as for her own fashion, she does take some pride in what she is seen wearing on a daily basis, knowing that there is someone out there with a camera in their hands, ready to capture her in her best and worst moments. her wardrobe mainly consists of a mixture of designer brands (many from the designers she has worked with) and thrift store clothing that she has managed to turn into casual couture. it isn't rare to see her walking around seoul in a white blouse and/or denim shorts, as they are both her ideal items for an everyday look, whilst the colours black and white are absolutely prominent gracing her in formal situations.

BACKGROUND

and people would say they're the lucky ones / the story of huang chenchen starts with that of her parents, huang min and wan jiayi, who could best be described as childhood best friends that turned into prominent lovers by the end of their high school lives. the toughest part of their relationship seemed to come with university, as jiayi was accepted into national taipei university and min wanted to stay in their hometown and help his father run a local courier business. somehow, throughout the six years that they spent running after their different ambitions, they managed to make it out alive with one another by their side, and eventually wed in the spring of 1992.

 

just like the morning sun / less than two years later, min and jiayi welcomed their first of two children into the world, whom they named chenchen with the hope that she would take the "dust morning (尘晨)" and turn it into a clear day for everybody. and even if only through smiles and giggles, it seemed as if she would do just that. her parents were dragged back into the reality of their occupations around the time of her first birthday, so from that moment on she was often left in the care of their stay-at-home neighbour, han jiafen, who loved to exchange homemade pastries in exchange for some of her hyperactivity.

in 1998, the huang family welcomed their second child, dongchen, and his older sister easily befriended him before he could even open his eyes. the two are almost joined at the hip for a large amount of their early life together, and jiafen often commented to their parents that they were the handful she was happy to have in her company.

 

what is the you that you've dreamed of? / it wasn't long before chenchen found herself sitting amongst a large amount of other students in the confinements of a classroom she wasn't sure she liked. there were splashes of colour here and there from posters on the walls, and many of the children were just as naive as she happened to be, but somehow the atmosphere surrounding her seemed odd. there was an entire week that she refused to attend school because of how she felt, and only promised to continue her studies because of her mother, who wished for her only daughter to follow in her academic footsteps.

but as she entered fifth grade, she knew that schooling and academics were not the life paths she wanted to embark upon. she continued to do well with her studies to make her parents proud with the results she received, but used a large portion of her study time towards discovering just exactly who she dreamed to be in the future. chenchen asked jiafen one evening what she aspired to be when she was her age, to which her neighbour just replied, "i wanted to live without regrets".

with that in mind, the fifth grader came up with an ultimate aspiration for her life - she would begin living life with absolute happiness. having optimistic outlooks on situations and always being willing to give everything a go were the best ways that she knew to go about doing so, and quickly found that her life had taken a complete one-eighty before she had reached puberty.

 

'cause you are the light that fell on me / junior high school came quickly and everybody seemed to be fixated upon the high school entrance exam that would determine their academic future. but for chenchen, she could not care less about making her way into the greatest high schools on offer (and actually wanted to drop education as soon as she could) and thus went about her studies with a rather relaxed approach. an approach that may have stemmed from an interest in fashion magazines, leading to an interest in the world of modelling and fashion, which would lead to a side aspiration of becoming a professional model.

her parents were wary at first about her ambition but soon came around to being supportive, jiayi realising that there was no way she could pressure her into becoming the high school teacher she was. but every single person around her knew how difficult just gaining one small piece of experience in the industry would prove to be, leaving them wondering just how exactly she planned on achieving her dreams.

 

thank you for meeting me / chenchen researched into the ways that one entered the modelling world, and realised that she would need to contact an agent if she wanted any way of knowing about auditions that were happening around the country. instead of contacting an agency with a self-created profile made with the camera that her brother had received for his previous birthday, the seventh grader decided to ask jiafen if she would be willing to take up the role, to which the neighbour happily obliged.

the first auditions that chenchen attended proved unsuccessful, with many of the casting agents saying that her appearance was desirable but not what they needed at that moment. it took five months for a successful audition to occur, with the chloechen clothing brand that was looking to spread awareness of their fashion to a teenage audience in taiwan during the summer 2008. at first she was only seen wearing some of their clothing on a poster or two inside their store, but soon began appearing in television advertisements, and later billboards in the capital city. it was simple to say that the opportunity had turned into a major success for chenchen's modelling career that only seemed to blossom from there.

it was almost impossible for her to walk around shopping centres in taipei without someone recognising her as the teenager gracing a billboard from a few blocks away. in hsinchu, her classmates took time out of their studies in order to acknowledge that one of her commercials had been seen on television the previous night. and for chenchen, she was ecstatic about the attention.

