☆ BACHELORS' PARADISE 2 - SUMMER YANG

the basics.

name » Summer Yang

nickname(s) »

Yeo reum - Since her English name is Summer, the kids at the school where she taught used to call her Yeoreum, which caught on in the rest of the village. Ever since, it's been something of a nickname for her.

Sum - a shortening of her name that she likes to use for puns.

birthplace & birthday » Lincoln, Oregon on 15 Oct 1992

hometown » Seoul, SK

ethnicity » Han Chinese

NATioNALITY » Taiwanese-American

occupation » English teacher turned vlogger and still riding the high of it all.

face claim » Amber Liu

backup face claim » Zhang Jiale

appearance » With her short cropped hair, natural makeup (at most), and boyish style, Summer is a tomboy through and through. She's only 1.63cm tall but makes up for it in presence and sheer loudness, good luck forgetting Summer is there, she won't let you off the hook so easily.

She always has this casual look about her, even when she's in fancy wear, like at any point she could shake out her hair, push up her sleeves, grin, and suggest they should go skateboarding in the park instead. A crazy grin and wiggled eyebrows are never far from Summer, she's always ready with some new crazy and daring plan of fun, good luck trying to stop her.

She has a big sleeve tattoo on her right arm that she got right when she quit teaching (since a school would never accept a teacher with such an obvious tattoo). She has a few smallers ones dotted around her body as well.

style » True to her tomboy look, Summer dresses in a traditionally masculine manner (though she doesn't like it being referred too as 'like a boy'). She hasn't worn a skirt or dress since she was forced to wear one for her holy communion, and she doesn't intend to start now. She always wears pants and shirts and sweaters, maybe a fancy blouse for fancy occasions if she has to. It's what she feels most comfortable in.

Her jeans are worn (and not the fashionable kind), her shirts are casual and sometimes crumpled, her makeup is minimal, and her earrings are simple black studs. She's learned to dress fancy for special occassions, but outside of those it's the same old style for her.

" I'm Summer and welcome back to The Sum Of It's Parts!"

" That about Sums it up! "

I AM READY FOR LOVE.

traits »

Funny, gregarious, optimistic, adventurous, hardworking, brave, confident

vs.

inconsiderate, brash, crude, mischievous, loud, impulsive

personality »

Summer is a loud and boisterous sort. She's the kind of person who is here to take everything life has to offer and who jumps on any opportunity to see and expeerience new things. She's the first one to volunteer when anything needs to be done, whether it he something crazy like skydiving or something mundane like the cleaning of the kitchen. She's a hard worker and very no nonsense person who's always up for some fun or hard work and always keeps a good cheer going.

Summer is outgoing on every fiber of her body. She's loud and fun and always a few second away from throwing her arms around you and suggesting another crazy scheme. She makes friends everywhere she goes and likes to include people where she goes, sometimes a little against their will. Her impulsivity lends itself well to antics and crazy stories (stories she'll tell at the slightest provocation, making grand gestures and grander statements as if she's sitting at at camp fire with a flashlight aimed at her face), but at little less well to foresight and planning. How useful is it that she volunteers first to do the cleaning if she ends up cleaning the floor first and then the counters not realizing that all the mess that had been on the counter fell on the floor and they need to be cleaned again? Ah well, as frustrating as that might be, she at least ensures that whoever is with her won't have at boring time. Her boisterous and loud nature that captivates her vlog audience is something she carries with her wherever she goes, and it can be hard to resist that relentless optimism and hyena laugh.

She can be a bit much for people who aren't used to dealing with an explosion of a human being. She always fills a room with her personality and doesn't always take no for an answer. A bit simple too, what you see is what you get when it comes to Summer. Despite that, she can be a surprisingly good listener. She's someone who cares about everyone, even if you were an absolute to her, if you need her then she's there for you. Just don't expect pretty lies or saving face, when Summer sits down for an real talk you bet your the talk will be real. She doesn't like to lie, for better or for worse, something that has gotten her in trouble more than a few times, especially in Korea. It doesn't help that Summer is allergic to bullcrap. She hates it when people are duplicitous or when they are insincere. Don't pretend your nice and then turn around and become a jerk, that's the kind of stuff that really makes Summer angry! And when she's angry she gets honest too. Summer doesn't get angry easily, but when she does get readyf or some real talk as she dishes out what she really thinks. Still, she doesn't like to hold grudges, and she's always willing to listen to you if you've had a change of heart, but only if you've had a change of heart. If you go on to show the same rude behaviour then she won't put up with you.

