the facts.

name — Heo Jaeok

nickname(s) — (Jaeok hates most nicknames, even his stage name. Use at your own discretion)
- Gramps - referring to his rather "grumpy" persona outside of idol life and towards a good number of his groupmates. Basically, they call him this because they say he acts like an old man.
- Oki - if there's anyone he actually is on good terms with and likes, they can get away with this endearment of "Oki" plus any other modifiers like "hyung" or "oppa"with only a small grumble of disapproval. Only his step-mom who uses "Oki-chan" gets away with this with no rammifications.

birthday & age — June 7, 1996.

birthplace & hometown — Jeju-do, South Korean

ethnicity — Korean

language(s) —
- Korean (Seoul dialect) // fluent - his most used language and a native.
- Jeju language // fluent - growing up in Jeju, he along with his family all speak this together and while on the island when mainland korean isn't required.
- Japanese // intermediate - the woman he calls mother is japanese, so he also learned to converse with her regularly. He can read and write a bit, but not well.

face claim  — Yeo One - Pentagon (Hyungwon - MonstaX)
appearance — Jaeok has been told since he was young he has a very pleasant face with handsome features. Some even just flat out call him pretty (which he dislikes). He is near sighted, and while the company has tried to get him to have surgery to correct his vision, he has refused. He was always something of a gangly kid, so Jaeok tries to maintain a strong physique through diet and working out. While he may not have the broadest frame, he is surprisingly strong. As a note, his features are 100 percent natural. He looks like his mom for the most part. If anyone had one complaint about his face, is that his nose looks a little low set by ideal standards.

If the stylists aren't fussing with his hair and fashion, Jaeok chooses to wear simple shirts and jeans. He ditches the contacts, and walks around in his glasses. He likes to also wear hats where he can bring the brim low on his face. It's a nice way to go out and not have people recognize him instantly. Really, the stylists would love if he wore more tailored clothing, but he just gets irritated and snippy with them when they try to force him in more 'fashionable' things. They have at least convinced him to wear collared or better fitting shirts at this point. At least his shoes are usually good quality.

the man.

traits — Sensible, Honest, Fiery, Prickly, Charismatic, Considerate, Inhibited, Private.

personality —  Jaeok has always been a steady, practical sort. If something doesn't make sense, then it simply doesn't make sense: no need to get upset by it, just work around it, and keep moving. Situational problems do little to deter him as he will address them step by step, with reason, and over come them. The same can be said for most clutter in his life: if he doesn't have a use for it, get rid of it. He's accustomed to being a voice of reason in a hectic household. A man of his word, if Jaeok commits to a task, he will see it through ot the end, and communicate honestly the outcome. Need an unbiased opinon? Jaeok has no issue providing insight into an issue or situation. His honesty is clear, and crisp, but lacks any maliciousness or annoyance when not provoked. He is possibly one of the best people to ask something of for this reason.

But when you get beyond non-people situations, his more heated personality emerges. While he strives to be calm and collected, the moment someone does someone completely counter to what his sensibilities tell him, Jaeok feels like that person is insane. And it can really rile him up to the point that he often loses his more sensible side. Coupled with his honesty, it it's not uncommon to see Jaeok flat out tell someone to just go away and leave him alone. Quite frankly Jaeok loses his temper far too easily when dealing with people. While it's rare to see him ever start shouting or raising his voice, others know he can be quite a grump when peturbed. For example: ask him the same question one too many times, and he will ask if you are genuinely confused or just being an . If he feels he's been personally offended, Jaeok will grumble under his breath, and  mutter about people these days. This has earned him the image of being a grumpy old man at times that others like to poke fun of the otherwise very visual young man. This usually ends with him proclaiming he hates everyone, and then resuming his work. Fortunately, the more sensible part of his personality is quick to step in, and despite his anger, Jaeok rarely stays mad for long, and ever rarer holds long grudges.

