consider all of this coming from a grown 35-year-old though, so he's not so much of a manchild either.

Origin story

ambiguous as he is, insoo remembered himself as arriving in hong kong, illegally. he didn't remember anything of his past and didn't recognize the language they were talking with. he met with a doctor who worked for them, and the doctor said he was twelve, and he would start the harsh training to become a hitmen for the triad. he never had a name of his own before that.

he was known as jason lee, one of the triad's skilled hitmens. not only he started out at seventeen by doing waterworks, but he started learning medicine and (mostly human body) from the doctor to lethally kill or torture people easily without any problems. at this time, he took a better relationship with the son, jaewook, also called dean. it wasn't necessarily friendship, but among those who insulted and abused him, or generally hostile and uncaring, jaewook was just neutral, and that makes him automatically better.

things took turns when dean suddenly had a baby, at the age of 29 — jason was at the same age, and dean asked for a request to the hitman; to cover him up as he planned to get away to the east coast. jason will have one reward he'd never had; freedom of living, even if he was illegal.

things were supposed to be smooth. jason would slowly start breaking all the connections down, but he made one fatal mistake; dean's daughter had the supernatural power of healing, along with her grandfather (who disappeared few months prior to her birth), and the triad wanted something about her. they weren't willing to let her go, and hunted down both jason and dean when they tried to escape. dean was fatally shot and jason took his baby with him, staging a fake suicide when both were extremely cornered, but he successfully escaped with the baby.

in new york, he was left alone, knowing that if he went back again to hong kong, the triad is going to hunt him down because it meant they knew he wasn't dead all along. but being alone in new york, where some triad members stationed there could detect him and he basically had no qualificaations for a decent job left him with two choices; keep the baby or put her in an adoption center. he didn't have the desire to murder her and he feared that she couldn't find a good home either, fearing the same fate as he is. so he took care of her, naming her gong aewoo, while he changed his name as gong insoo, and became a dishwasher at a shabby restaurant.

while he was familiar with dean, he never became too close and both simply kept a distance with each other. it was only when they had to run away that jason knew that dean came from a long line of people with healing power, including his father and daughter. by unfortunate circumstances dean was shot. insoo sometimes got annoyed at him for leaving both of them alone in this, but on the other hand, regretted that he wasn't careful enough to cost a life.

insoo may have not liked her in the first place, but now has grown protective and loved her dearly as he could. aewoo knew nothing about her biological father, even though insoo and aewoo started seeing that she was able to do healing powers, and could only try to help her best as he could.

trivia

— there has been a lot of troubles that he lost count of how important his identity has always been. he was tempted to go back as hired hitmen, but he didn't want to give aewoo a lot more trouble to see that her dad is a criminal. it's also why he wanted to forget that he was jason lee.
— insoo is more jaded than before with dean's death and the general death count that he had for the past 18 years. one of the most merciful kills were that of a young dad when he was 21, where he faked the father's death.
— insoo could barely afford luxury, but he would probably cheated a little bit if aewoo wanted something nice. 
— insoo doesn't really crack emotions, but it wasn't like he was forced to shut it out. years of killing made so much indifference that he maintained a pretty upbeat attitude towards those who weren't hostile.
— insoo's english was tacky if he speaks and he barely survived by working in a hong kong restaurant as a dishwasher. he picked up the language relatively fast though, after six years of living and self-studying. 
— insoo survived off the money he had from hitman jobs and the one he grabbed from dean, but even if he could somewhat put her illegally to public school, he still worked as a dishwasher to continue supporting both of them. his status may have pushed him to the HERO project.

Alright. Good morning, my name is agent cameron adams with the united nations. my specialty is in military psychology, so i'm here to determine if you'll be a good fit for our project. Now, Can you tell me about yourself?

i'm insoo gong, and i know you had some information about me, so i'm considering that you collected informations from captured triad members. or if you don't, i was a hired hitman, but i'm just washing dishes these days. insoo looked up at adams, who looked up at him with a mild surprise. the older man's shirt and jeans weren't the best and looked quite shabby, but he noticed the scarring at his left hand that looked like it was stitched, similarly to a doctor.

i understand that you have some special... abilities. Can you describe what those are for me?

i was a hitman for a triad, not giving you names, and i used to be for about twelve years. i know the easiest cuts and wounds, and i learned enough about poisons and medications to practice them in waterworks. i'm also feeling that you're getting scared, and i don't know, i'm feeling like you didn't get enough information other than me being an illegal immigrant and from hong kong, which i'm quite relieved at. insoo smiled a little, looking at adams.

do you have any weaknesses that i should know about?

i felt that i'm not interested in getting melee fighting. i don't think i like putting so much instructions that it kills to multitask. and i had an idea that some incarcerated triad members in the US would be free and tell their leaders that the two of us are alive. i don't want aewoo to meet a horrible fate of her own. understood? insoo looked up and while his tone didn't change, something in his eyes made him turn away from adams.

