Jung Jaemi

The Director

May 22, 1986 / age 30

Character Nickname(s)
Jay— It's a short version of her name in English. Her mother started calling her this when she was a child and others followed suite as she grew older.
Drama Queen— Her parents started calling her this when she was four and putting on little plays and shows in their backyard or in the living room.

Birthplace Jinhae, South Korea
Hometown Seoul, South Korea
Language(s)
Korean— native language
English— home language (her mother is American, so she learned it from her mother. She uses it at home and when she visits her grandparents.)
French— She only knows enough to sing and read a little bit. Since some of her favorite musicals are centered in France, she tried to study it in high school, but she wasn't very good at it. So, she only knows how to sing her favorite songs and read a little bit. She can say some words and phrases well, but there is no way she could hold an actual conversation with anyone French. She loves putting French words into her English and Korean sayings.

Faceclaim Su Kyung
Backup (You'll need to put a backup, but you don't need to put as many links as I did in my above example. I did this for myself as reference later. You only need one for the faceclaim and one for backup.)
Appearance
Her hair is naturally curly from her mom's side of the family and she usually leaves it that way. She'll straighten every  now and then, like if she needs it straight for a play or for promotions, live performances, etc for The Starlets. Otherwise, she keeps it natural. However, she does dye her hair a reddish shade. She likes how her complexion looks against the red hair and thinks it softens her features, drawing more attention to her face than the rest of her body.
She wears foundation, eyeliner and mascara on a regular basis (even at home). When she wants to look nicer, she wears blush and lipcolor and maybe a eyeshadows. Obviously for stage or group performances, her makeup looks much more dramatic and she is more liberal with her makeup choices.
She keeps her body fit by exercising often. However, she feels very self-conscious about her abdomen and her chest. Even though she knows she is fit, she cannot help but remember a time when she was not and she nevers feels completely comfortable in her skin.
She has double piercings on her ears. She has no tattoos. No scars either.

Style
Jaemi has a pretty diverse wardrobe and likes a variety of styles. She attributes this to her "theatrical" side. She is just as comfortable in a dress and heels as she is with jeans and sneakers. She secretly likes the way her legs look and views them as her best feature, so she rather enjoys wearing shorts, skirts, and dresses. She also really likes off-the-shoulder or cut-out shoulder tops since she feels comfortable with showing off that part of her skin. She gets a little uncomfortable about her abdomen and her chest because of how she was teased when she was younger, and usually stays away from clothes that show too much of either. However, for The Starlets activities and performances and her acting career, she will wear whatever she has to without complaint since that is part of her job; however, internally she is dying and would love to run and grab the nearest giant poncho to cover herself.
When she goes swimming, she prefers to wear a one-piece or a high waisted suit with a more modest tankini if she is swimming alone (though she will throw on a T-shirt over it anyone else shows up).

For formal wear, she does have several different black and white dresses of various lengths and styles for special events and promotions held for plays, musicals, and her new group's activities.
She also likes wearing a lot of vintage-y type of clothing. Some of her dresses and tops have that inspirtation to them. Lace and crocheted items are also included in this. She loves those details.
She likes to dress very casually and comfortably for training and when she exercises.
At home, she likes dressing a little more comfortably and will wear simple shirts and shorts or sweater dresses around her apartment/ dorms in the winter.
She also likes wearing graphic tees of her favorite fandoms, but will cut them and turn them into other types of tops (off the shoulder, cold shoulder, v-neck, back v, etc. You name it. She loves cutting t-shirts and making them more stylish.) When she's sleeping, she can't stand wearing sweats or pajama pants. They make her feel as if she were being trapped because of the way they wrap around her skin. She has to wear camisoles or T-shirts and shorts .

Personality
• traits — hard-working, perfectionist, dorky, forth-coming, stubborn, distrustful , intuitive, self-conscious
Jaemi is a hard-worker, always striving to do her best. She has a lot of passion and energy, dedicating a lot of her time outside of rehearsals to perfect her abilities (praciticing dance choreographies, rehearsing scenes, singing the songs, etc). (During her first musical in her Freshman year of high school, she struggled with one of the dance numbers. Frustrated with her performance, she went home that night and practiced the dance over and over in her room until 2 a.m., when she felt it was flawless.) When she was in school, she had to work hard to maintain her 'A' grade average in the midst of doing plays and performances and keeping up a healthy lifestyle.

