3 weeks of hell are over...

I had to do a placement in a nursery for the past three weeks and I have never encountered such terrible staff before.

  • It took 3 days for anyone to acknowledge my presence.
  • They allow children to run riot around the nursery, I can’t count how many things were broken in the last three weeks.
  • Children are not reprimanded when physically harming one another. I literally witnessed a child jumping on another child's back and no one said anything? (And apparently I was too abrupt to the child when I told them to stop because it was dangerous?)
  • There is zero discipline.
  • Children are forced to take part in activities that they aren't interested in, just so the staff can tick their name off in a box.
  • The complete lack of consistency on what the children are/are not allowed to do. It literally changes from minute to minute. One minute they can't run, the next they're being told to run around... Make up your ing mind...
  • The staff spent more time talking to one another than interacting with the children.

But…

I’m the one that’s in the wrong for doing my work and my observations of the children (which apparently made the staff uncomfortable?) and stopping children from hurting each other? I’ve never been so furious.

The part that's the most frustrating is that I had a report to be filled in, and the manager of the establishment, whom I only spoke with twice in the entire three weeks, is the one that wrote it. So she has no idea about what I was actually doing on a day to day basis? She wrote some negative things, and said that it was my fault that these things happened even though it was because of a complete lack of communication - which she has stated in the report? I tried to talk to the staff in my room everyday, but they didn't give a flying about what I had to say. Thankfully I have the chance to write my comments on the place, and I will be brutally honest. Usually I sugar coat things a little, but to hell with it. Why should I give them a decent review when they did nothing to help me whatsoever? Thankfully their report doesn't affect my grades in anyway.

I pity any child that has the misfortune to attend that establishment.

So sorry for the rant guys, but I needed to get this out. I literally sat in my car and cried for ten minutes after leaving there today (I'm usually not that emotional, so for me to cry like that was quite unexpected haha). Partially in frustration from the report, and partially from the relief of never needing to go back to such an un-welcoming place.

Thankfully it's over now, and I will never need to go back again. Plus I ended the day with Jajangmyeon and soju =D

I'm so sorry to hear that you've had such a horrible time in the last 3 weeks. *hugs*
I can totally feel you, I've had similar experiences when I did some volunteer work at the local hospital a year ago. We had to look after the children and play with them, although most of them didn't even want to leave their room. Yet, when we couldn't find any kid who fancied playing with us, the staff reprimanded us because we didn't do our job. It's always the best when people don't tell you what exactly you need to do and when you do the right thing (in my case, not dragging them out of their room and getting into a fight with their parents who wouldn't let them do so), they yell at you and become furious when they don't have the right to be furious.
Anyway, it's such a relief that the report wouldn't affect your grades. I hope things will get better from now on. ^^ Cheer up, dear, it's finally over and better days are coming! <3
