With her long chestnut brown hair tumbling down her back and her innocently beautiful face, its no wonder that her presence makes people's heads turn. Jaeun's slightly wavy hair is chestnut brown with natural light brown highlights, and stops a little above her waist. Her skin is fair and clear with almost no flaws. She has a thin, almost invisible scar that runs from her left wrist to her elbow from a minor accident, and a long pale scar that is on the back of her head (it is hidden beneath her hair). She has light brown eyes with double eyelids, and a mole next to her left eye. Her lips are a pale pink, and both of her ears are pierced. When she laughs, her eyes slightly curl up. Her body is thin, and lean from her years of training as an ice skater. Her fingers are slightly calloused from accidentally pricking her fingers with a needle several times.

Song Jaeun is fashionable, but with no set style. Her entire wardrobe doesn't give off a specific vibe like innocent or elegant. Her clothes ranges from joggers to skirts, shirts to dresses, and bright colors to monochrome. So really, her wardrobe is diverse. The outfits that she picks out to wear depends on her mood or the occasion. If it was finals week, Jaeun would most likely pair a burgundy sweatshirt and black joggers. If she felt happy today, a yellow tee and white shorts. If she felt like it was a good day to wear something comfortable, a navy blue sweater with black ripped skinny jeans, and etc. The outfits she pieces together are never out of style and always matches. She's also good at predicting the next trend, so she'll wear something before it starts trending throughout the world. Jaeun's hairstyle depends on her outfit also (ex: a messy bun that goes along with her lazy outfit). You won't see Jaeun without an accessory. It can be a necklace, earrings, hats, or watches. as long as the accessory matches one of her outfits, Jaeun most likely owns it. As for her shoes, Jaun has a whole closet full of them. Her shoes are pretty diverse in style, and she isn't afraid to wear 6-in heels. Half of her clothes are her own handmade creations, and therefore are originals.

Everybody in Donghwa knows that Jaeun is the epitome of sassiness. This girl’s sassiness is legendary, and not many can go up against her when she goes off (an example, you need to watch this, trust me). Sometimes her sassiness is innocuous to others (a comment about something here and there; “The only girl that’ll love him is his mother” Jaeun whispers to the squad), and other times it’s deleterious (especially when somebody insults her friends, her clothes, and herself; “Aw, that’s cute, you think I have no style. You know what else is cute? Your tissue stuffed bra.”). Jaeun is sensitive to other people’s mood and feelings, and can pick up fairly quickly if somebody is having a bad day (and as a result, tone done her sassiness and antics for the person until they feel better; doesn’t mean she’ll completely stop though). Jaeun’s perceptiveness allows her the ability to read a situation, and a person’s true motives/personality. She usually allows herself to wait out a little before acting on her reading.

With her head up high and confident gait down the hallway, Jaeun knows she's fabulous and isn't afraid to flaunt it. Her confidence is impossibly high and her posture screams cockiness. Always one to counter back with a comment how they’re just jealous how they can’t compare to her when she hears somebody comment on how shes too high over her head (“Remember when I asked for your opinion? Me neither.”) She is also childish, stubbornly believing in something (even if she knows that it's not possible; “You’re entitled to your wrong opinion, that's fine.”) and once in awhile whining about how somebody insulted her style (of course, after sassing the person who insulted her). Always trying to have fun, Jaeun is extremely playful. She likes to tease others and doing antics that make people laugh. Often times, her playfulness edges into mischievousness, with her pulling pranks on other people that only she would appreciate (and usually getting away with it too much to the anger of, well, everybody). Jaeun’s playfulness can also become flirtatious, making people flustered with her winks and pick up lines.

Growing up in a household where expectations are very high, Jaeun is a very ambitious and competitive person. She strives to be the best at everything and won't back down until she's finished with everything. She is also extremely patient and diligent with her work as she doesn't want to mess up anything that would hinder her (“Slow and steady wins the race, and I’m sure as heck going to win with this face.”). Jaeun has shown to be creative, designing and creating all her current ice skating outfits and half of her wardrobe. She is also very creative with her pranks (often creating new pranks or making classic pranks into her own).