What would you consider your "origin story"?

aewoo says i'm her hero, but i don't know, i'm not. she didn't know what i do and even i don't know what my past was. all i think that i was born in korea, probably south, and somehow ended up being in hong kong at the age of twelve. i became a hitman, and the only education i receive was extended from reading, writing, and counting. then i started learning about human body, their wounds, etc. from a korean doctor working for them. he has a son, insoo stopped for a while. never knew the dad can magically heal people. the son had a girl and asked for me for my 'last mission'; cover for him to the east coast of the us. he couldn't make it, but i did, and now both of us are here as illegal immigrants.

Can you tell me about your family, friends, and work or school relationships? anyone important or close to you in your life, really. There's a confidentiality agreement at stake, here.

i don't have friends. the father and me were neutral. aewoo is still my daughter, however, and i don't know, is this your first time dealing with superpowers or something? she has healing powers but i'm not sure how far it is, involving the death itself. she has her teachers, definitely. 

is there anything or anyone in your life, past or present, that may compromise you or project hero in any way?

i kill people in the past. it's not only my original triad coming after me, but others where i did kill their members too. i don't feel like the idea of vigilante justice works, because i'm not a hero. i can't turn back my past and this 'new' me is barely better. insoo huffed. hitmans don't huff, really. he laughed cynically.

let's change the subject. what can you do for project hero?

temporary medic, spy, data collector, gigolo, assassin, temporary biology teacher but i also highly doubt that they need them. i execute things nicely for you, but that's a must, not an option. oh, i assess situation in detail, so any plans that sounded it was barely complete is unsettling. and probably people, but i'm not you. i adapt fast to most environments.

how do you work best? do you prefer working in a team or alone?

teamwork is nonsense if you work as a hitman; everyone gets their own jobs its ridiculous to interact except to stab someone in the back or a certain deal made. i'm not a hitman, it doesn't kill to get some people who wouldn't kill you when you're not looking.

you're one of very few to get to this stage of screening to be a hero. Why didn't you reject our invitation?  why are you here?

that victor promised certain things if i accept it. adams looked up at him with questioning brow. i think you work horribly with him or something, but he promised that aewoo and i will get a citizenship in usa if i at least made it out. i also need a job. inso shrugged.

shall we roleplay a few scenarios? let's say a terrorist has another member of the project hostage with a bomb in their cell with them. there's also a nuclear missle pointed at new york. you know how both of these can be disarmed, but you have twenty minutes before the bomb detonates and the nuclear missle is launched. what do you do?

i believe you have the whole sects of FBI and CIA and separate bomb disposing groups who can disarm the bomb and are specially trained for it even if the first two groups couldn't, and i have faith that the members can get out of it, since you didn't explicitly say their health condition either. nuclear missiles are only owned by countries, no? i'm pretty sure twenty minutes less is enough since there are legitimate scientists that can help. i can oversee the escaping member.

the project has reason to believe that one of four individuals is the leader of a major crime ring. There isn't enough evidence to identify which one, but you and another hero have a hunch that points to one of them. we're informed that the crime ring plans to violently murder a large number of innocent people in 48 hours. what do you do?

i've seen leaders of crime rings. i don't really see the priorities of identifying them first when there are other people in the crime ring. does that make sense? i hope it does. i think that the crime ring is identified should be easy. the way they would murder the large number is also unclear, so its best to tackle where they're controlling it. i don't know, how many people are you choosing for the project? you may need more reinforcements. i can oversee the people, but i'm not sure i can convince the others other than using my age. i mean, this is a confusing question.

you're sent on a solo mission to a remote location to gather information about new military weapons a terror group is designing. while on the mission, your cover is blown before you go in, but you know where and how to get the weapon designs. what do you do?

and a hitman never get his identity discovered until it is too late. you need backup even in solo missions. either run or fight or both. you're doomed if you're alone, even if the person is super good, unless they're invisible or something.

another hero tells you that they've fallen in love with you. you return their feelings. what do you do?

i'm 35. there are younger girls who like me though, and most likely i trust the person greatly that they're willing to be a mom. aewoo asked about those things sometimes. i never know where her real mom is, but you know, as long as they're willing and they;re older then 18.

anything i missed? i know there are some assassin-like characters all around but i guess constantine is different because he is more biologically involved too? eh. he's fine with any consenting adult who loved him and his daughter and capable of having a healthy relationship with him.