Those folks he grows fond of, however, will find Jaeok very aware of their needs. Despite his grumpiness, he will never just abandon a friend or member if they are in genuine need. Fans also find him very attentive at fanmeets, often telling them to not stay too late, get home safely, etc. He's the sort of person, despite what you do to upset him, he will ensure your well being is addressed. Some of the members he's not exactly fond of will get the same consideration...just more begrudgingly. Long story short: even if he absolutely hates you, Jaeok will do right by you.

The general populace,  will find some who smiles easily during interactions, and at ease with strangers. He has always been, despite his more short tempered persona, able to easily navigate a social situation. He's able to respond articulately, and can read a situation well enough to keep his temper in check when needed. Jaeok is well aware he's attractive. There's no arrogance associated with this: it's fact. And Jaeok uses this to his advantage when dealing with others.

However, Jaeok often finds himself constantly keeping himself in check. He wants to be loud, fiery, passionate, angry, everything that his sensible brain tells him not to do. But he has been told for so long to keep a good image at all times. He holds back a lot. He acknowledges despite being a great dancer, his success is based in part on his looks and outward persona as well. Best way to get under his skin is to point this out because he secretly knows this is probably true, and can't make a snappy comeback about it. And clearly  he holds himself back way too much in the public sphere due to the image he should be a 'pretty face'. Even among his groupmates, who KNOW he gets irritated at them and snaps a bit, he always just stops short of giving them a verbal what for, and internalizes the rest. The fact that he just KNOWS why he's successful makes him feel he can't be any other way. It's going to be a scary day when Jaeok finally unleashes everything he's been keeping in his head.

He prefers others stay out of his personal affairs, thank you very much. Those affairs have no business in his professional life, so don't bring them up. It is a difficult thing to get Jaeok to discuss his family as he wants to keep them away from scrutiny they might receive. He's worked hard for you to see what the company wants and what he wants: you don't need to know everything else about him just to satisfy your curiosity.

likes

- Almost all soda. It's his guilty pleasure.
- Being able to discuss critcally any dance or the techniques. He feels like he can't do this as often anymore since debuting and not being in university.
- The Ocean - it reminds him of home.

- The Stage - he's happiest performing before anything else. He is always notably happier right before a live performance and right after.
- Alone time to just listen to music without thinking about anything. Sometimes, he needs some time alone with his headphones to just not think for a while.

dislikes

- Anything with the eyes...makes him queasy. Putting eye makeup on him is a feat.
- Coffee - he never developed a taste for it.
- Strawberries - see allergies below.

- Being called pretty. If you're going to comment on his looks, at least call him handsome. And for heaven sake, at least make an attempt to comment on something else about him besides just his looks if you can. Acceptable: "Oppa, you look so cool on stage!" Not acceptable: "Oppa is so pretty!" *insert buzzer noise* NO. BAD.
- Lateness - its just a pet peeve of his. If a member runs late to a schedule or practice, it drives him nuts.

funfacts —
- He actually wears glasses and is quite near sighted. He dislikes contacts, so unless he's on stage or at an event, he's sporting frames.
- He's actually terrible at flirting. His past girlfriends have all been the ones asking him out, so he's never really...had to flirt?
- Jaeok is a strong and avid swimmer. He second home is somewhere in a abody of water.
- He's allergic to strawberries, and has had to go to the hospital once as a child after eating a carton full of them.
- Jaeok has a genuine fear of injuring himself and not being able to dance anymore.
- When asked why he refused to get any plastic surgery work done, he responded he didn't want to mess with anything his departed mother might have given him. He's not against it: it's just not for him.

- Jaeok also strongly favors his biological mother in looks. Everyone else looks like his dad. Thus he sticks out a little in family pictures and others often think "one of these things is not like that others..."