 

how far can you see all of the world? / in early 2010 she was excited to learn that she would be walking her first runway, with a charity show in the capital for chloechen. at this point, the backstage processes of quickly changing outfits and spending blocks of time sitting in a makeup chair had become somewhat accustomed to the now-sixteen year old female, but still held a feeling of excitement within her. she continued to walk for small runway shows in the country, as well as appear in advertisements for other companies, before earning the chance to appear at the taipei in style fashion week for its fall/winter collection in october that year.

may 2011 saw her also appear on various other fashion week runways around asia, from taipei to shanghai and hong kong, to the tokyo girls collection in japan, and eventually seoul fashion week in south korea where she would earn recognition for the first time outside of her home country. several news outlets in the country dubbed her as a "once in a lifetime beauty" and turned her from a taiwanese fashion model to a south korean sensation. interviewers contacted jiafen at light speed, netizens were attempting to find everything they could about her life, and she was even asked to appear on several television shows in the country.

chenchen participated in her first overseas magazine photoshoot with the july issue of ceci magazine, where she not only graced the cover but also had a multi-page spread. other magazines requested her presence on their covers, some of which she was able to fulfil with an ever-growing schedule, and within a month of going viral in korea she appeared on her first television show. in particular, it was an episode of sbs' running man that trended for several days on naver and proved that she was versatile enough to survive past her admired physical appearance.

 

fly on with your wishes / near the end of the year chenchen had decided to move to south korea and focus on building her career there to new heights, but it was the matter of who would join her that had her family and jiafen in puzzlement. her younger brother was not willing to be separated from her and had defended his choices to move to seoul with her, and in the end jiafen would join them, with both min and jiayi continuing their careers in hsinchu. it was the harsh reality of separation, but they all found that it was for the best.

the following years became hectic for chenchen. she signed an exclusive contract with sidushq that managed her television appearances on a larger scale than that of jiafen and she also earned another nickname, "daredevil beauty", as she blossomed on the variety show circuit. her career that was split between television appearances and modelling proved to be hectic for her, but somehow she found her way through it all and even managed to get a hold of her personal matters as well (which involved several relationships that did not have a fairytale ending).

as of the beginning of 2016 she models the famed jardin de chouette label on runways around the world, and has very recently finished filming for the upcoming movie brother. she originally planned on focusing primarily on her modelling career after the movie's promotional period, but after receiving the casting call for celebrity next door, there was no way she would be turning another television opportunity down.

and that's why i smile / since huang chenchen was a toddler, all she has wanted to achieve in life is the type of happiness that makes one eager to wake up in the morning, and still lives on as they dream their way through the night. in order to do so, she lives each day with a mindset that allows her to see it with a smile on her face, and as a brand new opportunity that is just waiting to be discovered. she avoids any sense of negativity that attempts to falter her on her desired life path, and always looks forward to what the next day has to offer her.

 

i will survive / her outlooks always come with a boosted confidence and sense of adventure, allowing her to attempt everything offered to her at least once in her life, even something that she finds "not right" for her. whether it be to scale a high apartment building or eat the most disgusting of insects, she can do it all with eagerness and end with a smile still plastered on her face. sometimes her willingness can be seen by others as something rather negative, especially if she agrees to something that can have nasty consequences, but that doesn't affect the way that she looks at her life.

 

i see swimming pools and living rooms and aeroplanes / chenchen's quest for absolute happiness can sometimes lead her into rather consequential situations that she never knew would end the way that they would. she once disappeared for a week with a want to experience life from a higher altitude, only to return home and find that a large investigation into her disappearance had been put into place. chenchen can also be naive or completely oblivious to what situations she places herself in, even to the point of where those closest to her have to sit her down and explain what in the world she is planning on doing.

 

but that's all i wanna do right now / she can also be quite stubborn when it comes to someone wanting to change her mind. when she has it set on something she wants to do, she only looks upon it with the positive thoughts, so it is extremely difficult to even attempt at convincing her that what she is going to get herself involved in is not worth what she thinks it is. if someone keeps pestering her, she can even turn into a bit of a child, insisting that she can cut them out of her life by getting rid of their "constant negativity".