She's aware that her brash personality and honesty aren't exactly what Korea looks for in their women, but it's something she's not able to compromise on. This elephant in a china shop is who she is and she won't change that. Loud, weird, tomboyish and proud. That's Summer Yang.

background »

Summer had a pretty ordinary childhood. She lived in a decent enough town in Oregon, USA, youngest kid to two first generation Taiwanese-Americans with a big brother and a bigger sister already overachieving under their parents' watchful pressure. She was always different, the pressure for excellence didn't actually work on her as well as it did on her sisters, Summer was content to coast through high school on Bs instead of As, preferring socialization over long days of study and cram school at the Chinese Cultural Center. To top that all off she developed a tomboy style of presenting herself that irked her parents to hell and back. Summer nagged her brother for his hand-me-downs instead of accepting her sister's, she asked for short haircuts and avoided dresses and heels like the plague. She was set up to disappoint her family from the very get-go, so what was a major in media studies going to add to that? She was told she'd have to finance it herself if she wanted to do such an unprestigious major and Summer said okay, smell you later!

That was all well and good, but nothing prepared her for the hell of student loans that loomed over her, and media studies didn't exactly prepare her for recently crashed job market (not when you'd goofed off as much as Summer had). She needed a plan B. That plan B came from the various adverts for teaching English in Korea. The job was quite well-paid and moving to a whole new country was the adventure Summer craved! She didn't know how quickly to sign up.

So she packed her bags and travelled to Korea, knowing next to nothing about the culture or the language, and started teaching English in a town close to Daegu. It was totally different from anything she'd ever experienced but she loved it! She really started to immerse herself in the language and she loved working with the kids. About half a year in she figured, why not make use of her media studies background and start a vlog to talk about her experience in Korea? Interest in the country was at an alltime high and, to her surprise, the vlog really took off! People liked her brand of goofy humor and her adventurous spirit as she explored all the reaches she could find. Show off the skater culture in Daegu? Do some hiking through the country side? Explore this tiny village that still seemed stuck in the past? Check out abandoned buildings near Seoul? Summer explored the reaches of Korea that not many other people did. Sure, she covered the food and the city life and did Q&A's about her teaching experience, but she also explored every unexplored nook and cranny of the country and her viewers loved it. Paired with her sense of humor and her love for kpop leading to funny skits and impressions (and netting her the majority of her followers) and she became a force to be reckoned with in the online waters.

The vlog really took off two year ago when one kpop-related skit went viral and suddenly her views were in the millions and people started recognizing her on the street. It was crazy! After some lengthy deliberation she decided to quit her teaching job and start her own studio producing videos and selling merchandize full-time. After a succesful crowdfunding campaign for a small studio in Seoul, Summer was living the life she'd never even thought to dream of! She had two whole employees, a boy named Donggeun to help her with the editing of videos and a girl named Seungwan to help write and sometimes appear on camera with her, as well as a bunch of friends who help with skits and the like and the whole thing took off. She even got to appear as a guest on Dream Team and Hello Councellor once! It was crazy!

The decision to go on BP was an impulsive one, as much of her decisions are. Her youtube channel has been doing fairly well, but interest is waning two years after her viral video and she lost a bunch of viewers when BTS fans got offended at one of her skits. Things aren't as stable as they used to be and Summer knows she has to do something to stay relevant and keep her name out there. She also wants to get her foot in the door in the actual entertainment industry, she loved doing those variety appearances but she's more known internationally and in Korea not many people care about her aside from 'the foreign youtuber that's helping the Hallyu wave' (as she was introduced as during the shows, both of them foreigner editions to rub that in more). She's hoping that if she features on the show then she might be able to get that foot in the door, as long as she can refrain from totally ruining her image, of course.

likes »

a hopeless romantic » Summer loves kdrama and the whole fairytale romance Korea loves so much. You better believe she watched the first season of Bachelor's Paradise as well and loved it. Not unconditionally, there were some parts she wasn't too fond of (mostly the lying of the bachelors and some things that didn't quite seem fair to her), but as a whole she loved the experience.

