appearance
Standing at nearly 173cm, Juri was always the tallest in her group. But she is a willowy sort, lacking a lot of curves, and remembering being a tall, gangly mess as a child in her primary school years. In many ways Juri is like a cat with her calm expressions and languid movements. Her hair is currently blonde, though the roots are beginning to show and she is probably due a touch up. In the past, her hair would be various shades, short and long. These days it's kept in a practical style, easy for her to tie up for practice or for when she is working in the studio; though she retains the blonde and has used temporary colors to add some fun to it. She does wear glasses, but has contacts for most of her daily activities.Stylewise Juri's everyday involves a hat, usually a snapback, loose top, and shorts or leggings. She has gone on a diet recently to lose weight for the show, and dropped 4kg before appearing.

personality
TRAITS:  Phlegmatic, Communicative, Reticent, Straight forward, Lethargic, Irritable, Honest- tries to have a cool, aloof image but really is too compassionate for that, Passionate, Emotionally Constipated honestly.

Steady, solid, ever rational Juri. Serious about her passions and dedicated almost to a fault, Juri doesn't normally have time for the nonsense around her, nor does she care to get dragged into it if she can help it. Notably, outside of performing and being around excitable fans, Juri is rather placid and hard to nail down when it comes to determining her feelings on things. It's not that she doesn't feel things: her reactions are just fairly subdued. Juri's brows raising in alarm is the equivilant of another person screaming and shouting in fright. Juri was once a calming presense for those around her. She can be relied upon to keep her own emotions in check when needed. However this control also makes her seem mechanical and controlled. Juri doesn't share her more personal emotions easily, maybe because she herself isn't too certain of them or how correct they are. Her lack of excitable emotions also lend to her lethrgic, easy flowing nature. Let it be. But she sometimes just appears lazy or unwilling or uninterested, when this may not be the case. Juri is just not the most excitable person.

Don't mistake her stolid nature as lacking passion or emotion. Juri is very communicative and has no issue when it comes to speaking what's on her mind when concerning a present situation. She believes that most things should be spoken about directly: skirting aorund an issue is not going to help anyone. While she might be preceived as a little too honest, it is not her intention. She's not out to directly hurt anyone per se. But she also doesn't think you should be lied to because that won't help you either. Her straight forward nature also extends to her personal life and work ethic. If something isn't working, change it. Don't be afraid to ask for help and to listen to the advice of those who might know better. Juri understands the value of just listening. Don't be scared to admit defeat. If you ask Juri she'll tell you to, "Let it go. It's okay to lose once in a while." And her communication isn't always just blunt, truths. Sometimes it's just a simple observation. "Ohh, the cat is really cute." or "Wow, you're hair is really soft." are just as common as, "You totally messed up that last part."

But while communicative, emotionally constipated may also fit her too well. While honest about current observations or when asked her opinio: her personal emotions? Really Juri doesn't understand them herself half the time, and when they conflict with her persona she just gets irritable. A tired or annoyed Juri can be easily spotted when her truths become tinged with bite and spite. "I know you're tired. You should sleep. I told you to sleep three times now. Go to sleep, or stop complaining because no one wants to hear it anymore." She is especially flustered when put into a situation where she has to be personally vulnerable. Give her a hard choreo? Sure thing. Have her write down the name of the people she misses the most or wants a better relationship with? Juri will freeze and proably begin internally hissing like a cat at something distasteful. Really despite her honesty, Juri suffers from simply not stating outright what she likes, dislikes, and just gets super annoyed and angry if you pressure her to do so. It's not that she doesn't like you; but get out of her face and stop trying to make her melt you brats. Keep pushing her, and Juri can be downright juvenile in her insults and is not above the silent treatment. Girl needs to relax a little.

And to make things worse for her still: Juri is far too compassionate to just be a jerk all the time. Save all the cats, feed all the children, all that jazz. She just doesn't want you to know she has a soft spot. It ruins her image (hah). //person gives her a sad puppy look. Juri: "You...just...no...! ARGH. FINE. Come here." She may be uncomfortable with emotion, but she's not so heartless as to leave you crying all alone. Just don't expect her to cry on your shoulder later when she's upset. Really Juri's true nature shines when she's allowed to work in her passions. On stage she is having fun, smiling, and truly loves when others show appreciation for her work. She's at her most talkative and excited when she can expunge upon these things. It really is the reason why she does the idol and producer thing afterall. And while she may not show it outwardly, Juri gives it her all for these things and others she feels passionate or compassion for. She's just uncertain these days as to where these begin and end anymore, and it pains her the most that there is any doubt in her sincerity.

history

Growing up watching the sea and learning the piano from her grandmother, young Juri always wanted something beyond just finding a job in the shipbuilding industry. Her father was a shipbuilder, her grandfather was one, and so on with all of their wives staying at home to make a happy home. While there was nothing inherently wrong with that: Juri was not about that life.

