Backup Plotline: Rook
Stage Name: Tae Sung
Dance Twin: J-Hope (BTS)
Rap Twin: Rap Monster (BTS)

Years Trained: 4 years (3 at BigHit and 1 at Galaxy)
Trainee Life:

He first entered Big Hit Entertainment when he graduated from high school via an online audition. When he arrived,he didn't really know what to expect and what the company had in store for him or how high their standards would be. He was TOTALLY clueless. He was way out of his comfort zone from all his rapper friends back at the 'The Hub' (Refer to background). Somewhere along the line,in his third year at Big Hit,there was this talent exchange that went on and he was one of the few chosen ones to transfer over to Galaxy Entertainment. Tae Sung spent his first year at Big Hit taking up both Japanese and Chinese lessons every Tuesday and Thursday respectively, took up skill enhancement courses and lived with 5 other trainees, one of which really hated him. (Reasons will be at the rival section) He got along just fine with the other trainees and made some acquaintances as well as some friends. He did make some other rivals but none too serious. He was usually recognised for his hardworking nature and polite attitude. Although there will always be some who think little of him,he always does try to prove them wrong. When he transferred over to to Galaxy,he honestly didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised. The people there were extremely kind but also had mad skills and discipline. He quickly adapted to the lessons there but mandarin mandarin lessons were still dreaded and it honestly seemed like such unfortunate luck that Ki Hong was still breathing down his neck even at Galaxy.

Elaboration:

Don't judge a book by its cover. Although Tae Sung might look exactly like the epitome of an alpha male, his personality is not like that. This man is very intelligent, having grew up in a family that prizes education and learning above everything. He's the kind of student that every student is secretly envious of and the kind of student that every teacher wants in their class. He excels academically. Tae Sung is also rather sweet towards others. He is the kind of guy who would write notes for everyone on Valentine's Day even if his schedule is packed. He is gentle and treats everyone with respect and politeness. Being quite sensitve,he knows when to be serious and tries his very best to understand other people's feelings thus coming off as a fatherly figure who just wants to make sure that everyone is well before he concentrates on himself. However, this sometimes results in him being taken advantage of. He is too soft-hearted because of his desires to please everyone. Sometimes,he doesn't even know if he's being an accomplice in someone's acts of mischief! This may also result in him being a little too nosy. Tae Sung is the kind of person who wants to know how others are doing and although to him,it may seem like he's being concerned but in actual fact,he's just being a busybody. He is also mature beyond his years in a way that he understood the importance the small things in life due to his upbringing by his grandmother. He was with his grandmother for most of his childhood and studied a lot, hence he never really had a taste of what teenagers really did for fun.Being a too impulsive sometimes,he jumps to conclusions too quickly and makes decisions without thorough thoughts when under extreme stress. Honestly even if he holds the position of the 'King',it may seem like the 'Queen' is more dominant! He also has very poor time management and is not punctual. Tae Sung has this habit of always saying '5 more minutes' and takes 20 minutes in the end. This can be very frustrating for the members when they have to wait for him to get ready and risk being late for any arrangements. Tae Sung will however, take full responsibility for any mistakes that he makes and will not allow himself to drag the entire group down, making him very responsible as a person. He believes that as a co-leader,he is his duty to keep everything in check and if any mishaps were to happen,it would be his fault for not doing his role as co-leader. He is also very hardworking and tries his best everyday to be a better version of himself. Another thing about this man is that he's not very good at keeping secrets.Let me explain. He's not a good liar. If anyone were to ask him anything and if he were to try lying,it is very obvious when he lies because his ears will turn red and he would keep staring at his hands. That is if you can catch him...Seriously,his way of avoiding instances like this is running away! He is just so easily swayed that its not even funny anymore. His stage persona is totally different however. He oozes charisma onstage and rocks it well. He gives everyone this impression of a kingka but it soon becomes apparent that beneath this hard, ruggish exterior is a soft, sensitive soul.

Background:

Go Tae Sung was born on the 17th of November 1994 in Gwangju,South Korea to the wealthy Go family. His father was the assistant director of Royal Blue Hotel (Now director) and his mother was a judge under the Korean government Ministry of Law Enforcement, He didn't have a childhood filled with memories of his parents and it was always his grandmother who took care of him since his mother went back to work only after 1 year of maternal leave and although she did play with him and take care of him,she was still replying to work emails most of the time. It was his grandmother who really took good care of him. His childhood was never short of anything, except maybe parental love. His father was rarely home due to overseas businesses. During the day,he would usually be out in the gardens playing with his grandmother and baking cookies. Afternoons usually consisted of going to the playground to hang around. He also quickly made friends with So Hwan, the girl from next door whose father was a very high ranking figure in the finance industry. They used to host playdates at the park and at each other's homes. Occasionally,Tae Sung's sister would even join. He was never complacent about his riches though, his grandmother taught him better. Tae Sung was taught at a young age, ever since he could speak that humbleness is a very sacred thing and that arrogance will only result in the fall of someone.