hi hungry i'm summer » Dad joke alert. Summer has terrible sense of humor. She gets weirdly excited when she manages to pun in Korean, it shows how well she's learned the language! She makes puns with her own name whenever is able.

the way to a woman's heart » She loves food so much. Any food. Please feed her. It's a good thing she does so much physical exersize.

a child at heart » She loves kids and it broke her heart when she stopped teaching English. She never knew she liked kids so much until she was put in a class with middle school children, but they're amazing and so silly and dumb and she loves them. The fact that she's definitely a child at heart made things easier too. She's great at relating to them and being just as silly back and generally just is great with kids.

creepy crawlies » Summer loves insects and snakes and basically everything that generally has people squeamish. She loves how interesting they are and how wacky they look and she definitely loves how everyone screams when she picks one up and shows them. She's a bit of a child.

she was a skatergirl » Summer loves skateboarding, it was one of the things her parents used to disapprove most of.

dislikes »

no i won't go back to my own country» Summer has had to deal with her fair share of xenophobia and ism in Korea. She tries to deal with it as considerate as she can, she knows she's trespassing in a different culture, but it can be so frustrating sometimes.

not another crime show » She hates crimes shows with a passion.

*sound of a foot tapping* » Summer is not good with standing still, she always has to be doing something to keep busy. Thankfully there is always something to be done with her vlog, but she's seriously bad with restlessness.

are you a chimney or a human? » Summer hates cigarettes. It's unhealthy and you drag other people down just by being in the vicinity. She won't hold it against a smoker unless the smoker is inconsiderate about it, though.

you can dress someone else up like a princess, not her » Look, Summer has no qualms about feminine dress, just not on herself. Not even for the rose ceremonies will she put on a dress, it's simply not going to happen.

strong points»

comedy queen » Summer is funny, that's what she makes her living with nowadays. She's naturally a very social and charismatic person who can lighten any mood with a well-placed quip, be it self-depreciating or otherwise. She's queen of making fun of herself to ease others into liking her and is generally very well-versed in front of the camera. She's been in front of one every day for years, she knows what to do.

give me a challenge » Summer tackles everything in her path with the same big goofy smile and optimistic attitude. She just rolls up her sleeves, claps her hands together, and gets to work. Whatever she's asked to do, she does her very best to get it done and always keeps her good cheer. In fact, give her any new experience and she'll be a happy girl! She loves new things!

sunshine on a cloudy day » Summer is generally a person of relentless optimism which, combined with her sleeves-uprolling and to-work-getting attitude to challenges or any other kind of hardship in life makes her an excellent person to have around whenever anything goes south. She's responsible but keeps a positive outlook and tries not to let the world get her down. If life gives her lemons, she finds a way to plant that lemon and sprout more trees so she could have lemonade for days.

do you even lift? » She sure does! Summer loves being active, she's been doing a lot of strength training at the gym and loooves that feeling of working out and getting stronger. Her goal is Korra arms. She's also very active in general, and has participated in those crazy Spartan survival courses and their like both in the States and Korea (she died a little the first time).

content creation boss » If anyone ever needs a video edited, a script written, or any kind of media or vlogging performed, Summer is your woman. She's very creative and has the skill both for blog writing and vlog creation down to an artform.

was that a laugh or is there a hyena in the room? » Summer has a ridiculous hyena laugh, everything she does is loud. She counts it a strong point, make of that as you will.

time for some real talk » While Summer is mostly an adventurous and fun and loud little thing, she also has a thoughtful side. She's not the most intelligent, but she likes to be thoughtful of things and people's feelings and she's always ready to have a thoughtful conversation about it. Summer is excellent at prividing comfort or a real talk whenever necessary.

mental age: 8 year old boy » Good luck trying to gross Summer out, it's impossible.

weak points»

foreign waters, my dear » Summer is very much a foreigner, and one who had zero idea of Korean culture before setting off to make her fortune there. She's been in Korea for 4 years now, so she knows most of the basic etiquette things, but she still messes up here and there and remains far too brazen and honest for their liking, and what is all of those formality rules??