Jaeun is really hard to please, and working in a group with her can be a total nightmare. Everything has to be excellent in her eyes. She's also really hard on herself when it comes to ice skating and designing outfits. She's often unimpressed with people’s choice of clothes and her face clearly shows it (“Really Soohyun? Matching orange with purple? No wonder people call you a tornado, you’re a natural disaster”). Her judgmental remarks often puts people off, and people can rarely take her rants on the horrible fashion she has to see on a daily basis. But perhaps her worst trait is how manipulative she can be. It's scary to those around her how good she is at getting what she wants. Twisting her words around, Jaeun can get people to do almost anything for her. Thankfully, most of her manipulations are harmless (clean her skates, get her a drink, etc.), but that doesn't mean she isn't capable to do worse.

 

❆ “Don't get bitter, just get better” - Alyssa Edwards
In the foster care system of Canada, there was a young child who was left abandoned in the bustling city of Vancouver. Bouncing from one foster family to another, Jaeun never really felt a sense of belonging, often moving to a different home before she felt comfortable. Each family either ignoring her completely or interacting awkwardly with her, it came sort of a relief when 5 year old Jaeun was told somebody was going to adopt her. When the news first hit her ears, she experienced a range of emotions: shock, disbelief, happiness, curiosity, relief and finally uncertainty. Would her new family love her? There was three people in her new family: a man with an awkward smile, a woman with a confident posture, and a pretty girl with curious eyes. She took slow, uncertain steps towards them, and when in front of them, they engulfed her in a hug. She cried.
As days went by, Jaeun warmed up to her new family and was seen smiling all the time in the house. Her father still was distant, but she was too distracted with the love that was showered towards her by her mother and older sister to notice.
She quickly learned that her sister, Song Haerin, was a musical prodigy, talented in the art of playing the piano and quickly picking up the violin. A look of wonder and awe would be shown on Jaeun’s face whenever she would walk in her older sister practicing. Her mother, Song Sojin, quickly signed Jaeun up for piano lessons in hope that she would be just like Haerin. When her mother was unsatisfied with her progress after just a few months, she signed Jaeun up for flute lessons instead. Jaeun seemed better with the flute, but it still wasn’t enough. The disappointment in her mom’s face was too much for her, and she tried to improve to please her mother but no matter how much she tried, she just couldn’t be like her older sister. Her mom seemed to grow distant, and her older sister became an elevated figure whom she couldn’t catch up with. Jaeun was beginning to feel the edges of loneliness.
After a year and a half in the Song household, news hit the family that Sojin was pregnant with a baby boy! Jaeun was going to be an older sister! Giddy with happiness, Jaeun anxiously waited for the baby to come. When the baby was born, he was named Song Jihoon. Jaeun smiled seeing the baby, and thought that maybe he will become her friend. The newest addition was brought home, and with the homecoming grew the distance between her and the rest of the family. All the attention was given to Jihoon, and Jaeun was left with the feeling of abandonment. She tried to catch their attention again, but every effort seemed futile. The drawing she made at school that got a ribbon for? Put aside for baby pictures of Jihoon. The certificate she got for finishing the second level for the flute? It only received a fake smile and nod from her mom.She started to resent her little brother.
The only time she wouldn't feel lonely was at school where she made friends. Jaeun loved her friends, and always asked to go over to one of her friend’s house to play dress up in order to escape the feeling of loneliness back home. It was at a friend’s birthday party a year after her younger brother was born where she found her home: the ice rink. Her friend invited everybody in their class to go ice skating for her birthday, and Jaeun was excited. When she first stepped on the ice rink, she slipped and fell. This happened a few more times, until she picked it up and was slowly gliding through the ice. Oh, the thrill she felt when skating. The biting cold nipped at her nose and her was wet with melted ice, but the joy she felt was indescribable. The day ended with breaking an arm from a particularly nasty fall, but it didn’t change her love for the ice rink. After that day, she would visit the ice rink once a week, paying her admission and rental skates with her weekly allowance and lying to her mother that she was going over to a friend’s house when in reality she was going to the rink across her school. She quickly picked up the basics from discreetly watching the other kids getting lessons, and sometimes a coach would kindly give her advice. When her mother found out what she was actually doing, she came to the ice rink in anger and pulled her daughter aside to give her a scolding. When they were just about to leave the rink, one of the coaches came up to her mother and asked the life-changing question, “Have you ever considered in ice skating lessons for your daughter? She's a natural!”