You could blame her grandmother for turning her onto music in her early life. Juri loved the piano so much: she adored the lessons, and they were the highlight of her otherwise mundane *read normal* days. Even after her rudimentry lessons ended, she continued to practice. Always a quizzical child, it didn't take long for Juri to pursue things outside of just piano. She had notebooks and files filled with lyrics, tracks she'd tried her hand at composing, and other odds and ends as she pursued her interests. By the time high school started, Juri had already decided she needed to move to Seoul and pursue dreams outside of the sea and ships. Fortunately Juri had support from family despite their initial disapproval of her desire to not follow the family business, and moved in with an uncle who worked out of the city. There she would try to attend an arts school and eventually go to a university. Sure it would be hard; but Juri was up for the challenge and jumped towards it without looking back.

It was her uncle's wife who turned her onto the idea of being an idol. While Juri insisted her dreams lay in music production, her aunt pointed out that many have used the experience as a gateway. Plus, wouldn't it be amazing if she actually debuted? Show Juri some MVs and performances, tell her she was pretty enough to be one, and now Juri couldn't shake the idea out of her head. Juri's new plan involves getting into a company, debuting, and then using that as her platform to get to greater things. She tried the typical large companies, was turned away for either lack of skill or looks, and finally she was accepted by YNB.

Juri would eventually debut in 2014 with YNB's second girlgroup Paradise. And at first it was great. They had some minor success in the beginning and perhaps with the right promotion they could have made a name for themselves. But as often is the case, it was not meant to be.(more details in previous experience)

With the "flop", the group found themselves struggling to make ends meat. There was also talk of YNB going bankrupt, selling off contracts for not only Paradise but their other groups, Things are increasingly bleak for YNB: they are a sinking ship. While some groups might have grown closer due to the hardships: Paradise became increasingly distant and bitter towards each other. The only one of the group who didnt have to find work outside of the company was Juri as they kept her mostly employed as a contractor not only for their music production but for other companies. This made much of the group distrust Juri and Juri to become more and more resentful that they dont trust her. There is a lot of finger pointing. The girls just dont know who to blame for their failure and have no idea what their future holds. Many have already tried to find new companies to take them on, but so far to no avail. For their sanity they cannot even live together anymore. The once good feelings have faded except for Jihae who is the sole person keeping the group together and remotely feeling like a team (contracts with YNB aside).

So when Jihae asks their three youngest members if they would be willing to join P99 since she genuinely believes they represent the best of them? How would any of them say no? Not only is this their last shot: it might be their company's. By all rights Juri should be content in her role. She has worked hard to be recongized despite her young age in the music world. But she's not. Her work is uncredited, and most of the monies for it goes directly to YNB. And she had grown to love being an idol, loving every moment when a fan would actually recognize them. Strict schedules aside, Juri felt alive performing. Juri misses being an idol so much, and the comraderie she once had with the other girls. And if this means not only she but maybe they as a group could rally up and try again? Okay. Juri will not hesitate to give it one more shot.

trivia
  • Just cats. She loves them. She swears she will have an army of them one day.

  • She has worked fairly extensively in the studio despite her young age, often one of the more creative forces in Paradise's songs, and later actually writing and co-producing Aalow Aalow and Journey to Atlantis.

  • She has also helped produce for KNK, and Rain was partially written by her.

  • TS, MBK, and DSP also have contracted her through YNB to work on their songs, though this is mostly uncredited work.

  • Is very skilled in piano and some guitar.

  • While in Paradise, they often considered her the group "dad" as she had little scruples about even scolding the older members when they wouldn't listen to Jihae. And she may have cracked a few bad dad jokes from time to time. Totally straight faced.

  • Does not scare easily with "normal" things: she's the resident spider whisperer.

  • But secretly is terrified of ghosts and thinks one might live in their previous dorm.

  • Not so secretly is a Cube stan. She can dance to Shine like a pro and bemoans 4Minute.

  • Her current favorite song is Hyuna's Babe.

  • Is fairly close to KNK as having known them from their debut and worked on the songs and albums, and in particular is close to Youjin and Heejun.

  • Favorite food is sweet potato. Least favorite is mushrooms.

  • Allergic to shellfish.

The official lead vocal and third youngest of Paradise, Kyungmi and Juri have been considered very close at one point, despite that the pair are far from being the same. Juri likes documentaries - Kyungmi would rather watch a rom com. Juri appreciates the composition choices in a new song - Kyungmi worries about how their stage outfits would work with their stage performance. The pair just have different priorities in the group. Kyungmi is ever the more personable one, the one good at speaking to others at their level. They spent many hours together perfecting performances, getting into mischief, and having a good laugh together. But with the growing tensions in the group, and the ever increasing finger pointing...

"Your voice keeps cracking on that note."
"At least I can even remotely hit that note."
"Lot of good it does you when you can't sing and dance at the same time."
"You take that back brat!"