how  are you still alive?? » Summer isn't a very good cook and mosty lives off of takeaway or whatever Seungwan or Donggeun bring her this time. Honestly she'd probably be dead without them, they keep everything in the studio organized and the fridge stocked while Summer is busy going around filming or lifting at the gym or writing the script for the next vlog. Neither of them are quite sure how she survived managing the vlog before they came around.

two left feet » She can't dance worth , but you better believe she tries anyway. It's hard to be embarrassed of her terrible dancing efforts when you see how much pure fun she's having. One of her most popular kpop segments of her vlog is when she attemtps to learn kpop dances and mostly falls over a lot.

a straight c student » Summer has never been all that smart, something she often pokes fun of herself. Ask her anything about videography and she's got you, ask her what 67 * 23 is and she pats her pockets for her phone so she can use the calculator.

summer in da house » She's loud. Very loud. Especially that laugh. Anyone who doesn't appreciate the room-filling presence that is Summer Yang is probably not going to be her biggest fan. She can be quiet if prompted, she's terrific at serious and respectful discussions, but her base setting is loud and fun.

what do you mean you're scared? » With herself being so adventurous and brave, she has trouble remembering that not everybody is the same and can be accidentally inconsiderate to the limitations of others.

trivia »

the fambam » Summer made up with her parents a two years after she came to Korea. They're still not her favorite people, but she calls regularly and she's no longer the disappointment of the family. That title belongs to her brother John, who dropped out of medschool and is in a bit of a mid-twenties crisis right now. John often comes to visit her and features in her videos and helps out, for which she usually pays for his stay. As for her sister, Alice, she's a lawyer on her way to becoming a bigshot now and they were never close, but Alice watched Summer's videos now and then and they're on good terms.

the vlog must go on » You better believe she's not going to neglect her vlog during her time at the mansion, do you know how many weeks that (hopefully) is? She's brought all of her equipment along and she's hoping to be able to cover the whole experience. With the popularity (and infamy) of the previous season, that ought to give her ratings a boost!

i'm definitely right! » She can get a bit carried away about  being right, and is a little smug about it when she is right (example A), though she's amicable about losing if she ends up being wrong.

Pretty fly for a bi fry » She's biual and appreciates the company of both genders equally.

let me just check my gay agenda » Summer has always taken an interest in lgbt rights and activism, and while she's not publicly out as biual she has given her support for lgbt rights on her vlog and social media before, and last time Seoul gay pride came along she'd gathered up her courage and covered it on the vlog as well!

call me summerocious » She has a running gag persona on her show called Summerocious where she pretends to be an uptight diva idol.

cone sold stober » Alcohol consumption will result in Summer going full goodnatured loud American. She'll get more physical than she normally does (she tried to adjust to cultural standards and not throw her arms around anyone's shoulders after 3 seconds of meeting them), laugh even louder than usual, mix both languages until her alcohol levels mandate English only, and generally just be having the best of times.

*plays hot summer* » F(X)'s Hot Summer is one of her favorite Summer-puns. She used to play it over montages of herself dying in the summer heat for that extra fun factor.

caffeinate with caution » Summer rarely drinks coffee, but when she does she always gets a crazy energy boost. Proceed with caution.

shoot shoot shoot! » She used to swear a lot, but after working with children for a few years she'd had to learn all of the PG alternatives.

home is where your heart is.

the reason you applied »

Summer wants exposure in the mainstream entertainment industry, not just as a YouTuber. Even if she can't achieve that, her channel is in serious need of a boost, she doesn't know if she can keep affording the studio in Seoul if it doesn't achieve that. So Summer is here to advertise herself as a vlogger, most of all, and maybe make some good friends while she's at it.

strategy »

When it comes to the viewers and the cameras, Summer is a pro. She knows cameras, she knows how to endear herself to that dark shiny lens. When it comes to the bachelors she figures her own humor should carry her far. She's a very friendly, open, and naturally funny person and has the variety experience to make an entertaining situation out of any prompt. Aside from that, she's loud and she's fun and social interaction is in her blood, honestly good luck trying to forget about her, it's not an easy task.

the bachelors »

☆ minhyuk » She's very excited to see him, since she's actually seen some of his dramas! Even better, he seems like a fun sort, someone who's receptive to her invitations to chaos, even if he sometimes takes a little convincing. It still blows her mind how the big actor is the one who feels the most... normal out of all of them. The one that she feels she could crack open a beer with and watch some tv and chat about the most mundane things, and she wants that so bad. As much as she needs someone who's willing to jump into the deep with her, who's with her every step of her crazy ways, she also needs someone who pulls her back into the mundane, who brings her back from the high of life.