She was grounded for a week,but when her punishment was over, her mother quickly put her in ice skating lessons. Jaeun was thrilled and worked extremely hard. With every competition she won, her mom’s proud smile was enough to get Jaeun to work even harder despite figuring out that her mother liked the attention Jaeun’s achievement gave her. She felt her mother’s love again, and she wasn’t going to lose it.
She moved to Donghwa at the age of 10 after a teary goodbye with all her friends and her coach at the ice rink. Her father received a job offer in South Korea from his company to manage several banks around a certain area. Thrown into her motherland with only knowing the basics of the language, she struggled to fit in. Her mother hired private coaches for her to continue her ice skating lessons in Donghwa so she spent most of her time in the rink then hanging out with other people her age. The first 3 years were a struggle, with Jaeun having to learn the language and not many were willing to break from their circle of friends to get to know her.  During those three years, however, she began to spend more time with her little brother more causing her to put aside the resentment she had for him and try to be more like an older sister for him.
She learned how to sew her first year in Donghwa from her mother’s lesson and became interested in designing and creating clothes. Jaeun made all her ice skating outfits, making her mark in the ice skating world with her grace on the ice and her fashionable outfits seen at the rink. So, along with ice skating, Jaeun met the other love of her life: fashion designing.
She met the squad by accident, bumping into them while rushing out of school to get to the rink. Jaeun wasn't looking where she was going and ran into a guy really hard causing both of them to sprawl all over the floor. She apologized quickly in accented Korean (not before muttering under her breath in English), and ran out the building the next day. Afterwards, she just kept seeing them everywhere, and they kept coming up to her much to her embrrassment as she couldn't understand much of what they were saying (though she was too proud to say she couldn't understand). This eventually led to her becoming (best) friends with the squad (especially after she found a buddy named Nadiya Heo, who she can rant to about their peers' fashion disasters. Nadiya in return rants to her about the bad ballet she recently watched, and Jaeun pretends to understand what she's saying in Russian with Jack Frost in the background making up funny translations in her head). It was hard for her to hang out with them with her busy schedule and competitions, but she always made time to hang out with them (sometimes the squad even convinces her to miss out on a practice after threats of taking away her sewing kit). The squad helped her learn Korean a lot, and adjust to life in Donghwa.
Everything was going great for her until a few months before she turned 18. Her younger brother grew up to be extremely intelligent, the top of his class constantly without fail. With greatness, comes obstacles. As a result of his rank in class, he was often bullied by the others and the older students. While walking home from the rink, Jaeun saw her brother being bullied by the older students in his school on top of a frozen lake. Walking up to them in anger, Jaeun’s eyes widened in horror when she saw a brick in a person’s hand that was aimed at her brother. She took off in a sprint towards her brother, and quickly spread her arms out wide so the brick wouldn’t hit her brother. The brick hit the back of her head hard, and she crumpled onto the icy floor. The boys who were bullying Jihoon quickly ran off in fear of what they did, causing the ice to break around Jaeun and Jihoon. Jaeun weakly pushed Jihoon away from her to run. She saw her blood slowly trickling down the ice, and for once in her life the cold ice seemed frightening to her. The warmth she felt when on ice was gone, and replaced with fear of the unknown. Then the ice broke, and she plunged into the dark freezing water.
She woke up in a hospital room, and was discharged a week later. The event left a permanent mark in her. When she was pushed by her mom to go back to rink, she received a panic attack from standing on the ice and fainted at the spot. The one place where she felt at home became a nightmare for her. She couldn’t stand being near the ice rink or frozen bodies of water, and would flinch at the mention of ice skating. Her friends tried to get her to come back to ice skating, but her fear was too much for her. She quit ice skating, and her homemade ice skating outfits were shoved in the back of her closet. She closed herself off from the loss of her 'home.' Eventually the squad knocked some sense back into her, and Jaeun continued life. Currently, she is majoring in fashion design (and a minor in fashion marketing) at a university. She is focusing on fashion to put her ice skating days behind her, but the thought always remained in her mind.