 

i hold onto the night you looked me in the eye / chenchen's times of oblivion and naivety can also become large factors behind why she happens to become loyal to someone very quickly. her heart also happens to be the type that welcomes one in with open arms, no matter what first impression they leave upon her, and even those that detest her know that she still has a place for them in her life. sometimes her loyalty and warm heartedness can land her in even more trouble than she began with, and have become the main reason why her romantic relationships have all began and ended with heartbreak (that she obviously sweeps under the rug for a more optimistic approach to the future). but no matter what, she keeps her hopes high for someone to come along and give her the same feeling that her parents have given one another over the many years that they have known one another. this hope of hers has turned her into even more of a hopeless romantic with every year that passes by, and nowadays even the simplest of romantic gestures can have her heart turn into mashed potato.

 

clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth / if you had to sum up huang chenchen with one sentence, it would be that she is the brightness that someone needs in their lives, even if only for a split second. she can supply you with the encouragement and loyalty that may be desperately needed, and challenge you to attempt something that you have never done before with hopes that it will provide you with an adrenaline rush full of happiness. sure, she can be quite the handful on the best of days, but at least she will attempt to raise your spirits to their highest level.

— eating with others / she can handle eating with family or very close friends but if asked on a first date to a restaurant or to an outing with casual friends, she has to decline or negotiate another way to do so. the reason for this is that her ideal eating experience is one of eating a home cooked meal by herself.

— running / ask her to walk for hours a day and she can handle the request without faltering. however, ask her to run and she will deny the request, having already tried it once in her life and finding her style to resemble that of hkt48's miyawaki sakura.

— one / the first two items you will find in her backpack are a book of quotes and a book of poems. if you are trying to look for a packet of gum in there, then it is probably in one of her pockets.

— two / her favourite kpop groups are apink, girls' generation and orange caramel, but holds a special place in her heart for any girl group that comes along with a bright concept because her loyalty towards them occurs even faster than if they were a dark-concept girl group. 
— three / she holds a strong liking towards many jpop girl groups as well, with her favourites being dempagumi.inc, perfume and hkt48. she also likes the rest of the 48 group franchise and hello! project, amongst others.
— four / if asked to choose a favourite boy group, her mind automatically heads towards shinee. she has however began quite the liking towards seventeen, despite them being a rookie group.
— five / chenchen believes that yagami kumi is the cutest person in existence, so whenever she finds someone cute she will give them a nickname that combines that person's name and kumi's nickname (kuumin).
— six / has only tasted coffee once in her life, and has no plans on drinking it ever again. whenever someone asks her how she manages a long day without even one coffee shot, she always thanks her willingness to get out of bed in the morning for allowing her to do so.

family

both chenchen and min find it very easy to admit that they never became as close as they could have been throughout the years, but their bond comes through a mutual respect for what one another has decided to accomplish in their respective occupations.

she respects the helping hand that her father gave his late father throughout the years with their courier business and even cites it as where she received her helpfulness from. he respects how much his only daughter pushes the limits to achieve her ambitions and has commented on several occasions that he wished he carried her optimistic approach to life.

 

▪ wan jiayi (fc. ivy chen) / 46 (b. 1969) / high school science teacher

throughout the years the relationship between mother and daughter has become strained, with the problem lying within jiayi's wish that chenchen follow in her footsteps and face a career as a teacher. there never was feelings of dislike towards one another, but chenchen would often distance herself from her mother to avoid her constant wishes of something she never wanted to become which caused little words exchanged between the two throughout her early life.

this problem has never been fully solved, as she knows that her mother still hopes that deep down, her daughter goes back to high school and strives towards an academic career. but they are on good terms, with no bad feelings and small words of encouragement being shared whenever they have the chance to speak with one another.

although they spent their earliest years almost being connected by the hip, they naturally grew away from one another through their differing interests. however, they still remain supportive of whatever their other sibling decides to pursue in life, despite its consequences.

chenchen is possibly the only person outside of dongchen's social circle that understands his views on the world as he knows it, and knows that his rebellious title is only established from himself standing up for what he believes is right. she was even the first one to congratulate him for landing on the news back in taiwan for defending an old building that, in his words, "does not deserve an irreversible fate".

chenchen first met woobin during the spring/summer seoul fashion week in 2011, where they both promised to keep in touch with one another after beginning their possible friendship on the completely right foot.

he acts more as a dorky older brother than a friend in her life. she cherishes the opportunities they get to work alongside one another, because the career chenchen loves is turned into her ultimate amusement park when woobin is around. that isn't to say that they don't have their calm moments either; in fact, those tend to happen more often than they once predicted they would. but nonetheless, their friendship is quite the cute one that allows chenchen to stop and think to herself, "what happened in my past life for a friendly miracle to happen?"

