts at 9, and the school day ends at 1. mari checks into work at 4, using the time in between to grab lunch - which can vary from being a bowl of buldak at the convenience store to chicken+beer with friends (lunch dates with jinu??!!) - and then stop by the bookstore or wherever to kill time until she needs to be at work. she'll usually stay at the cafe until closing, spending her time taking and making drink orders, conversing casually with customers, cleaning the litter box, brushing the cats' teeth, etc. she's quite the jack of all trades when it comes to working at the cafe, doing everything happily, until it comes to being the mascot or dealing with customers who disregard their rules for hygiene and safety. then she's a bit less enthusiastic. "you know what day it is~!" "...oh, no, my leg! it's - i think it's broken ooohhhh..." "hurry up mari." *sigh* fridays tend to rank high on mari's 'favorite days of the week' list (which, yes, is something she actually has for no real reason) because she doesn't have class. instead she opens up shop at the cafe at 11 (many times waking up with only just enough time to get ready and get out, other times awaking to early friday morning shenanigans of the apt, which usually tend to be nothing other than a groggy jaehyuk and/or joonyoung brewing coffee) and works until around 4, getting off to then go off and study or hang out with friends or whatever she can fill the rest of her day with !
WEEKENDS mari fantasizes that fridays + weekends would be the days she would work on content for her youtube channel - if she had one, that is. or rather, the courage (and income) to do it. but it's mostly because these are the days where she has the most free time. sometimes she'll take up a weekend shift if needed or she'll work on a school project, but most of the time she's either lounging in bed watching her animation tv shows or in cute cafes, watching her animation tv shows writing or drawing or just browsing her laptop. and then there's the occasional trip to go see family, or the spring cleaning, or hang-outs with friends, or outings with the tenants.

apartment life.
A LOVER cha mari, the apartment's very own happy virus. a giggly drunk, cackles in her sleep, and very much the life of the party at nrb, she's always there to brighten someone's day. it's hard to hate mari, because mari doesn't hate anyone and she's quite the ideal roommate. she cleans after herself (generally), she'll willingly clean the bathroom (sometimes), and she can make food when she needs to (mostly late night ramen)! buuut, of course, nobody's perfect - she can use up lots of wifi, due to her addiction to animated tv shows and knowing brother, and sometimes she forgets to clean her hair from the shower walls (which she can never deny, because who else has pink hair in the house ㅠㅠ), and there have been many a time where she knocks out at 9pm on a saturday, disappointing the rest of the tenants who just want to pARTY
NOT A FIGHTER speaking of partying, mari's not really the type. she's the physical embodiment of the phrase 'you don't need drugs to have fun' - because for goodness sake she drinks her peach soju with bendy straws. alcohol honestly just doesn't taste that good to her, unless it's fruit flavored. and maybe carbonated. she'll enjoy the occasional chicken + beer combo or a nice margarita at dinner, but that's usually the extent of it. she'll get tipsy, but she doesn't like the experience of being drunk as a donkey and having to wake up the next morning with no memories of the previous night. she sees no reason to smoke any sort of cigarette and has never touched substances and just likes to have control over herself in general. that doesn't mean she doesn't like to party, though, and she'll go out clubbing on saturday nights with the tenants without much bribing needed. because what's cha mari without the fun?
friends list.

kim joonyoung // contact: joonold
mari has loved getting to know joonyoung over the years - he's matured so much and has become such an eccentric person with such a unique personality. honestly, she just finds him really funny. she jokes around with him all the time about how 'fake' he is, being such a friendly worker at the cafe one moment and then the next yelling around the apartment, drunk out of his head. his drinking habits are the one thing she dislikes the most about him, but it doesn't push her away from him. instead, there have been many a night where mari tucks joonyoung into bed (mildly meaning throwing a blanket in the direction of the couch he's knocked out on), many a morning where groggy joonyoung wakes up to mari cooking hangover ramen. it's returning a favor, she says, for always having our backs and making sure our dumb asses don't lose this house. because of course joonyoung does his fair share of watching out for mari, too - sometimes she feels like she can be even crazier when joonyoung's around, because there's someone else who can be responsible, so she'll let loose a little more thanks to him. also, you bet your momma's necklace she calls him joonyoung-ie. "joonyoung-ie, let's switch cafes for a day, i need to see these so-called devils." played by exo's lee jongdae

