FanFiction hate

I was browsing through a website and I came upon some people bashing and hating on fanfictions, some going to the length of not considering it a writing style. Saying things as writing fanfiction is not original, and they as 'writers' won't stand so low as to write anything fanfiction similar.

Seriously now?! I've really never knew there was so much hate against FanFiction. I think it's because since I started writing fanfics I've stopped going through personal opinions of other writers.

As a person who writes both FanFiction and original stories, and who only recently started writing fanfics (a year or so) I find it harder to write fanfictions to be honest. Since with original stories I can let my imagination run as wild as I want. Characters can be as I let them be, I form every detail of their personalities, looks, background stories and lives, manners of speech, likes and dislikes. Every single detail. But with FanFic, I have to take in consideration the fact that the personality I'm involving is predetermined. Their names, looks, personality. People who will be reading the FanFic about D.O for example will start reading with an already formed idea about how the main character's behavior will be, how they would react in certain situations. personally in my fanfics since I only write about BTS, I don't change their personalities, I need to focus more on the events and make the right choice of events to match the predetermined personalities of the members.

It might just be my opinion, but I also think FanFic's writing is more stressing.

I enjoy writing both FanFiction and original stories and it pains me to see people looking down on FanFiction writers.

Aren't we all writing as a way to express ourselves?

What's wrong with fanfictions? Its an expressive form of writing that people can still read and enjoy... I dont see the issue here. But, well, some people can be weird

i write fanfiction, my friend writes original stories. if you were to disregard whatever we were typing on our screens, and instead focus on and compare how we work when we write, we would practically be the same. fanfic and original writers both put the large amounts of effort and time into what they do. the only difference is that in original stories, you come up with everything, and in fanfiction, you use some elements from the original work. however, if you write fanfiction about band members/celebrities, all you take is their name, appearance, and maybe some elements of their personality. it doesn't make setting, plot development, and the amount of work you put into it less significant if you write fanfiction. those people are ridiculous. fanfics can be poorly written or edited, so can original stories. they obviously haven't found the good stories that transverse the fanfic/original story boundary and are just amazing pieces of literature.

I actually find it really funny when a people bash fanfiction and fanfiction writers because there are some pretty famous books that are actually fanfiction (and no, I'm not talking about Fifty Shades of Grey here, though that is one example). The first that always comes to mind is Paradise Lost by John Milton. It's practically fanfiction of the Bible. It has the same characters but with his own version of the story. It's the same with the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri; it's like a spin-off series with a self-insert by the author and his own OCs. Some people say that it's also a cross-over with other works and Greek Mythology. We also have other fanfiction works like The Three Musketeers and Romeo and Juliet! The point is why would it matter if it's original or fanfiction? Why would fanfiction be a problem? It's still a story that someone slaved over and practically built from the ground up (sure, there's already some foundation, but the rest is all original from the writer's head). Fanfic writers still have to build the setting, the characters, the dialogue, and such.

Some people are just that close minded that can't except the fact that people write fanfiction, it's probably because it's not usually officially published like other genres.

I mean, a lot of fanfiction is based off books which would make them less original because there's already a set in stone plot/setting, but when you're writing about a member of a band with your own plot (and it doesn't really need to be in their personality — honestly, just their name and their looks is all it takes), it's basically…original. Apart from using someone's name and face, everything else could most likely be your plot, your setting, your characters.
