APPEARANCE Relatively short when it comes to kpop standards and also on the heavier side of normal weight, some people were surprised that Hyukjae got to debut at all. Also his upper lip is pretty thin, which again doesn't make him the prettiest in the buisiness. His body is nothing special, whether positive or negative, he doesn't have particularely defined abs, but he is skinny.

Most important to Hyuk's appearance is, that he has ice-blue eyes. People keep asking him where he got his contacts, but he's not actually wearing any, so whenever he gets that question, he just opens his eyes as far as he can and in his most epic tone of voice says "THEY ARE REAL". (However, when he's away from cameras and not doing anything promotional and he gets asked that question, he starts off by saying "You know, when a man and a woman love each other very much...". At this point the person ususally hurriedly interrupts him by saying that, no, they just wanted to know about his eyes. He grins at their uneasiness and says "I was just getting to that. So, when a man and a woman..." - "Yeah. I know. What about your contacts?" - "That's where I was going, thanks for interrupting me. This is my natural eye color. I got it from my Mom." and then he'll break into a -eating grin, laugh at their expression, rumple their hair and leave, all the while chuckeling manically to himself or outright laughing his off, dependant on his mood.)

STYLE Comfort is the most important thing. Also jeans. And hoodies. T-shirts, preferrably with band-logos or some gaming-reference. He also likes wearing the color blue, because it complements his eyes nicely, making him look good while also making it look not-on-purpose. At the dorm, he'll usually just walk around barefoot, because why not? Another thing he wears at the dorm a lot is his Toothless onsie (from How to Train Your Dragon). He's okay with most of the outfits the entertainment sticks him in, but he really doesn't like being shirtless. Also, despite his meh looks he never wears make-up unless they're going on camera. He doesn't get why he should. To him, his days indoors were usually spent with only family, friends and video games and none of them ever cared. Also, it's a bit of a you to the people that called him ugly when he was still a Trainee. He's actually really good with make-up though, because his childhood best friend, Daria always wanted to wear make-up, whether she was going out or not and when she was seventeen, she injured her right hand and insisted Hyuk learn how to do her make-up. So he did. And now he's just about phenomenal at it, even though he doesn't give a about the stuff unless he has to. Daria is also the one, who gave Hyuk his beloved Pokémon-beanie, that he wears everywhere as soon as the weather is remotely cold enough.

PERSONALITY

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Hyujae is generally optimistic until reality punches him in the face. He chooses to believe that everything he cares about will go well, and if it doesn't he'll just have to try harder. Because if you worry you might not have lost the battle yet, but you've definetely lost a lot of concentration. Hyuk smiles a lot and tries and when asked for serious advice he will most likely brighten up the room with his positive outlook, and if he can't he'll try and let you down as nicely as he can.

 

When life gives you lemons, make an army of lemons! Hyukjae is essentially a sarcastic piece of . He absolutely loves teasing and annoying his friends and laughs his off at their discomfort. They call him a sadist, as that is "a person who derives pleasure from the pain of others" and he can't really disagree. But he knows they love him anyway. And it's not like he'd actually truely harm anyone, it's just too much fun watching them rage at his Mario Maker levels or at the way he is the definition of anti-progress (except for the few things he takes seriously, namely animation and singing). He just doesn't care enough to take anything or anyone seriously - that old saying that life's a play must run in his blood, because Hyuk enjoys the out of it. Needless to say he annoys a lot of people along the way. A lot of them can't cope with his occasional childishness and constant trolling. Hyuk procrastinates often, because he's just more interested in a hundred things other than the thing he should be working on. His humor is not always as clean as most kpop stars', but he tries to tone it down whenever they go on camera, because despite his overly laid back attittude, he's actually terrified of letting others down.

