TRAINEE LIFE + Charlie’s trainee life was like many other before her, was a challenging one. As SM’s trainee was in constant state of competition because she has to make up for her disadvantages in height and looks with her dynamic dances and rap skills. Because Charlie has little to no training other than singing karaoke, Charlie improved her rap in steadily gaining power and stability. It wasn’t all good either, because there are people and trainee of SM that doubts Charlie’s ability to make it in the k-pop industry due to her not fitting the idol image but Charlie ignores them and continue on with her training without any care what the other trainees were saying about her. Through her efforts, Charlie was able rise to the top tiers of trainees and manage to caught the interest of the higher ups when they were brainstorming for the line of the upcoming girl group despite not being a member of the SM Rookies.
PREDEBUT ACTIVITIES +
BACKGROUND +
Charlie has a relatively normal upbringing, she learns from a young age that whining won’t get you anywhere and if you want something you go to earn it, this is the main reason for Charlie’s reserved nature and perfectionist tendencies. By the age of 5, Charlie was admitted into a Ballet class mostly because her mother had always wanted her daughter to be a successful Ballerina and Charlie grew into teen hood with hopes that she would be able to fulfil her mother’s dreams. The turning of Charlie’s life of mediocre routine is when Charlie first met a mischievous boy named Robert Lee on the first day of school of second grade and the Batman and Robin dynamic was born.
As the years gone by, at the age of 13, Charlie was told that she would never join the big league of performing Ballet because of her short structure (she was around 142cm). despite the reassurance from her Father, she still has time to grow, Charlie already knew the truth of it when her fellow dancers were getting better roles because of their height and she was still given the background roles, this is when Charlie’s feelings of insecurity and self-criticism starts to emerged. Robert, being the good friend he is, tries his best to cheer Charlie up and get her back into her game. (this includes, taking her to eat junk food, no matter how she complains that it’s going to make her fat but proceed to eat 2 burgers and a plate full of fries. Karaoke, where she sings to all of her heart’s content and watched a marathon of cheesy Animes during the weekends, after finishing their homework, of course). It wasn’t until Robert drag her to meet up with his group of friends that Charlie finally starts being lively again. Robert had brought her to meet up with his Parkour jam, The Superfly Monkey Dragons. At first, Charlie was reluctant but after witnessing then ease and confidence that the traceurs move through the urban jungles of Singapore, Charlie managed to get herself hooked and love every single second of the adrenalin rush it provide.
This goes on for the next two years with Charlie juggling in between of Ballet lessons and Parkour jams wasn’t easy but Charlie managed to balance the two activities together after getting used to it. Charlie’s mother starts to get suspicious after Charlie came home more bruised up than usual and with injuries that are not and couldn’t be from practicing Ballet. it was only after the neighbours starts talking about Charlie hanging around with a bunch of ‘street punks’ and running around doing dangerous stunts was when Charlie’s mother brought it up during the family dinner. Charlie argues that it doesn’t affects her studies or her Ballet lesson but her mother argues that it’s still dangerous and Charlie could get herself badly hurt. The deciding point was when her father agrees with her mother and for the fact that Charlie should stop either way because they were moving to Korea after Charlie’s father accepted a job offer there. Charlie was devastated, mostly because she had to lose the friends she made through the years and she had to leave Robert, her main pillar of support. Therefore, with a long and probably drag out goodbye, the Parkour jam went with for one last run and Robert giving her a matching star shape earring, one for her and one for him.
In Korea, despite enrolling into an international school, Charlie had time adjusting to the new culture and environment of Korea. Her grasp of the language was also so-so, relying more on her English even though, to her, half of the Korean population can’t speak it properly, much to her frustration and dismay. But to her eternal relief, Charlie met with Kang Yeon Soo and the both of them form an unconventional friendship with each other because of their somewhat clashing personality. after a year of living in Korea, the growing interest of group idols began to be a sensation to the younger generation and it also spark Charlie’s interest with the choreographed dances and up beat rhythm. Charlie had thought about performing on stage again (After quitting Ballet once she came to Korea because her parents want her to adjust first) and when SM launched a nationwide audition, with the support of her friends, somewhat reluctantly her mother and ever supportive father, Charlie went to her first audition. She failed though but Charlie wasn’t going to give up because the judges loved her dancing and it was just her song selection that doesn’t sit well with her voice range and so she tries again. After getting another round of encouragement from her family and friends, Charlie came for her second audition and she came back swinging. By 2011, Charlie was officially a SM trainee.
PERSONALITY +
Charlie is a very determine person, once she got her head into something, she will try her best to see it through until the end. She also has this uncanny ability to stay focus on any task given to her and is willing to make the necessary sacrifices needed to make it successful. She will not back down no matter what other people say about it in fact the more people discourage her the more she wants to succeed in it. Charlie is reliable. She is the kind of person that you can share your secrets with and she is always open to listen to you venting out your problems without needing to worry about her spilling the beans. She also regularly checks on her teammate’s well-being, making sure that they are okay and would gladly dote on them when she can. You can always count on her when the situation turns sticky or not to panic at the first sign of danger. Despite her somewhat mellow behaviour, Charlie does know how to have a good time. She is generous with her smiles and can be a bit silly from time to time, this is mostly with the reason to lighten up the mood and cheer people up. Charlie is also someone that likes to believe in the best in things, she would accept people or things as they are and doesn’t believe in judging someone by what they were or by what other people think of them because she would accept you just the way you are.
Regardless of how happy Charlie seems to be, she is not perfect, she is only human after all. Because of her tendency of wanting to get the job done efficiently, Charlie is somewhat of a perfectionist. She won’t stop until she get it right and often berates herself of not doing good enough. She would practice or train repeatedly even if it means cutting on her resting or eating time. Charlie is also a careless person, not in the sense that she is clumsy or absent minded but in the context that she is careless with her body’s wellbeing. In her search for perfection in her dances or rapping, Charlie would neglect taking care of her body and health. She would ignore her body’s protest and continue on practicing until she can’t move anymore and it won’t be the first time someone found her asleep in the practice room nor would it be the last. Her carelessness is not only a danger to herself but also to the people around her because in putting herself in situations that she could get injured, she could also risk injuring her band mates as well
In spite of how she tries to be positive and ignore what people think of her, Charlie is rather insecure. She would let her anxiety get the best of her and question her usefulness towards her group. She is also insecure of her own abilities to perform what her fans expected of her. When Charlie feels that everything is too much for her to handle, she would be withdrawn, her usual cheerfulness would dim and her would try to deal with her problems on her own because she doesn’t want other people to get involve. Lastly, another of one of Charlie’s negative trait is that she is naturally reserved. She has difficulty in openly admitting what she is feeling and rather than outright expressing what she feels, Charlie would often bottles everything inside and let it slowly eat her from the inside. Charlie also doesn’t make connections with people quickly. It takes her a long time to be fully comfortable with the people around her and because of this; she doesn’t seem to be emotionally invested in anything but her dances and music, even when she is close to someone there would be a small sense that she is holding herself back from fully expressing herself.
