Match From Heaven / Bái Qiū Huì's Wedding Date

"To love is to receive a glimpse of heaven."
-Karen Sunde

Faceclaim Wu Ying Jie (Gui Gui, Emma Wu).
Backup Zhang Xin Yuan.
Appearance
Qiu Hui loved to play outside when she was younger, tanning as a result, but as she got older, she stayed inside doing homework (not to mention she became aware that people favoured light-skinned people more) & so she has rather pale skin nowadays. She stands at 170 cm & weighs 50kg.
Style
She prefers comfy, simple clothes like t-shirts, tank tops, sweaters, jeans, & shoes with a bit of a heel (she can't resist a cute shoe). She refuses to wear sweatpants, yoga pants or leggings in public because she worries about people judging her as sloppy. The only time she'll ever wear a dress is when she's attending an important event because she feels that skirts inhibit one's ability to move freely (unless of course, that person doesn't mind flashing others). Her favourite colours to wear are blue, brown, white, black & pink. Living in China, Qiu Hui hated wearing socks so she would wear flats or open-heels as often as she could (mind you, she does have sneakers that are pretty comfortable too). The only jewellery that she wears daily is her jade Budda necklace - though she wouldn't say she's a hardcore Buddhis(from her parents) & her moonstone ring (a birthday present from her sister).

Character Nickname(s)
☁︎ 小月 "xiǎo yuè" (little moon) — rather than a regular cake for her birthday, Qiu Hui always demanded mooncakes instead. her parents thought it was funny because she was born on the Mid-Autmn Festival of 1989 which is also the Mooncake Festival. "mooncake" in Mandarin is 月饼 "yuè bĭng".
☁︎ 가을 "ga eul" (autumn) — the name that Qiu Hui's Korean co-workers know her by since her Chinese name is rather difficult to pronounce.
Birthplace Beijing, China.
Hometown Beijing, China.
Birthday 14/09/1989; Mid-Autumn Festival
Language(s)
☁︎ fluent Mandarin — her native language
☁︎ advanced Korean — Qiu Hui took Korean classes in university in China, then transferred to a univeristy in Korea when she was 23 & has been living there ever since.
☁︎ conversational English — she began learning English as an elective in high school & then took some classes in university but didn't take it as seriously as her Korean studies.

Personality
☁︎ traits — sympathetic, determined, serious, sensitive, suspicious, fickle
Qiu Hui is rather headstrong & determined woman & always has been. When she was younger & boys would tell her that girls couldn't do things she would just stare them down & say, "Watch me". Many innocent children can sympathize with someone when they're hurt - Qiu Hui took this to the max; she was careful with her material possessions, worried that she might "hurt" them.
"Stick-in-the-mud" is what many of her classmates would call her when she was younger because she always took everything so seriously - sarcasm would just go over her head. Despite the fact that she didn't seem to understand humour, Qiu Hui is quite sensitive; always worried that people don't like her & takes criticism to heart, sometimes even feeling like people are criticizing her character.
It probably came from her experience with children in her elementary school, but Qiu Hui is always cautious when interacting with people because her classmates usually only wanted to play with her when they wanted her to do their homework. Cliché, but she doesn't want to be taken advantage of. Qiu Hui is also very indecisive - she can't decide whether to get this or that for lunch or if she should move back to China or stay in Korea. Chances are, no matter what she ends up eventually choosing, she'll always question whether she made the right decision. It always annoys her friends & coworkers because her delayed decisions can make her late for deadlines.