However, her tendency to be a perfectionist causes her problems. She sometimes thinks that she can handle more than she ought and becomes frustrated with herself and begins to doubt her abilities. Also, with her dedication, comes a certain puzzlement and irritation when she meets those that don't give their all to their art. If she feels that a fellow cast member is lacksidaisical , it grates on her nerves. (For example, during dancing rehearsals for a performance of "Cinderella", her dance partner wasn't focusing because he was too busy flirting with another dancer. So, Jaemi snapped at him for him to focus, which caused some frustrations on his part and ended with the two of them irritated at each other the rest of the rehearsal that day.)

She is rather spunky and adventurous, always curious to explore new places and things.
She is rather dorky and loves to goof around and have fun and always loves a good, playful banter. She really loves to just be quirky and enjoy herself. (When she goes out hiking with friends, she loves exploring new areas and things. She will often find an unusual tree or a large rock and climb up, posing in some random pose for the fun of it.)

She is very forth-coming on a lot of thngs, instilling in others trust in her since she is so honest. However, her tongue  can be a bit sarcastic at times.

She is stubborn. When she feels that she in the right, she has a hard time backing down. She is also distrustful and suspicious. If someone has seriously wronged her, she struggles to "forget" them. She can forgive, but really cannot forget easily. (See background for more info.) If she has been hurt by them in the past, what prevents them from hurting her now? Because of this mentality, she has a hard time putting her trust in others easily.

She does not really share with others her true feelings or even things in her past that are painful for her to relate. Even though she is very forthright on a lot of things about herself, she never lets anyone see into her deeper feelings. Since she is so skilled in acting, she has no problem masking her real feelings if the situation requires it.
She is not an easy crier either. She will not let anyone see her tears, unless it is for the stage.

Studying people and characters has caused her to be intuitive and discerning when it comes to situations and others. She can often pick up on other people's thoughts just based on their body language. (However, when it comes to those whom she does not trust, her mind buzzes with two conflicting views of the person if what she is discerning runs contrary to her firm belief. This causes a lot of confusion and frustration since she is so stubborn and distrustful. She has a hard time coming to grips with the fact that she may be wrong. ) She does care a lot for others and will go out of her way to comfort or help someone if she notices that they are unwell or not themselves. It is not uncommon for her to drag her family or friends to a coffee shop or out to the park or anywhere else she can think of to get them out of their current state of mind and cheer them up.

Background
(Trigger warnings regarding divorce and what led to the family breakup , school bullying and harrassment over weight and body image)

Jennifer McCoy, Jaemi's mother, grew up in Jinhae after her family moved from the United States  to South Korea when her father was stationed at the American naval base there. When she was in her early 20's, she met Jung Youngchul, a young naval officer in the Korean navy. The two fell in love and eventually married.

Jung Jaemi was born on May 22, 1986 to Jung Youngchul and Jennifer. Her mother named her "Jaemi" because she always liked the English named "Jamie" and thought it would be a cute way to have an English sounding Korean name. Jaemi's early childhood years were relatively carefree. She  had two siblings born after her with whom she loved to play with. She loved singing at a young age and enjoyed putting on little shows and dances for her parents.

However, when she was six things started to take a turn for the worse in her family. She did not quite understand what was going on, but her father would not return home from the base very much and his temper became less docile. After three years of trying to make things work with little result, Jaemi's mother decided that it was time for change and a divorce was put into the works.

Jaemi, being the oldest, tried to be strong for her younger siblings, but struggled internally. She did not know how to cope with her new circumstances and began to eat more and more in a subconcious effort to deal with the emotional upheaval she was facing. This led to her being overweight in elementary school. During this time, she began to take more of an interest in singing and began singing more often to distract herself from the family breakup. She loved writing lyrics and making up her own songs. She began to dream of becoming a singer on stage.

