Personality
Min Yun is your typical motherly-type. She frets and worries and wants nothing but the best for her family, biological or chosen. She cares for them the best way she can, and makes sure that at the end of the day, no one is harmed or hurt to the best of her abilities. She aims to be someone her members, family, and friends can come to for advice, a nice meal, a happy chat, or even someone to hug or cuddle with.
She protects and defends and even sometimes her thumb to wipe a smudge from another member's face - even (and especially the father of the group. She enjoys playing around with her members, but is the first one to sober up if something happens. She takes her role as caregiver seriously, even though she knows her "kids" aren't literal children anymore.
Though usually calm and collected, she's likely to jump to the aid and support of any of her members if netizens or anyone even slightly offends them. She's fiercely protective and loyal to her members and she will not back down in the slightest from defending them. Her temper can sometimes get the best of her, but she tries to keep it down.
Despite being there for everyone no matter what, Min Yun has trouble opening up herself. She talks to her brother about most things that bother her, but has more difficulty talking with anyone else. Her group members know some of her problems and insecurities, but not everything.
Background
Min Yun was born as the younger of a set of twins in Brooklyn, NY, USA at 12:15am January 1, 1990. Both of them were healthy, and their parents couldn't have been happier to have them both. Her parents had moved to the states ten years prior to the twins being born for job opportunities in the city.
Growing up, Min Yun and her brother spent the summers in Busan with their grandparents while their parents worked in New York. It was a way of having the children keep up with their native culture, and also gave their parents someone to watch the twins while they worked.
Min Yun always loved staying with her grandparents. She loved Busan and she loved the beaches, but mostly she loved her grandmother's music room. There were old records, cassette tapes, and her grandmother bought her her first CD. She loved the baby grand piano that had been in the family for years, and though she ever really caught onto it, she loved the viola her grandmother tried to teach her how to play. She would sing from old song books while her grandmother played the viola and her brother tinkered with the piano. She would dance along to the radio and have the most fun any child could.
During the school year in the states, Min Yun attending after school ballet lessons three times a week, as well as piano twice a week, and vocal training once a week. Though she didn't attend formal lessons while summering in Busan, she did keep up her own training schedule by practicing everything she had learned during the school year.
At the age of eleven, tragedy struck the Kang family. On September 11, 2001, the twins lost their father when the twin towers fell. Min Yun still remembers it as if it were yesterday, as she was preparing for a recital that afternoon. Her father had been so excited that he called to say he was leaving early just ten minutes before the first plane hit. They were going to go for a meal before the recital.
Min Yun, her twin brother, and her mother stayed in the USA only three years after the event before moving to Busan in 2004. Min Yun didn't entirely mind the move, as she re-found her love for music while living at her grandmother's house instead of just visiting. A year after the loss of her father, she gave up on dancing and soon after stopped singing as much. After the permanent move to South Korea, she discovered her voice again. Her grandmother found her a vocal trainer. After working with the same coach for two years, he began talking to Min Yun about auditioning for some of the entertainment companies in Seoul. Her mother wasn't a big fan of it and threatened to end her vocal sessions with him. Min Yun's grandmother stepped in and supported whatever decision Min Yun made.
In 2007, at the age of seventeen, Min Yun auditioned for SM, JYP, YG, and DSP. Though the first three didn't take much interest in her, DSP accepted her on reccomendation from her vocal coach, who happened to be on-staff at the company. He was the reason she had auditioned for DSP, on his suggestion. Min Yun moved to Seoul, her twin brother coming with her.
Min Yun trained for three years at DSP. During that time she first tried to become part of the line-up change to Kara, but hadn't really been offically training long enough to be considered. Her vocal coach had told her to wait for something better. Soon after, she was slated to be put into Rainbow, but was changed out of the line-up at the last minute due to personal issues the company didn't agree with.
Min Yun had become pregnant at the age of nineteen. The father? Her vocal coach, ten years her senior and also, unbeknownst to her, married. A whole lot of commotion happened around the two of them, and Min Yun was let go from the company. She was nowhere near stable enough or even ready to be a mother so young, if ever, but knew she couldn't just abandoned the child. So, in early November 2009, just as the group that she would have been in debuted, Min Yun gave birth to a happy, healthy little girl, Ka Eun.
Min Yun struggled at first to keep a job and take care of her daughter, but with the help of her twin brother, she stayed on her feet. In February of 2012, when the twins were twenty-two, Min Yun's brother got married. His wife loved Ka Eun, thankfully, and the couple offered to take care of Ka Eun if Min Yun ever wanted to try idol life again. She was wary at first, but did miss the idea of performing immensely. She was torn between being there constantly for her almost three year old daughter and of giving herself to the performing arts once more.