 

When life gives you lemons, keep them. Cause hey... free lemons! The people he considers his friends are people he really cares about. He's there for them if they're ever in trouble or need a shoulder to cry on. He'll even put the mean side of his humor aside to be there for someone. The first thing he asks in return is, that the person makes him feel just as safe. Hyuk, too, wants a shoulder to cry on if he needs it. The second and last thing he wants is, that the person also wants to hang out when they're happy, because he feels kind of used otherwise. Hanging out with friends usually means playing video games and cuddeling (as long as the friend is comfortable with hugs) or going out (to play Pokémon GO). Along with being cuddely, Hyuk can also be absolutely adorable when he isn't laughing at somebody else's annoyance. He's especially cuddely and cute when he's  out of his mind with tiredness.

When it comes down to it, Hyukjae can be one of the politest and most professional people, he could probably conduct buisiness meetings, but he dislikes press conferences and things like that that require that level of professionalism from him. He feels uncomfortable and is just so booored.

 

 

 

 

BACKGROUND
When life gives you lemons, say "thank you" and give them back, if that's not what you want. On the twenty-second of June twenty-three years in the past a boy was born in Auckland, New Zealand. His new-zealand-native mother was an english teacher, his korean-born father was finishing dentistry school. They raised him to love video games, music and stories, his mother sang quite well and his father was a brilliant story-teller and all in all hyukjae had a very nice childhood. They didn't have a ton of money or a very big house or anything, but Hyukjae grew up happy and that was always the most important thing. He started drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil and well, at first it was jsut stupid sqiggles, but slowly it started getting better. Growing up in New Zealand, the Lord of the Rings had always been a title Hyuk had known, but he had no clue what the story behind it was. When he was four, he resolved to basically begging his dad to tell him about the story.

"Imagine you were in a restaurant, okay?", Kyunho said, "and you were just sitting at a table with your best friend and two of you other friends were at the bar, odering for all of you. Suddenly the door bursts open and somebody in a black cloak, somebody with stomping boots, somebody dangerous-looking comes in. This person goes up to the bar and asks 'Where is Son Hyukjae?' You do not want to be found. Whatsoever. And your friends, because they don't know any better, say where you are. Now you have this ring, that makes you invisible if you put it on - but it also makes it easier for your enemies to find you. Would you put it on?" Hyuk thought about this a lot over the next year and never stopped bothering his parents about it until they finally decided to let him watch the movies when he was five. It was love at first sight. Every holiday after that they went driving around the countryside, alone with each other, in bliss. Sometimes they took the neighbour's kid Daria Lilian along and she soon became Hyuk's best friend.

When Hyukjae was seven, his grandmother got ill and the family decided to move to South Korea to take care of him. Daria was the only person he stayed in contact with. Lost, Hyuk had to find his way anew, so far away from anything considered countryside, stuck in a huge, flourishing city. He was terrified. School brought him down, all the kids around him being so competitive and being pushed like hell, he felt quite forlorn. Strangely this was also where he began to develop his so-called sadistic side. He relished in other's discomfort (as long as it wasn't too serious), because, well honestly, he felt worse. So he laughed at their over-reacting. This would develop into proper humor over the years. Hyuk stopped taking things so seriously, partly as a defense mechanism, partly because he saw all these kids around him turning into success-driven clones of one another because they took everything so seriously. All in all, he felt so homesick. He began to sing at all times. He began to dabble in songwriting. Started digging through his mother's record collection in earnest, finding Pearl Jam, Nirvana and others. He found a home in their rage. It soon became evident, that he was an extremely talented singer, his parents got him singing lessons immedeately. Three years later he was resigned to never feeling at home in korean school and sensed that he was going to drop out before graduating. When he was ten his drawing had improved to the level of being really, really good (still improvable, of course). He was also an avid reader and one day, in his homesickness - by then reduced to a dull ache, like having you heart slowly stabbed with a blunt pencil, or like a low drone constantly in the background - he picked up the Hobbit. That book had so much homeliness and cheerfulness in it and was just home home home. It felt so right and he was happy again.