kim jaehyuk // contact: soft™
over the years, mari has found that her and jaehyuk are actually quite similar - hyuk is just a bit, well, softer. they both are their own worst enemies, being hardest on themselves rather than anyone else, and they both tend to have the mediator role in the apartment or in relationships in general. as a result, their friendship is very, hmm. peaceful, you could say. they've never had any trouble with each other (and probably never will) and their friendship consists of lots of compliments, encouragement, coin noraebang dates, discounted line merchandise, etc. it's a beautiful friendship, really, and it grows deeper as the both of them help each other mature - jaehyuk encouraging mari to talk about her problems and mari encouraging jaehyuk to stop being so hard on himself. "give yourself some credit, hyuk, you're the most well-intentioned person i know." played by exo's byun baekhyun

han soojung // contact: sooj
mari's best friend at ewha ! soojung is a fashion design major, mixxmixx employee, and mari's voice of reason and un-ending support. they're pretty different, but opposites attract, no? soojung knows what she wants and how to get it, and she always speaks her mind. her strong presence makes up for mari's sense of timidness, and usually she just ends up speaking for the both of them since she knows mari well enough to know what she wants. the two spend their time together taking pictures of each other, visiting ig famous restaurants, doing each others nails, crying together as they watch movies late into the night, discussing the things they could do if they started a youtube channel together, etc. they're good friends, but even soojung doesn't get to hear the deep dark secrets mari has. it's not that mari doesn't trust sooj, she does - it's just hard for her to physically speak about her problems. soojung doesn't completely understand, but she has an idea. "but still, you better know damn well that i'm here for your emotional crap." played by jang dahye

hwang jinu // contact: (h)wangjanim
it's a forbidden love, really. jinu goes to hongik university and is a year younger than mari, but that's not where the scandal comes from. it's the fact that he works at the dog cafe a few blocks down. that cafe and mari's cafe have a playful rivalry going on - the typical battle of dog lovers vs cat lovers. despite the civil war, though, the two cafes have their moments and even work together on deals or collab events. it was at one of these events that mari and jinu met - he was tall and good looking and the cats loved him and mari loved him. she saw reason as to why her babies favored him so much (though simultaneously was jealous because it had taken them long to warm up to even her) - he was hecka good looking. mari really does not think she has ever seen anyone so good looking, and is silently raving about it on the inside throughout the whole event. but of course all the female customers are flocking towards him, and mari doesn't want to be not chill, so she keeps her distance, trying to focus on just doing her job. things aren't that easy, though, once jinu randomly approaches her and strikes up a conversation. it's nothing too flirtatious, but it's definitely not just small talk. it's enough to make mari wonder about his intentions. he asks her what school she goes to, how she started working at the cafe, what major she's in, who her favorite cat is (which, by the way, is an invalid question, she refuses to admit she has a favorite), who her favorite dog is (which she would say is him but how do you say that in a cute way and not a 'men are dogs' type of way), etc. all these questions that were innocent enough, but just below the line of surface level that mari had to ask what his intentions were. "i just...really want to get to know you." he sounds honest enough, and he seems to make it a point that he's for real on their next date. he asks her all these questions and seems genuinely interested in even these small details about mari and they are bASICALLY 썸타ing. they both have feelings for each other and they just find that when they're together it's really fun and they're always happy and they feel good. they just really really enjoy each other's presence - which is basically the extent of what mari has told anyone about jinu. none of the tenants nor soojung nor her fellow cafe employees know in depth how mari feels about jinu. they just know that she has a fling, and even if she doesn't admit it, they know she's deep into it and that it's definitely gonna go somewhere soon. "hey, mari, wanna grab dinner tomorrow night? there's this place with really good happy hour deals." "uhh..." "you have a date with your mans don't you." "my what??? i don't know what you're talking about, i don't have a mans." "guys, mari's not coming tomorrow, she has a date!" "no i can go with you guys!! i don't have a date, it's not a date-" "mmm that's not what he thinks~!"