Background
Qiu Hui was born & raised in Beijing, China with her younger sister, Qiu Yang. In elementary school, Qiu Hui was picked on for liking school & for her ugly bowl-cut hairstyle & the fact that her family had above-average-income (they weren't rich by any means). For high school, Qiu Hui attended a school that was farther from her home so that she wouldn't have to go to school with the same kids. By then, the emotional bullying had made her more closed-off so she didn't have many close friends but was on good terms with most of her classmates.
In the 12th grade, Qiu Hui met Zhang Zhiming who was rather nerdy & loved school just like her. Zhiming eventually asked her out & they dated for a few months. Once it came time to "introduce the boyfriend to the family" it didn't turn out well. Bai Yulin, Qiu Hui's mother, hated him. Once Zhiming had left, Yulin told Qiu Hui that he wasn't a good match for her, she needed higher standards - he didn't seem to have any interests aside from videogames, he didn't have a part-time job, & though he liked school, his prospects for the future as a civil engineer weren't good enough for Yulin.
Though Qiu Hui didn't want to give up the one person who had taken an interest in her, she knew her mother was probably right - she had her daughter's best interests at heart, right? Qiu Hui broke up with Zhiming the next day. Of course, he was heartbroken & Qiu Hui felt really bad but she knew he wasn't the right one for her.
Qiu Hui graduated at the top of her class & won a scholarship to study at Beijing Foreign Studies University where she began to take Korean. Of course, her parents were disappointed that she wanted to get a degree in Korean rather than getting a PhD, education degree or a law degree, but they accepted that it was what she wanted to do, all the same. After 2 years at BFSU, Qiu Hui applied to become an international student at Ewha Womans University. Though Qiu Hui had worked while attending university, she still didn't have quite enough money to be able to pay for tuition for an international student, but for living expenses as well. Qiu Hui's parents struck a deal with her - if she majored in a science as well as Korean, they would pay her tuition. Qiu Hui eagerly agreed, signed up for computer science & moved to Korea. It was difficult for her to make friends but once she got a hang of the language she was able to get a job at a coffee shop just outside of the university. That was where she met a coworked named Bang Aejung who was an English major. Her goal was to become a translator for people wanting to travel to & from Korea from English-speaking countries.
After the two girls graduated, they were able to get a job at a company called Nu Seol Translations which helped with short-term translating jobs. Aejung got a job as a translator for different jobs such as English translations for monument signs around Seoul & helping people travel to & from Korea. Because of her computer science degree, Qiu Hui often would find herself managing people's multilingual websites or apps, translating between Chinese, Korean & occassionally English.

Love Interest Ok Taecyeon
Backup Im Hyunsik
Nickname(s)
☁︎ none — Qiu Hui doesn't know him that well at first & then his name isn't easy to make into a nickname.
Birthplace Busan, South Korea
Hometown Bedford, USA
Language(s)
☁︎ fluent English — Taecyeon spent 7 years in the US going to school & so he had to become fluent.
☁︎ fluent Korean — his native language
☁︎ advanced Japanese — he studied Japanese in university, hoping to get a translating job in Japan but found that translations for English were more in demand & so he doesn't keep up with his Japanese as much.

Personality
☁︎ traits — loyal, organized, hardworking, awkward, hot-headed, impatient
Taecyeon makes friends carefully, not wanting to have shallow friendships, so once he's you're friend, he'll go to great lengths to help you out. Since he works with many large companies that need translators, he needs to be organized in his everyday life to keep it all together. He has a folder for everything, his house is full of organizational tools such as baskets or jars & keeps everything neat & tidy. Taecyeon is always working to improve himself, whether that's working out or studying harder to become more fluent in any language he speaks. Unfortunately, Taecyeon is awkward around women when it's a casual setting. He hasn't gone on a date in years because he gets tongue-tied when there's a pretty woman around him & he gets clumsy. When things aren't just so Taecyeon can lose his cool, sometimes raising his voice at people. He's not very good at hiding when he's annoyed & people can get uncomfortable - he's a pretty intimidating guy once you factor in the fact that he's quite tall. Because he's always working to improve, he can get impatient, things need to be quick & when they're not, that can cause the annoyance.

Background
Taecyeon was born in Busan & lived there until he was 10. His parents wanted a change in scenery & thought it would be good for him & his older sister to learn English so they all moved to Bedford, USA. After graduating high school, Taecyeon decided that he wanted to return to Korea & applied to universities. He got into Korea University & lived in the dorms there until he graduated & got a job with Nu Seol Translations, specializing in diplomatic translations such as between governments, international companies & government documents. He signed up for Heaven's services because his parents are pressuring him to find a nice girl & bring her home - he's 27, after all. He doesn't go the natural dating route because he's so busy with his work (the burdens of a perfectionist) but also because he has trouble approaching girls in a casual setting, fearing rejection. Taecyeon hopes that he meets a girl who is marriage material so that he can finally settle down & get his parents off his back in the process.

