you ever meet someone who has so much of their life together, you're surprised they're even human? well, if not, then meet valerie lau. she juggles her double major in english and education while also managing her role as her chapter's academic chair. she's the friend, sister, classmate, you go to for advice because she somehow has the answer to everything? you're a business major? oh, don't worry, valerie may not know anything about the business school but she has a friend she talks to that does so she can refer you to him for advice. she's somehow always the center of attention, since she has this aura that draws people to her. she could tell people the sun orbits around the earth and some people may actually believe her just because it came from her lips. though valerie has issues handling her own emotions, and maybe it's the stress she pretends to not have building up inside of her that causes her mood to change so quickly all the time. she struggles with dealing with her feelings and managing anything that's not happiness or motivation to work harder. she thinks its largely influenced by the pressure to grow up "perfect". since she was little, she was always expected to excel in everything—academics, sports, social skills—if she was lacking in anything, her mother was on her immediately telling her to work harder. so valerie, ultimately, ends up working her hardest on every single aspect of her life. but because of that, she doesn’t have enough time to consider herself and her own feelings. she’s never really thought about her own feelings or emotions. rather, she considers them things that get in her way while trying to become that perfect human being she wants to become. because she pushes those emotions away until something causes her to snap. so when valerie cries, she sobs. and when valerie yells, she screams. most of the time she’s composed, but sometimes, even the smallest things not going her way might trigger these emotional responses. on really bad days, you can sometimes find her walking out of class with tears running down her cheeks while texting brendon to save her because she doesn’t even know why the hell she’s crying because the exam honestly wasn’t even that bad. even though she's the friend others go to for all sorts of help, valerie can barely help herself.

SOULMATE INFO
"when you first communicate with your soulmate, that emptiness in your heart will finally go away."
hearing her usually cold mother say something so uplifting made her expectations of her soulmate increase with each passing year. 17 year old valerie had many boyfriends, but not a single one of them could fill the strange hole in her heart. but when they held her close—yes when they hugged her and told her how much they loved her—she felt like she could pretend that she didn't still feel incomplete.
a few months after she turned 18, she locked eyes with a very tall and very attractive male at a paphi party. she thinks she remembers him from his probate that happened a week afters hers, but she’s too drunk to really be able to recall anything. so instead, she downs another shot that her psis hands her before making her way over to him. quite seductively, she trips over a wire and falls straight into his chest. he catches her, but they’re both too drunk to carry their own weights, and they end up falling back against the dirtied couch.
“hey.” she slurs and she can hear him laugh over the thumping bass in the paphi basement.
“hi.”
his voice is deeper than she expected. she pulls herself up to sit in his lap and he immediately presses his lips to hers. well—he presses his lips to her chin before he drunkenly is able to find her lips and engage in a very messy makeout session.
“valerie, get off that pineapple—we’re leaving!”
she whines as irene drags her off of the very tall and very attractive boy’s lap. she rips her arm from her grip to grab a sharpie from the cluttered coffee table. she holds her hand out for the stranger, and almost automatically, he places her wrist in her hold. in a few quick motions, she wrote her phone number down onto his tanned skin and tossed the pen to the side. irene is already dragging her away again, but she turns back and flashes the paphi brother a coy smile. ‘text me’ she mouths before she’s pulled out the front door.
ashton wakes up the next morning with smeared sharpie across his arm, and valerie is confused to find that she’s written her own number on her forearm. she’s even more confused when she realizes she can’t wash it off. still, she’s sure only she can read it, since it’s such a hot mess of swirls that it just looks like one long squiggly line.
“did i meet you last night?”
she waits for a response, her heart pounding loudly in her chest. and her jaw drops once she sees neat handwriting start to write itself right beneath her phone number.
“if u did, i don’t remember anything from last night so idk. i don’t even know wtf this chicken scratch on my arm is.”
she snickers and writes a short message back, the lingering migraine being pushed to the back of her mind to focus on the task at hand—learning more about her so-called other half. for once, she regrets drinking so much. maybe if she had been slightly more sober, she would've remembered her soulmate's face.

though it's not as serious as ucm's actual volleyball team, valerie would say that they're pretty damn good for girls who only play once or twice a week. she's been playing volleyball since she was a freshman in high school, so it was something she wanted to do when she entered college. despite it not being ucm's official team, they still do travel around california together for competitions with other rec teams.

valerie yelps when a hand comes down on her head quite heavily. ashton whines about being kept waiting for so long he came out. to find her, and she rolls her eyes. they head to the dining hall togther, and she shoves her planner back in her bag.

