Being a better writer

I lack a lot as a writer.

That’s a fact. Not that I feel shame about it or anything, I haven’t written a lot (fiction at the least. Essays in university are plenty). Furthermore, I don’t really plan on becoming an author.

It is simply my hobby.

However, as with every hobby the goal is to improve your skill and mastering your craft. So that every work, whether it is writing, drawing, or cooking, becomes a little better than the last.

Additionally, I feel passionate about my stories. I want them to be the best they can be, even if it’s not for the intend for sell.

I love to see my characters grow and change and experience different scenarios. Honestly, at time I feel like I hardly have any control over them. I set a plot but they take me where they want to go. Not where I plan them too.

Thus, I want to do them justice and give them the best setting.

I also take into account the readers. I want them to love the story and characters as much as I do. I want them to feel all the emotions, frights, love and experience the characters go through.

I love to imagine someone getting into the story, just as much as I do when I read. I want to make the readers cry, laugh, heck fall in love. I want my readers to forget the outside one just for a moment and become part of the story.

But as of now, I don’t feel I’m anywhere close.

Now I’m not writing this post, for any of you to deny it or encourage me. I mean in the end it’s just a hobby and I’m happy to do it. Moreover, I’m not shy to face the reality of my skill, or lack thereof.

However, I do genuinely want to become better.

So, I have set on a quest to do just that (and I’m on summer break now and I need stuff to do when I’, not working my part-time job XD).

And I know some of you, are also writers, who also wish to become better. Or maybe are just interested in becoming better readers.

So I propose we take this journey together. Not that it will take up a lot of your time haha

I’ll post some of the things I found on writing and how to put into words the world or story you’ve created in your mind. Also, a lot of us aren't English native speakers and it can be hard to find the words or expression to make our stories clear and understandable.

So here is a short video for Ted-talk (love that YouTube channel) on “How to write descriptively”

">http://

If any of you find or know of something, I hope you’ll share it with me. This is a community after all and I hope we can help and support each other.

Hope to see you comment if you wish to join me ^.^

P.S I have no idea how you put up a video :( Help! Please!

I'm in agreement with you.^^ I'm not a writer either, I never refer to myself as a writer. I consider myself a good storyteller. There are so many area's of writing I need to improve in. But since I write as a hobby I try not to beat myself up over it too much. I don't get paid for my stories and it's a struggle just get people to see the need to give support by upvoting and commenting. I have improved from when I first started writing here on AFF, and there always room for improvement. Thank you for that video clip! :) It will be useful in my future endeavors. I think you have very good skills as an author but I understand your desire to become better. I wish you the best and that you reach your goal. :) You have my support! ^^

I agree with all your words and, "I set a plot but they take me where they want to go. Not where I plan them too." - this got me the most. Sometimes I feel like I'm lost in my own story ^^"
I myself, not a good writer & not English native speaker, so I hope we all can improve our skills to be a better writer in future.

About the video, did you meant to put in a blog post? If yes, you just copy the video's embed code & paste it :)