Trivia
☁︎ sports — loves wakeboarding & skiing
☁︎ chef — Taecyeon is quite good at cooking, always posting food on his social media & whether he's eating out or if he's made his own masterpiece.
☁︎ education — Taecyeon graduated from Korea University with a degree in International Development & Cooperation
☁︎ nerd — Taecyeon is a total chess-nerd & even has his own glass set.
☁︎ 2PM — Taecyeon used to be a part of a singing/rapping group that would practice every week at 2PM (which became the name) when everyone was done classes. They participated in some university competitions & won a few of them. He has kept in touch with them all but they don't really meet up to sing & rap since they all have careers now & most of the others are married.
☁︎ wishful thinking — Taecyeon loves animals & would love to have a cat but he's always so busy that having any animals in his life would be difficult.
☁︎ early bird gets the worm — an early riser even on the weekends - Taecyeon doesn't want to waste any daylight.

Family
☁︎ sister — Bái Qiū Yáng — Huáng Yīlín — 25
Qiu Hui was a difficult older sister when the pair were younger - Qiu Hui didn't want to play with her. After the pair had been together for a few months, Qiu Hui finally accepted this little stranger into her life & the pair became inseparable. They would tell each other secrets that they would keep from their parents. They keep in touch through WeChat & video calls every day.
☁︎ mother — Bái Yùlín — Gǒng Lì — 52
Between her father & mother, Qiu Hui probably got along best with her mother but mostly because Qiu Hui let her mother dictate her life. She always did what her mother wanted her to do & didn't question it. After she moved away to Korea, she finally got the separation she needed. Her mother is proud that her daughter is in a relatively successful company & sometimes visits Qiu Hui during the holidays.
☁︎ father — Bái Huǒjīn — Wú Xiù Bō — 54
Qiu Hui's father was more mellow & was like Qiu Hui & did pretty much everything Yulin wanted him to do. When it came to school work, Qiu Hui & her father always clashed because he was rather controlling about that & Qiu Hui, being sensitive, always took it as a hit to her character.

Friends
☁︎ former classmate — Lùhán — 26
Luhan was the popular soccer player who would always talk about Manchester United. Qiu Hui & the rest of the people in her class would all say that Luhan was as nice as could be & he was smart too, beating Qiu Hui's grades a few times. Qiu Hui always wondered what ever happened to Luhan.
☁︎ friend — Zhāng Yànyù — Zhèng Shuǎng — 26
Back in high school, Qiu Hui & Yanyu were best friends. Yanyu was the first person to introduce Qiu Hui to kpop. Super Junior debuted in their sophmore year in 2005, Big Bang in 2006 & Girls Generation in 2007; Yanyu loved all of them. Qiu Hui didn't really get into kpop until about 2012; after she'd moved to Korea but then she finally had that in common with Yanyu. The girls still chat over WeChat & video chats. Yanyu is a computer scientist for a large company in China & always bemoans the fact that there aren't any cute guys in her department.
☁︎ coworker — Bang Aejung — Lee Yeonhee — 26
The pair are as thick-as-thieves & tell each other everything. There was a point where Aejung had a boyfriend & almost pushed Qiu Hui out of her life but the pair remained best friends. The girls are closer than ever now, vowing to not let a guy get in between them. Whenever Aejung's work takes her out of Seoul for more than a couple days, the girls will video chat. Aejung is the only person that knows about Taecyeon & Qiu Hui's deal. She thinks it's ridiculous because they obviously like each other & they're both rather lonely. Aejung & Qiu Hui have been roommates since university.

Others
☁︎ bro-in-law — Liam Shields — Carter Jenkins — 24
Qiu Yang met Liam when she went to university overseas in Vancouver to study to become a nurse. He's just graduated with a degree in accounting & is an easy-going guy. Qiu Yang's parents love him but are sad that they're going to live in Canada together after they're married (even though the wedding is in China). Liam is the sweetest guy to Qiu Yang which makes sense since they've been dating for 5 years.
☁︎ ex — Zhāng Zhìmíng — Lǐ Yìfēng — 27
Zhiming was nice to Qiu Hui while they dated but really, he didn't have the highest aspirations. He liked school but he loved playing videogames even more. His plans for university were to become a civil engineer. He was also a bit of a mama's boy - a little spoiled & often got his way. Qiu Hui is dreading meeting him because she knows that he probably wasn't the best match for her.