she hid herself in her dorm for hours prior to this, headphones in and forcing out an essay as fast as she could. though the due date isn't until next week, she wants to be prepared to proofread it when she finds the time. but now here she is, at ucm's rec center with her spandex shorts and kneepads on. she laces up her shoes and greets her teammates as they walk in for their flexible daily 7:30 practice. they wait for their captain to arrive before starting to warmup.

she's drying her wet hair while listening to vivian's laughter along with some dumb movie in the background. she hurried to her dorm right away after practice to shower (since who knows what happens in the ucm rec center's showers??) and now she's dressed in her pajamas and climbing into bed. she lays on her bed, first throwing a stuffed animal at vivian's head and listening to her surprised groan before she pulls her laptop into her lap to finish up any assignments. she's asleep by 12AM, usually spending the last hour before she rifts off watching youtube videos or playing pointless rpg games.

✨TL;DR : valerie hides the fact that they’re soulmates from ashton out of fear of what he might think of her. slowly, they become best friends and valerie nearly forgets about the whole soulmate thing because ashton and her have stopped communicating that way. however, she realizes he fell in love with her and she may also have loved him this entire time as well, and she panics because she feels like her lack of understanding in her own emotions will become a burden on him and their potential relationship. as a result, she pretends she can’t tell that he’s flirting with her. valerie’s brother then tells ashton the truth (they’re soulmates, valerie’s true feelings, all that jazz). valerie asks ashton to wait for her and he says he’ll wait for as long as he can. no matter what, though, he’ll stay by her side, whether it be as her best friend or her s.o. atm, they're still friends since neither of them want to be awkward with each other.
SCENE 1 : the (second) meeting
"remember that pineapple you were making out with last night?"
unfortunately, her drunk out of her mind self couldn’t remember anything at all. valerie shrugged and turned to give eliza a confused look. the girl sipping her boba pointed over to the tall male staring at her from across the campus quad.
valerie’s eyes met dark orbs, messy hair barely brushing over his lashes before he ran his fingers through black tresses, messing it up even further. he was walking towards them with another paphi brother by his side. valerie swore she was about to lose her mind. because if she remembered correctly—this tall, dark, and handsome man was supposed to be her soulmate.
“hey.”
. she spaced out, and now he was standing in front of her.
“…hi.”
this interaction seemed almost familiar, but she pushed that thought to the back of her brain where her hangover was.
“daniel told me we were basically ing each other on the couch last night.”
she almost choked on her tapioca. her sober self didn’t expect him to come on so strong. the unnamed handsome stranger laughed at her surprised expression.
“sorry. i drank a lot and didn’t get your name—i don’t usually do that. let me reintroduce myself. i’m ashton jung, and you?”
he held his hand out for her to shake, but valerie’s eyes fell upon the faint lines of sharpie that he tried to wash off—black marks that used to make up the digits of her cellphone number.
she forced a tight smile, pulled her hoodie sleeve further up her wrist, and slipped her hand into his.

SCENE 2 : the slow development
valerie thinks she romanticized the idea of a soulmate too much. because every time she’s forced to sit next to ashton at a greek event, she hates that her heart can’t stop beating so anxiously in her chest. she’s almost sure it’s not because he’s undeniably hot, because she’s definitely shared a bed with guys who were just as hot. it might be because of that cute smile, and that deep laugh, and—.
there are small exchanges between them, soulmate wise, like when valerie wrote down the phone number to the nearest fried chicken place in case she forgot to order it, she soon got a “oooh get me some too” written right beneath it. or small things like:

but real life ashton seems to have taken a liking to her. is this because soulmates are meant to be in each other’s lives for a reason? either way, he texts her almost daily now that he has her number. whether it be asking her to get lunch, or sending her a stupid meme, or asking her for academic help because he heard from daniel jeon ( that guy) that she was pretty smart despite how she acts at parties.
she’s starting to warm up to him, and she’s not sure whether or not she likes that idea. still, now when she sees a stupid meme she thinks of him and she’s sending him meaningless texts just to talk to him. he’s weaseling his way into her heart
maybe she doesn’t want him to know they’re connected by the stars because she’s scared. she’s heard the quiet murmurs of non-greek girls who don’t know her thinking she can’t hear them. she hears the shaming when people think her back is turned. and while she doesn’t care what strangers think of her, her soulmate is a different story.