Jaeun's father is pretty awkward and distant with her. She suspects that he isn't good with kids (or young people in general). Sometimes he'll give her an awkward pat on the head or a weird side hug when congratulating her. Jaeun appreciates the effort, and sometimes wishes she was closer to him. He works a lot since he's the only one who earns money in their household, and pays for Jaeun's lessons. He's somehow ususally spot on with his gifts for Jaeun much to her amazement.
ADOPTIVE MOTHER ❆ Samantha Song Sojin (53) || Stay-Home Mom || impatient, attention-seeking, cheerful, elegant || 6.5/10
Jaeun is a bit closer to mother seeing as she was the one who took care of her. Sojin is always fussy with her kids, making sure that they have everything, and always bringing them to their lessons. Her mother really likes the attention she receives from her children being talented in their area of expertise. Jaeun's mother seems fake to Jaeun's eyes at time, but she knows that her mother cares for her. Its just that her love for attention sometimes overpowers her care for her children.
ADOPTIVE OLDER SISTER ❆ Hannah Song Haerin (22) || Student @ Julliard || conceited, blunt, passionate, clever || 5.5-6/10
Her older sister always seemed a bit distant to her. Haerin would help her in her homework, and cook for her sometimes. Jaeun, in return, would make her older sister some clothes if she asked for it (especially for performances). They don't see each other often since both parties are often busy with practices or their own friends. They do have conversations and they do care for each however.
ADOPTIVE YOUNGER BROTHER ❆ Johnathan Song Jiho (12); Middle School Student || lazy, gullible, intelligent, optimistic || 7-7.5/10
Jaeun is closest to her little brother out of the whole family. Even though she resented him a little at first for a situation they couldn't control, she saw past that and tried to be there for him whenever she could. Jaeun and Jihoo played with each other a lot as a kid, and she knows some of his secrets. She usually stands up for him against his bullies (its not like he can't stand up for himself, he just doesn't want to go to the trouble in doing that). She doesn't understand how he can be so smart but so lazy (and a bit too uncaring in her opinion). Their friendship still has a lot of room to grow in, but their interactions are so cute.  

THE #SQUAD ❆  Jaeun was extremely close with the squad pre-fear of ice era. She bumped into them by accident, but she considered it to be a fateful encounter. They helped her in adjusting to Donghwa and helped with her pronounciation with Korean (becuase even after two years in Korea, her pronounciation was pretty bad since she didn't talk to people due to her busy schedule). She would always try to find time to hang out with them, and told them a lot about her life. She trusts them with her secrets, worries in life, and fears; they would trust her with theirs also. After her incident with Jihoo's bullies however, Jaeun closed herself off for awhile. The squad tried helping her, but she wouldn't let them. Finally after the constantt prodding from the squad, she opened up to them again, and is reverting back to her old self.


❆ OF BEAUTY AND GRACE (and Rants): Nadiya Heo
With both friends centering their lives around the art of dance, it comes to no surprise that they hit it off from the start. Their love for dance, whether ballet or ice skating, was really what made Jaeun join the squad. In the squad, they are both in charge of being graceful, because the rest of the squad be tripping over air every 5 seconds (‘that’s an exaggeration Jaeun’). You often see them together discussing the sadness of how inflexible the rest of the squad is (/is at PE and stretching before class/ “they can’t even reach their toes?”). Nadiya often gives tips to Jaeun on how to stretch properly and maintain her flexibility. Going to Nadiya’s recitals is exciting for Jaeun, and she is often amazed at how the whole thing is executed (because wow, they can walk on their toes?! How is that not cool??). She’s been itching to make the costumes for Nadiya’s next recital. Jaeun was inspired by Nadiya’s ballet performance of the Swan Lake so when she was given the opportunity to dance with another male figure skater for an opening for nationals, she chose the theme of Swan Lake (video of program here; its so good). Jaeun is often trying to get Nadiya eat more food, because she understands the pressure of being super skinny for their respective dance but Jaeun also knows that her health is more important. Ranting to each other is also a big part of their friendship. Jaeun often asks Nadiya to try on her clothes for a project and if she can be her model for the catwalk (since her walk is oh so graceful). After Jaeun’s fear of ice came about, Nadiya tried helping Jaeun overcome her fear so she can go back ice skating, but seeing Jaeun’s reaction towards the ice rink caused her to stop her efforts (for now). (Their friendship doesn't have to be like this, i don't mind if its different)


