visuals — hyemi has wide brown eyes so dark they almost look black. when she smiles, she has one small dimple at the corner of her lips. her skin is milky white and her hair is long, black, and straight. it stops just around her hips. she used to do her own hair and make up, but now that she's one of the higher costing courtesans, people do her makeup for her. her customers will never see her bare face, because she's required to always keep the make up on. she's always drenched with strong perfume, another requirement for being a courtesan. depending on what her job is for the night, her appearance will change. when parading around streets, she wears a colorful hanfu and ties her hair up with beautiful hair accessories. when meeting customers, she usually only has a few ornaments in her hair and most likely has it half up and half down, and is usually seen wearing a light colored hanfu, usually being green or pink. when going out to visit her brother, or anywhere else where she isn't working, she wears a white hanfu so she doesn't stand out.

personality —
( positive ) devoted, empathetic, alluring, social, mature
( negative ) two-faced, indifferent, provocative, passive, inexpressive

being a good courtesan means being a good actress. because of that, hyemi has a mask she wears when doing her job. of course, she drags some of her true traits into her courtesan work to make her seem more realistic. when working, hyemi is empathetic and cares for her clients. she listens to their every word and puts herself in their shoes to understand them. she's mature enough to help point out how to find a solution or how to solve a small problem. she's always level-headed and is always smiling. she dedicates all of herself to her client and to the task at hand, never thinking of anyone else. she always knows what to say to make people feel comfortable and how to spark up a conversation with someone who doesn't know where to begin. being provocative and ual is part of her job, so of course she knows the exact moment when she should initiate physical contact, and where she needs to touch to start something.

but what part of courtesan hyemi is the real hyemi? she's devoted sometimes, yes, but it's certainly a rare occurrence to see her extremely devoted to a task unless she's working. nothing about hyemi out of work is empathetic, and when she takes off her make up she's more childish than the motherly side she displays when with clients. the only thing she keeps 100 percent of is her alluring aura. something about her unconsciously makes eyes drawn to her, and makes people look at her. she has the aura of a woman with experience, even out of work, despite being so young. though it helps when she's working, she dislikes the attention when she's not trying to draw clients in.

the real shin hyemi is someone who lets life bring her wherever it pleases. "wherever the wind blows" is a quote that describes her a little too much. she doesn't have many desires, so she ends up looking blank all the time. when people see her on the streets before the red light district opens, she's rarely smiling. in fact, she doesn't have any emotions on her face whatsoever. it's not that she doesn't have emotions though, she just doesn't frequently experience things where she can show them. her job forces her to fake emotions so often, that she gets too tired to express them outside of work. hyemi rarely cares about anything, and that shows on her face. she's the queen of indifference, rarely ever caring about anything that's not her brother. the real shin hyemi only speaks when greeting people, or when she is spoken to, to continue conversation. hyemi without her mask, is probably the most boring girl on the earth.

inner demon — hyemi cares too little. she doesn't care about anything except for her brother's and her guard's wellbeing. that's the only thing she could care about now. because of that, she usually ends up letting fate decide how her life plays out. she doesn't usually make decisions, always telling people "whichever option is fine with me", since she rarely has an opinion. it's a fatal flaw that usually brings her more grief and misfortune rather than luck and happiness.

background — hyemi was born two years after hoseok in the poorest area of eudaimonia. she lived not knowing when her next meal would be, and so it wasn't unexpected when at seven she and her brother were sold for money. ten year old hoseok held onto his sister with all his might, never letting anyone tear the two apart. hyemi had always clung to her brother with all of her strength, crying into his shoulder every night as they were transferred from place to place. they ended up in the capitol, where hoseok was sold somewhere else and hyemi stood among many other young girls her age and forced to become a courtesan.

she got beat practically every night for sneaking out to see her older brother. she never learned her lesson, and eventually, they stopped beating her and let her do as she pleased as long as she always came back. they didn't want to sell damaged goods, after all. she grew up knowing how to make and serve tea to her customers, how to fake a smile and pretend to listen to how someone's day went. she learned how to pretend to care and pamper creepy old men to feel good about themselves. she learned how to play instruments and dance and sing for those stressed, rich men's entertainment. they were the reason why she wasn't kicked out of the brothel immediately.