cat cafe staff // group chat: cat lvrs (*¯ ³¯*)♡
with such a small staff, it wasn't hard for mari to befriend all the employees, and while their shifts don't always overlap, over the years mari has spent at least one day with each of them and gotten to know them through those shifts and staff dinners and days when personal life is slow so all six of them somehow end up at the cafe, kind of just chilling in the presence of each other and the cats.
kim jaeseob (25) kim jaeseob is the manager of the cafe ! currently he's in graduate school, trying to become a nurse, but for now he runs the cafe so he can both make a living and relieve stress through cat therapy. he's the oldest, but he's not that much older than his employees, so they all joke around with him a lot and like to poke fun and play pranks on him, but he goofs off with them, pranking them back and threatening to leave cat hair in their drinks. ultimately, though, he is the boss and has the most professional air about him than any of the other employees do. jaeseob is easily the most sophisticated and charming, especially when it comes to the female customers. jaeseob to his customers: "ah yes, thank you so much for stopping by! come again!" jaeseob to his staff: "i literally hate you guys sometimes god spare me what did i do wrong" played by yoo seungho
seok hamin (20) the youngest employee at the cafe, hamin usually gets subjected the most to the dreaded uniform. the rest of the crew feels bad...but never too bad. he always whines about it, but he'll do it anyways, usually after making someone owe him a snack from the convenience store. he lives up to his title as the maknae, being the most mischevious and the most whiny, but he generally listens well and is like a little brother to everyone. hamin holding the cat head: "if i wear the uniform, can i change our group name to kitties and ?" everyone: "nO HAMIN."  played by knk's kim jihun
jin longguo (21) his dad is chinese, his mom is korean, and he moved here when he was 15, so longguo is very good at korean. he doesn't even look strikingly chinese, so the employees actually went a good 6 months without knowing he was half. it didn't help that he was really shy at first, but now that he's been working for about 2 years, longguo has opened up to them and showed them his quirky sides. he's a jokester, too, teasing the other employees in chinese so they don't understand, and has self-proclaimed himself father cat because he loves cats so much - so much that sometimes he forgets to work and just plays with them. hamin to the rest of staff: "is it just me, or is the pronunciation of 'did you eat' in chinese very similar to that of 'you er' in korean?" longguo: *shrugs* played by kim yongguk/jin longguo
yoo daon (22) daon has somehow avoided ever wearing the mascot uniform for the past year, saying she works too hard on her hair and makeup to let it go to waste like that. that's no excuse, especially to mari, but it's hard to do anything but just let it go when it's daon. she's their resident princess, exploding with aegyo and great customer service and somehow never breaking a sweat through all the jumping around she does. she's loved by everyone, but mari's determined to get her in that suit at least once. daon at least once a week: "guys, do you think this face doesn't come with a price?" played by playback's lee hayoung
hwangbo jinri (23) the wang unni at the cafe, jinri's the gal who would probably take over if jaeseob were to suddenly die in a freak accident. except she'd probably be the one to cause the freak accident...jinri and jaeseob squabble and bicker all the time, resulting in inevitable teasing about 'oh, the married couple's at it again!'. she's of small stature, but she does most of the grunt work, which just means cleaning after the cats and the boys and handling the register and unfavorable customers. jinri to jaeseob: "i'd appreciate if you stopped flirting with our customers and did your job of managing these kids *motions to hamin*" staff: "she's jealous" "i ship it" played by elris' choi yoona
the screening process.
"hey ! it's great to have you on board ! i just gotta ask some preliminary questions first." "ay ay, captain!" mari salutes jaehyuk with one hand, then the other. "bombs away!" the 21 year old female is lying on her bed in her dorm room, her laptop on her stomach. jaehyuk's face shines from the left side of the screen through a video messaging app, and on the right side of the screen is an online shopping site. hyuk is faced with an unappealing angle of his good friend, but it's nothing he's never seen before. mari scrolls through the clothes as jaehyuk starts his little interview.

"soooo... if we need groceries .. are you gonna be our midnight milk run or not ?" mari purses her lips and mocks hyuk's dragged-out tone. "uhhhh...depends if i'm awake or not??" she chuckles somewhat sheepishly and then squints at her friend, expecting him to know her answer to this sort of question. "yeah, which you probably aren't. i don't know why i even asked." mari laughs, a short burst of a chortle. "HAH yeah i don't know why either." "but seriously, how does anyone get tired at 9pm on a saturday ??" mari shrugs, not apologetic at all. "i don't know, man."

