BACKGROUND
taejoon is born to a very dysnfunctional korean family in america. mother likes drinking amber liquid. father likes to invite pretty but mean women over. his 10 year older brother likes to smoke funny-smelling plants. father likes throwing stuff a lot too while mother really likes yelling. brother likes lounging in the living room with a vacant look in his eyes or picking fun at taejoon.
taejoon goes to school and observes other children and their families. some are kind of like taejoon's but there are also mothers who kiss their children's cheeks, fathers who ruffle their children's hair and brothers and sisters who hug and play with their siblings. he knows there's something wrong with his family. his family does that too, but only when there are other people. his heart feels heavy and cold.
taejoon proves to be a very smart student. he gets high scores and a's in his school work. he's also very good at sports. his family snorts at his accomplishments and tells his he could be better, though taejoon knows they're bragging about him behind his back. his heart has lots of cracks in it.
taejoon is 8 years old and becomes taller and smarter. he knows that. his parents have daily fights and then turn their (bad, very bad) attentions to their youngest. they hit him and verbally destroy him. taejoon vows to leave the instant he can and to never look back. he vows to be a better person and to never be like them. he locks his heart in ice and hides it behind walls. he becomes aloof and cold and blunt but never mean and harsh. he makes sure his speech is perfect and his manners even more so.
taejoon is 11 years old when his family dies. his parents and brother leave him at his grandmother's because he's sick with a cold and can't go with them to their "perfect family vacation" to the bahamas. on their way to the airport, a drunk driver hit their car. they died on impact. taejoon feels a little sad (they're still his family, after all) but wasn't overtly affected.
grandmother takes him in. life is very different with her. she's kind and gentle and thoughts of "how is she related to his mother" has crossed his mind a lot. she doesn't seem to mind how cold or how sharp taejoon is but taejoon is afraid she'll end up hating him and he doesn't open up. taejoon also gets a penpal in the form of won miyoung due to a school project. miyoung and taejoon live very different lives: she's rich, he comes from a middle income family; she has everything she needs and he needs to save every penny for weeks just to treat himself. taejoon doesn't like the rich brat much and always has sharp replies to her but he realizes how utterly lonely her life is ("umma and appa are never home much after junyoungie's dea," one of her letters trailed off; "the kids at school don't like me much," another stated, a suspicious wet mark near that sentence; "they see a rich girl who has everything but i would give everything up to spend some more time with my parents and to have real friends," the p.s that made him realize the truth about miyoung told him) and how she keeps on reaching for him and how she never judges him despite how cold he is to her. at the same time, he saw his grandmother's efforts and saw how his actions were hurting her, even when she tried not to show it.
taejoon opens up to miyoung and grandmother. he lets them see the broken kid under his mask and they help him heal (he doesn't know how much he helps miyoung and grandmother heal too - grandmother over the scar of her daughter, taejoon's mother, practically abandoning her after moving to a foreign country and how she followed her daughter and was always there and was always rebuffed; miyoung over how others treated her, how people judged her, over how much her parents lacked in showing their care for her after her twin brother died). he tries to be nicer to people and be more gentle with his words. for the first time, he has a true family and a true friend. even after the school project is over, he still keeps up with miyoung.
two years later, grandmother dies peacefully in her sleep. taejoon knew it was coming - grandmother was old, growing weaker each passing day and needing more help than before - but it hurt. he was tossed into the foster system.
taejoon was considered old when it came to the adoption and foster systems. he ended up bouncing to many families - some families didn't like his attitude, some didn't want an older child, some wanted a brighter, happier child, etc. some foster families were nice, some weren't. taejoon's only thankful that he wasn't sent to the overly abusive ones. truthfully, the only light in his life during this time was miyoung - sweet, supportive miyoung who always knew what to say and tell him.
his luck seemed to change a year later, when he was adopted by a wealthy, childless korean couple. they were nice, didn't care about his attitude and gave him unwavering support. he moved to seoul and, to his surprise, he ended up moving right next to miyoung. apparently, his new parents and her parents were - and still are - best friends.
(taejoon has always had a crush on generous, kind miyoung. she was there for him when she could have easily thrown away his letters when his problems began spiraling. he began falling hard when he got to know her with her curves and her edges, her flaws and strengths. he asked her out, with his parents' and her parents' permission, on her 15th birthday. the crazy thing is? she said yes.)
taejoon now has an amazing set of parents, a pretty good aunt and uncle (aka miyoung's parents), and a sweet girlfriend. sure, life still throws roadblocks here and there but when he's got awesome people to back him up, how bad can it be?

SCHOOL LIFE you know that brooding, cold, and mysterious guy you always see in animes and manhwas? well, that's taejoon. he's also known as half of one of the mijoon couple in krsa. he's truthfully much looser and easygoing when in 2-f and, despite what he claims ("this class is filled with crazy people."), he actually likes to strange, dysfunctional family (called 2-f) that he's a part of even though he thinks some are annoying, idiots or both.

his face twitched minutely, "it was my biological grandmother's death anniversary. i flew to america to properly honor her, i left on friday and came back on sunday. of course, i was absent since i took an early morning flight," he shows actual emotion, his lips curled in distaste.

taejoon prefers not to talk about them at all. they hurt him a lot and he just really prefers to leave it all in the past. to them, they're not family, to be honest. they were just the people he was born to who liked to verbally and physically abuse him and an older boy who thought of him as a punching bag.

taejoon considers taehyung and mina his real parents. love, support, connection and bonds make a true family, in taejoon's opinion. even though taehyung is the owner and ceo of an electronics company and mina is a lawyer, they've never let taejoon feel he's not enough for them, that his personality and should be changed, that he's of a lower station to them.

taejoon likes his girlfriend's family and parents' best friend - they're pretty good people. he's still a bit sour over their neglect on miyoung for over a year after her twin died but he can get past that since he can see they're trying hard to make it up for her. they treat him like a son already.

from what miyoung has told him, junyoung was one of the best brothers ever. taejoon knows it could be a bit biased since it's her twin brother after all, but he thinks he would've liked to meet junyoung and they would've liked each other - junyoung sounded sunny enough to melt his cool exterior, after all.

taejoon and he have a kind of love-hate relationship, where yaoxun gives him love while taejoon gives him distaste. despite that, many knows taejoon is actually pretty fond and amused by him. yaoxun knows that too, even with taejoon being in complete denial about it.
