There are a few things in Han Yewon's personality that haven't ever changed since she was a kid. The first one is being an extrovert. Being an only child she has always had to talk with other kids if she wanted to play with someone besides herself and her friendliness is something that never faded away. She's still a very talkative person who's not afraid of saying what she thinks without worrying too much about the consequences. She's one of those people who's not afraid of telling the truth even if it hurts, which makes her look like a very honest person. For her it's almost impossible to tell lies, because she can't hide her feelings at all. She's like an open book and everyone could understand what she's thinking of just by looking at her eyes. She actually likes showing her emotions also through skinship, because she thinks that touching other people can make a bond grow stronger and they'd become close friends faster, but she doesn't seem to understand that not everyone likes to be touched --especially from strangers or simple acquaintances-- and gets upset when someone rejects her.

 

She hates to be contradicted and criticized, reacting in an aggressive way towards the people who dared to hurt her pride. She always needs to have the last word in a discussion, even if she knows she's in the wrong. It's very easy to irritate her; there are many things she finds particularly annoying, so it's easy to do something she doesn't like, which would make you earn a cold glare from her, if you're lucky. Depending on what you did or said and on her mood, she can be pretty mean, snapping at you with a witty comeback hoping you to stop. Sometimes, if she can't think of something to say, she'd let her actions speak in her place. She loses her patience quickly and when she's angry she stops thinking straight, becoming impulsive.

Sometimes, her decisions aren't the best even if she's not angry, hence being driven by impulsiveness. People might mistake her for a gullible girl, but she's not; a gullible person would believe in anything you'd tell them, but she's actually somehow skeptical. For example, she'd never believe in the earth being flat or in flying pigs just because you say so. No, she's not gullible, but it's easy to influence her decisions a lot, if you say something in a convincing way. This made her make many mistakes in the past, but at least now she changed and she's trying helping people and putting those she loves above herself by importance. She's one of those girls who would do anything to protect those she cares for and her happiness is seeing the others happy. She can't really say no when she's asked for a favor, not because she's a yes-girl, but just because she likes to feel helpful.

 

To make up for the mistakes she did in the past, she decided to stand up against injustice. Now, she has a very strong sense of justice and she always acts like a knight in shining armor who's going to save the damsel in distress. She's afraid of nothing; insects and filthy animals don't affect her in any way --she thinks some are even cute, look at geckos, geckos are cute. She's the type of person you'd call to help you killing a wasp or when you're being mistreated, because she'd run to you to defend you. 

 

 

The year 1992 had almost ended when her mother gave birth to Han Yewon. It was the evening the 30th of December and, being winter, it was snowing heavily outside. The only thing her mother regrets is that she had to spend the New Year's Eve and the New Year in a hospital bed, but in the end she didn't care too much about missing that celebration; she had something else to celebrate as she cradled her daughter in her arms.

 

Yewon was very friendly like almost all children are and she was always the first one to go to other kids to introduce herself and ask if they could play together. Her parents both worked until late and being an only child she needed someone else to keep her company. When the elementary school she was attending shut down and she had to transfer school for the new scholastic year, she found herself surrounded by people she didn't know and she did her best to become part of one of the groups that were already made in that new class. She was easily influenced by what the leader of their little group said and she doesn't even know how she became a bully at the young age of 8. She felt respected and it was actually quite enjoyable. She kept bullying some of her classmates and those younger than her for years treating them like servants, until, in high school, she met Choi Ara.