"is the customer always right ? hmm tell me ..." mari's eyes widen to show that she likes this question / has a passionate answer and she gasps. "NO. no they are not." the first 'no' was stern and loud, but she said it with a smile, and then she laughs. "but really, they're not always right. i mean...i'm pretty sure i know my babies better than any customer out there, you know!!" she nods her head admittedly, making the :/ face wtf moon what is writing. "what's the worst customer you can get at a cat cafe though? 'cause, like...it's so different from, like, merchandise stores." jaehyuk asks. mari nods in response, acknowledging the difference, and then wrinkles her nose. "hey, hey, hey, don't disregard us animal breeders!!" "you wHAT??!!" jaehyuk yells in alarm while mari bursts into laughter. "I'M JUST KIDDING, i'm just kidding wow we do not breed our animals please i am so kidding please do not...imagine...that...or...ok next question."

"why should i share an apartment with you ? sell yourself to me like you sell your products !" mari sets her laptop to the side, then proceeds to stretch, facing her back to the screen. it's a full-out stretch, complete with shaking legs and groans emitting from  that assimilate the sounds of dying animals. "uhhhHHhHhhHNNNGGUAAH" jaehyuk is still unfazed. "excuse me, noob who faces her back to the camera, please answer my question." mari lets out a concluding groan. "uuuuuugghhhokay." she lets out a heavy sigh, finishing up her stretch and just lies there, continuing to moan. "uhhHHHhHHhhmmmmmm well i'm. just. pretty amazing, you know?" she slurs her words together, suddenly feeling groggy after that stretch. hyuk gives his friend a look. "please don't tell me you're tired already, it's only 5pm on a thursday." mari laughs amid a yawn. "nO, don't worry, i'm not tired!! ok, why should you live with me? well, i mean, as kids, we were at my house all the time anyways so you've basically already lived with me..." she trails off as she realizes that her evidence is not credible, but decides to just go with it, grinning as she tries not to laugh. "you know? like...you know how i live, so...it won't be hard to adjust. also, hyuk, i know you love me so why wouldn't you want to live your best life and wake up to cha mari every morning?" jaehyuk rolls his eyes, but doesn't do anything to deny the fact that mari brightens up daily life.

"apartment pet : yes or no. and also ... should we get a raccoon.." mari's eyes are already wide once jaehyuk says 'pet', and as he trails off uncertainly, she responds, determined. "YES. i am one hundred percent all for it, raccoon or whatever it may be, i will love it." jaehyuk chuckles, having predicted this answer. it always struck him as unusual that mari was such an animal lover when her mom was allergic to most types of animal fur. she always loved seeing dogs on the street and she never passed up a chance to play with any of the gangs' pets, but then never returned home without dutifully washing her hands. *oh well,* jaehyuk speculated, thinking about his own life as a poor, broke college student who just wants to get out of the house and away from brown the bear. *i guess you can't always get what you want.*

"pay in cash or card ? like are you gonna make the poor worker run all the way to get change for your filthy paper money or..."  mari makes a face. "well, i usually pay with card anyway, but my paper money is never filthy, please." she flips her hair playfully and laughs, thinking about her currently thin wallet. "i mean, i tend to not have a lot of cash on me usually, so..." her eyes suddenly light up. "OH my goodness do you remember that one time i forgot my card at home and only had like exactly three dollars on me-" "and i had to pay for your friend's birthday present? yes, i remember." jaehyuk nods, cutting mari off as he sighs in remembrance of one of mari's many Dumb Moments™. mari simply cackles in response, "hey, i paid you back though!"

"top five words to describe me and .. go ! hopefully cute, charming, charismatic, cool, and confident are in your list. i definitely embody the 5 c's if i do say so myself..." mari gives jaehyuk a pointed look at this unexpected and unpatented confidence. "the five c's, huh??" she lets out a cackle that she was trying to hold in, so it ends up only coming out as a "khYAK", and then she proceeds to think about how to best describe her friend. "let's see, how about...childish, comfortable to be around..." she looks up, still thinking, but then backtracks. "wait. comfortable...to...be...around...bro that's five words right there, including childish. HAH!" she laughs in victory, having found a way to cheat the system and have become the ultimate winner because there can only be one alpha

"aaaand we're done here. feel free to help yourself to some street food while i pore over your credentials." mari stretches again, finally sitting up. jaehyuk is getting ready to hang up the video call when a bone in mari's body cracks from her stretch, and he looks up in alarm. mari bursts into laughter at the shock on hyuk's face, and accidentally ends the call amidst her laughing frenzy.