When he was almost thirteen, his singing teacher entered him in a competition and, seeing as singing was something Hyuk took very seriously, he did his best and nailed it. Second place, but he was scouted by a BigHit scout. His parents agreed to the contract only because Hyuk seemed extatic at the fact, that he could have the chance of being lifted out of the misery of school and of making a living from singing. He liked Kpop, but he was pretty pissed that the only two concepts girl groups can choose from are y and cute, because to him it felt objectifying, because it seemed so much more acceptable for guys to bring their own personalities. He swore himself to treat women in kpop with respect and be polite, which he does, without seeming awkward. Anyway, he joined BigHit. Here, too, there was fierce competition, but Hyuk could deal with it, because he cared. He excelled and the first two years, when he was fifteen it really looked as if he would debut early, maybe with seventeen? And then finally (still with fifteen), he dropped out of school, leaving that painful part of his life behind him.

This new-found luck and ambition didn't last very long... because when he was almost sixteen somebody told him, that he was too ugly to debut. He didn't believe it, until a company official told him. They told him he'd have to start dancing and learning japanese and rapping maybe or just get a ton of plastic surgery. But instead of feeling motivated, Hyukjae just felt betrayed. He stopped caring. He knew he could already sing and half-assed everything else. This was also the time he had the idea of trying to animate something video-game themed. So he did and it was pretty... okay. So he tried again. Animation became the thing he really cared about, training was just a thing he did, because his parents payed for it and because somewhere in the back of his head there was the wish to make a living as a singer. Then, with sixteen, he finally read the Lord of the Rings. He even went through with it on his first try, even though the beginning is rather nerve-wrenching. What did take more than one try was learning elvish. The next few years, he kept trying to learn, perfecting first quenya and then sindarin and practicing animation.

With his attitude of not taking things very seriously, he couldn't win the people at BigHit over, even if he had the voice of an angel. A rough angel, to be fair, but a beautiful voice none the less. When he turned twenty, he started songwriting for BigHit and he finally managed to find dancing fun. Which is Daria's fault. His best friend from New Zealand, that he was still in contact with? Yeah, she had befriended Jennie Kim while she had studied in New Zealand and stayed in contact with her over the years (not as much as with Hyukjae, but still). Daria had also become a dance instructor and together with her skill and her connection to Jennie, she got a position at YG and moved to Seoul. She got Hyuk dancing and even though she commented often that he was just awful (an exaggeretion), she saw how much fun he had and found it cute. So Hyuk just kind of did his thing until he was twenty-two and was told he was in the lineup for the next boy group that would debut the next year.

Hyukjae swears a lot. He tones it down/gets rid of it for shows and promotional activities but doesn't bother to censor himself on streams. Also he almost always swears in english, but when he gets really enraged he'll swear in elvish. Because somehow "go french-kiss an orc" is more insulting to him than "go yourself son of a ". For some reason.

Hyuk stays up late a lot because he keeps going at animation and drawing despite not having much time now that he's debuted. On the other hand, if he's tired/been on a bad sleep scedual, he'll fall asleep in two minutes. If you wake him up in the middle of deep sleep and ask him a question (anything, really) he will crack an absolutely awful and completely unrelated pun that is insanely funny only because it's so out of the blue in that situation and goes right back to sleep within a second.

 

TRIVIA 

He posts a lot of drawings, doodles and elvish on twitter. His followers have learned that *Losto vae means sleep well, that Le melin is I love you for people you don't know that well (this is the one that he posts a lot) and that he's saving Gi melin for the person he will spend the rest of his life with. (And yes, they also know that he has not yet found that person, so they can still feel special.) Sometimes, if he can find the time, he does art streams on Twitch, taking drawing requests or working on animation.

He likes fanfiction. He reads it when he has nothing better to do. If he reads a fluffy or a sad fanfic, he will look for that person and drown them in cuddles and just hold them for quite a while. He made the mistake of reading an fanfic about him and another member once and could not keep a straight face whenever he ran into that person for a good week. After bursting out laughing repeatedly on national television (they could cut it all to make it fit) he had to promise everyone to never ever read fanfiction ever again. And he's actually kept his promise.

He loves making sadistic mario maker levels and putting his friends throught the torture of playing them. And if he really loves that friend he might give them a hint. He also twitch-streams that sometimes.

Hyukjae's favorite food is pancakes. Because why the not?