 

Ara was a geek, a socially awkward penguin who didn't talk to anyone and only cared about her PSP and her fantasy books. She seemed the perfect victim to Yewon, who tried to make fun of her or force her to do things for her ("Yah, you, go buy me some chocolate milk.") but something was off. Ara didn't care about Yewon, she didn't respect her at all. It was the first time someone ignored her and Yewon found it annoying, so she kept pestering the girl. Her fellow bully friends told her to give up on Ara because it wasn't worth it, it was just a waste of energy, but Yewon didn't want to give up. One day, Ara spoke to her and Yewon will never forget the things she said. "You feel lonely, right?" Ara asked. Yewon laughed at her, saying she had plenty of friends instead, but the other girl continued: "You call them friends only because you don't want to be alone." And she was right. It took a long time for Yewon to admit that what Ara said was true and somehow she started to change. She understood no one actually respected her but they feared her instead and what she was doing was wrong. By the end of high school Ara was her best friend and her old friends weren't friends anymore. Actually, Yewon started standing up against them when they mistreated someone else. Ara convinced her to apologize to all those people she had bullied and her old friends made fun of her because they said she turned into a chicken but Yewon proved them she wasn't by throwing a ceramic plate at one of them to show dominance --which fortunately didn't hit anyone or she'd have been in trouble-- and instead of turning against her, they started fearing her because she was acting crazy that day and maybe it was better to leave her alone. After graduation, instead of going at university like many of her peers, Yewon decided to find a job because she was tired of studying even if her parents weren't happy at all with her decision. Ara, on the contrary, got unexpectedly accepted at Seoul National University and studied design, working part-time at her parents' jewelry store.

 

She got and lost so many jobs she can't even remember exactly where she worked. Somehow she always seems to make mistakes that get her fired on the spot and she has yet to learn from her mistakes. Yewon always gets fired after a few weeks because she can't control her impulsiveness and acts rude towards the customers. The most stable job she had was at McDonald's and she kept that job for more than six months, a big record, really. During that time she even managed to get a boyfriend, Kim Hansoo (a nurse who worked in the hospital close by and stopped at McD's almost every night at the end of his shift). Their relationship was quite intense but unfortunately also very short; Yewon had the suspect he was cheating on her and she got the proof. Since then, she didn't have the strength to enter another relationship, being afraid to be cheated on again. She doesn't really mind being single ("I have more time to spend with you, my dearest friends") but sometimes seeing happy couples make her heart ache in envy. 

 

Currently, she still lives in her parents' apartment and as much as she would like to move out and find herself a house of her own, she can't because she doesn't have a job. The tension at home is quite palpable. The last job she got and lost was in a cosmetics store and she liked it a lot, but, as always, it didn't last long. Now she's searching for another job, she would accept anything. Her days are quite boring; she spends most of her time job-hunting, usually at her friend Hyunjoo's cafe. She loves that place because their coffee is the best and she can steal their wifi.

 

 

Han Jonghwan (한 종환) ー father : 58

Jonghwan has never liked how his daughter didn't want to keep studying. He wished her to become a doctor or something like that, but she didn't and he's still upset at her. They don't really speak a lot, and when they do it's usually something about how she lost her job and why she always gets fired because of her stupid behavior. Didn't he teach her how to behave? Why doesn't she act like a good person? Where did he go wrong?

Lee Bonim (이 본임) ー mother : 54

Even if Bonim isn't very happy with her daughter's behavior as well, she's more approachable than her husband. Yewon thinks of her mother almost like a friend --not too close, but a friend-- because they can talk about anything without ending up yelling at each other, at least.

 

 

Kim Hyuntae (김 현태) & Do Sooyoung (도 수영) ー Parents : "Parents-in-law" : 60 & 58

If it wasn't for their youngest son, Myungsoo's parents probably wouldn't have known anything about him being married to Yewon. This hurt them quite a lot; why didn't their son tell them this awesome news? After the initial shock, they were happy for him, though. They still haven't had the chance to meet Yewon, because Myungsoo always manages to find a reason to avoid going to have dinner at his parents' with her, be it because she's working (very unlikely since she is unemployed more often than being employed), because she's sick poor girl her cold is so bad she can barely breathe, she's out of the country to visit her brother (who doesn't exist, but shh they don't know). He doesn't have the courage to tell them their relationship is as fake as flying pigs, because they looked so excited for him and because they would ask him why he had to pretend to be married. Hearing he got bullied and called 'gay' by his coworkers would probably hurt his parents even more so he better keep the truth to himself. 

