the bare basics
FULL NAME Kang San
NICKNAMES
— King San: In one very confusing exchange between a foreign English teacher who couldn't speak Korean and San who can't speak English, the teacher mishead his name and asked "What, King San?" San loved it (as soon as he figured out what king meant) and has never really let it go. "My name is Kang San but you may call me King San."
BIRTHDAY & AGE Jun 7th 2001 (16)
ETHNICITY Korean
BIRTHPLACE & HOMETOWN Busan
LANGUAGES
— Korean

UAL ORIENTATION — Questioning
FACE CLAIM & BACKUP — Lee Daehwi + Park Minhyuk
APPEARANCE — 1.75m + 50kg
San is thin and slight in every part of his body. Thin arms, small ribs (seen poking through his skin), slim legs, etc. This is partly due to his genes and partly due to the idol diets. He's almost sickly thin, but with clothes over it it looks good, it looks perfect. That's what the manager says, at least.
STYLE — San likes what's trendy, though he doesn't like to admit it. He also really likes dressing fancy and looking sharp and wearing the kind of ostentatious outfits one would never get to wear in normal life. He adores the outfits he got to wear for his MV, that's exactly the outlandish fancy wear of beautifully tailored and patterned jackets  and shirts that he would die for.

IN DEPTH
PERSONALITY — San is a ball of confidence and charisma. He adores attention, many of his mannerisms and hobbies were created solely for the purpose of getting that attention. He loves spotlight, he loves being fawned over and adored, there's a reason he didn't take a single second to accept the audition for BBC. The spotlight is all he's ever wanted, and being a star of his school wasn't going to be enough. Being the star of Korea is a worthy follow up. He'll want to be the one talking, he'll want to be the one being addressed, he'll want to be the one with the lines and the killing point and you name it. He can be pushy and calculative in the way he gets that center of attention spot for sure, and who's to say he isn't good at talking and being friendly and personable and charismatic? But all of that attention and spotlight is all well and good but the restriction of being an idol are stifling in ways San had never anticipated. The constant controlling, the constant opholding of image, the constant same-ness of it all (another dance practice of the same dance, another waiting room where he gets to spend the next 12 hours doing nothing, another fansign where he gets asked the same questions all over again). San never anticipating that he might hate it more than he loves it.

The boy runs his mouth like no other. He's a gregarious one, able to keep talking and talking and talking until the breath in his lungs ran out. He has little filter though and just blurts out what he thinks of. He can be damned sassy and savage, which gets him many an adoring meme but might not go over so well with his actual group members. It doesn't help that he's very independent and self-absorbed and doesn't bond well with people in the first place, and the singular solo nature of the Nox releases only underlined that independence, once the group schedules start he won't know what to do with himself and the loss of that singular spotlight. San mostly knows shallow fair weather friends, he has trouble letting deeper friendships penetrate the layers of me me me. He can also be very insensitive and ignorant, San just doesn't know a lot of things about stuff like social justice or discrimination or other people's problems. He's a very priviledged Korean teenager raised in a conservative environment. He doesn't mean bad but there is definitely a bunch of internalized homophobia, racism, classism, you name it -ism and it's probably there.

San is generally friendly and fun, he's good with people and if he's in a good mood he'll be a delight to be around. Probably too chaotic and rebellious for any of the management or leaders to really appreciate, but for his peer he's a ball of energy always ready to cause some chaos, especially when he's bored, and he gets bored easily. Why are you asking him to practice the same dance for the 40th time today oh my god if he died today he could dance to the song in his grave leave him alone. He's very temperamental and his mood can go from good to dark in an instant. He's also extremely dramatic about everything whether he's in a good or bad mood and has a tendency to make things about him. He's a stubborn thing with a rebellious streak, he hates being told what to do and can be rather like a cat threatening to throw over a glass of water in response. San raises his paw."No!" you'll say. San looks you right in the eyes and throws the glass off the table. He's grudging when you get on his bad side, something that definitely combines with his dramatics into the worst possible shape. He never lets anything go. Ever. Will bring up this one small ty thing you did 2 years ago as if it was yesterday.

TL;DR —
(+) Confident, outspoken, charismatic, upbeat, sassy, fun, friendly
(–) Blunt, insensitive, stubborn, lazy, self-absorbed, ignorant, attention hog, temperamental, grudging, rebellious
(...) Independent, dramatic, sassy

BIOGRAPHY — San's upbringing is rather ordinary. He's a kid from Busan, raised on sea food and hardy people and beaches. His dad is a psychologist and his mother a stay at home mom and he doesn't have any siblings, in many ways his life was a cushy one of priviledge an ease. He went to school, had his fair share of bullying experience but learned to cope with it by present a front so confident nobody seemed to put a dent in it. Bullies lose interest when the results aren't immediately noticeable and San got to twerk and be dramatic to his delight. What's more, he found that he got a lot of attention for doing things like feminine dancing, twerking, and being overdramatic for laughs. It was love him or hate him. Some teachers loved him for being a fun and cheeky little thing, other teachers hated him for being disruptive and loud. Some classmates loved him for being funny and sassy while others hated him for being weird and rude. San was fine with that. If you hate something that means you care too, right? That's the kind of philosophy he told himself he adheered to anyway.