SCENE 3 : the best friends
well he weaseled into her heart way too fast. now every single one of her friends and family members know that ashton jung is her best friend only after a semester of knowing each other. only her family knows that he’s her soulmate, and even then she almost made every single one of them take a blood oath to never tell anybody.
ashton is a hardcore ride or die best friend. he’s always willing to do whatever she asks, whether it be going out to eat at fire nation with just the two of them, or going to that music festival that’s a 3 hour drive off campus. he even does things without her asking, like buying her her favorite boba (mango) when she’s had a bad day, or taking her to a rooftop restaurant when she runs up to him crying about her exam scores.
and honestly, valerie, without realizing, has done similar things for him. she paid for his ticket to new york (using all of her lunar new year and birthday money and then some) when he said he wanted to go and see the city and visit her. once, she spent the night in his car when his girlfriend cheated on him, comforting him and making sure he was emotionally and mentally healthy.
she’s not sure what heroic deed she did in her previous life to deserve such a precious bean as ashton jung, but she thanks the stars every night. she stops communicating with him on her arm, mostly out of fear that he’d realize that she indeed is his soulmate, whether he deduct that his soulmate and his best friend’s personalities are oddly similar or whether he sees his writing and doodles directly on her arm. the less she communicated with him via arm, the better. and plus, and he hasn’t written anything to her in a long time, which she chalks up to him not believing in soulmates much. she slowly forgets that ashton was even her soulmate in the first place, and it’s only brought up again towards the end of their freshman year.
SCENE 4 : the one-sided affections
“i know it’s been forever since we last talked, but can you help me?”

valerie stares at the writing on her arm and laughs almost bitterly. she almost wants to run out of bendy straw to grab a hoodie to hide all this ink.
three weeks ago, ryan koo came up to her before a paphi and akdphi mixer and pulled her into an empty room to say--
“he’s in love with you, valerie.”
as if she didn’t know that. she’d have to be stupid or blind to not see ashton’s feelings for her. she knew him hugging her closer than usual and taking her out for lunch more often wasn’t an act of “friendship”, and him directly texting her “i love you” and surprising her after an akdphi philanthropy event with a large bouqet of flowers wasn’t just because he “felt like it”. hell, he even stopped her from flirting with a guy at a party just three days ago.
she wasn’t planning on doing anything about it. she thinks, honestly, that she likes him too, but she doesn’t want to burden him. she’s too hard to be in a relationship with. she’s a ticking time bomb of emotions and feelings just waiting to be released. she doesn’t know how to express herself, and she knows getting into a relationship with someone is the last thing she’d be able to do because ultimately, she’s not going to be able to communicate with her partner and she’s going to end up bottling up her feelings for someone else’s sake again. and when she explodes—well, she’s toxic in more ways than one.
more than anyone else, she doesn’t want ashton of all people to deal with that. not when he’s so dear to her heart. he doesn’t deserve that—he deserves better. and she feels like fate really ed him over by putting him with such a hot mess of a soulmate. but she pushed all those thoughts away and instead, shrugged her shoulders.
now, she’s holding a pen over her arm and hesitating to respond.
“maybe just give her time. it might be bc she’s not ready yet.”
“not ready?”
she looks up with wide eyes and meets the pained, dark eyes of her soulmate.

“brendon told me.”
she curses her nosy little brother and opens to respond.
“he told me you knew and you were hiding the fact that we’re soulmates. but that’s not even what i’m upset about. he told me you think you’re not good enough for me? that you’d hurt me?! i’m not—are you ing stupid?”
she flinches backwards and he looks like he wants to rip her out of her chair and shake some sense into her.
“you’re all i ing want and i fell in love with you without the entire soulmate thing. i'm really ing pissed off. how ing dense could you be??”
tears smear the ink on her arm, and she watches as the writing on his arm smudges as well.
“…give me time, ashton.” she chokes out.
there’s a pause, then he finally sighs and pulls out a chair at her empty table, sitting down across from her. “fine. i’ll keep doing this best friend thing until you get those feelings of yours sorted out. but don’t expect me to just push all my feelings aside for your benefit. i can’t hide them forever, valerie.”
she nods and lets him brush her hair out of her eyes and wipe the tears he caused away from her wet cheeks, all the while still calling her stupid under his breath. he’s not sure how long he’s going to have to wait for her, and he’s certainly not going to wait forever, but he’s going to stick by her side no matter what she decides. whether she tells him to leave his feelings for her behind, or embraces him with open arms, he’s going to be there for her. and for that, she’s more than grateful. and with that, she'll slowly open up her heart for him.