Kim Moonsoo (김 문수) ー Brother : "Brother-in-law" : 22

When Moonsoo found out, he was absolutely shocked. He seriously believed they were married for real and his brother didn't tell anyone. It's also his fault his parents found out, because apparently he couldn't keep his mouth shut (Myungsoo almost punched him because he didn't want his mother to know). Moonsoo doesn't know the reason behind the play because his brother is too ashamed to let him know, but he goes with it. His first impression of Yewon was quite good because she's a spontaneous person and he's quite extroverted too so they got along quite quickly. 

Lee Sungjin (이 성진) ー Bully/co-worker : Ex-neighbour : 29

Seo Soohyun (서 수현)  ー Friends : 24

Having been classmates in middle school, Soohyun and Yewon weren't friends at all back then. Let's say Soohyun strongly hated Yewon as she was one of the bullies who made fun of her. They didn't go to the same high school, but they met again during that period of time when Yewon was changing thanks to Ara. Their reunion wasn't very happy or friendly, and since Soohyun holds grudges it took them a while before she accepted Yewon's apology. Sometimes Yewon visits the bakery Soohyun works at because she loves eating their pastries and she always says she envies her friend because she works there. They're currently friends and they talk every time they see each other but Yewon has like the feeling Soohyun hasn't really fully forgiven her because sometimes her jokes about her losing jobs sound a bit too mean. 

Seo Hyunjoo (서 현주) ー Friends : 30

Hyunjoo and Yewon met when, back in high school, the younger threw a plate towards her "friends" in the cafe. Of course their first meeting wasn't the most friendly interaction; it revolved around a very angry Hyunjoo and a very sorry Yewon, but it fortunately solved quickly. To repay for the broken plate actually Yewon even volunteered to work at the cafe. Hyunjoo accepted and regretted very soon. (It was the first part-time job Yewon got and quickly lost. The first of many.) Even after getting fired though they stayed on good terms, also because Yewon kept going back at the cafe every time she could as she loved the place and their coffee. How could Hyunjoo stay mad at a regular customer? Exactly, she couldn't. 

 

 

TRIVIA 

+ ) nicknames : she has a love-hate relationship with nicknames. "Love" because she loves to come up with funny and cute nicknames for other people, but "hate" because she hates when others come up with nicknames for her. She accepts the Lannister one only because she's the first one to refer to herself as a Lannister.

+ ) if only netflix was available in korea : she watches English tv shows (with Korean subtitles obviously) more often than Korean dramas, and there are many series she's following at the moment. Every time she has some free time she downloads episodes and watches them on her laptop or her phone. Out of all the tv shows she watches, Game of Thrones is her favorite one because of the story, Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow. She only watches it when she's sure she's home alone because, you know, if her parents walk in on her watching it and there's a scene... gosh, it would be so embarrassing.

+ ) photographic memory : you might think her memory is great because she easily remembers people's faces, but she has a hard time with names, which is also one of the reasons why she gives nicknames so easily, because they're easier to remember.

+ ) allergies : Yewon is allergic to cat's fur, which is a pity because she loves cats. She can't stay for too long close to a cat or she'd start sneezing like crazy. She's also allergic to pollen, so in spring she usually goes out wearing a mask to cover her nose and mouth.

+ ) eating : she always says she'd like to have a bakery so she could eat everything in there for free, but she can't cook and has no experience or money to open one so it'll stay a dream of hers.

+ ) make-up : she'd actually like to go to a school to become a make-up artist, but it's expensive for her, and her parents don't really support this choice of hers, saying it would be better if she enrolls university instead. In the mean time, she practices make-up on her friends and on herself, following tutorials on YouTube.

+ ) bullies : oh the irony. She used to be one and now her sense of justice kicks in every time she sees someone being bullied and she needs to help them.

+ ) cheaters : well, who likes them? Feeling betrayed is not nice at all and Yewon knows it well.

