on the 17th of april, 1997, kim jaehan and min seulri gave birth to kim sehyun, seven years after they gave birth to their first child, kim jonghyun. sehyun had trouble adapting to school and life in general, and the between jonghyun and sehyun wasn't helping. sehyun envied those who were close to their siblings because unlike them, jonghyun and sehyun weren't close at all — jonghyun was the type to lock himself in his room everyday and sing to himself, making music and yelling 'don't disturb me, i'm working!' to sehyun or sehyun's parents when they knocked on his door to ask him to eat dinner. when she went to school she would fabricate long-winded stories about how 'jjong oppa' helped her with the homework that the teacher gave out the day before or how 'jjong oppa' made her favourite ddeokbokki because he knew that she felt down. it was all lies, of course — sehyun was never a topic of interest when it came to kim jonghyun. all she was was a pesky nuisance, a useless addition to the family, a new burden to carry. jaehan and seulri owned a chicken restaurant that they milked and grew since jonghyun was three, and it was both the source of the family's income and the couple's pride and joy. the two spent almost their whole day there, and with sehyun's parents always in the shop serving fried chicken and beer and her older brother constantly locked in his room alone working on his aspirations and chasing his passions, sehyun was left alone in the house, with second-hand toys that were always a generation older than what all the other kids were playing with in her school. even during parent-teacher meetings, her parents would pass, saying that they couldn't leave the shop and jonghyun, although appointed by her parnts to attend the meeting, never did go, saying that he was either 'busy with schoolwork', 'busy with friends' or 'busy with my.. stuff' in general, leaving sehyun wondering if she ever did anything wrong and her teachers wondering why the only student whose guardians didn't show up was a girl from a seemingly-normal family who didn't have any problems at all. the lack of love and care shown to sehyun drove her to madness and she became desperate for attention, the yearning to be noticed and the loneliness started getting to her stronger and stronger as she grew older and prettier. despite being in a middle-income family and the family not having any fights or anything in general, sehyun almost wished that she was born again as a different person, even if she'd end up in poverty or such. what was the use if you were just a shadow in a family, not even really a real part? the only reason why her family had no problems or conflicts at all was because no one ever talked to each other, everyone caught up with their own lives. everyone had known what they wanted to do in life — sehyun's parents with managing the chicken shop, jonghyun with pursuing his passion in singing. but what about little sehyun? no one ever told her what to do. and if no one told her what to do, what was she to do? how would a little girl survive in this cruel, harsh world on her own without any guidance of any sorts?
sehyun grew up using the trial-and-error method, and living off copied suggestions from others. there wasn't really a kim sehyun in this world, just mere copy-and-pastes of other people mashed together into a girl. how was she to know what kind of personality would be likable to others if she didn't copy other people? it's just logic, isn't it? so the lying began, the cheating began, and as sehyun discovered makeup and fashion, she became the multiple-faceted kim sehyun. no one ever knows who she is — even she doesn't know. she has a scary ability to change herself to be liked by others depending on who they are. they say it's called adaptability, but her groupmates know better. sehyun's just a plain phony.
when jonghyun debuted in 2008 in shinee, sehyun's popularity in school suddenly shot up. she was just 11 then, and everyone knew shinee. she carried this newfound popularity with a grateful heart, and suddenly she yearned to follow the footsteps of her older brother, who had finally achieved his dreams after the many years of training and staying in his room himself. sehyun didn't know much about what trainee life was like — it wasn't like jonghyun ever told her anyway. so for two years, sehyun unsuccessfully tried out at different companies to be accepted as a trainee. back then sehyun wasn't yet all that pretty — puberty hadn't even struck her yet. it was only in 2010 when sehyun was thirteen that she finally got accepted at jyp entertainment, but only for the fact that she was jonghyun's sister and she might have some growth, and by then her face wasn't all that bad. her angelic and innocent charms won over the judging panel, anyway, saying that she could be jyp's next suzy. trainee life at jyp was hard because the standards were so high and there were so many other trainees hoping to get into jyp's new girl group. sehyun constantly felt alone and althogh the trainees there were nice enonugh and she got along with most of them, she always felt compared and stressed due to not being able to keep up with everyone else. after two years at jyp they transferred her to sm, saying that she would not be chosen to participate in 'sixteen' so there was a slim chance of her debuting anytime soon. trainee life at sm was a lot more difficult for sehyun than at jyp. unlike the trainees who were relatively easy to get along with, trainees in sm were constantly gossiping about 'jonghyun sunbaenim's untalented little sister' behind her back and she watched as the trainees around her got praised for their talent while she struggled to keep up with everyone else. "they say all the talent went to the brother, while the little sister just doesn't know what to be, so she copies everyone else." sehyun was continuously and constantly hurt by the jealous girls around her that watched her grow prettier and prettier and gain attention for her looks. she didn't even really miss her parents — it wasn't like they would ever miss her, anyway. jonghyun hardly acknowledged her presence, but even so, everyone in sm knew that the two were related. they were the so-called next power duo after the jung sisters... besides the fact that sehyun was much less talented than the three mentioned earlier. unlike jonghyun, who spent most of his trainee days practicing hard alone, sehyun spent more time socializing and by the first year as a trainee, she knew most of the trainees by names and even some idols knew her thanks to the 'jonghyun's little sister' tag. criticism from trainers were harsh and they really hurt when she first joined, but after a while, ironically, she got used to it. sehyun learnt to tune out the 'why aren't you half as talented as your brother?' and 'you're just pretty. . that's all you have.' and focused more on trying to keep up ( and failing, to be honest ). it was painful seeing those around her who had trained shorter than her debut before her - red velvet's joy, who wasn't even part of smrookies, yeri, for goodness sake. she even knew some of the exo members — chanyeol and kai were two of them. she went out with chanyeol for two dates secretly when they were still trainees, but it didn't work out because they just didn't have that click. in fact, most of sehyun's love life was spent in sm, what with her dating chanyeol, crushing on sehun, her brother's groupmate minho being her ultimate eyecandy and taeyong asking her out. basically half of the trainee population couldn't stand her, and the other quarter tolerated her and the last quarter were either her friends or had some sort of relationship with her. but finally, after five long years of training, sehyun managed to debut in pinocchio as the face of the group and sub-vocal. sehyun was naturally elated, of course — it was the best present an eighteen year old could get. her excitement was slightly dampened by the phone call she made to her parents where their reaction to their baby girl debuting was just a mere "oh, sehyun, you're debuting? that's great! oh wait, hold on, a customer just came. i can't talk to you right now, sehyun-ah.. it's peak hour, the chicken shop's really busy, kakao me later, alright?" jonghyun didn't have much more of a reaction either, besides a cold "oh? congrats then, sehyun. wishing you luck..?" it was pathetic, really, how much her family cared about her. but she didn't let that get her all that down, because she was finally debuting. kim sehyun was finally debuting. kim sehyun who they called stupid, worthless, useless and just a pretty face was actually ing debuting. though she was not all that thrilled with the ceo's choice of groupmates, sehyun didn't think much then and accepted it, just happy that she finally got a chance to show herself off to the world.