When she entered middle school, things worsened for her socially. Due to her weight, she was teased and harrassed. One of the instigators, a boy named Jang Hyunwoo, was especially cruel to her. He would often gather his friends with him and surround Jaemi outside of the girls' locker room before and after gym class. They would circle around her so that she could not escape. No matter how many times she told them to stop or tried to run away, they would push her back into the center of the group. They poked and prodded her, calling her a pig or a cow. A few times, Hyunwoo went so far as to grab her shirt and try to lift it to show everyone just how 'fat' she was. Usually, he was prevented by her screaming and hitting him to try to draw the attention of any of the teachers and he and his friends would run away before they could get caught. However, one day he succeeded in lifting her shirt and lifted it even higher than intended. His friends all burst out laughing, jeering at her for having a chest that was too small for a 'normal' girl and looked riculous on such a 'fat pig'.  Mortified and humiliated, the poor girl ran home, crying alone in her bedroom for the rest of day.

She hated what everyone thought of her, how everyone seemed to view her. She wanted people to see another side of her. She wanted to be known not by how she looked, but for herself or at least something else about her.

The harrassing continued for some time until her last year in middle school when the end-of-the-year talent show came around. Wanting to prove her worth, she signed up to perform a song and dance. She practiced and practiced, and when the talent show arrived, she took the stage with an air of confidence. However, nothing could have prepared her for what happened: Even though her voice was strong and her notes on key, they laughed. Her dance moves were correct, but they jeered. It wasn't her lack of talent, it was her looks. They were making fun of her weight again. She walked out the auditorium dejected when Hyunwoo approached her. Laughing, he said, "I never thought I'd see a pig dance on stage! I was laughing so hard by all that fat rolling around that I couldn't hear your singing!"

Devastated, Jaemi cried in front of the mirror that night, cursing her appearance. She wanted so badly to be recognized for ther talents, but all anyone saw was her weight. Staring at her reflection, she swore that she would change and make it on stage one day.

For the remainder of the year and through the following summer, she took on a rigorous schedule of exercise and training. She ate healthier. In addition to bodily training, she took on the task of training for the stage. Her family could not afford any sort of classes, so in exchange for doing the dance teacher's yardwork and cleaning the dance studio, she began attending dance classes. She borrowed books from the library on how to train her vocal chords and applied what she learned accordingly. She listened to many songs and artists, learning their vocal exercises and their techniques. She also taught herself how to rap, drawing inspiration from a variety of artists. By the time summer ended and her freshman year began, she had lost a lot of weight and looked quite different. She had really improved in her talents, but she still had a long way to go.

Shocked by her new appearance, some students questioned how she had lost so much weight in so little time and began spreading rumors that she had resorted to surgery and was also bulimic. Though she was still not quite comfortable with herself or her appearance, Jaemi resolved not to let what anyone else was saying dampen her determination. She was going to excell in everything that she could and she would prove her worth to all of them. She joined theatre and choir, continued to 'train', and kept up on her studies, receiving nothing less than an A in every class. She tried out for a part in the school play and got a supporting role. She received another supporting role when the school musical came about later in the year. When the talent show came, she entered that as well, singing a rap song to show her skills in that area.

She was so focused on excelling in everything that she failed to see that her classmates had ceased teasing and harrassing her until auditions for the musical came up mid-way through her sophomore year. When call-backs began, Jaemi found herself partnered with Hyunwoo, who had taken a liking to theatre. Things were awkward at first between them. Hyunwoo constantly seemed be on the verge of wanting to say something to Jaemi, but was too nervous to. Jaemi just kept focused on rehearsing their lines, outwardly pretending that she could care less about whom she was partnered with and it was just a part of the job, though inside she was a complete wreck. She could not stop thinking about all that he had done to her and she felt very insecure and small in front of him, like a timid mouse standing in front of a large predatory falcon who was ready to attack. Despite their internal conflicts, the two were able to put on a great act and ended up not only passing the auditions, but also snatching the main roles as love interests. Rehearsals commenced and the two were forced to work together. As time passed, Jaemi found herself relaxing more around him, but she constantly kept up a wall of indifference toward him so as not to get hurt again. She did not dare trust him. One day, after rehearsals, Jaemi left the girls' dressing room and found Hyunwoo waiting outside. Her heart started pounding, remembering all those times he had harrassed her outside of the locker room in middle school. Hyunwoo spoke, apologizing for his actions in middle school. He then asked if they could start over as friends. Hesitant at first, but wanting to make amends, Jaemi agreed.