Even as a kid,he liked music. No,he loved it. He was always running around the house with underwear and a plastic pot over his head with spaghetti sauce all over his face as he strummed wildly on the ukelele. His grandmother would take pictures and now still about it till this day. He would often make up silly little tunes to show his grandmother but his parents would disapprove. They didn't like their son making such a fool of himself even within the house and didn't appreciate his love for music. To them,it was a worthless hobby. Their disapproval only grew when they noticed that he was into catchy beats (Like other kids, actually) so they decided instead of suppressing their son's own interest, they would at least get him to be more interested in another type of music. They started buying loads of classical tracks and even signed him up for violin lessons. Nevertheless, his violin teacher was this matronly woman who had very high expectations right when he stepped through the posh glass doors. He disliked these lessons and always screamed to high heavens when his grandmother was to send him for the lessons. His grandmother would sometimes relent, only to be chided by his parents. Ultimately, they cancelled these lessons. Yet,there was more to come. His parents began to sign him up for tons of lessons (math, creative writing, tennis). By this time,he was already starting on elementary school. His elementary school days were pretty stressful due to the many lessons and he had been pressured by everyone to get good grades. The only person who didn't put any pressure on him. She would bring him glasses of juice and make him cupcakes so he didn't overwork himself. His sister would often drag him out for cycling trips to the park. This studying, although very stressful, had paid off. He and his sister scored very well.

Their parents were ecstatic and finally thought they were on the 'right path', Little did they know,Tae Sung secretly listens to hip hop tracks online. They never asked,so there never was a need for him to lie. He loved the beats and slowly began to try to create his own tunes. He wasn't just in love with hip hop music,he was in love with the whole culture of it. Tae Sung began to teach himself how to dance and rap through online lessons. Whenever he was done with his homework and revision,it was all he did. The only people who knew that he did this was his grandmother and sister. He sailed through elementary and middle school just fine. He was well-liked by the teachers and the kids didn't mind him too much. He achieved good grades and was even class president in 5th grade.

High school came along. This was the period in his life where he experienced bullying for the first time.  The students there didn't like how he got into the teacher's good graces and they despised how he always seemed to have it all together. Sometimes they would take his money and other times, they would kick or trip him in school. Even though So Hwan was by his side, his high school life was pretty depressing. His friends all seemed to fit in just fine and only he seemed out of place. Tae Sung began to invest himself more deeply into rap and dance. He made up tracks and choreographed his own routines to his own music. He never showed these creations of his own to anyone. His parents only really cared about his grades while his sister was too busy with her own studies to talk to him. He still kept in close contact with his grandmother but it was apparent that he's a bit more closed off.

He also went for this exchange programme in Germany when he was 16 for an exchange programme. You could say it was the first time in a long while he ever felt free as a person. He thoroughly enjoyed the cultures there and even got close to one of the girls in his team,Lee Young Hae who ended up dating. SPOILER ALERT: The relationship didn't last very long.  He was so inspired by the hip hop culture there that even though he was away from home,he created new tracks and even employed Jakob's (His German friend) help. Some of which later served as inspiration for CHECKMATE.

His big break came when he was alone at an alleyway after 4 months back in Korea, rapping one of his own music by himself. It was sort of his place of inspiration what with all the interesting graffiti.  This was where he met Nam Hyun. He was 17 at the time and Nam Hyun had been 18. Nam Hyun was part of this underground organisation called 'The Hub'. This organisation although primarily focusing on rap also embraces hip hop dance. He was asked to join. At first,Tae Sung denied. He didn't exactly want to be a part of this underground scene thing. Nam Hyun left but not without leaving him a namecard.

When Tae Sung got home, the thought of the namecard still lingered in his mind. He had been so quick to say no that now he began to wonder what it would have been like if he said yes. His sister noticed this daze he was in and after a bit of probing,he revealed that he had been offered an invitation to be a underground rapper. The conversation went like this:

MI RAN: 'Wait, what? You did what?'

TAE SUNG: 'I said no...?'