Hyuk's favorite band is Pink Floyd, because even the biggest troll can get serious sometimes.

Just in case you didn't know yet: his favorite movies are the Lord of the Rings movies. He loves the books, too and wants to read the Simarillion as soon as he finds the time. Hyukjae actually found out he was biual, because he had crushes on Frodo, Eowyn, Aragorn at various times in his life.

His favorite color is pink, because pink is such a happy color. Nothing can happen to you if pink.

He joined Team Instinct in Pokémon GO, because as the underdog they don't get enough love.

He's a huge fan of Lee Hi and really wants to sing a duet with her someday.

He loves Terry Pratchett's books and owns the complete radio series of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

She puts up with the fact that he draws on her arms whenever he doesn't have a notebook handy and he puts up with the fact that she still forces him to do her makeup whenever she can get away with it. Sometimes she even puts up with his Mario Maker Levels and then he puts up with literally kicking him in the ribs in her sleep somehow. Because she takes forever to beat the level/give up and it got too late for her to go home so she crashes in his bed. When he joined Team Instinct, they pretended to be mad at each other and didn't talk for a week.

° [ Kang Chaerin] Friends/ 22/ Idol/ So this all started when this little nerd here decided to walz into the BigHit building wearing his brand new Pokemon beanie in 2010. And this random girl, whom he later remembered to be called Chaerin, basically flipped out when she saw him. And he responded just as enthusiastically, albeit a little weirded out. She was a new Trainee at the time, whereas he had been around for four years at the time and eveyone kinda knew who he was, but she had up until that point never really noticed him. Basically they launched into a huge discussion about video games until she realised she was late for a vocal lesson and ran off. It could've ended there, but he approched her with printed out examples on why exactly the colorpalette of a game matters so much to the game feel. After that they hung out a lot, at least as much as their very different sceduals allowed. She was a good influence on him, keeping him a little more focused on the dream of debuting, while he managed to lighten her mood a little when she was scared that she'd never be able to debut and doing his best to keep her out of harm's way when she was depressed. 

° [ The Handsome but can't do (based on the one app that is written for this character)] Friends/ ??/ idol/ They got along quickly, as they are both the trainees that excel in a certain field and are medicore at best in everything else. The handsome but can't do is relatively insecure so Hyukjae decided early on to seldomly complement the other on his looks, as he gets those compliments a lot and might even see them as a reminder that he isn't that good at anything else. So Hyuk comlements him on even the smallest improvement on his other skills.  He is also is a little more careful with his trolling humor than usual. If he feels he's gone too far and hurt the other he will feel bad about it, but because he feels that he can never really express his feelings properly when he ties to just talk, the handsome usually just finds one of Hyuk's signature self-drawings with a sad expression and the words "I'm sawy", "Forgive me?" or sometimes even "Goheno nin" (Sindarin for Forgive me.) scrawled beside it in a failed attempt at neat handwriting. When he looks up from the picture and catches Hyuk's eye, he's greeted with a soft and slightly rueful smile.

° [ Tobias Liebenthal] Bandmates/ ??/ idol/ This guy's an . Hyuk just doesn't know it. Well, he knows mischevious motives when he sees them, but he doesn't know how bad and for lack of a better word evil Toby is. So he never pays it much attention. Toby finds it relatively infuriating that another member in the band can speak a language that is basically his own (latin vs sindarin/quenya), but other than that they never really have much against each other. Hyukjae will have a bit of a problem with Toby when he finds out how he treats women and about that "Idol Olymp" list or whatever it's called.

° [ Jennie Kim] Best friend's good friend / 19/ idol (BlackPink)/ He met her once with Daria and it was fun to hang out, but they haven't found the time to do it again and on top of that they would have to coordinate it with Daria as well, because hanging out as just the two of them would be way too awkward at this point. They've texted a bit and talked on the phone once or twice. He likes her music taste based on the shirts she wears in BlackPink performances, but he hasn't found the courage to ask her if she chooses them or if the entertainment just wants to make her look edgy. On the phone he made a joke, that she would also join Team Instinct that they would rule Seoul together and she said she would do it, but again he hasn't been brave enough to ask if she went through with it. 