They continued on as friends for quite some time, until he wanted to take another step in their relationship; a date. She had come to like him, but could not accept his feelings. Not only that, but she ended their friendship. Though she had forgiven him, she could not forget had happened. She distrusted him. If he had acted like that before, what was to prevent him from hurting her again? In the end, it was her distrust and inability to look past his old faults that led to the breakup of their friendship and a potentially romantic relationship.

The rest of high school went pretty well for Jaemi. She continued to excel in her studies and continued to progress in her acting, vocal, dancing, and rapping talents. She received much recognition for her skills and performances. In her last show of senior year, a talent scout from SM saw her perform. After speaking with her, the scout offered her an audition to train at SM. She accepted and soon became a trainee at SM. After a year and a half of training, she was put in the leadership position over a project group called 스타레트 (Starlet).  Excited for her newfound role, she practiced deligently and tried her best to be a good leader. She wrote lyrics for their songs with her fellow members and really bonded with them during rehearsals. However, after preparations for the group to debut were well underway, the  project group was suddenly dropped. Feeling as if she had failed not only herself and her expectations, but also her other members, she left SM, relinquishing her dream. For awhile, she worked as a barista until she found work as an actress, falling back into what gotten her into SM in the first place.

For the next ten years, Jaemi went from one play or musical to the next, enjoying being on stage, playing numerous parts, conducting acting workshops, and even directing a few small shows. However, something inside her still longed for what might have been if the group was not dropped.

One day, after conducting an acting workshop for college students, she overheard a few of the students talking about how hard it was to get into the music industry. Recalling her own brush with the industry, she went back home to her old apartment and looked through her old song lyrics....

Trivia
When she cleans at home, she blasts all sorts of music (musicals, K-pop, soundtracks, scores) and dances all around while she cleans.
Has learned to rap every song in the American musical: 'Hamilton'.
Doesn't like the quiet, so she'll randomly start making up a song when she's alone
•Total nerd/dork: Loves Star Wars (and not just the canon universe), Marvel, Disney, Fruits Basket manga, and Legend of Zelda.
• Can't stay still when she's by herself and not acting. She'll constantly bounce her legs when sitting, tap her fingers, or walking around in circles when talking on the phone.
• Gestures when talking

•She learned how to tap dance for musical shows.
• She knows a little bit of guitar and a little bit of piano. (Just enough to help her in writing lyrics).

•Likes to have her "alone time". Without at least a little bit, it's hard for her to refocus and recharge.

Writing (she loves writing stories and lyrics for songs). She carries a notebook in her purse so that she can write when she's inspired. (She will write anywhere.)
Exercising (paricularly dancing, tennis, badminton, basketball and swimming). She goes to the gym regularly and loves doing Helen Bowers' 'Ballet Beauty' workout DVDs, since they tone muscle without bulking. They always make her feel so graceful and slender, something that always seems so elusive to her with her past of being overweight.
 Stargazing
• Reading (mostly classics, but she does have a few modern books and is not above reading Star Wars)
• Playing video games (mostly Legend of Zelda or Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic), but she doesn't play them as often any more with her busy schedules.

Going on walks. She likes taking walks either in the morning or in the evening to think. If she's near a park, she'll go there and 'explore' for a while.
•Listening to music. She has a vast array of music on her phone. Lots of musicals. Some oldies. Soundtracks. Scores.

• DIYing T-shirts.