With them both going on Produce 99, both being told by the older group members they consider them to be the best of them and to do Paradise proud, tensions have grown high. Sure, both want their group to succeed, But they also don't always believe the other is there for the group. Juri believes Kyungmi will jump ship the first chance she gets. Kyungmi has grown steadily more distant and reluctant to participate in activities: she has even begun studying business in university. Kyungmi thinks Juri just used Paradise as a means and never had it as hard as the others since she was still able to produce outside of their group. At least she had opportunity: the rest of them had to work as chicken delivery. They have agreed to work together for P99. And neither will admit easily that they actually miss the other quite a bit.
Liling

Juri used to help and watch out for Jiwon a lot. "Ling-ah, the rap uses this rhythm.", "Lili, the dance is like this. Follow me.", "Psst, Liling-ah, the camera is right here. Smile." And it was fine because she seemed more than happy to take direction from Juri when needed. Juri even worked hard to give her spotlight during Sugar Sugar. However, with the hiatus of Paradise, there has been less and less interaction between the pair. Like with all the members, Juri has lost the bond she used to have with Jiwon during their hiatus. Fans of Paradise often considered Jiwon the "useless" member, though she does have the advantage of being the maknae. Shes a very exuberant sort and was always entertaining to watch, but this has tempered greatly. She often needs the support of her elder memberssince she suffers from uncertainty and needs consistent reassurance.
Juri hasn't had a reason to dislike Jiwon like she has with other members of Paradise sans Jihae, though Jiwon is one of the ones who has pointed out that Juri got lucky that she didnt have to work outside the company (this probably led to the distance).Jiwon finds herself often between other members as a buffer. Because no one wantsto hurt the maknae who has done nothing wrong. But she lacks the tenacity of their leader to make people get along. If you were to ask her who she prefers over Kyungmi and Juri, she'd probably just cry.

trainee life
Juri knew how to read music and carry a note. She was not a trained singer by any means when she joined YNB and at first believed this would just end with her having a chance to work in the music industry. It may have meant being a trainee for a while but it was experience and she would take it. But YNB had plans to debut a girlgroup again, hoping to try and break out where Bestie had never quite managed to do. Enter Paradise. Despite being there a short time, YNB selected her for debut when one of their original members had to drop for health reasons.
Juri had to focus on dance and vocals, especially the dance aspect. While she can hold a decent note, Juri simply wasn't trained to be a performer. Fortunately for her, Juri pours herself into her endeavors and this was no exception. While Juri was by no means a power vocalist or dancer, she was competent and YNB didn't have a huge trainee pool.
What was tricky for Juri was her short trainee period. She actually came in as a replacement for a different trainee who dropped due to health reasons. Due to this Just didn't have the same repertoire with the other girls for a long time. Thankfully Jihae, Paradise's leader, and Kyungmi were kind enough to her and they formed friendships with her. Though Juri didnt share in their long trainee experience, they knew she worked hard as well. It wasn't until after Pit A Pat that Juri fully felt integrated into the group.

previous experience
Paradise, a 6 member girl group under YNB, debuted in August 2015, with the song Pit a Pat. The members are:

Im Jihae - Leader, main vocal 93
Park Haeyoon - Vocalist, rapper, dancer 94
Cha Seulmi - Vocalist, dancer, visual 95
Kim Kyungmi - Lead Vocalist 96
Lee Juri - Vocalist, dancer 96
Noh Jiwon - Maknae, vocalist, rapper 98

Despite their initial release getting some praise, it was nothing extraordinary and some even pointed out their debut song had the similar title of their senior group Bestie's debut. They followed up in December with What About You, being standout for its kore unique sound compared to Pit a Pat, and their moments of in sync dancing. However, with Gfriend's debut the following month, their comeback was overshadowed in favor of Glass Bead.
Their next two releases,  Sugar Sugar and Aalow Aalow, tapped into a more retro sound in an attempt to make themselves stand out more again. However despite the attempt they still failed to gain traction. There were rumors that the company was steadily losing money and were unable to properly promote them as well. The girls found themselves beginning to tap into their own funds, hosting guerilla promotions with no expectation of monetary return, trying to keep positive that they could still make it in the industry.
However, the group stopped releasing music after the release of Shooting Love in 2016. While it was better received than their previous singles, it wasn't enough. Plus YNB debuted KNK; many of the resources which had been going to Paradise were diverted to KNK. Simply put: YNB couldn't afford to promote both groups. Between working non-idol jobs, some of the members tried their best to promote on shows. Jihae went onto Girl Spirit while Haeyoon and Seulmi appeared on variety but were never set cast members and weren't widely recognizable. Kyungmi started university again. *see chuuwon's app for her activities* And oddly enough Juri seemed to get what she'd been wanting: more active production work. YNB even contracted her out to work on production for other companies like DSP and TS at the largest as a means of earning more money for the company.

Paradise (Laboum as a twin) release schedule:
Pit a Pat - Aug 28, 2014
What About You? - Dec 15, 2014
Sugar Sugar - Mar 26, 2015
Aalow Aalow - Dec 6, 2015
Journey to Atlantis - Apr 6, 2016
Shooting Love - Aug 23, 2016

THE END

comments:   listen. This character was not the one I wanted but it just....ughhhh....I apologize in advance.

scene requests:  I believe in you and you got this!

password:  Juri would be tactical. She of course will sit with the others. But they know very well they aren't most well known. So instead of sitting up front, they're going to sit second row, right smack in the middle. Still in a visible location, but without being presumptuous. She probably won't sit next to Kyungmi though, and force Chuuwon between them.
