Of Prayers and Fairy Lights
Himchan wakes up with a start. He vaguely remembers saying goodbye to Yejin and falling on the bed beside his daughter. But the little girl is gone from the room.
Himchan notices that he was already running late for the meeting.
“Yojeongie!” he calls, entering his bathroom, running the water to wash his face. “Yojeong ah!”
Himchan hears running footsteps and quickly pats his face dry.
“Appa!” just in time, Yojeong runs inside the room, a toast on hand. “Hungry? We’re late, hurry!”
She has already changed out of last night’s clothes, her hair tied into a not-so-neat pony. A bag crosses over her shoulders; white socks cover her tiny feet, the name Yojeong embroidered at the hem.
“Yongguk samchun is outside; he said you need to hurry.”
Himchan grabs the toast with his mouth and grabs the coat with his free hands. Never mind changing, he’ll probably do it later.
“Did Yongguk samchun break in again?”
“I let him in,” Yojeong confesses. “I thought it was only Ahjumma at the door, but he was there too. Anyway, hurry!”
The days are easier. Time passes by quickly, as if the daylight was not enough to complete their schedules. It becomes difficult at night when Himchan has to take Yojeong to bed. She reminds him so much of his late wife. The way her eyes would twinkle, or the way she would wrinkle her nose – these are all reminders that Jaein has given birth to this lovely ch
