How to review, someone teach me or something.

So, this is kind of a rant (?) blog and a question blog. I don't actually know, ahaha. It's also my first time ranting to you guys, if anyone is actually reading :,)

I just opened my one-person review shop a few days ago and I've decided to try reviewing stories since I'm a real bookworm in reality. So to help my inner self come out of reviewing, I checked out a few review shops and read a few of their reviews. And while doing that, I noticed that a few review shops are critical (which is a good thing? Since they're being honest) but some are just, I don't know, plain right terrible. I'm not offending anyone in this matter, since I'm not pointing fingers (and I don't even remember the shop names nor the reviewer). But if you requested a review and saw this:

Plot [13/20]

The plot isn't my type exactly. It's too cliche and the plot goes all over sometimes, lol. I don't really like the way it's going and it's not what I had actually thought it would go.

Would you really accept a review like this? Especially one with just three sentences and no reasons as to why they don't like your plot? Because I wouldn't. I wouldn't bash the reviewer either (I'm not that mean) but I would ask them why they didn't like it and what made them not like it. A proper review isn't suppose to have 'lol', 'ahaha', or any abbreviations like that (from my point of view). With my little experience of being a reviewer (and reading pros and cons of being one), the review isn't suppose to be all on the reviewers' taste, but supposed to be there to help what the author is missing and what they need to improve on. I've been a reviewer for a few months so I don't exactly know all the bad and the good but I've had my share of bad/good reviews and bad/good stories.

And now for the real question.

How does a proper review look like and how to do it?

I'm currently doing a review and what I'm doing is pointing out the mistakes and correcting them, helping the author. But at the same time, I'm putting my opinion on it too, what is interesting and what is leading the readers away. I've looked at amazing reviews such as kodawari reviews and they are just so- I can't even put them in words. I've read all the reviews they've done and the way they organize it and do their reviews are just so amazing and astonishing, probably considering that they're older than me and have better knowledge. :,)

If you are a reviewer (or one of the pros, yes please), I can send you the wip review I'm currently working on. I don't exactly know how much points to dock off and especially with my goddamn (slight) OCD, I want the review to look perfect and clean. I cannot stress this as I'm comparing my reviews to better ones, someone slap me right now (I'm literally imagining the requester telling me that they want a redo and it's terrifying for me. It makes me think that I didn't do a good job even though I tried my best). If you want to see my review, I would really like for you to criticize it a bit but not too much since it's not 100% done yet. Thank you (if anyone even read to the end) :)

That first example of a review is definitely not something I would consider a good review. I agree with everything you pointed out and here are some of my rants (hope you don't mind)...

"the plot isn't my type": A reviewer doesn't get to choose do they? Why decide to be a reviewer? You are supposed to help ANY writers. Frustrating to even think this person is reviewing for budding writers.

"Not what I actually thought it would go"?? It's not up to the reviewer to decide which direction the story should go. The story still belongs to the author and he/she can dang well decide how or what happens in his/her story.

"Don't like the way it's going"? What do they mean by that. A reviewer needs to be more specific and give constructive criticism for improvement not a half- job filled with negativity.

I think this review shop gives a great and helpful insight for reviewers to use as a guide. It's clean and well thought out; it can help reviewers get a gist of a good review and teach reviewers how a review should be like.
Really though, authors request for a review on their story to have a reviewer review their story and tell the author what's good and what needs to be changed so they can improve. The reviews like the plot example is unnecessary and a waste, honestly.