He actually auditioned a few times when he was younger, in his early teens, whenever auditions spilled over into Busan, but he was always told that his voice wasn't one they wanted to work with. He had to make do with school plays and musicals and talent shows and festivals to get any shred of spotlight he could get and you bet he entered every single one of all of those. He was shopping on the street when someone approached him on behalf of Blockberry Creative, he was being scouted! San didn't need any time to think on it, he just asked the guy when he could audition. And so starts the tale of Nova.

HABITS —
— He's always slipping back into his Busan accent by accident (or sometimes on purpose to 'punish' the manager) despite the months BBC spent on language coaches.
— He is always serving face even if the camera isn't on him, and sometimes serving face means eye rolls and pointed looks and silent savegery.
HOBBIES —
— The girl group dancer. It won't be good but it will be passionate. San learned early on that dancing to girl groups got him attention.
— Shopping, both physical and online. Yes, San is one of those idols who lists shopping as a hobby, but it's true he absolutely loves new things and pretty things and pretty new things.
LIKES —
— The anime Your Name (Kimi No Nawa): it's been a year now and he still talks about it
— Modelling
— His figure: people always comments on how nice and thin he is (as long as he doesn't wear a tanktop), San doesn't care that it's unhealthy and will starve himself as long as it takes to keep that figure.
— Bubblegum pop and most of the current popular groups.
— Haunted houses or scary movies: he takes a stubbor pride in not getting scared, though he has about a medium tolerance for scary stuff and will try to pretend to hold it together much better than he actually does.
— Any kind of stage will do, he's not picky. He loved playing Romeo in a school play as much as he liked shaking his booty booty on a school talent show.

DISLIKES —
— His voice: he used to get bullied by how soft and feminine and weird his voice is, and the few auditions he went to he never made it to the next round because of his voice. Even industry professionals don't really know what to do with it.
— Animals: he doesn't know how to handle them and gets nervous around them because they're unpredictable to him. He never had pets.
— Yellow being his color, it's such an awkward one and it's not his color at all. Is okay with it as long as it's being represented as gold, though.
— Reading: he doesn't have the attention span for it. Comics are okay because they have pictures.
— Alcohol: he's had a taste here and there but he doesn't really like it. He'll have a tough time of it once drinking culture catches up with him.
— Seoul: the big city doesn't care and San doesn't like it one bit. It makes him feel like a dime in a dozen instead of the unique amazing snowflake he is. He hopes that will change as soon as stardom finds him.

TRIVIA —
— He can't really speak any language other than Korean, not with any certainty, though he'll learn very very basics should he actually have noticeable foreign fans. English is the worst, it doesn't sound like anything he knows and he's really really bad at it.
— San isn't even really aware that there are other ualities than straight. I mean, he knows, sort of. He's aware that homouality exists an that abstract this'll never come up in my actual every day life kind of way. He could very well be gay, he's got many of the stereotypical mannerisms down, but he could also just be an overdramatic teenage dumb dumb who learned to embrace those parts of himself for maximum attention. Who's to say?
— He can't twerk but he thinks he can.
— He's not very smart, half because he's just not very smart and half because he never cared about being smart. There were so many more interesting things to do than pay attention in school. There still are.
— Would hate it if he ends up being the maknae.
— Is very good at aegyeo regardless.
— Loves being y and doing y concepts no matter how many "but he's only 16" comments surface from netizens.
— He's surprisingly ok with losing, after all most of the time losing is much funnier than winning and he's always ready to entertain.
RELATIONSHIPS
GROUP MEMBER ONCE THE GROUP ACTUALLY HAPPENS — Moon Hawon
— San really doesn't care for Hawon much. He's a stick in the mud who's often moody and averse to fun and San isn't about that. He's also often saying smart things or quoting literature or whatever and San is quite certain he's just doing it to make San feel dumb and he does not appreciate it. He's often rolling his eyes at him or silently mocking him behind his back when he's being boring. Plus the whole not blinking thing is super creepy what the hell. Ask San to imagine himself in a horror movie and meeting Hawon's unblinking stare in a dark hallway is probably it. He shudders at the thought.
the talent
TRAINING PERIOD — 8 months
TRAINEE LIFE — San has been a trainee for a very short time before he debuts. He'd done what he always does in new environments, be his own extra self and get people to love or hate him while he gave about a mediocre effort in training. Everything that's new has him put in all the effort he has to spare, as soon as it stops being new though San is out and off seeking every excuse he can get to not do it. Some of the staff might just be extremely frustrated at the scout who brought him in.