mbc's quiz to change the world in 2014 saw the nation's foreign sister star alongside one of the year's major trends in orange caramel, but it was the visuals that found themselves developing a good friendship soon after.

the two are more fashion buddies than the dorky sisters that the public labels them as, but that isn't to say that chenchen and jinah aren't close. they regularly chat on the phone and sometimes even find time out of their schedules to meet one another at a local café (where chenchen obviously does not drink the coffee). the fashion advice they have garnered from one another also remains valuable, and always helps to keep both of them on top of what the public sees them endorsing.

chenchen first met the male model through a black-tie function and was automatically captivated by his simple, yet extremely charming, smile that was on her mind for days. she was the one that approached kyunghwan for the possibility of a date in late 2011, which lead into her second relationship, and one she is glad she cannot forget.

being with kyunghwan gave chenchen the chance to experience a relationship outside of the "puppy love" stage that she held with xiuying. although they never reached a point where she was ready to give her ity away, there were still moments of passion captured in the time they were together. however, eleven months into their relationship, chenchen discovered through a work colleague that kyunghwan had been rather rude about her on his private social media accounts. he would inform his friends of she seemed "like a total prude" because she refused to give him the sensual satisfaction he "absolutely desired", and that her brother showcased that "being a nutcase runs in the family".

she was the one that broke off any ties they had one another and even went through the process every stereotypical ex-girlfriend does and burn items that he had left at her seoul apartment. the feeling of being free from a relationship that seemed to require ual stimulation was like a weight being lifted off of her shoulders. as of today she has never said another word to kyunghwan or even acknowledged his presence if they are in a room together, and feels absolutely proud about it.

the third of chenchen's relationships involved yet another model, but instead of meeting jongsuk at an after party, they were introduced to one another through woobin in the beginning of 2013. naturally a friendship bloomed from there, and it wasn't long before they began a relationship that she considers her greatest yet.

chenchen and jongsuk were the epitome of romantic during their time as a couple. every chance they had to initiate skinship was taken with open arms, and always found time out of their schedules to talk to one another, even if just about their respective days. he was also her first in two ways; her first time, and her first public relationship as a celebrity. their relationship was brought to public attention through jongsuk's various visits to the set of mbc's princess aurora, a daily drama where chenchen was portraying a recurring character, and eventually they were confirmed to be together after dispatch captured them on a private date together. however, it was one of the hallyu kings of china that ended their relationship almost two years after it began, citing that their packed schedules were forcing them apart.

they still remain extremely supportive of one another's careers and are always welcome to talk about their romantic connections whenever asked about them by fans (for media, there is another story to be told). chenchen and jongsuk's friendship may have its awkward moments nowadays, but nonetheless they are on very good terms with one another.

look how far we made it / prior to their time together in the celebrity next door world chenchen and soonyoung were familiar with one another to a point where they could consider one another friends. but when they met for the first time, that was pretty much the opposite.

 

you're so pretty it's selfish / the two first met one another backstage at the august 24 2014 episode of sbs' inkigayo, where the seventeen members were participating in orange caramel's comeback stage for "my copycat", and chenchen was giving the trio some friendly support backstage. albeit in a large group setting, soonyoung managed to get in a good sentence or two to the popular model, but it was obvious that the trainee was still flustered at her presence.

 

send melting smiles with your eyes / it was the same television show when they were in one another's presence for a second time. she had visited on jinah's behalf to wish the thirteen-membered boy group good luck in their debut promotions. that night chenchen spoke more with the talkative seungkwan more than any other member, but soonyoung once again managed to get the chance to speak with her. chenchen ended the night remembering him as energetic, whilst soonyoung's opinion of her remained positive yet unfazed.

 

we can achieve anything together / running man would see their third and final encounter prior to the events of celebrity next door, where both were part of the group of lee kwangsoo's guests. the little interactions they had with one another had netizens talking, but nothing else was done to build on the buzz the surrounding the nation's foreign sister and the top rookie group's performance leader.

like hints from destiny / although the last time they managed to speak with one another was a few months ago, chenchen and soonyoung are very happy to be around one another. in fact their friendship has progressed to a point where they can be goofballs without any regrets in the world (especially on screen). they were relieved when they found out that they would be living together for the duration of their stay on celebrity next door, because instead of being stuck with another famous figure that were just simply a brand new acquaintance of, they were placed with a friend.

