Twisted

Zitao is all shy smiles and pink cheeks.

As he glances at Yifan from across the room, he feels his heartbeat stutter, but Yifan will never know that -will never know the quiet giggles and eyes filled with affection that come from just the other side of the room.

Since the beginning of the semester, Zitao had harnessed an almost instant attraction with the hot guy in his anthropology class, Wu Yifan. But being almost painfully shy, Zitao had opted for just watching from a distance, feeling the heat go straight to his cheeks every time Yifan saunters into the room, charming smile on that narrow, handsome face. Maybe if he could collect the courage, he could even approach Yifan sometime, but chances of that happening anytime soon are slim to none.

But Zitao is okay with keeping it that way for now. He’ll settle with the unnoticed glances he throws his crush’s way, almost satisfied in a childish game of admiring from afar, in complete secret.

Zitao wants to rethink his life choices once he starts frequenting the route Yifan takes to get to class, but he knows it’ll just remain a thought he’d never put action to. It’s by no means any closer to his own classes, but he decides that the only reason he needs to invalidate the reasons why this isn’t the best idea is the tranquil faces Yifan makes as he quietly appreciates the scenery, even if he’s seen it a million times.

Yifan reaches out with long, slender fingers reach out to a fallen blossom, and oh, how Zitao wishes he were the one to be graced with such tender caresses.

Zitao’s heart flutters again.

October’s chilly air results in students seeking shelter in the nearest available building with heat, and because cold early mornings are groggy and lethargic, most of the students make a stop at the nearby coffee shop before going to their morning classes.

Inside the coffee shop, sweet aromas that smell of cinnamon and pumpkin spice are enough to distract students from the biting cold outside, and relaxing atmosphere is reminiscent of one of those hole in the wall, hipster cafes.

It is by complete chance that Zitao spots Yifan at the front of the line, gingerly taking his steaming chile mocha and blueberry muffin, and giving the barista a polite smile before he leaves. Once he reaches the front of the line, Zitao finds himself ordering the exact same thing without a second thought.

And perhaps Zitao’s slight crush on Yifan is developing more into an obsession, with the way he starts memorizing the other’s usual hangout spots, favorite food establishments, and even his mannerisms. He knows what he’s doing is dangerous -its creepy- but he can’t help it because he just loves seeing how the simplest things can make Yifan’s face light up.

That’s the only reason needs as he finds himself once again facing the chilly weather of the outdoor amphitheater while he watches Yifan chat idly with his friends, completely oblivious to Zitao’s fixed gaze.