- He's a constant mutterer, even when not annoyed or angry. It's just his habit to work things out aloud.
- If someone does something stupid, he gives them the 'over the glasses look' of disapproval. Even without his glasses on, it appears. A meme was later created in the kpop community about "Manim is judging you." captioning the screenshots when this look appears.
- He keeps his space clean and neat mostly to keep others from feeling the urge to dig through his stuff.
- But his bed is constantly messy. It's just a weird quirk of his.
- He also secretly likes Overwatch. And is ashamed to admit he likes using Hanzo.SHHT! Don't tell anyone!

the story.

background — As far as Jaeok is aware, his mother passed away when he was three years old. His father tells him she became very sick and passed away (Jaeok has deduced it was cancer), but before that was a working model who retired to care for her family after settling down with him. His father owns a hotel in Jeju, and met his step-mother when Jaeok was six. Jaeok was raised in a household where his siblings were often fighting and disrespecting their respective step-parent. Daehee and Jihae (his biological sisters) were always critical of their Japanese step-mother, and in turn Taka (his step-brother) often insulted his step-father. Being young and only knowing his step-mother as a kind woman, Jaeok often played peace maker and was a bridge between his family members.

For fun, he was enrolled in a dance class by his step-mother just to see what he would do within their first year of knowing each other. To his family's surprise, the young Jaeok immediately took a liking to it and asked to go to more. This started a lifelong love of dance. He was head of his school's dance clubs, often mimicked choreography he saw, and was enrolled in just about any dance seminar, class, or training even if it was off the island during the summers. He didn't scoff even at traditinal or ballet: they were part of the art he truly loved. Truly, Jaeok has always been surrounded by supportive people. He decided he wanted to either be a choreographer or instructor at university, one day possibly opening his own studio. True, he'd been approached by others when he was younger about modelling or acting due to his looks, but he never wanted that and declined.

Fast forward to 2011. Jaeok, along with his sisters, are in Seoul exploring during a family trip visiting grandparents. While walking the street with them, he is approached by a rep from Park Studios. He is pointing out that Jaeok should really consider joining his company, and become an idol. With his looks, he would surely be popular. Jaeok at first politely declined, but his sisters were quick to take the rep's card. Later at home, his family would convince him to at least go tryout because wouldn;t it be so amazing if he became an idol? And they convinced him this was too good of an opportunity to pass up. They were honestly more excited by the idea of him being an idol than he was. However, he was finally convinced that at the very least, he could get more training and experience doing this to further his own dreams in the end. So, Jaeok joined P.S.

CONNECTIONS —

The Ok Family | The Fam Bam back on the island | Lumping his entire family here, including his Japanese step family. Papa Ok (Sungmin), Mama Ok (Tanaka Yuzu), older sisters (Jihae - 93, Daehee - 92), and step bro (Taka - 94). The older children all bicker over silly things, Sungmin is absent minded but endearing, and Yuzu is kind and warm. Jaeok is very close to Yuzu and calls her mother. Jaeok speaks to them regularly, and they will always make attempts to see him when he performs. But have recently been uneasy with the current state of SURGE and worry over Jaeok.

▪ Lee Seungwon | Best friend outside of Surge and backup dancer working for P.S. | Blunt, Easy-Going, Carefree, Driven, a little too much like an overly happy terrier at times though | Having met while both were training together, Seungwon dropped out of being an idol shortly before the debut of SURGE. Truthfully, he would have been a great addition to Surge, and orguably if he was there Jaeok would probably not be pulling his hair out right now, but idol life was not what he wanted and he chose to be a backup dancer instead, and is planning on opening his own studio one day. Jaeok and him work very closely with each other when they can, and have a strong, unshakeable bond. Truthfully, Jaeok would love it if he could drop the idol business to open a studio with Seungwon.

love INTEREST —

▪ There is a makeup noona who works with Surge regularly he has his eye on: Kim Yujin (25). She is a bit of an airhead, and ambivalent to most things around her. But she is very good at being Surge's makeup noona, plus she is really good at putting order to the shenanigans of the boys when she;s with them. When Yujin tells you to sit your down and hold still, you better do it. And despite her carefree spirit, she does see the world in a way that sort of makes sense: in what world should you keep doing something that makes you miserable? She has somehow become Jaeok's confidant and cheers him up or breaks him out of his slumps if he;s just a little too cranky. Right now, she is a bright spot for Jaeok. And depending on how things turn out, he might consider taking things further with her. (if you decide to include her: I think it would be hilariously terrible if she was assigned to the opposing group)