 

no one affects me like you / but no matter what happens when they are together, from dancing in their pyjamas at 3am to attempts at eating ice cream with chopsticks, soonyoung still remains flustered. he finds it hard to believe that he is sharing a house with one of the most popular models in the country, and a rather beautiful one at that. he always attempts to push these thoughts of his to the back of his mind when he is around her, to make sure that she never notices that deep inside, he is practically wetting himself whilst trying to not make a fool of himself.

 

what's love got to do with it / honestly though, chenchen would never notice at all. one reason is because she is completely oblivious to those feelings of his and is probably focused more on what she is doing anyway, and the other reason is because she has her own feelings to deal with. prior to the filming of the show, she had never thought of soonyoung as any more than a friend and junior that she could place her support in. but as they spend time living together, she has discovered that maybe there is something more. but she is happy just as things are between them, being one half of the goofy chenyoung duo that is taking south korean netizens by storm.

love will leave a sign / on screen they remain friends, but their status behind the cameras is a completely different tale. chenchen has began to notice that those romantic feelings for soonyoung keep continuously knocking on the front door of her heart, but still insists that she is happy as she is and nothing should be changed about that. however, soonyoung has seen the signs from his model roommate, or maybe is just getting them confused for his own that have taken the place of his initial flustered feelings towards her.

 

my heart's placard / so ultimately they keep up the goofball facade for the sake of their variety image, but when the cameras are gone from their sight, their respective crushes on one another have driven their friendship into unknown territory. 'do we like each other like that?' and 'should we do something about this?' are questions that are constantly bugging them several times throughout the day.

 

isn't this the season of love? / eventually it is chenchen that cannot take the knocking anymore and allows her feelings to break down the front door, and she decides to confess to soonyoung exactly how a hopeless romantic would (with the roses scattered along the floor of their house and all). she has pushed herself into even more unknown territory by doing so, because whilst she loves her romance, she has never romantically confessed to anybody in her lifetime. soonyoung is in a similar boat, because unlike chenchen, he has never been confessed to.

 

you're alive in your own way / it is an absolute miracle that soonyoung accepts her confession, because there would have been a chance that it could have been the ultimate break of her optimistic streak if the opposite occurred. their relationship never occurs for the cameras, as they make sure to be aware of what they are doing for the sake of their careers. but when they are allowed time to establish their romantic connections, chenchen is reminded slightly of her relationship with jongsuk with the levels of romance she experiences around a cheesy, yet extremely caring, soonyoung. except something about soonyoung feels even more right, and it makes her the happiest person in the world. it is unknown whether they will go public about their development after departing the show deep into the future, but one thing that is certain is that they are still your resident goofball couple.

FUN FACTS
— one / the two have their own handshake which over time has made their other cast members envious because deep down, they wished they had a handshake as well.
— two / most couples usually have matching bracelets or phone covers, but chenchen and soonyoung have matching jackets as their couple item. the reason is because matching jackets would do more than just showcasing their relationship close friendship in the public.
— three / if soonyoung isn't sure what type of present to get chenchen, he usually just gets her a card that is signed by her favourite seventeen member, wonwoo. but now that he has decided to save actual presents for the most important occasions, she currently is in possession of so many wonwoo-signed cards that she can no longer keep track of how many she has.
— four / expanding on their antics of eating ice cream with chopsticks, that started when chenchen obliviously started eating her dessert like that and soonyoung pointed it out to her. every time that they get ice cream, they attempt to eat it with chopsticks with constant hope of success.

— five / chenchen's ultimate dream date is one that involves a candlelit dinner that looks over an amazing city view. soonyoung promised her that she will be able to make that date a reality one day via her "star in shining armour".

— six / soonyoung aspires to beat yagami kumi as the cutest person chenchen has ever seen.

— seven / their favourite place to visit together on jeju island is the amusement park not only because the adrenaline rush excites chenchen, but because their merchandise is simply too cute.

— eight / chenchen loves to sing soonyoung chinese lullabies before they go to sleep at their house. he is the only person that she has ever done this with, as it is an achievement that even her own brother hasn't accomplished.

comments — firstly i apologise for creating a novel in the background section, but i tried to shorten it as much as my brain would allow me to. and even though it said in the cheat sheet that you preferred applicants to be full korean, once i read the description for this particular plotline, i could not help but use kiku as a face claim. but other than that, i hope you like chenchen! she is definitely the most detailed character i have created in my life XD. and once again thank you for creating this fic because the idea is absolute perfection.
