Depends on your inspiration. You can actually combine the two~ an one-shot idea that could be expanded into a chaptered story if the reception of the one-shot is good. That's what I'm trying to do with one of my one-shot story now but for the exact opposite reason as you ^^" (my fandom is not as popular, so I'm just testing the water with the one-shot for now).
