background » Mika was born to Mirae and Tadashi, young adults and even younger artists, on July 3, 1992. Together, the family lived in Naoshima where Tadashi supported them through his carpentry. They lived comfortably, and Mika grew up surrounded by love and support from both her parents. She was an average stdudent, an artist (watercolor medium), and a teen hopeful for love. 

 

Mika met Taehyun in the midst of her high school career when his family moved to their little town from Seoul, Korea. At that time, she had her fair of failed and fleeting relationships. She desperately wanted Taehyun to be "the one" for her as he was handsome and seemingly mysterious. He did not speak Japanese, so Mika took it upon herself to learn Korean (her parents hired a tutor) so that she could interact with him (and have him for herself). Through broken Korean and little Japanese, they became close friends. 

 

Despite his reluctance, Mika later learns about Taehyun's family situation. His father is careless with his infidelities while his mother holds on to the little love her husband has for her. She gave up her life in Korea to be with her husband, but their marriage is doomed to fail. Taehyun has encouraged his mother to leave his father, but they both know they cannot support themselves.

 

When his mother begins to work, Mika takes it upon herself to "care" for Taehyun and frequently visits him at his house. She cooks, cleans, and nurses him to health despite his objections. Taehyun finds her sweet and though it is a process, he finds himself opening up to her and depending on her. It is when his mother leaves him for Korea that Taehyun breaks. He cries for the first time in front of Mika. Taehyun asks her to never leave him and she promises to be with him forever. 

 

They enter university together as a couple. The two rarely fight, but it is because Mika always gives in to Taehyun's demands. It is around this time that Taehyun becomes more serious about his music. He tells Mika about his plans to go to Korea in order to become an idol and she is saddened at the thought that he might leave her. So, when Taehyun encourages her to come with him, Mika does not hesitate to tell him "yes!" She finishes her certification to become a teacher in Korea within three years. Her parents are worried about her hasty decision, but they trust Taehyun and their daughter. She is hired by a company in Korea to teach Japanese and English at a public school. After a few months, Taehyun and Mika move to Korea and find housing in a shabby one bedroom apartment. 

 

During their fourth years as a couple, Mika works her main job as a teacher and at night, she works as a dishwasher / hostess at a restaurant near their apartment. Meanwhile, Taehyun has yet to pass auditions at any of the big companies in Seoul. He spends his time practicing and playing for minimal shows in cafes. The two struggle to live, but Mika is simply happy to be with Taehyun. She thinks their situation is similar to her parents. It is around this time that it becomes apparent Mika wants to get married and have a family. Taehyun, annoyed that she would think so selfishly, rejects the idea outright. Mika tries to pacify him, but his pent up frustrations reveal themselves. He hurts her deeply and Mika realizes how much of a burden she has become to Taehyun. She apologizes and tries to pacify him. The damage is done, however. The next day, Taehyun has packed up his things and moved out. 

 

Mika is devastated. She calls him and searches for him, but to no avail. She cannot call her parents as they might worry about her. Her coworker, Hana, offers her a place in her apartment alongside her roommate, Kiko. After a few weeks of not hearing from Taehyun, Mika moves in with Hana and Kiko. She spends the majority of this time recovering from her heart break, but still retains hope that Taehyun will come back. After a year of mourning her loss, Hana signs her up for "The Matchmaker" in hopes that she will forget Taehyun and find someone who truly loves her. 

 

Mika buried her feelings for Taehyun, thus a lot of her feelings are unresolved. When she is reminded of him, she tends to become despondent. Mika cries, whines to Kiko and Hana, and craves a lot of sweets during this time. It was a struggle to tell her parents that she and Taehyun broke up. She did not tell them about their financial difficulties, however she did admit to her mom that she thinks Taehyun left because she started to become demanding. She did, after all, want to move on with her life (get married + have kids) when he wasn't ready.

 

current lifestyle » Mika is a certified English and Japanese teacher for fifth and sixth graders at a public school.  She works 22 hours a week and sometimes teaches after school classes for extra money. Her contract with the school did not include an apartment, but it does allow her an allowance for food and transportation. Her income is below-average by Korean standards, however it is enough for her. When she lived with Taehyun, their expenses were high as he did not work and auditions were incredibly expensive. With Kiko and Hana, their expenses are divided evenly and their apartment is affordable. Mika enjoys thrift shopping, couponing, and occassionally splurges on shoes and her hobbies. She quit her job as a hostess after moving in with Kiko and Hana as the extra income was no longer necessary. Though he does not show it often, a lot of his insecurities arise from his job and lack of sucess. Similar to many others, he grew up with the notion that the man supports the woman. How can he do that as a bartender and a struggling musician? Chanyeol buries his insecurities and laughs them off, however it shows in his lyrics. Chanyeol doesn't think before he speaks, thus he often says things impulsively. The humor in his voice lets him get away with certain comments, however he must be careful. There are times when his comments have unintentionally hurt someone. During those times, Chanyeol is quick to apologise and will often pester his victim until he is forgiven. 