+ ) litter : how can be some people so messy? Why don't they pick up after themselves? When she worked at McDonald's she noticed that at least 20% of people leave their tray on the table, like is it so difficult to throw away the remains of your stupid happy meal? And have you ever noticed how littered the streets are at night around street food stands?

+ ) low battery : her phone is not only a phone, but also her mp3, her tv, her library and basically if her phone could cook she'd say it's absolutely perfect. She uses it a lot and it's really painful to see it with that 2% of battery, ready to turn itself off at 1pm every day. She bought an external battery recently so she can avoid the problem, but she forgets to actually charge it and the problem remains.

+ ) pictures : she hates posing for pictures. She's always so stiff and if you tell her to relax it makes her even more self-conscious and more stiff. She's not very photogenic but the left side of her face somehow turns out better in pics and she knows it, so every time she has to take a selfie with someone else she wants to stay in the left side.

one. Why and how did Kim Myungsoo get into this awkward situation
Because he's an idiot, that's why. If only he didn't make up the lie he's married to a beautiful woman so those jerks at the office would stop spreading the fake news "Kim Myungsoo is gay" just because they saw him working in a hair salon. If only he could stand up against those people. And the worst is that no one believed him, because he didn't have a ring and he didn't have a single picture of her. When one of his co-workers invited him for his wedding telling him to bring his "wife"' --he did the quotation marks with his fingers as he said the word 'wife'-- to the party, Myungsoo answered "Of course, we'll be there". Oh, if only he didn't do that. He thought of bringing his cousin with him, at first; she had already accepted too, so he confirmed they'll be there. But two days before the party she got the sudden news she'd have to go on a work trip right on the day of the wedding. And Myungsoo is desperate, because he can't cancel everything last minute and he can't even show up without a wife, otherwise those s would make fun of him even more.

 

Myungsoo has known Hyunjoo for years, because she always goes to get her hair done at his mother's hair salon. Sometimes he helps there as well --mostly as a cashier but when it's too crowded he has to help with errands, wash or blow-dry clients' hair-- so that's where they met. His mother and Hyunjoo became friends and he became almost a regular at her cafe too, so yeah, they're kinda friends as well. When his cousin called him to tell she couldn't play as his wife anymore, he was sitting at a table sipping his usual black coffee. Hyunjoo overheard the conversation and she saw him bumping his head on the table after ending the call. "Hey, Myungsoo, what's wrong?" she motherly asked him putting a hand on his shoulder, and she was very surprised when he told her he needed a fake wife within two days. He asked her to be his fake wife, just to mumble a "Nah, forget it, noona you're too old" right after that and burying his face in his hands. Hyunjoo made him apologize for calling her old but being the caring person she is she made him tell her the whole story from the start and that's when she decided to help him finding a wife. "I already have in mind someone who would be perfect for you," she said smiling.

 

As soon as Hyunjoo finished talking with Myungsoo, she sent Yewon a text. it's time for you to pay your debt, miss lannister, it said, which she replied with a a lannister always pays his debts. So, what's the debt Yewon has towards Hyunjoo? It happened about a year ago. Yewon was dating that Kim Hansoo and she had the weird feeling he was cheating on her, so she asked --or rather, forced-- Hyunjoo to follow him. "If you do this I'll owe you, I'll repay you doing anything you want" she said and Hyunjoo did it, because her friend was being annoying and desperate at the same time. And Hyunjoo didn't forget about it.