But she's hesitant. She's seen the ferocity of a fandom. BTS fans are still witch hunting her for a perceived slight in a harmless skit and Summer has never been very good about dealing with online hate. She's afraid that getting close to him will have the same negative repercussions and she's not sure if she could handle that. So much conflict for such a sweet smile.

She hopes he's not a hidden card since he's already famous, being a millionaire also would be mean! But in all seriousness she hopes os because she doesn't want to find a millionare. She wants to make it herself, she doesn't wan to lean on someone else's money, and she feels like the money factor might create a power imbalance between them.

☆ hoseok » She's not sure what to think about him at first, but when Hoseok turns out to be the most accepting of her boyish nature, and she knows there is more to him than the y male model (though that does not escape her either, he's gorgeous). She looks forward to every moment with him.

She shouldn't like him as much as she does. There's little adventure in Hoseok, he is deathly afraid of hights and whenever she thinks she's getting closet o him he withdraws. He's so hard to figure out for her, and so different than she is. She's easy and open with everything, so painstakingly honest, while he hides secrets in his depths. She loves fun and adventures and jumping into the unknown and he keeps his feet firmly on the ground. But still, there is something about him, and sometimes when they talk she feels like he sees her for everything she really is and it feels incredible.

She's quite certain that he isn't a hidden card, he's secretive and mysterious but in a darker way. Honestly though, she'd prefer not finding a hidden card so that's perfect for her.

☆ hyungwon » There's something about him that she really likes. It might be the way he rolls his eyes when one of the other bachelors says something stupid, or the way he just does his own thing no matter what anyone else says, but she just knows that there is more to him than a mother's dream son in law. She immediately gravitated to him as a person she could hang with, despite the fact that a lust of adventure isn't really in his stars. Summer makes it a mission to pull him into her gravitational pull of fun dumb adventure.

Hyungwon is potential to her. He's the one where she feels like she could help him as much as he helps her, to just let go a little more, to just be a little more spontaneous and a little more impulsive. She's afraid that Hyungwon might be a hidden card, which makes her mre hesitant to approach him despite how much she really likes him.

jooheon » Summer isn't actually all that into clubbing. She likes it every once in a while to let loose, and she's no stranger to drinking, but it's far from her favorite thing to do. That would be fine, if Jooheon wasn't so aggressively into it himself, and that turns Summer off. She loves fun and adventure, but just getting mindlessly drunk isn't her idea of that. What fun is adventure if it's alcohol induced and you hardly remember it in the morning?

changkyun » Summer hasn't met him before, but she knwos of him through her various friends at the fringes of the internainment industry and the nightlife of Seoul. He's known as a wild child, and she's curious to see how much of that extends past the club scene, how much of it extends to a lust for adventure. He has more fun than Jooheon, in any case, and she loves throwing bad jokes at him and seeing how he reacts. That being said, he's purely friend material, but she feels little attraction towards him.

hyunwoo » Summer tried, but Hyunwoo simply has too much awkwardness for her to get through. Still, she knows the gay rumors, and whether they're true or not she does try to hint at the fact that he can talk to her if he wants to. Summer knows much about the lgbt crowd, both at home in the States and in Korea. She could help.

kihyun » There's something off-putting about Kihyun in a different way than Hoseok's box of mystery. She avoids him, honesty. He seems moody sometimes, and not always honest about himself and the way he portrays himself, but in a much more malevolent way than Hoseok does and she doesn't like it one bit.

other contestants » Summer is very much here to have fun and make friends, and that includes the other contestants. She loves meeting new people, and if there's anyone that she particularly likes she will definitely rope them into  featuring in her blogs, both present and future. This includes Gunhee as well.

this is paradise.