themselves to each other after taeyong first joined
the group. taeyong became well-known around the
trainees soon for his good looks and boy
attitude leaving sehyun behind wondering if he
was ever like this back in incheon. as she heard
new rumors about taeyong spread through the
trainees like wildfire every now and then about
who his latest was, sehyun ignored it and
continued with her daily life. the two weren't really
close until when taeyong walked past sehyun
trying her heart out to sing iu's peach ( with much
difficulty, of course, what with her singing ability ).
it was just a normal scene, but seeing sehyun's
'innocent' side made him see her in a different
light. it was weird, but taeyong had found his new
target - shinee's little sister the next yoona
kim sehyun. when sehyun stepped out of the
practice room only to find taeyong with a small
smirk on his face, saying "i've been waiting" all she
was was confused - she even looked left and right
because she thought he was referring to someone
else. the start of their relationship got off weird
then because of him - all his usual moves didn't
work on sehyun, she was either too naive to get it
or just didn't realize at all but that just made
taeyong even more determined to win sehyun
over. from helping sehyun out with her practices
and defending her when other trainees talked
about her to walking her back to her place
where she resided with her cousin, taeyong began
spending almost the whole of his time with the
clueless girl who just taught she had gained a
new best friend. taeyong took sehyun's first kiss
— by accident, apparently. sehyun was reaching
for a speaker above a shelf she couldn't reach and
taeyong stepped in to help her, and he tripped
over her foot on the way and fell on top of her,
in the process landing his lips on hers and.. feeling

the first time she felt butterflies as hard as that.

question: you probably mentioned this in your background already, but would you describe how you got into sm entertainment and how you got chosen to be in pinocchio?
answer: um. well, uh, i auditioned for a couple of companies back in 2010, and surprisingly jyp accepted me! i trained two years there and it was pretty fun there, but after i didn't make the cut for 6mixx and sixteen, jyp sunbaenim decided not to renew my contract and referred me to sm, who fortunately accepted me ( even though i had auditioned the first time back in 2010 and got rejected ). i'm glad i'm in the same company as jjong oppa though! coughs. anyway, uhm. i'm not very sure, actually, i mean - what's behind the process of choosing again? uh. . i'm not really sure, actually. how did i get into pinocchio? it doesn't matter, right? what matters is that i have a spot in! i'm a member of pinocchio! beams. and glares slightly at interviewer. it might be because of my 5 years worth of training, me being jjong oppa's little sister or my looks, but i'm not really sure. . . honestly, why are you asking this? you're asking the wrong person, did you mean to find kim youngmin sunbaenim?
question. what is your dream?
answer: what is my dream? i don't know. . what's your dream? uhm. well - being able to debut has been one of my biggest dreams up till now so now that it's accomplished i'm not really sure anymore, i guess. i suppose if you asked me one thing i'd like to be able to do before i die is to either appear in the guiness book of records, maybe be in a kdrama as the lead actress, actually have more than three lines in a song ( oh oops that's still being a singer ) or something like that. i just want to leave a mark on people. so that when the name 'kim sehyun' is uttered people actually recognize it and go 'oh! her! i really like her, she's sooooooooo pretty.'
question. do you have problems with the people in the company? the ceo, trainers – if so, explain why.
answer: widens eyes, before fiddling with fingers and looking left and right. i suppose i don't really have a problem with them, it's more of them having a problem with me, i don't know. the vocal coaches look down on me, the dance trainers have no hope in me. . . . the rap teacher knows that i can't even mutter a single sentence fast without getting my tongue into a knot, so. i'm not really sure what the ceo thinks of me, but well, i'd like to take this opportunity to thank him for letting me debut again. all hail kim youngmin. even though i like lee sooman more. oops.