she was their best product. she was, unfortuanately for hyemi, a quick learner and could easily adapt to any situation. unable to hold his excitement, the head of the geisha house started her off early. the moment she turned sixteen, she got her first official job as a courtesan. she was sold to an old noble for the night. she remembered how he smiled at her and she remembered the shivers he sent up her spine. she remembered how she still had to smile and please him. she remembered putting her hanfu back on and scrubbing her skin until it turned red when she got back to her room. hyemi remembers crying and running to her nineteen year old brother the next morning.

she was lucky if she had a night without a customer. sometimes she'd have more than one, but those were the weeks where she had absolutely no free time. she made a habit of visiting her brother in the early mornings whenever she could, giving her little to no time for sleep. despite that, her skin was still beautifully pale and flawless. her eyes are still wide and bright, and her lips are still a beautiful shade of pink without the lipstick they apply daily. she only got busier and busier once she turned eighteen. people all around the capital have heard of her now--the e that was so stunningly gorgeous and good at her job. she made everybody feel so loved and special--like she adored only them.

hyemi is so damn good at her job, and she hates herself for it.

relations
older brother || shin hoseok (23) || she visits him practically every morning when he's patrolling the area, so they're able to talk frequently. he became a guard at the palace after training for years. practically every worker at the palace knows that one of their guards is the older brother of the most famous courtesan in the country, so hoseok insists on meeting her outside of his work place. she's independent now, she has to be, but she still likes being childish around her brother. she likes holding his hand and hugging him like they're still children, and he just lets her do as she wants. he regrets not being able to get her out of the red light district, and vows that he'll find a solution for her. she's his everything, and he's hers. the two siblings strongly believe in blood being thicker than water, and would never abandon each other. she will do anything he requests of her. if he orders her to do something, she can't refuse.
coworker || li caoyun (25) || the second highest seller in the geisha house they work in. other courtesans are competitive and easily jealous, so hyemi was only able to make one friend--caoyun. they're practically best friends, since they don't have anyone else but themselves. they talk about which customers were the most enjoyable to be around and which ones they should avoid--which ones paid the most and which ones were the cheapest. they also talk about when they'll be able to leave the hell they live in. caoyun will be able to leave in three years, if she keeps her sales up. hyemi will have to work another five years before she can retire. they're friends who can talk about anything, and if they don't trust anyone else, they can certainly trust each other.
guard || lee jinhyuk (21) || he usually ends up being one of her guards when she's on the job. they do know each other to a certain extent. he sometimes worries when she goes out without anyone to protect her. he knows when she's ready to drop her mask so he always ushers clients away. he's the guard that constantly has to bring her back to her room and make sure she's safe, unharmed, and healthy. he's been her guard for two years now, so she gradually began to depend on him. sometimes he worries for her a little too much, and she has to assure him that she'll be okay on her own when outside of work. he actually gives pretty good advice, and is a nice person to be around when she's emotionally drained and exhausted from a job. he's a nice source of silent comfort. the biggest problem is that during their four year work relationship, she started growing affection for him. maybe it was because he was the first man that wasn't her brother to see her and accept her personality outside of courtesan work. of course because of her job, she would never tell him, so she settles for admiring him from afar. the crush she has is, of course, a little childish.

lover's background — though jongin is youngest son among the princes born from the official queen, he never wanted the throne. since he was young, he watched his brothers fight over it and decided that becoming king was something he never wanted to do. because of that, he never wanted to be good at anything. he was always fooling around and never paid attention when he'd get lectured. as a child, he got beat the most because of his dismissive attitude. even now, as an adult, he's still the same. he hasn't learned anything from the lectures and the beatings, and still sneaks out to "have fun". while all of his brothers are arguing about who deserves the throne the most, jongin is out paying for drinks and spending his nights with a group of beautiful girls who want his attention--and his money.

personality
genuine, honest, flirtatious, charismatic, straight-forward, warm-hearted, easygoing, stubborn, possessive, dismissive

the 11th prince is seen as one of the kinder ones. he's always displaying his true emotions on his face, and rarely ever lies. jongin likes telling the truth, and it's one of the reasons why he wouldn't want to be king of eudaimonia. because of his honesty, he tends to "tell it like it is" without ever sugarcoating anything. if he's talking to someone, he never hides his intentions, sometimes he even comes out and says what he's trying to get out of the conversation. despite his somewhat cold and lazy expression at times, he only ever has good intentions in mind. people in the palace say that prince jongin could never hurt a fly because he's so kind and warm hearted. he cares for people too much.