 

PERSONA [ Adorable Troll ]  He sings like an angel and can be the most polite and sweet cutie, but behind blue eyes lies a glint of dark and most of all annoying amusement.

FANCLUB [ Hantanyel] This is the quenya word for thank you. Hyukjae posted it on twitter after Black Dragon's live debut and the fans - virtually nobody haveing a clue what it meant - quickly adopted it as their fanclub name. Personally Hyuk finds it stupid yet endearing and he often says it's silly but he loves the fact that he gets to thank his fanbase everytime he mentions them.

TRAINEE YEARS & EXPERIENCE [  ten ] 

Yeah. Hyukjae started training when he was 13. So? GDragon started training with YG when he was twelve, didn't he? Well, the thing is, GD debuted when he was eightteen. There's a difference. Now... why exactly has Hyuk not debuted earlier? Why was his angelic voice not part of BTS or that of a solo artist? First of all, his looks set him back a good year at least. Short, no abs and a thin upper lip aren't the most marketable and, let's face it, that's what a big part of this industry's about. Then, his dancing isn't the best. And his rapping... umm, yeah. Nobody knows how good he'd be if he took the damn thing seriously for once. Probably not very good, but his attitude set him back quite a while. Hyuk putting japanese behind elven languages and never taking anything too seriously, the entertainment was very cautious to release this huge troll on the world. But eventually they found his weakness. They found out that he had a friend among the trainees, an actual friend he cared about. A friend, whom they were considering debuting in their upcoming boygroup. The way to gain control over Hyuk was clear: debut him in a group alongside his friend and let his fear of letting said friend down push him to unknown heights. Hyukjae is almost pissed at how well it worked.

TALENT TWIN 
[ Eddie Vedder] Okay, so it's a bit of a rock voice. But it's a good voice.soft  | rough | emotional
[ About that...] There is no one who raps like Son Hyukjae. He is absolutely legendary and nobody can get on his level. Down on his level, that is. He raps like Eunhyuk and Leeteuk sing "y back". Mumbeling everything he doesn't know how to do, not even bothering to use words and never, for the life of him taking anything seriously. Needless to say, TV shows absolutely love him.
[ Arin Hanson] He can do the moves, he just doesn't look incredibly professional about it. But confidence and the fact that he radiates just how much fun he's having and how in the dance he is, always manage to carry him through and the fans think he's actually pretty cute. So there. (Actually the fact that a few female Trainees said it was cute and endearing at some point probably helped him get a lot closer to debuting...funny story.)

COMMENTS/QUESTIONS  I know this is all very detailed, I hope I didn't go overbord... If you think the dancing twin isn't good enough or if you aren't happy with Eddie's voice, that's fine, I'll look for another one. The thing with Arin is, that I could only find people who were too good or really really bad and I figured with Arin you can at least see the passion and he takes the time to do expressions while dancing and his personality just shines through so much, so maybe you'll be okay with it? If not that's fine I can change it ;) (I don't know if you know the Game Grumps (Arin is also one of them), but Hyukjae's based off Ross, hopefully not too much so.) And I'm sorry that the rapping twin isn't a twin, but I figured since he didn't rap anyway...?

SCENE REQUESTS  This is really just a suggestion, doesn't have to be, but maybe Toby could try and "get" Daria, she could start liking him and as part of his plan, Toby would have to "get Hyukjae out of the way". Cause I mean they sleep in the same bed and all. So Toby tries and makes Hyuk as uncomfortable as possible, which causes some tension even on camera. Basically at some point they both can't stand each other anymore. The fans misinterpret the tension as ual and Hyuk gets tweeted a link to a fanfic, that he's too stupid to realise is before it's too late and he might as well finish it. As a result Toby pretty much has to give up trying to get under his skin, because as soon as he even looks at the older, Hyuk just bursts into fits of giggles for a week and a half. Eventually Hyuk sees Toby's list and warns Daria, saying that she can pursue Toby if she wants to and that if it works that's great and if it doesn't he's there for her and they'll get her through it.