This is an interview section. The interview takes place BEFORE the show starts and before your character knows that she's accepted and will participate in the show. Whatever she answers, the bachelors - except for Minhyuk - aren't revealed until the first episode airs, therefore she can't know who's going to be there. The interview is recorded and might appear in TV, keep that in mind. You cannot change the questions.
Oh and by the way... the one who'll interview your character is former bachelors Min Yoongi.

"So...this is season 2 of Bachelor's Paradise. Interesting how people are still torturing themselves with applying for this show. Please, introduce yourself."

  • Summer waved at the camera like she had done so many times for her own vlog whenever she filmed a studio video. It's was incredible how familiar it was. "Hello! I'm Summer Yang, you might know me from my YouTube channel 'Sum Of It's Parts'!"

That was all the professionalism she could muster in front of the one and only Min Yoongi, honestly Summer thought it quite impressive she had managed that at all! "It's really nice to meet you Yoongi, you sure know how to influse a romance show with a good amount of drama!"

"Why do you think you need this program to find love? Is there a reason you couldn't find love on your own?"

  • Summer laughed a little nervously, that question was a lot more barbed than she thought they would get for this interview. "That's a little harsh, don't you think? I've had some boyfriends here and there, but I've always chosen to focus on my career. I've been thinking about that a whole lot lately, the fact that I've put my solo self in front of a potential couple self. Oh man it's ironic isn't it? My vlog is called The Sum but you can't have a sum with only one number." She laughed. Oh that was good, she'd have to remember that for the vlog she was going to do to explain the fact that she'd be competing. No matter that she was actually still putting her career and vlog first by going on this show.

"So I've been a huge fan of the first season, and it really made me think about the whole flying solo thing. Seeing so many weird and crazy people finding the lids to their jars got me thinking that maybe, just maybe, I'd be able to find my own. I considered sending a letter in to LoveRyu, but before I hand my fate over to Nara I thought I'd give the show that started this train of thought a whirl!"

"Why should we choose you and not someone else?"

  • Summer grinned impishly and pointed at herself, giving her eyebrows a good wiggle. "Because I'm a dashing swashbuckler?"

"What do you think about people who gain a lot of money?"

  • "Eh, life goals?" She hadn't really thought much about it, honestly. Some people are rich, others aren't. She doesn't really care. "No but really, I don't give a shoot about who is rich or not, that isn't why I'm here. I'll make my own way, but I'd like to make my own way with a number two beside me, you know?"

"Any hopes or dreams for the future?"

  • "Make my vlog the best vlog in the YouTube kingdom," she said, counting on her hand. "Break into the mainstream variety network," she ticked off another finger. "Become filthy rich." another. "Buy my own island and name it The Land of Eternal Summer. Build up my own militia of fighter penguins too cute for anyone to fight with which I will conquer the earth and crown myself Empress of the World." She laughed at her own jokes so hard she snorted. She'd be embarrassed if she had any shame. "Not necessarily in that order."

"Oh right... did you watch season 1?"

  • "Heck yeah I did! As if I could ever miss that masterpiece!"

"Okay, that's it... why are you looking at me like that? You want to tell me something else?"

  • "Oops, was I staring?" she asked innocently. "It's just, you're so much shorter in real life- ooohkay I'm going to leave before you murder me." She jumped up from her chair when she noticed Yoongi's stare got very murderous. She waaved at the camera. "Goodbye audience, see you soon! Summer out!"

last words.

comments/suggestions » I definitely took a lot of inspiration from Eat Your Kimchi's earlier content for the brand of humor and skits as well as the content Amber makes on her own channel for the content on Summer's! I also based Wonho's reaction to her on the fact that he dated a tomboy model (who turned out to be a trans boy!) back in the day and I think they're still friends, so he obviously has to be open minded!! If I made any assumptions anywhere for the bachelors just override them, I did my best to think of how she might relate to my limited knowledge of the Monsta X guys (Wonho is the only one I really know much about). Ah I'm rambling! Just do your thing, the first season was/is amazing and I know you'll do so well here too!!

scene requests » If you make her go for Minhyuk then it'd be nice to show how conflicted she is between staying the heck away from the harmful fandom and her attraction for him, or if she goes with Hoseok then her conflict between someone who compliments her adventurous side and someone who compliments her philosophical/liberal side and who compensates for her brand of crazy. It might also be fun to contrast Summer's fear for the hidden cards with those who really do want the money.