TALENT  Vocal
TALENT TWINS —
—  Cha Hakyeon
—  In Pyo
—  N/A

ELABORATION —
— Singing: San has a very odd voice, it's very soft and high pitched and femininine. He's had almost no training so he's just coasting on his natural talent, he's not very stable and has a very narrow range before he starts straining, but within that range it's a very pleasant sound. Very much a love it or hate it kind of tone, but still pleasant.

— Dancing: He's really not very good but he knows how to be eye catching anyway. He's not scared to make a complete fool out of himself for laughs, just like he knows that doing an eyecatching and slightly scandalous (see: feminine) cover to Beyonce will definitely mask how awkward those dance moves are. When in doubt just do it with 100% conviction and confidence and you'll fool enough people.

— Visuals: With monolids, a squarish jaw, and a fairly large face San isn't one of the visual line but he makes up for it with charisma and energy. He's fun to watch and loves the stage, visuals be damned! As he likes to put it, who would you end up rather seeing on stage? Dead eyed Hawon or the sparkling him? That's right, he thought so.

— Acting: he was the go-to male lead for school plays and musicals, we all know that kid who's always the star of the school stage, but that doesn't say all that much in the big picture since his school was anything but an arts school. He's pretty decent in any case, and will take any opportunity to act if he can get it.

THE noCTiverse

STAGE NAME — Nova (from supernova, brightness from self destruction)

COLOUR — Yellow (a color that is bright but also a warning)
ANIMAL — Fox
NAME OF DEBUT SONG — Cactus

THE MUSIC VIDEO —

I can spend a long time in the winter alone
By looking at the flower bloom on the longest spine

Nova wakes up in a luxurious and beautiful bedroom. He's dressed lavishly too (think: blood sweat and tears style) and he walks over to a balcony and throws the doors open revealing the pink and orange skies of Aether's eternal twilight. He basks in it. The next shot sees him walk around the empty mansion looking at statues and paintings. One painting that he walks past is the famous painting by Carlo Seracini of the Fall of Icarus but Nova takes no notice of it as he all but frolicks in the wealth of the place. There is a brief flash of a fox at the end of the hallway but Nova doesn't see, he's too busy twirling around the place in wonder. There's another shot of him outside in a field of sunflowers. Nova looks happy and in awe as he he lays down in the middle of the field surrounded by the bright yellow flowers and painted by the eternal twilight.

Interspersed are scenes of him dancing with backup dancers in an equally lavish outfit. The dance is very conceptual and almost sensual, leaning much on poses and vogue elements to make the most of Nova's confidence and natural charisma to mask his lack of real dance skill.

~

Will thorns pierce me when I meet you?
No matter how much you push me away
I’m not afraid because I have had enough

He waks up again in the exact same room, different but similar outfit. He opens the doors again and goes back out. This time he tries one door and it's locked, but the next door he can open. He goes into a room filled with cactuses of any kind. Huge ones in pots that almost reach the ceiling, smaller ones on the floor and on tables. He waters them diligently. Then he accidentally pricks himself on a cactus but instead of hurting him the needle just turns into a yellow flower. He's perplexed but happy, it seems like absolutely nothing can go wrong in this place! He becomes more bold and runs around throwing things over and dancing in the hallways, sliding from a staircase, rolling through the sunflower field. Everything is with abandon because he is untouchable.

~

I have been afraid to get hurt for a long time
In case the real me looks worse
No matter what I do, I can’t; what should I do?

He wakes up again but it's different this time. He gets up slower. He opens the balcony almost bored. Then he goes out and finds more and more of the doors locked. He's back in a room filled with cactuses He tries to prick himself again but instead another flower blooms. He tries and tries and tries until the cactuses are covered in flowers. He throws the them around in frustration. He sees the fox this time and follows it back to his bedroom but it disappears off the balcony before he can catch it. He's seen sitting in the sunflower field methodically pulling petal after petal from a sunflower in his lap, looking frustrated when the sunflower somehow remains whole. He runs towards the gate of the garden and it's closed, he can't leave the safety of the castle and the sunflower field. He can't go anywhere the castle doesn't want him to go.

~

I can’t end this so I swallow myself
I can’t say goodbye to you

He wakes up for the fourth time and his frustration is all over his face. He doesn't even open the balcony doors, he goes straight through the hallway where he throws over sculptures and vases but they always remain intact. He goes back to the cactus room and throws them all over but with every touch more flowers bloom until the whole room is filled with flying petals. And then it happens: he pricks himself. He stares at his finger with wonder and a grin spreads on his face.