 

In addition, the nature of his work causes Chanyeol to be surrounded by people constantly. He flatters his customers, makes them laugh, and socializes with them. This can be misconstrued as "flirting" behavior, however, and he must be wary of this when he has a girlfriend.

first meeting » Prior to the matchmaker, Chanyeol and Mika met during one of his auditions. She was with Taehyun at that time to support him. The audition took hours and Taehyun was meeting with the directors for a while. Chanyeol noticed that she had been waiting for her boyfriend for hours and offered her some water and snacks. She thanked him, somewhat embarrassed as he probably heard her growling stomach. 

 

For their first official meeting, Chanyeol was tasked to come up with a "first date" idea. He decides to take his "date" to Bukhansan National Park to hike. Along the way, Chanyeol would like to play twnety questions or something of the sort so that they could get to know each other. At the end of the hike, he plans to surprise her with a picnic. 

 

It was awkward at first. Upon recognizing her, Chanyeol makes the mistake of asking "Don't you have a boyfriend?" Mika, embarrassed and somewhat shocked, remains silent. She remembers that they've met before and initially dislikes that she is paired with a musician. She's finally moving on from Taehyun and they pair her up with someone exactly like him.  Both of them think that their matchmaker was wrong in their decision. 

 

The date is a disaster. Mika, who hates cardio, struggled to follow Chanyeol along the trail. The summer heat and the endless number of bugs buzzing about all contributed to her foul mood. She answered curtly to Chanyeol's questions, but she cannot help but make superficial comparisons between Chanyeol and Taehyun. Her mood worsens even more at the thought. 

 

Chanyeol, unfortunately, jumps to the conclusion that Mika is in Matchmaker for a "rebound" boyfriend. Only a year has past, surely they just broke up recently. Who wouldn't think that? Chanyeol applied for the program so that his music would be more popular, but a part of him was also excited to have a "girlfriend." He was honestly disappointed that his match was less than enthused and disinterested in him (as evidenced by her curt replies, dissatisfaction with the date, etc).

Their initial disagreement foreshadows their first month together. Chanyeol purposely annoys Mika by leaving his dishes in the sink, his slippers strewn about in the room, and his Rikkakuma dolls on the couch. He plays his music loudly and bangs around during the night as he returns home. It is his way of revenge because he thinks she is in the matchmaker program for a "rebound" boyfriend. 

 

After complaining to Hana, Mika is reminded that she should not judge Chanyeol so easily. Thus, even though his antics annoyed her greatly, Mika attempts to get to know Chanyeol. She struggles though because he is gone throughout the night and is asleep in the morning. He spends the rest of his time either making a mess or cooped up in his room with his guitar. Though she tries her best, Mika cannot help but think that she is matched with a "Taehyun." Chanyeol's mess, music, and his lack of presence are reminiscent of her relationship with Taehyun. 

 

She complains to Kiko, and Kiko reminds her of their first meeting. Though Mika was put off by Kiko's brutal honesty and cynical nature at first, it did not deter her from attempting to be Kiko's friend. Before hanging up, Kiko tells Mika, "I'm sure you'll find a way to make things work. It's you, after all. Don't give up." 

 

After talking to her, Mika feels reaffirmed and plans to make things work with Chanyeol. 

 

By the second month, the stress of his work hours, failed auditions, and less than nutritious meals take a toll on Chanyeol. He gets the Flu and is incapacitated for days. Mika feels sorry for him, so she makes him soup and helps him with his medications until he recovers. She leaves messages such as "i'm only doing this so i don't get the flu" or "don't get the wrong idea! >:( " with his soup and medications. Chanyeol finds them funny. When he gets better, he thanks Mika by making her dinner. He leaves with a post-it of his own: "you're not so bad after all." Mika starts to realize that maybe Chanyeol is different. 

 

By the third month, the two are somewhat friends. They still annoy each other because Mika nags and Chanyeol is messy. They now go grocery shopping together and have assigned days for when who does which chores. Chanyeol constantly teases Mika for watching her K-dramas obsessively, but she she no longer finds offense. Chanyeol also starts to share his songs with her and he often composes silly pieces about her and how naggy she is. As they get to know each other, Mika now recognizes that Chanyeol is a different person from her ex-boyfriend. 

 

By the fourth month, the two are truly friends. Mika still refuses to accompany him during auditons due to "you-know-who," but Chanyeol makes it a habit to bring her home some sweets even though he doesn't make much money. They eat dinner together, watch dramas, and talk throughout the night. One night, they see Taehyun in a commercial alongside his new idol group. Mika becomes despondent that he has long moved on and Chanyeol, jealous, callously comments that she's stupid for still loving him. It is around this time that Chanyeol realizes he likes her. 