but jongin loves to have fun, and his idea of fun is hanging around a bunch of women and sweet talking all of them. he has a way of talking that makes people, especially females, drawn to him. he has what others would call a charismatic aura. adding that to his good looks, he usually ends up becoming the center of attention wherever he goes. jongin loves having fun so much, that he became extremely easygoing. so easygoing to the point that it's almost lazy. he ignores things he doesn't want to hear and pretends like he doesn't notice. this usually ends up with him leaving problems unresolved, and regretting his  decisions later on. yet once the prince sets his mind to something, he won't stop until he finishes it. or, if he wants something, it's the same. he won't feel sane until he has it in his grasps. and once he has that thing he wanted, he's never letting it go. it's his, and all his.

trivia—
- is a good dancer
- hyemi (and everybody in her work place) already knows he's a prince, so she makes a habit out of calling him 'your highness' or 'prince jongin' when they're not in the bedroom.
- though he's physically stronger than some of his brothers, his skill with the sword is the lowest since he never attends lessons
- he loves his brothers when they're not fighting for the crown all the time. when they are, he tends to ignore them.

inner demon — jongin could care less about anything he doesn't find an interest in. he doesn't exactly match up with the sin of sloth, but it'd be the one he's most similar with.

if he doesn't find anything intriguing or interesting about it, he won't do it no matter how much someone begs him to. it's harder, since he's so stubborn all the time as well. because of this, he never attended private tutoring sessions and always snuck out to have fun. the only time he was usually in the palace was when one of his brothers was free and he could spend time with them. when he's not having fun, he'll do anything to find a way to interest himself. he hates being bored, and needs to always be doing something that makes him excited and happy.

love story —
when jongin first saw her, he couldn't tear his eyes off of her. hyemi was a product, so she was showing herself off. she was an advertisement trying to get men to come to the red light district and pay to spend a few hours with her. she had all men's eyes on her, but she still walked with her head held high and a warm smile on her lips. the prince asked the girl beside him who she was, she became irritated but answered nonetheless.

"shin hyemi. she's the most requested courtesan in the country. all the nobles are always asking to spend the night with her."

there were guards by her side to protect her from men that would try to touch her without paying beforehand. but jongin was already captivated by everything about her. from the flashy hair ornaments decorating her smooth black locks to the ends of her hanfu that dragged behind her. he left the group of girls he had behind to follow her into the red light district. he entered the geisha house she worked at with his personal servant and looked around the decorated building in awe.

"is...shin hyemi working tonight? i'd like to spend some time with her."

unfortunately for the young prince, she would be occupied for the next week. the man at the front was stubborn enough to not let jongin push his appointment up further, so he settled with visiting again a week later. for the next week, until he could see her, his thoughts were occupied by her. so exactly a week later, when he ended up sitting next to her, he was fidgeting in his seat. it took him a few poured drinks to get him to relax around her, and he immediately spilled out his thoughts on her beauty. they didn't have the first night, he just hugged her and held her as if she was his and only his.

"hyemi, i want to buy you. can i...make you mine?"

she was costly, but he was one of the twelve princes of the country. it wasn't anything he couldn't afford. he always booked the longest nights, and visited her as frequently as he could. this usually ended up being three or four times a week. hyemi couldn't complain, since he was a client she enjoyed pleasing. he wasn't only looking at her body, he actually liked her company. jongin liked making her laugh and smile. he only kissed her after his fifth visit. but the moment he suggested buying her, her smile faded.

it wasn't uncommon for a prince or a king to have a wife or a concubine that was a e, but hyemi was uncertain about the future. she didn't want to leave jinhyuk, even though she'd never be able to express her feelings for him. jongin only knew hyemi, the top selling e in all of eudaimonia, not shin hyemi, the younger sister of shin hoseok and the young girl who was sold by her mother and father whose faces she no longer remembers.

that night, she managed to convince him to just fall asleep with her, and they'd talk about it another time. every time he brought it up, she changed the subject. to her, their relationship was always one of courtesan and client. she wouldn't let her feelings get in the way of that, it's how she became the number one e in the country. jongin on the other hand, being the selfish prince he is, wouldn't ever let her go. he wants her all to himself, so he insists on doing everything he can to make it that way.

relationships —
servant || han taehyun (24) || he's been jongin's personal servant since the prince was around five or six. he'd always get dragged into trouble because of him and would usually end up receiving a harsher punishment than jongin, since the young boy was a prince after all. he'd be the one blamed when jongin snuck out or wasn't behaving. which is why he usually ends up begging the prince not to sneak out all the time and to not cause him trouble. jongin, surprisingly, likes having taehyun around--probably just to make fun of him.