NADIYA AND JAEUN INTERACTION:

Nadiya: /sees a picture that catches her eyes/ you know, the squad should match clothes one day, wouldn’t that be cool?
Jaeun: /wrinkles nose/ I don’t know, why would I want to match with Himchan?
Nadiya: /shrugs/ whatever, it was just a suggestion
/the next day, Nadiya answers the door to her house/
Nadiya: /yawns/ why did you come so early? It’s only /checks clocks/ FIVE IN THE MORNING? I need my sleep
Jaeun: /shoves a bag at her/ I made this for you last night. I thought over about what you said yesterday, and what the heck, why not? I stayed up last night and consumed like 10 cups of coffee. No biggeeeeee.
Nadiya: 10 CUPS OF COFFEE? IS THAT EVEN HEALTHY? Wait, how about-
Jaeun: Her outfit is in the bag too.
Nadiya: And the boys?
Jaeun: Screw them! They aren’t worthy enough to match with us.


SQUAD INTERACTION:
Jaeun: /sends group text/ GUYS COME OVER TO MY HOUSE. ITS AN EMERGENCY.
Squad: /rushes to her house in panic/ WHAT IS IT?
Jaeun: /shoves an outfit at each of them/ Go change into these! I need to test it out for a project!!!
Squad: THAT’S IT?
Jaeun: What, that is an emergency! GO GO GO.
/squad comes out with their outfit/
Love Interest: /looks down at his outfit in disgust/ Why am I wearing a dress?
Jaeun: /snickers and takes out phone for pictures/ I can’t believe you actually wore it. I’m totally using this for blackmail.

 