Since he was in kindergarten, Myungsoo has been an introvert. He has never been comfortable when surrounded by many people and there are many reasons why. When he was younger, he was one of those children no one would choose for their team when playing games because of his clumsiness. Feeling excluded, he started isolating himself from the others and blocking other people outside of his self-made bubble. Some stupid kids used to make fun of him because he was a loner who only seemed to go to school to get good grades; he didn't really like studying, but since he wasn't very sociable he had a lot of free time to spend at home and finishing homework was only an excuse he'd use so his mother wouldn't worry because he didn't play with other kids. Growing up, his shyness didn't get any better and he is now mistaken as a cold and aloof person, but the truth is simply that he doesn't know well how to express his feelings so he doesn't really talk to strangers. Because of his personality, it's very difficult for him to open up to others, so he doesn't have many friends. He's one of those people who think it's better to have a few good friends instead of many who you don't really know well. With his friends, he knows he can be himself and his shyness fades away, showing a quite funny side of him. He laughs very easily and he likes to tell jokes even if he's not very good at it, but if he's comfortable around you he doesn't get embarrassed. Even when he does something clumsily --he trips over his own feet a lot because he doesn't pay attention to where he's going-- he laughs at himself amused, but still only if it happens around someone he's comfortable with. His co-workers and many people in the past made fun of him for his clumsiness --how to forget that time he tripped and splashed the coffee all over one of their clients?-- and in these occasions he doesn't laugh at all, but feels ashamed instead, only wanting to hide somewhere. He's quite absent-minded and sometimes it happens he doesn't listen to others, too focused on his own train of thoughts, which is very likely to be something about food. 

 

THE ENDING 

Yewon is the one who ends up proposing for real. During the time she spent playing as his wife she's gotten used to him and she fell in love with him --something she hadn't expected at all at first. She didn't think a lot about the proposal itself and it would seem she's rushing everything, but she really means it. "Playing the happily married couple is fun, we should keep doing this for a long while and organize a proper ceremony," she says half joking half serious, so she wouldn't be too embarrassed if he rejected her. "Are you serious?" he'd ask, happy, embarrassed and shocked all at the same time. And she would become red like a tomato but bravely answer that yes, she's very serious because she now can't imagine her life without him. He'd kiss her and accept. 

 

 

 

Oh well I was completely fine with it. After all, I thought I was going to be his fake wife only for a day, and who would fall in love in a day? Not me, of course! I admit I had a hard time keeping my eyes off him because, let's be real, he's handsome, but we didn't get along in the past and I'm pretty sure he still hates me, so I don't think we're compatible at all, at least for now until he see how sorry I am.

The biggest problem is that I can't really lie. I can try to tell lies, but everyone sees through me very easily so my lies are not very effective. Especially when I saw Lee Sungjin at the altar and his parents were there. Come on, we used to be neighbors for a long time, we know each other and his parents know I'm not married at all. Of course for the sake of Myungsoo I had to lie and I really did my best but I'm pretty sure he didn't believe the bull I was saying, like no one bit. 'Yewon shut up for 's sake' I kept thinking, but, well, you know how I am. I couldn't stand it when I saw how he was treating my 'husband'. If only Myungsoo didn't stop me I would have probably punched Sungjin in the face. Also, that jerk. I hate him. It's his fault our fake-married-couple game couldn't last for one day as it was supposed to be. He's the one who keeps asking Myungsoo to meet with us and, ugh, lying is very frustrating when you can't do it well.

...I don't know honestly. I guess it happened when I had to rush to his apartment because Sungjin suddenly called Myungsoo saying he was on his way to his house to... I don't know, to give him something for work I guess? Some papers? I don't know well. Anyway I had to go there because his flat was more like a man cave than a place where a married couple lives. I even had to bring my skincare products and my make-up to make it look real, oh my god. And I got lost so he had to guide me through phone and we have to thank every god out there Sungjin was late because he got stuck in traffic and came late.
Myungsoo never liked me, I know this for sure, and he's still suspicious. He doesn't trust me at all. But that day he made me go at his house and offered me dinner and we played with his cat. And I think for once, while we were waiting for Sungjin to finally come, we looked like... not a couple, but at least friends.  

To  be very honest, I didn't want to fall for him or for anyone. Sure, I kinda envied the happy couples, but after my experience with Kim Hansoo I didn't want to be involved in a relationship. I mean, I didn't want to fall in love. When I realized it at first, I was kinds scared. Not because I broke the rule, who cares about the rules, but because I had kinda broken my own promise to myself not to fall in love with a man anymore.