Interview
☁︎Hello, and welcome to Match From Heaven! Tell me about yourself and why you chose my lovely services. I'm actually in a bit of a tight spot, my sister is getting married & I don't have a date to her wedding. I know, "it's not a big deal to go alone" but it is a big deal because my younger sister is getting married & my parents expect that I've met someone by now!
☁︎ Is there an ideal partner you've dreamed about? I don't really have an ideal partner except that I want him to be serious about me & be someone my parents would be proud to call their son-in-law. What does that mean? It means that he has to have a good job, work ethic, be doting, have a car, a house, the usual Asian parent requirements.
☁︎What kind of relationship are you looking for? Be as specific as you'd like! Right now, I'm not actually looking for a relationship but I need this guy to be able to act very close with me - casual hand-holding & the like. I haven't really had many relationships so I don't really know what kind of relationship I want.
☁︎Do you believe in any kind of love at all? I do. I believe in familial love, love between friends & romantic love. If you've ever seen my sister & her fiance together, you'd know that romantic love absolutely exists (no wonder she's getting married before me).
☁︎Anything I should absolutely know before finding your match? Absolute no-gos, parent issues, any kind of baggage I should be aware of? Parent issues are definitely at the top of the list - my parents will put this guy under the microscope. Honestly, it's not because they think no one is good enough for their darling daughter, it's because my 1st boyfriend turned out to be a total loser (in other words, they think my standards are too low). Speaking of ex-boyfriends, there also happens to be a high school reunion the same week as my sister's wedding so he'll probably meet my ex-boyfriend too. Lastly, he should know that is not on the table. At all. I'm aual so it's not going to happen. Honestly, this is one of the main reasons I'm afraid to get into a relationship - I feel like most guys won't understand my needs.

First Meeting
Ideal: Qiu Hui trusts Heaven but she's not so sure if everyone on Heaven's website is totally honest with their application so she would like to meet this "perfect" match in a public place for a first date like a coffee shop. If he's not a weirdo, she'd like to go over the boundaries of their "relationship".
Real: Qiu Hui actually has met Taecyeon before since they take the same subway line to get to work & then they work at the same company. Of course, they haven't spoken to each other once since Qiu Hui sticks to Aejung & Taecyeon has difficulties approaching pretty girls out of the blue unless it's purely for business. One day on their way to work, both get a notification on their phone that Heaven has found their perfect match. Unfortunately, when he goes to check his phone, the subway jerks as it slows down, causing him to drop his morning coffee in to Qiu Hui's lap just as she sees that Taecyeon is her perfect match.

Interactions
Taecyeon & Qiu Hui have a hot-&-cold relationship. They act like their relationship is just out of convenience but they actually like each other (think Kim Hyunji & Park Bongpal from Let's Fight Ghost). Taecyeon takes care of Qiu Hui in casual ways such as cooking for her, keeping things tidy, watching to make sure she's okay. After figuring out that they're perfect matches, they both make it clear that they only need a date to their own events, no developing felings because it might make things awkward. They set the boundaries at forehead kisses & hand holding but only while they're at these events since they don't want their "relationship" to interfere with their work. They agree that they need to at least be friends in order for them to pass as a couple so they go out on a few dates to get to know each other better. Though their both pretty serious people, they find that they can joke around a little bit together. Qiu Hui teases Taecyeon that he's such a nerd with large ears & Taecyeon teases Qiu Hui, saying that she's an obsessive kpop fan & foodie. They both take their deal seriously so they make an effort to be very couple-like for their classmates & family.

☁︎ aual — it wasn't until about the second last year of high school that other people in her grade began talking about . Qiu Hui honestly didn't have any interest in it. In 12th grade, when Zhiming first tried to kiss her, she realized that she didn't want to have anything to do with - it didn't make her feel fuzzy or excited, in fact, it made her feel sick & a little disgusted. Kissing was definitely off the table too. No one except Aejung knows - everyone else thinks that Qiu Hui is just waiting until marriage. Eventually, Qiu Hui confesses to Taecyeon why she won't let him kiss her since she's aual because he's curious since most couples will kiss. Before Qiu Hui realizes that she likes Taecyeon, she finds herself wondering what it would be like to kiss him.