(*Also! Feel free to disregard this and play matchmaker if you like, or not include any love interest at all! Whatever works best with the flow of the story~)

the idol.

position — Dancer, Vocalist (reluctantvisualahem)

singing twin  — Hoya (Ukwon).

rapping twin —  NOPE
dancing twin —  Hoya (Feeldog).

trainee history —  By the time Jaeok joined P.S., he was already an accomplished dancer. Much of his trainee years were dedicated to his learning to dance with the group and developing his vocal talents. He also, once able to, worked out going to university at Korean National University of Arts. Outwardly, he seemed to be doing well if not becoming a little exhausted.

Initially with the other guys, before things came to a head, Jaeok was someone they could rely on to an extent. But over time, he just...got tired of their nonsense. He sees himself out of the petty fights only to find himself dragged back into them, and having to try and shut it down before finding himself becoming just as angry and fighting back despite himself. The guys knew Jaeok never picked a fight: but let it be known Jaeok will finish it if he has to.

solo work —  NA - if Jaeok has free time, he's practicing or working with trainees in P.S. He has done some ads and model work including doing a runway walk or two, but it's nothing of note towards his idol career.

confidences —  Dance and actually feeling dance. You can tell Jaeok is confident in his body and how it moves; he's the type to dance all the way out to his fingertips. He also knows he can work the crowd and fans by smiling at them, so he has some confidence in his looks and physical attractiveness in general.

insecurities —  The obvious answer will be "singing, clearly" if you ask him directly. And his vocals aren't horrible in this time of his career. Just not on parr with a main vocal per se.

But the real answer, if Jaeok was being honest with you, is him realizing idol life is not what he may want anymore. He regrets listening to his family those years ago and joining P.S. He can act like a good idol guest on variety and interviews, but a lot of that is a fake persona. He's really afraid of the world finding out how he really is and not accepting it. So while he doesn't want idol life per se anymore, he also is scared what it might mean to lose it. What if all he really is, is a pretty dancer?

you're in a 13 member group. has this ever bothered you? — "I think it was a rather dumb move, don't you think?" Jaeok says plainly, resting his cheek in his hand as he looks to the person who asked the question, "you put a lot of young guys together, and expect it to go swimmingly? Ha, riiiiight. Sure, it was kind of fun at first. Like having a bunch of schoolmates together. That didn't last long though."

do you think yourself better or worse than the other members that share your position? — "...have you actually seen the others?" Again, another plain answer. Jaeok says this so matter of factly. It's hard to tell if there is any malice or ill intent with the comment. And it's clear he isn't going to elaborate further.

did you involve yourself in any physical altercations? — "I let those idiots beat themselves into silence. Gives me a break from them."

in group arguments, do you prefer to speak your mind or stay quiet? — "I prefer they just leave me the hell alone so I can get an extra bit of sleep in. Their opinions don't matter to me unless they're messing with my choreography. Then they need to shut the hell up and listen to the experts. Otherwise, headphones on, eyes closed, sleep time on."

you have a chance to start over somewhat in this new unit group. what changes will you make to yourself, if any? — Jaeok opens his mouth as if to answer...but stops himself and only answers with a shrug. Because the truth is: he's rather not be in the new unit. But silence is not an answer, is it? "I suppose I'd be more active in...controlling the chaos." Scoff.

the end.

comments/suggestions — Oh lord...here you go. I dont know if this fits well but I wanted a character who doesn't see this new unit thing as a opportunity: just a means of prolonging his suffering. He is that old soul who has to live with this silly idol life decision. And who hates that people think he's pretty.

And yes...his stage name is Minam backwards because whoever thought of it wasn't being subtle.

scene request — My only request is an awesome story with good char development. X3

... I lied. I would like to See Jaeok actually become good friends with some of the other guys. If that can ever happen. XD