❆ like a brother: jaeun views jack frost like an older brother. they act a lot like siblings would (bickering endlessly, having inside jokes, influencing each other one way or another, etc,).
❆ allergies: jaeun is allergic to walnuts, mushrooms, pollen, and dust. if jaeun accidentally eats walnuts, she gets rashes all over her arms and neck. she gets hives when she eats a lot of mushrooms (a small amount is okay). she sneezes a lot when exposed to a lot of dust and pollen (especially dust; prepare for a sneezing storm; if somebody is tinkerbell and uses pixie dust, omg rip jaeun)
❆ korean: jaeun pretty much is fluent in korean, but she still has some moments where she has to stop to think about what a word might mean (as she translates korean into english in her head).
❆ popcorn: (unrelated to the story unless the squad watches a movie in the story) what's the best kind of popcorn? the one from the movie theaters of course. jaeun would go to the movie theater just to buy popcorn. she wouldn't even pretend to look at the list of movies, she'll go straight up to the food counter and go straight back out to munch on the heavenly popcorn (extra butter yummmm).
❆ fork: when given a choice, jaeun would pick to use a fork than a pair of chopsticks.
❆ hands: jaeun has a deep appreciation for them, without her hands, how will she say the classic talk to the hand? "talk to the hand, because the booty don't care."
❆ super innocent and/or sweet people: "theres's something about them that doesn't seem right. they remind me of my mom whenever she meets somebody new. *shudders*"
❆ people who insults her clothes: they're going to wish they never said that.
❆ inner fangirl: there is only one person who can make jaeun act like a middle school fangirl: Yuzuru Hanyu, the Japanese 21 year old male figure skater Olympic gold medalist.
❆ makeup: Jaeun cannot stand wearing it. She firmly believes that makeup is not to be worn unless you have a huge pimple to cover up. Plus it gives you wrinkles faster. (Red lipstick is fine however, but its only worn by Jaeun when shes wearing white so her face doesn't look washed out)
❆ candy: jaeun doesn't like eating candy. she's weird like that.
❆ liars: if they're going to lie, then they might as well don't talk at all. "don't talk to me like you know me if you don't even know your own self. because girl, you ain't worth my time."
❆ tv & books: (totally unrelated to the story) jaeun watches a lot English shows when she has some time to herself (like never). she likes Kim Possible, and Once Upon a Time. she also reads books once in awhile. so far, her favorite serie is the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (sci-fi, fantasy, and fairy tale all wrapped in a bundle). she doesn't like korean dramas, and the only korean movie shes willing to watch is the Werewolf Boy. She prefers English novels over Korean novels.
❆ thanatophobia (fear of death): who isn't afraid of death?
❆ birds who fly over her head: if you see jaeun running around randomly while looking at the sky, you know the reason why now. "I'm not afraid of birds, just their poop."
❆ lepdopterophobia (fear of butterflies): What was that scream? Oh, i think Jaeun just saw a butterfly. "butterflies are spiders in disguise. they may be beautiful, but so was the devil."
❆ cyrophobia (fear of ice): jaeun's fear of ice caused her to stop ice skating. being near a frozen body of water or an ice rink causes her to hyperventilate, and shake uncontrollably.
❆ fashion designing: jaeun hopes to become a fashion designer (maybe even create her own brand, but little steps first) in the future one day. she knows how to sew and can draw designs on a sketchpad.
❆ role model: her role model is kim yuna (the queen).
❆ children: jaeun absolutely loves children, and likes to play with them and have fun.
❆ head tilt and finger tapping: when jaeun is deep in thought, she tilts her head and taps her finger against something.
❆ puffy cheeks with a slip of English: jaeun puffs her cheeks out and mutters her complaints in English when frustrated or annoyed.
❆ ice skating: jaeun is extremely skilled in ice skating (having a natural talent for it), she used to compete in nationals before and even placing third the last year she participated. she was a female figure skater.
❆ flute: she still knows how to play the flute due to her old lessons and maintaining the knowledge of playing the flute by practicing it at least twice a week.
❆ hand movement: when she's talking and really into it, she moves her arms around to emphasize her point
❆ snapping: jaeun snaps a lot in the middle of sassing a person. *does the z formation*
❆ oreo milkshakes: she likes to reward herself with an oreo milkshake after an accomplishment.
❆ sewing kit: jaeun always has a sewing kit on hand (she never leaves the house without it). it has three different needles, and different color threads.
❆ friends' clothes: sometimes jaeun would design clothes for her friends to wear as a present or a thank you gift. they sometimes ask for her advice also.
❆ winter child: jaeun's birthday was on the winter solstice (the winter solstice of 1997). winter is her favorite season as she prefers cold weather.
❆ quotes: jaeun likes to collect quotes (inspirational, funny, etc.) and put them in her room and sketchbook. (similar to the quotes in this app)
❆ stretching: jaeun still continues to stretch her muscles (to maintain flexibility and calm her mind; its a stress reliever for her).
❆ stay warm: when jaeun is sitting down and is getting cold, she'll put her hands underneath her thighs to keep them warm.

IDL PERSON Jack Frost Kim Himchan

IDEAL TYPE Jaeun likes a guy who tries to act all cool and mighty, but in reality is just the most adorable person ever. he is the type of guy who would say, "I have swag," but everybody would deny that comment making him pout cutely. She likes a guy who is funny, and a little weird. someone who is the eye of her tornado (as in he is calm compared to her restless nature), and knows her inside out. They'll bicker a lot, but when their backs are turned, there would be smiles on their faces. She likes someone who knows how to have fun, and understands her. It doesn't matter if he isn't the best looking in the world, as long as he truly loves her and will always be there for her.

CLOSENESS  They're pretty close considering how they're best friends (along with the rest of the squad). They bicker a lot more than they talk, but when they do have a conversation, its when one of them has a problem and needs to talk it out. They know some things about each other that the rest of the squad doesn't. 7.5-8/10