MI RAN: 'OH MY GOD,WHY?! Why did you say no? You should've said yes! God,sometimes you're so stupid!'

TAE SUNG (Shocked and offended): 'I was caught off guard! You got no call to call me stupid!'

Long story short,he ended up taking up the offer after a long time of consideration. And also of course, his sister's vehement insistence. It honestly turned out to be one of the best decisions he ever made. He learned a lot of new techniques and greatly enhanced his skills. He even gained lifelong friends like Nam Hyun and Yong Chan. Life seriously began to look up for him and he seemed happier much to his sister's and grandmother's joy. The old sweet Tae Sung was coming back to them. They were always there to cover for him whenever his parents asked about him so he didn't have to face them.

FATHER: Where's Tae Sung?

GRANDMOTHER: 'Oh,he's off at a classmate's home for an astronomy project. Nothing you need to worry about!

~

MOTHER: Why isn't Tae Sung at home?

MI RAN: 'He's out to the mall to buy school supplies and won't be back anytime soon.'

He developed his talents so steadily and quickly rose up among the ranks that a talent scout who was visiting requested for him to audition for BigHit Entertainment. By this time,he had been so sure that a musical career was what he truly wanted. He realised that he shouldn't be living for anyone else. He needed to start living for himself and do what he wanted in life. He sent in an audition clip that showed him rapping and a short dance clip to 'Let's go' by Travis Barker. The day he got accepted,he broke the news to his parents. Nevertheless to say, they were beyond shocked. His father refused to speak to him for almost half a year and whenever Tae Sung was around,he would mutter under his breath: 'Fool'. His mother was upset to say the least and started to beg him to change his mind. Up till this day,his mother has already accepted his chosen career but his relationship with his father remains sour. There's always this feeling of sadness and disappointment in him but he tries not to let these feelings get in the way of his own dreams. Later when BigHit and Galaxy Entertainment had a talent exchange program,he was chosen by the trainers over at Galaxy Entertainment to join them.

He was a bunch of nerves and she took pity on him and sort of began to interact with and comfort him. Boy,was Tae Sung scared. He got very jittery and was even lightly shaking! This was the period when he just recovered from his fall not long ago and missed a bunch of lessons. Meili had calmed him down. After the evaluations (which he did well in),Tae Sung treated Meili to a meal to thank her for her support and a friendship blossomed. Rival:

Cho Ki Hong / 22 / Trainee at BigHit / Ki Hong,a trainee under the rap department was once Tae Sung's roommate. He had taken an instant dislike towards Tae Sung because he had came from a wealthy family. Ki Hong wasn't very well off and he particularly hated that Tae Sung seemed to have everything right from the first day he moved into the dorm. He thought Tae Sung got in due to family connections (which is totslly untrue). Ki Hong's attitude didn't just show itself in the dorms. It also extended to training sessions. He was pretty much the a**hole of the trainee batch but still thought he was better than everyone. His intense hatred only grew when other trainees as well as Tae Sung was given praises for their rapping. Tae Sung didn't necessarily dislike Ki Hong when he first arrived. He was quite keen on being friends actually. It was due to Ki Hong's rude attitude that made Tae Sung change his mind about him and they are still to this day-enemies.

Love Interest

Name: Edith Mansfield
Nickname(s):

  • @hottacozz
  • A (As given by fans. A for anonymous)
  • Eddy (Given by her friends)
  • Firework (Given by Tae Sung as a term of endearment because of her explosive and huge personality)

Birthdate: 3 February 1996
Occupation: Student at Ewha Women's University (Journalism major)

Personality:

Edith is a very fiesty girl. That is what everyone would say if you ask them to describe her in a word. This girl doesn't take no bullsh*t for anyone and would always stand up for what she believes is morally right. She's not afraid to go against a whole crowd of people even if she is severely outnumbered if she believes she's right which makes her very stubborn. She has bite in her and is not easily taken for a pushover. When people try to belittle her,she is the type of girl who would grab the person by their collar and challenge them to take further action which might seem to some people that she's brutish and unladylike. She is also extremely witty and resourceful, able to think on the spot and is a great problem solver. Throw any question or situation at her and she will be able to think of a way through it fast. Her wits can sometimes get in the way of her success because it may come off as arrogant but she's really just being herself. She is kind to others though, unless they do something that makes her think that they do not deserve her goodwill. Edith is a very wild person and is the life of a party, almost completely opposite to Tae Sung. She is the type of girl who goes clubbing at 10pm and goes home at 4am,with her body sweaty from all that dancing. She brings joy to parties and makes people feel welcomed and acknowledged. She can be quite sensual and bold however when in a relationship, usually taking the initiative. She cares deeply for her loved ones and would take a bullet for them. She's a giver, not so much of a taker in relationships.

