海の息子 ` KANG DURI

"Just let me suffer in peace."
tl;dr An adrenaline junkie who is just trying her best.

name Kang Duri
ethnicityKorean
date of birth2000.11.27
place of birth Songpa (district in Seoul)
current residence Kuwon

appearance

She only wears comfortable clothes. Mostly sweatshirts and sweatpants. She only wears one pair of sneakers, and it's Adidas superstars that she received from her parents on her 14th birthday. She hates that people think she wears them for the aesthetic, because they really are just her favorite and only pair of shoes. Duri doesn't care much about fashion, but she still manages to look stylish since sporty clothing has become the latest trend.

Duri is also really tall compared to most girls. She is 5'8" and her height intimidates some people, especially when paired with her intense stare.

the tale

Duri moved to Kuwon when she was eight years old. Her parents decided to live with the grandma on her mom's side because of her declining health. She died when Duri was twelve. In the four years she spent with her grandmother, she actually became very attached to her. When she died, she didn't know what to do. All she could do wallow in her sadness.

Duri has a carefree mother and father who wanted to raise her without interfering too much. They didn't want to make her home life too stuffy. They wanted her to become independent, but instead she just ended up feeling neglected. However, she didn't know how to convey this to them because they had always told her how proud they were that she could do things on her own. She's an only child, so she didn't have any siblings to confide in. There were no friends for her to turn to, either, since she ended up becoming a very reserved person.

With no outlets whatsoever, she ended up becoming very reckless with her decisions and her impulsiveness has made her build up an immunity to change. She's gotten into some bad stuff but has never been caught for it until now. She had been drinking with her "friends" (she's really just with them to kill time). Duri drinks a lot but never gets caught. They usually ID people at clubs but she is very good at slipping past and pretending she doesn't exist. Under the influence of alcohol, she and her friends decided to shoplift from a store. They didn't steal anything major, just a few pens and pencils, but the owner got very mad and had them arrested. Of course, the school found out about this, and then a lot of other people found out about this, and now she (and the swim team) have a very bad reputation.

Other than killing time with friends, Duri doesn't do much. She never does her homework and after practice, she hangs out with her friends (she usually goes to bed at around midnight). The majority of her school work is completed during self study periods. There's this one girl in her class who lets her copy the homework because she feels bad for her. She, herself, is aware of the small worth of her existence. Duri actually has a huge interest in space but is really bad at physics. She's not sure how that would work out and she doesn't have a lot of energy to try, but it's one of the few things she enjoys. Every weekend she sets aside time to bike to the planetarium by her house.

Duri hardly talks at all because she just doesn't think it's necessary, but this has inadvertently given her an air of mystery. Word on the street is that she's totally cool. She actually has quite a few admirers (which she isn't aware of at all).

Duri's biggest dilemma is that she does not know how to express herself in a healthy way. This leads to a lot of misunderstandings that she doesn't know how to fix. Her pride presents her from doing anything about it, but a deeper part of her just wants to connect with others. Duri's character is all about balance and how she lacks any. She's either too quiet, too reckless, too proud... She has all of one and none of the other.

grandeur

Duri first got into swimming a few years ago, when she started middle school. It was the only meddling her parents had ever done to her in her entire life. They had realized that Duri didn't have any friends, and this really concerned them, but they had no idea how to go about it. Her parents came to the conclusion that participating in some kind of sport would help her make friends. Maybe the camaraderie of a team sport would give her a push in the right direction. They ended up randomly suggesting swimming, but Duri took this very seriously. She was extremely happy that they actually paid attention to her for once and stuck to swimming with an intense passion, all through middle school and into high school.

Duri's speed isn't amazing, but her endurance is insane, so she does relatively well in 400m races. It's good enough for other schools to consider her as a possible threat. She isn't exceptionally good at any particular swim style, but she enjoys the backstroke. She is aware of how cheesy this is, but her dream is to sneak into the school's pool at night and swim while looking up at the stars.

Due to her shoplifting incident, the reputation of the swimming team has taken a turn for the worse. Duri is hated by other schools and by her own team because of the negative attention she has gained. She acts like she doesn't care, which makes the team detest her even more, but it's really just a coping mechanism. Every time she enters the water, it feels like she's diving into an ocean filled with sharks. It pushes her to stay at practice even longer, but it's getting to the point that she may be practicing too much and is just killing herself at this point.

connections

The only person Duri has managed to warm up to is Kwon Hyuk (face claim: DEAN - are we allowed to use idols for other characters?). He's a senior that goes to a different high school in the area. He helps his grandma maintain the planetarium that she works at, so he's almost always there. Duri thinks he's the coolest person on the planet because he knows so much about the stars, and because the way he dresses is so cool (fresh kicks, bomber jackets, the works). Obviously, she's too afraid to tell him this, though.

In fact, she barely talks to him. He does most of the talking when they're together and remains friends with her because he's good at reading people. He can tell that she doesn't have bad intentions, even when she doesn't answer him. She may just have the tiniest crush on him (it's actually a HUGE crush but there's no way she can admit that to herself). Duri barely talks, but around him, she can't speak at all.