In the end, Min Yun reasoned that if she could achieve her dreams, she could show Ka Eun that anything is possible. So she did round after round of auditions, eventually coming to Moon Entertainment. They accepted her, despite her dancing being a little rusty at first - she could never fully forget her years upon years of ballet and her previous almost three years of idol training, but after three years of being out of the industry, a couple stumbles should be expected. The thing that surprised Min Yun, however, was being put in a co-ed line-up almost immediately.
She became attached to anyone and everyone who came through the line-up, even if only for a short while. She was, however, relieved when what would become the final line-up was established. She loves each and every one of her members and spoils them the best she can. She wouldn't trade any of them for the world.
Trivia
— Likes, dislikes, hobbies, habits and trivia.
— Likes: sappy rom-coms, "dad" jokes (though she can't tell a joke to save her life), green tea, video games (though she's not terribly good at them), baking/cooking, helping others, performing, ice cream
— Dislikes: coffee, horror movies (and her groupmates know this), pork, doing aegyo, being late, people insulting her groupmates, talking about her feelings, hiding her daughter
— Hobbies: baking, reading, playing video games (Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon mostly), crocheting, playing piano
— Habits: chewing on the inside of her cheek, tapping her foot subconsciously, feeding snacks to her members if they're sitting near her and she's munching
— Min Yun carries a bag with her no matter where she goes. In the bag is a travel first aid kit including everything from band-aids to allergy medicine, a couple water bottles, a few snacks, her passport, her wallet, keys, a digital camera, extra chargers, and anything else one could think of. She calls it her Grandma Aggie bag, after the character from the Halloweentown movies.
— Min Yun has her driver's license and actually loves to drive. She has her own car, but it stays at her brother's house.
— On September 11 each year, Min Yun tries to make a beach trip in honor of her father, since it was his favorite place to be. If she can't make it, she'll listen to ocean noise CDs or playlists.
— Min Yun wishes the world wasn't so weird about single mothers or idols having children, since she hates hiding Ka Eun's existance.
— Min Yun can play the piano very well, and can still do ballet if asked. She considers both to be her special talents.
— Min Yun loves cats, but is allergic to them. She's also allergic to most laundry detergents and perfumes. She avoids perfumes at all cost, but she takes medicine for her allergy to cats because she can never resist petting ones she sees. (it doesn't always help and sometimes a younger member will playfully scold her when her noses runs and clogs at the same time and she's miserable.)
— Min Yun loves telling the story of her and her brother and when they were born. Her brother likes to pick on her that he's older, even if it's only by forty-five minutes. Min Jun, her twin brother, was born at 11:30pm on December 31, 1989. Min Yun was born at 12:15am on January 1, 1990. So, though being twins, they were born in different years.
— Min Yun loves hugging and hanging off of her members. She's very affectionate and has trouble not doing skinship. She'll of course stop if asked.
— Due to having stretchmarks from her pregnancy, Min Yun doesn't like to wear anything middrift or close to a crop top at all. Not even around her members.
— Min Yun can't tell a joke at all unless she's not trying. She has a habit of remarking to something stupid with an inadvertent stupid/sarcastic comment of her own, due to how her and her brother used to pick on each other. (she usually feels bad for the comment immediately after, evne if it's nothing even remotely offensive, and if enough pouting happens, she's bound to promise to take them to their favorite food.)
— Min Yun makes her own tea blends and absolutely loves hot tea.
— Her inspiration is her grandmother; other than her brother, her grandmother is her favorite person in the world.
— Her favorite food is sushirritos (sushi burritos) and she makes them as often as she can. She also loves potato chips and is seen with a bag almost all the time.
Relations
— Paternal Grandmother / Kang Sobin / 72 / Children's Piano Teacher/Retired Nurse / Sobin is the support of Min Yun's life, other than her brother. Sobin always has calming and comforting words for Min Yun, as well as the truth when the 28-year old needs it. They try to talk at least once a week, and Sobin sometimes keeps Ka Eun on weekends when no one else can watch her. She's in magnificent health for her age.
— Mother / Moon Young Bi / 59 / Business Woman / Min Yun and her mother haven't spoken much since Min Yun decided to try her hand at becoming an idol, and even less so after Ka Eun was born.
— Father / Kang Jin Hae / (would be) 58 / Business Man/Attorney / Min Yun was super close to her father. Though he had gone into business, he had shared a love of music not many expected from him. Min Yun likes to think that he would love and be a big part of Ka Eun's life if he were still alive.