He runs out excitedly and his eyes actually find the painting of Icarus and for the first time the camera really focuses on it. He slowly approaches it, looking in awe at the painting. Then he turns around and he runs back to his room where he sees the fox sitting beside the balcony doors. He throws open the doors and leans over the railing of the balcony and looks down. There, at the bottom, is what looks like a dark bottomless chasm. Nova grins at the sight of it. He tries it out first. Sits on the edge of the balcony, takes off his fancy embroidered jacket, and lets it fall down into the chasm. Then he stands onto the railing and spreads out his arms and finally lets himself fall down from the balcony into the chasm, a smile on his face as he does it.

Around him the landscape changes as he falls from the peach of Aether to the blue sky to darkness. He lands on the ground on his back and rolls from the impact but he's still grinning. He comes to a stop on his back, lets his hands fall to the side, and just laughs happily. A fox comes from the darkness and his hand.

SYMBOLISM —
Overarching theme: San has this big fancy castle, he's debuted and he's got the world at his fingertips. At first he's happy exploring the rooms and basking in that sense of success and fame. I put him in Aether to underline that fact that this should be all that, this should be all that he should want. Aether is the realm of the gods right? It's heaven. It's perfection. But it's all empty and San feels so so alone and the solo nature of the Nox releases only adds to that feeling of isolation. Yes there are many other boys in the group, but how long does it take for any of them to actually do something real together? Until then San is on his own, or so it feels. Until the he can only rely on himself and he's so lonely but he also learns to function like that.

So he's alone in this big fancy mansion and everything is perfect and nothing can hurt him and San is going insane. Every day is the same thing, it's all controlled by others and similar and no matter how great something is if you get the same thing over and over and over it's going to get boring. It's like they clipped his wings with promises of success and put him in this cage to dance like a puppet for the audience and he does it over and over again and he's going insane. He needs to feel something real, something of his own accord, but every time he tries to prick himself nothing happens. He becomes obsessed with feeling something of his own accord, doing something of his own accord, and it's represented by this fissure into the world. An imperfection that lures San to it. He doesn't know what it is, he doesn't know what it will bring, but he knows that whatever it gives it'll be his own choice and it'll be change. And so San takes the leap into the unknown.

— Cactuses: The cactuses can symbolize either the fans/netizens or the company. Either way despite the fact that he accidentally went to prick himself, the spike just turned into a flower and he was unharmed. He can't do anything wrong even when he messes up, it's almost like nothing is able to harm him. It's all a symbol for how his youth and his fans and the company protect him. "Oppa didn't mean it" might be true, for the most part, but that does't mean it's not a tightly woven safety net and San being the overconfident teenager he is it goes to his head a bit. No matter how many times he tries to prick himself, all that comes out of it is a soft flower... until it doesn't.

— Icarus: Both obvious and slightly subverted. Yes San is the one who flies too close to the sun in his hubris and falls, but he also takes the concious decision to fall himself as the one thing he has cotrol over.

— Sunflowers: At face value the sunflowers a reference to him: they're bright suns, just like Nova is. They also symbolize adoration and longevity and he rolls around in it, rolls around in the attention and fans. Much like the cactuses, even when he tries to pluck the petals of the sunflowers nothing ever happens. He plucks and plucks and plucks but the sunflowers keep their yellow halo. Nothing he can do can stop the idol train he's on, he can't get rid of the attention and the adoration he loved so much before.

— Fox: The fox as an animal is often seen a trickster, a mischievous and rebellious thing that doesn't conform to norms. It's also something people want as pets but that is extremely unsuitable as one. Foxes to terribly in captivity, they're destructive and noisy and don't listen. Those are all things they definitely have in common with San.

THE FINALE
QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS? — Wow I'm so glad I got this done in time! I'm really excited about this, the concept is really cool and unique and I hope you like San! I hope the MV isn't too long for you.
SCENE SUGGESTIONS — Give us lots of interactions between the guys and explore the interesting nature of having them all off solo before getting them together (or in subs? Are you doing subunits?). Also just San being a dramatic little :D
PASSWORD — I'm not really sure what my name means but I think it has something to do with being a star? In which case damned right I'm a star. I loved my outfits in the MV they were all gorgeous and velvet is so soft the director had to order me to stop rubbing my sleeves. It was kind of gross rolling in the field though there were a lot of bugs... not that that bothered me or anything! But there were. And it was kind of scary working with the fox, have you seen their teeth?! The MV is cool though, it's all rebellious and stuff and I love that! I did prick myself on so many cactuses though that was horrible. I never want to see another cactus again I swear they were specifically out to get me!