Coffee- she loves making coffee and going out for coffee. She also knows how to do latte art and loves learning how to make new designs.
Movies and books (particularly sci-fi, fantasy, super hero, or period pieces, perhaps because they sometimes have a theatrical flare to them) (And Black-and-white movies; they have that certain 'old Hollywood' vibe, and she loves watching those. Her favorites are 'My Favorite Wife', 'All About Eve', 'It Happened One Night', 'Sabrina', 'Casablanca', and 'The Awful Truth'.)
• Rain (walking in it, going to a coffee shop and sitting outside, writing and reading [with an umbrella of course], and yes, dancing in it literally)
• Loves watching ice skating competitions. She loves the beauty and drama of it all. It's quite enchanting to her. Though she's never even been ice skating before in her life. She loves how graceful it looks too and doubts she could ever look that graceful.
• Laughter- she loves the sound of laughter. Loves laughing herself.
• Disney- she grew up on Disney movies and loves  them still. She quotes them and sings the songs.

Family
Mother — Jennifer McCoy — 52
Her mother is sweet, kind, nurturing, an introvert, intelligent, and elegant. She worked at the U.S. naval base as a secretary after divorcing her husband to support her children. She loves her children very much and always wants the best for them. She often frets over Jaemi's future, wishing that her oldest daughter would find a nice husband and settle down. She knows that Jaemi can take care of herself, but she worries that Jaemi will be lonely if she doesn't find someone. Jaemi and her mother do get along though and call each other up on the phone to keep in touch.

Sister — Jung Haylie—  age 28
She is a bit of a fashionista. She is a photographer and works for a magazine. She is caring but rather opinionated. She and Jaemi are on good terms, but they don't always get along. Haylie tends to push her opinions on Jaemi, and Jaemi is too stubborn for Haylie.

 brother—Jaehyun— 25
He is goofy, a bit of a prankster, caring, carefree, lazy, and a procrastinator. After serving a few years in the Korean navy (because he was too lazy go to college), he finally decided to finally go to university. Jaemi and her brother get along very well. They chill and goof around a lot, though Jaemi often has to remind him that he has papers to write and exams to study for since he tends to put them off. She actually gets really irritated by his lazyness, but loves him too much to really get angered with his lacksidaisical attitude. He thinks she needs to relax more and be so much of a perfectionist.

Love Interest: Leeteuk (Park Jungsu) backup: Heechul (I don't actually have a backup since, well, I'm the author... but this is just an example. but Heechul is the best, isn't he? He's kinda my bias wrecker, so I had to put him here. Well, all of the SJ members are my bias wreckers I think. Hehe.)
Nickname(s)
Teukie — everyone calls him this. Shortened version of his name.
Ducky — Not sure who started this tbh. Fans? Fellow SJ members? Who knows. Either way, he is a dorky little duck.
Angel— Slightly self-given, slightly fan dubbed. He calls himself the special leader and when he described the day he was born, he said that God cried because he had lost his precious angel.
Birthplace  South Korea
Hometown South Korea
Language(s)
• Korean — native language
• English -- poor grasp of it. He can say a few words and phrases, but the poor guy is confused easily and doesn't understand much. (Jaemi uses this to her advantage quite a bit.)

Personality
• traits — kind, self-less, dorky, moments of cockiness, a bit of a cheapskate, talks too much, slightly flirtacious, complaining
He is a very kind and caring individual, always putting others' interests ahead of his own (for the most part.. he can be a bit of a cheapskate at times). He is funny and a bit of a dork, and gets others to laugh easily either through his (rather lame) jokes or crazy antics. He is good at making friends, but has has a bad habit of talking too much. He tries to be humble, but has his moments of cockiness and can be kind of a flirt at times. He is genuinedly sweet and attentive, and also rather discerning. He is also a hard worker and always tries to be the best man that he can be. However, that doesn't stop him from complaining. He is a bit of a baby and sometimes complains about simple things like rain and being cold. (He should probably man up a bit.)

Background
Not gonna really going to go into this. He really didn't have the best childhood sadly. However, despite his past, he has remained strong and continued to be good man.