— Twin Brother / Kang Min Jun (Jun/Junnie) / 28 / College Professor / Min Yun and her twin brother talk nearly every day about everything from what they for breakfast to how Ka Eun is doing in school. They've been there for each other their entire lives and can't see life moving on without the other.
— Sister-in-law / Min Moon Yul / 30 / College Professor / Min Yun loves her sister-in-law and also loves the shopping dates they have with Ka Eun whenever they get the chance. They buy too many clothes, watch terrible movies, and stuff themselves so full of sweets it definitely can't be healthy.
— Daughter | Kang Ka Eun / 8 (almost 9; Birthday Nov.4) / Elementary Student / Ka Eun is the light of Min Yun's life. They never take for granted what little time they get to spend together, and Min Yun is both delighted and nervous that Ka Eun has the same love for music that Min Yun had at that age. Ka Eun is a smart, respectful, loving child with a bright outlook on a world she knows isn't as bright as it seems.
— Groupmate|The Father / -- / -- / She thinks of him as her "other half" as far as the group goes, and often refers to him as such. Being the closest in age, she thinks of him as a dear friend, and out of everyone in the group, she goes to him if she isn't having a great day. He's one of the first people she goes to if something great happens as well. She frets over him just as much, if not more, than their "kids."
— Groupmate/The Sun / -- / -- / It's hard to be around her and not be in a good mood. Min Yun loves spending time with this member and loves treating them to sneaky little snack outings when they're supposed to be "dieting". Min Yun treats her like a little sister and is immensely protective and wants to make sure she smiles as much as possible.
— Groupmate/The Moon / Song Eunho / 23/24 / Min Yun loves being around Eunho, even if they're not doing anything but lounging around. She treats him much like a little brother, and will probably give him the world if he asked for it.
— Groupmate/The Boisterous / -- / -- / Min Yun appreciates his ability to lighten the mood of any situation, but has been known to reign him in when he gets to be "too much". She spoils the crap out of him and loves him to pieces. Another little brother.
— Groupmate/The Bashful / -- / -- / Min Yun is fiercely protective of her. She knows how the other doesn't like the extra attention and tries to steer uncomfortable topics away from her if she can. Min Yun treats her like a sister, and almost like her daughter in some ways. She knows the younger can most likely handle herself, but likes to be there to help in any case.
— Groupmate/The Prince / -- / -- / Though she's trying to respect his need to change his image into something more, Min Yun still thinks of him as her little prince. She still spoils him, but does it in more subtle ways so he doesn't feel like she's babying him. She's there for him when he needs her, but tries not to be as naggy and clingy and forcefully motherly.
— Groupmate/The Princess / Asuka Umeko / 18 / Min Yun absolutely adores Ume. She'd hand the maknae the universe on a plate if she were able. She spoils her the most and loves spending time with her. She's always there to lend an ear or a shoulder, and treats Umeko like the most precious sister.

Trainee years 2 years at DSP (2007-2009) ; 6 years at Moon (2012-present)
Trainee life Min Yun enjoyed her years as a trainee, even at DSP. She didn't make many friends and the ones she did make, she lost due to the whole event with her ex-vocal coach. She doesn't have many good memories tied to DSP anymore. When she came to Moon, she felt awkward at first, since she was just thrown into a line-up. She soon found her place within the other trainees and began to truly enjoy her path to idol life.
Pre-debut
— 2014 / composed a couple of commerical jingles on the piano
Scandals
— 2009 / Pregnant / Though it never reached public eye, it is in the database at DSP Media as reason for her departure from the company. Her ex vocal coach still works there completely blameless for the whole ordeal.
— (when convenient) / Seen with her daughter / She wasn't careful enough and got caught on one of her mommy-daughter dates with Ka Eun. Her sister-in-law wasn't there for it to make sense to use the niece excuse, so it's a little more difficult to cover up.
— (when convenient) / Dating fellow group member / They're seen out together looking rather close, closer than usual and it's seen as romantic. The company denies it at first, but no one really believes it and rumors spread. Response is mostly positive from fans, with some exceptions.
Comments I leave the love interest section up to you, honestly. She's demi-romantic/mostly aual, so it doesn't matter who. I'm also not sure if Min Yun would have introduced Ka Eun to the group at any point between 2012 and now, but it would seem like a strange thing to keep from people you think of as a second family. So I kind of leave that up to you as well, if she's chosen. I think it would make sense for them to know, but also would kind of fit Min Yun if they don't and would be an interesting thing to see.