 

Around the fifth month, Chanyeol tries to maintain normalcy around their apartment. He wants to be honest about his feelings, but he feels that he will be rejected. He focuses on his music and the content of his writing revolves around his feelings for Mika. Chanyeol becomes more popular as his music improves, which garners the attention of his female fans. Mika, initially unaffected, is insulted when a comment that she is stringing Chanyeol along reaches her ears. She approaches him about the rumors and Chanyeol ends up confessing to her. Mika tells him that she is still unsure of her feelings and things become awkward in their apartment. She is scared to get hurt again and is confused about her own feelings for Chanyeol. 

 

By the sixth month, the two miss the way they used to tease each other and talk comfortably. They mend their friendship and promise to move on. Mika, oblivious to her own feelings, hates the idea of Chanyeol moving on. She becomes jealous as he attracts more attention. She is saddened for a few days, so Chanyeol decides to cheer her up by surprising her in her classroom. Her students enjoy Chanyeol and Mika realizes that she has loved Chanyeol all along. She confesses to him and they become boyfriend and girlfriend. 

 

The show ends and Chanyeol is more popular than ever. He accepts an offer to join a company and is ecstatic at his successful future. Mika, faced once again with loving a boy who wants to pursue his dreams, refuses to make the same mistake. She encourages Chanyeol to pursue his dreams even if it means he cannot be with her.

interactions » As friends, Chanyeol and Mika share a flirtatious, teasing, and innocent relationship. He always seems to about her height (he will offer her  milk so she can "grow" or he will point to gnomes and say "look, it's you!"). He also has a tendency to "touch" her, however it is innocent. Chanyeol will brush things from her hair, pull her cheeks when she's frowning, wrap an arm around her when they take pictures, or give her piggy back rides when she can no longer walk on her heels. He also serenades her a lot; sometimes, it is out of a joke. There are certain times where Chanyeol expresses his feelings for Mika sincerely through song. 

 

In addition, Chanyeol takes care of her. He always asks that she update him when she gets home from work, he makes the time to bring home food if he can, and makes sure that she is happy (and not dwelling on "you-know-who"). Though he is tired from work, he also offers to help with chores. 

 

As a couple, Chanyeol does similar things. He is, however, more open about his feelings. "Cute," "pretty," and "beautiful" seemingly escape his lips constantly to describe Mika. Simple things, such as grocery shopping, walking to the cafe, or ordering fast food, give him joy because he is doing it with her. He sends her text messages to update her about his day. Chanyeol is also not shy about holding her hand, kissing her, or saying that he loves her in public. 

 

Mika is touched that Chanyeol takes care of her; it is a first since she is usually the one caring for her boyfriend. She also loves that he shows his love unabashedly and does not play games with her. Chanyeol is selfish with her; he wants her love all to himself, but gradually realizes that it will take time for her wounds to heal. He becomes a more patient and thoughtful person when he is with her. 

 

For Mika, she relishes in Chanyeol's love for her. She spoils him with affection and through her actions, reassures him that she loves him and only him. His acceptance of her personality, both good and bad, allows Mika to develop her confidence and to love not only him, but herself as well. Chanyeol's perserverance and his own pursuit of his dreams inspires Mika to follow her own path. As friends, Mika cares for Chanyeol by making him boxed dinners, waiting for him to get home (though she tends to dose off on the couch), supports him when he auditions (albeit she stays in the house), leaves post-its around the house to encourage or , and she takes a lot of photoraphs of Chanyeol. She often argues that he's cute much to his embarrassment. She is not as touchy feely as Chanyeol, though her stomach flutters whenever he gets really close to her.

HOW would you describe your ideal love and relationship?

» Oh, I don't know. Something like Carrie and Mr. Big, maybe? The kind of love where you go through a lot of ups and downs, but ultimately fate brings you together because you were meant to be!. Um, um...the kind of relationship, I want. I ... I'm not asking for much. I just want a relationship where I know I'm loved. 

 

How did you react to getting the matchmaker's white envelope? HOw did your family react?

» I didn't know I was even a participant! I thought the idea was a little silly at first (laughs)! No offense! I'm sorry, was that inappropriate? After a little while, I got excited. I live for this kind of stuff, you know? I watch these shows all the time, so it's kind of surreal that it's my turn to be in one. I haven't told my family yet! My ma will be excited though. She likes this stuff, too! 

 

what was your first impression of your match? Has that changed?

» He's got big ears! And he is so tall! I barely reach his shoulders! How are we supposed to kiss? (laughs) I'm kidding, I'm kidding. He was also kind of chatty and he has this loud voice, you know. At least the house won't be quiet when he's around. 

 

some may be skeptical of the matchmaker's ability to find the perfect match. do you believe in true love?   

» Ahhh, of course I do! My parents for example. They've been in love for years and I don't think their love waned at all. 

 

Since the matchmaking process tends to be very public, you and our match will become quite well known around the country. how do you fell about your private life becoming the topic of interest among the media?

» Honestly, I feel a little uncomfortable. I hope this won't affect my job too much. I don't want the kids' parents to think I'm some sort of ... oh, you know!