Trivia
Not necessary. (Plus, if I started putting down all the trivia I knew about Leeteuk, then we'd be here all day. )

First Meeting
Jaemi first met Leeteuk when they were both trainees. She was standing in one of the hallways, holding a notebook against the wall while she scribbled away at some lyrics that she had to write down before she forgot them. Curious, he approached her and asked what she was doing. She lifted her head and immediately recognized him as the leader of the new generation group. He recognized her as the leader of 스타레트. Both got to talking about the challenges and joys of training and their project groups, anticipating their debut dates. They soon lost track of time and had to part. They saw each other several times between schedules at SM, falling easily into a long conversation each time. One day, just before Super Junior's debut, he overheard some of the managers talking about 스타레트 and their pending debut date, hearing that there were some 'new developments' in the matter. One of the managers noticed Leeteuk and asked his opinion on the matter. Since the group was talented, Leeteuk knew that these developments must be something good and exciting, perhaps an earlier debut. He smiled and agreed whole-heartedly, saying that he hoped to see everything come about soon.

On the day of his group's debut, Jaemi came to congratulate him and tell him to 'break-a-leg' before his performance. He thanked her and then told her he was excited for the news. When she asked what news he was talking about, he said, "Oh, just something about your group. I'm excited for it. I had a bit of a say in it," he said, trying to impress her a bit. He smiled and sent her a wink.

That day, Jaemi and the other members of  were called to meet with the executives, and were told that their group was disbanded. Discouraged and feeling as if she had failed, Jaemi left the SM building. On her way out, she saw Super Junior returning from SBS. Her eyes met Leeteuk's and she turned away hastily, feeling her chest clench as she hurried away from the SM building. She may have failed, but 'he did have a say in it'.

Interactions
Jaemi cannot stand him. Whenever she hears him on the radio, she shuts the radio off. He is constant reminder of why she shouldn't trust people too easily. He had a say in the disbandment of her group, and she could never forget that. He may have been young then, and she forgave him that, but she could not let it go that he had disbanded her group...

When The Starlets are forced to work with Super Junior because of their contract issues, Jaemi tries to remain professional and impassive around Leeteuk. As manager and member of the group, she strives to act as cool as she can when dealing with all of them, but she tends to be very curt and to the point in her dealings with him one-on-one. She has seen how he is a 'determined flirt' and is such an 'egotistical jerk', and strives to put this self-proclaimed 'angel' back in his place. On screen and onstage, she acts like she is friendly toward him. Offscreen, she tries to ignore him, sometimes sending him sarcastic remarks.

However, as she sees more of Leeteuk, being forced to work with him a wide variety of areas, she sees that he may not be the jerk she thought he was. He seems to be kind and attentive towards her, her group, and especially to his dongsaengs. He often sacrifices personal comforts for them. However, she continues to tell herself not to trust him. Despite this, she gradually drops the charade around him and finds herself actually enjoying his company. However, he betrayed her once before... won't he betray her again?

• It's become common knowledge by now that your group was originally disbanded ten years ago. What have you personally been doing since then? Well, as some of you know, I've actually been involved in theatre. I love it. I've worked as an actress, a director, and a teacher for acting workshops. I love all these things, but the truth is, it always felt like something was missing. But I guess some dreams take longer than others, n'est-ce pas? *giggles*
• How do you feel about working so closely with Super Junior? *keeping her composure* *smiles disarmingly* It'll be nice working with our sunbaes. There's a lot we can learn from them with us being a rookie group. *looks at camera with soft smile* Please take care of us, sunbaes! Merci beaucoup! *bows*
• What do you personally look forward to now that The Starlets are coming out with their first album? *makes thinking pose* Hmm... *snaps fingers* Everything. *chuckles* *leans forward in anticiipation, listing off each of the following items on her fingers* I love writing lyrics for songs. I've been doing it since I was a kid. It'll be nice to collaborate with the others and see what we can come up with for new songs. And it will be nice to see that music on an album. And I'm looking forward to performing at a concert. *giggles* Like I said, I think I'm excited for everything.