Interactions:

(ONLINE)

*Before the r/s*

They were just normal friends talking online. Their conversations mainly focus on their days and jazz like that.

*During or after the r/s*

Not much talking went on because he was cautious about it. He didn't want people to drag her in the mud just because she was dating him during their peak moment in the industry. They talked for not more than 5 minutes before hanging up.

(IRL)

Their interactions are pretty amusing actually. It sort of resembles a relationship between a parent and a child. He is usually the one who tries to rein her in whenever she gets too loud during their secret dates. He is deathly afraid of getting caught but she's just too wild to be reined in like that. She longs for an open relationship because she's tired of hiding but he cannot sacrifice the fate of CHECKMATE during its rise among the ranks due to his own selfish desires.

Love Story:

They kind of met online during his trainee days when Tae Sung was on a chatsite, looking for someone to talk to. He matched with Edith (They didn't do video chat). It was a sort of website whereby people from all over the world are in this online community together to make penpals. According to her profile, she had been living in South Korea for a little over a year and was looking for someone to practice her Korean with. Out of boredom,he decided to drop her a message. The conversation grew as they got to know each other further. They both realised along the way that he could speak English fluently so there really wasn't much of a communication barrier. These weekly conversations soon became a daily affair and they were revealing things about themselves to the other day by day. Ultimately, they both decided to send pictures to each other. He thought she was ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. He never really felt this way before and there was this feeling that he knew deep down was a crush. Tae Sung then sent his picture, only to get an angry reply from her that his 'joke' wasn't funny and that he should stop kidding around. She called him out for being an 'idiot' who thought she didn't know who CHECKMATE was and just randomly ripped a picture off the internet. (At this point, they had only debuted for about 2 months or so) She logged off and refused to talk to him for a week but once she got online,he immediately messaged her. He was so desperate for forgiveness that he suggested that they do facetime. She agreed. The moment his face appeared on her screen, she was so surprised that she fell off her bed! No words can describe the amount of shame she felt for being so rude to him a week ago but he didn't seem to mind. She couldn't even contain her excitement but also understood his request that she kept this conversations between them secret. Edith would simply tell her friends that she was texting an online girl friend while he would pretend that he was texting producers to set up appointments. They eventually decided to meet up in private at a downtown park at 5am in the morning so they would not be caught easily. They had an awesome time catching up,talking about their pasts and confessed their feelings for each other at the end of the date when he bought ice cream for the both of them (He had his cap down and his mask on). They didn't meet often for he was busy most of the time. Whenever she was free,he wasn't. Whenever he was free, she wasn't. It was a difficult relationship to maintain. They met about once every 3 weeks and sometimes they would even end up in arguments over their own devotions towards one another. Some arguments took only a few hours to be resolved. Others took days or even weeks. Eventually, they got 'caught' by a fan while they were out at night at the playground. Pictures were taken of them playing at the swings and his side profile was visible but her back was facing the camera. He noticed the camera light flashed and he paled. Immediately,Tae Sung gripped onto her wrist and they ran. There was hollering from the anonymous fan but they still managed to escaped. It wasn't long before the image was uploaded online. Despite her protests,he firmly decided to cut off contact from her for the time being. The rumors were just spiralling and speculations grew increasinly wilder. There were so many obstacles in their relationship.

Ending: They promised to stay good friends because they realise that they do not belong/fit in each other's worlds.

Trivia:

  • She is American (International student)
  • She first saw CHECKMATE when her Korean friend introduced her to a music video

Dating History:

  • Dated a high school sweetheart named Lee Young Hae for about 1.5 years in high school but broke it off because she couldn't accept the fact that he has an ambition to be a rapper (Apparently,it wasn't a real job). She left him for another guy from another school. They never did keep in contact after she migrated to Canada. He did try to persuade her to change her mind but she had been set. This actually caused him to be a little more closed off for about a week, only to get chided by Nam Hyun about being a man.
  • Dated Meili very briefly for about 4 months before she broke it off because they were better off as friends

Future Relationships:

  • Maybe a few instances whereby V and him are together for work purposes and there are hints of romantic attractions? Maybe V could be the one who is there for him when he is having problems with Edith. (If you decide that he's going to be biual, that is.)

ual Orientation: Either he's heteroual or biual (But he doesn't really pay much notice of his own attraction to the same and shrugs his feelings off ) *You can decide*
