The Little Mermaid

Description

She walked with her eyes, spoke with her hands, and heard with her heart. Just like in a fairytale, she was trapped in a tower, and cursed with the inability to walk, to speak, and to hear. But unlike the fairytales she used to love, the spell that was cast upon her can not be reversed, not even by true love’s kiss.

Fairytale # 1: Kim Minseok

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen

 Prologue:

"Kim Minseok…“ A brown haired man with a young face sitting in a leather chair, straightened his back at the sound of his name. His eyes were wide both in nervousness and anticipation.

In front of him was a middle aged man, musing under his breath as he carefully scanned the context of the papers in his hand. A small wooden plate stood proud on the desk, where ’Mr. Moon Youngsoo, Director’ was engraved in graceful cursive.

With the younger man’s rounded eyes, and the older man’s strict ones, the scene resembled more like a child waiting to be scolded by the principal, rather than a fully grown man trying to apply for a job.

"Age: 25… Desired position: Personal Caregiver… A Registered Nurse…” The older man’s eyebrows raised slightly in confusion. He dropped his hands on the wooden desk in front of him, blinking a few times. “Took internship at a well-known hospital. Previously hired at one of the country’s top hospital.”

“You’re already experienced in the field, I see.” He said as he eyed the young man intently.

"Yes, sir.“ Minseok replied with as much conviction as he could muster.

"Any reason why you’re now applying in a small nursing home such as this?” The older man was genuinely confused behind the logic of the young nurse in front of him.

The younger man faltered for a moment, as though he had been caught off guard, only to recover just as quick. He took a deep breath and swallowed hard, trying to feign confidence. His neck suddenly felt like it was being strangled so he lifted a hand to subtly adjust the tie against his neck.

"I have come to realize that the Hospital was a bit too much for me.“ He made it a point to hold an eye contact.

“Too hectic?“

Was it really the reason? He briefly recalled the sleepless nights he spent in the emergency room, the night shifts he used to take, and… and-

He mentally shook his head

"I suppose you could say that.” Mr. Moon seemed to have accepted his answer, and proceeded to ask more questions in relation to his desired position in his private care center. It took them a full one hour before the interview ended.

"Will you be able to start on Monday?“ The director finally asked after a thorough interview session. He smiled at the young man, pleased with the prospect of hiring such a capable personnel into his center.

 "Yes, sir.” He smiled back.

“It’s official, then.“ The older man extended a hand, and firmly shook the younger boy’s.

"Welcome to the Ocean Homes.”
