His Attempt

My Husband

"I know I shouldn't have brought you any presents because I know you already get what you want."

So, he’s the rich guy who can get anything he wants? You averted your gaze to the said man, pink brush painted on Young Jae’s chubby cheeks surprised you. Young Jae is blushing?

Without your concern, the blood rushed to your cheeks made its colour into rosy pink. Spontaneously, you stared at the floor hiding your embarrassment. Why is he blushing? And what am I embarrassing about?

“Aish, hyung. Jinjja?” The tall man chuckled and cleared his throat to get your attention. “My name’s Choi Jun Hong, I’m Young Jae hyung’s personal secretary. Nice to meet you.” He bowed, you returned the gesture and told your name before saying you glad to meet him. The awkward silence changed when a man with small eyes and shorter than Jun Hong tugged on Young Jae’s hand.

“Come on, hyung. You haven’t given the first slice yet.” In that way Young Jae was separated from you, you and Jun Hong joined the crowd in the middle of the room when everyone started singing the birthday song. Automatically you stood beside the birthday man, showing that you’re his wife. For publicity.

The song ended and Young Jae sliced the cake, gave it to you shyly then the crowd going crazy shouting “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” When you received the sweet dish in your hand, you catched his face came closer swiftly to the other side of your face where the guest couldn’t see. “I’m sorry,” he whispered into your ear and pecked your cheek earning louder shouting in the room.

Then he retreated slowly catching your confused eyes captivated him, both of you absorbed in each other eyes. Suddenly strong arms pulled Young Jae and brought his face to the round cake, leaving you gasped. What a wasted, you thought. As you grabbed a spoon nearby to taste the dish, your younger sister pulled you to the little stage at the front and gave you a bouquet of flower. It was your time throw it.

She proud to be able to catch it after you used all of your strength. You hoped she wouldn’t experience an arranged marriage just because she catched it. Then your eomma dragged you to changed your dress. When you finished changing, like your Eomma knew the right timing she barged in. “You know, Princess, Young Jae is really a nice man,” you could see her glittering eyes. “How he saw you from the distance, I think he—”

“Eomma, I don’t know him besides his job and family members. I couldn’t jump into conclusion he’s a good man. I just know today is his birthday!” You snapped to burst the bottled up feeling and regreted it when you looked at your eomma’s eyes.

“Mianhaeyo, Princess, mianhaeyo. I hope you give him a chance, we trust him.” Eomma’s pleading eyes left you defeated. “Please trust him.”

“I know you need time to get to know him, we understand it. And we believe Young Jae will give you the needed time.” And with that you exited the room and met your Appa still in his suit.

Your Appa hugged you like what father would. He gave you reasuring smile and messied your hair a little, “I’m proud of you, my baby girl is married now.” You didn’t give any answer, giving expresionless eyes.

“Look, you could hate Appa for what Appa did. But please trust me, this is what I can do for you. Saranghaeyo, aegi-yah.” You just nodded in his warm hug again. He left you after giving you the charming smile of his and walked to the room to where your Eomma was.

“Thank you, Eonnie, for everything.” She appeared before you hugging you tightly. She was the innocent one unlike your parents, she didn’t know anything. “No, I should be the one who is grateful. Thank you, dongsaengie.” You hugged her back as tightly as her hug.

She thought you have dated Young Jae secretly and decided to tie the knot with him. She supported you no matter what if she knew this situation, she would be on your side to turn down this arranged marriage. But if this marriage didn’t exist, you already knew the consequence.

When you and Young Jae were near the exit, he said his goodbye and yours as well to all attended guest. After hearing heartfelt words and confession from your younger sister then you realized your Appa and Eomma didn’t want this happened as much as you did.

“Appa and eomma really regret this,Eonnie.” You gave her questioned looked. “They don’t have any power and other options to not setting you up with him,” she tilted her head towards Young Jae still in white cream mess across the room. “Eomma really wanted your boyfriend to be introduced to her and Appa really wanted to scold your boyfriend if he brought you home late,” she let a little chuckle.

“And I really wanted to hear your story about how sweet or cheesy your boyfriend was. If he really existed, Eonnie.” She looked at you sincerely. “And we really wanted to hear directly from your boyfriend when he asked our blessing to marry you,” her eyes filled with tears.

You hugged her tightly giving a message that you would be okay, she would be okay, and your parents would be okay. “Mianhae Eonnie, jeongmal mianhaeyo,” she sobbed silently and without you knowing Young Jae catched this scene. Worried written on his face.

You couldn’t help to not slipping the tears fell to her black braided hair, “Saranghaeyo, Eonnie.”

“Nado saranghaeyo, Ha Neul-ah.”

You waved to the crowd and gave your best smile to your family, Young Jae was envy because he couldn’t get your sweet smile. Not yet, he thought. Your heart was lighter now since your sister knew the truth. You didn’t want to keep any secret from her.

Then you started your journey to your honeymoon destination with Youngjae in the wheel. In the car both of you drowned in your mind, the engine car sound enveloped the silence. When Young Jae decided to break it, he said, “I’m sorry to kissed your forehead and pecked your cheek without asking first.”

“Also—” Not finishing his sentence you cut him off.

“Thank you for making this wedding a success and I’m sorry my family burdened you,” you stated coldly. Young Jae couldn’t find the next words because he knew when he said your family wasn’t a burden and marrying you wasn’t a mistake, you would freak out.

Since two years ago, you have been able to make him fell for you. One day, he was assigned by his dad to spying Marketing Division office in Jong No District. His dad suspected the marketing strategy information was leaked by someone in the division lead by your father. At that time your father and yourself teamed up to catched the culprit but didn’t have enough evidence to bring him to the court.

Young Jae appeared disguising himself as a courier in order to compile the mystery puzzle as soon as possible. Because he didn’t want to see at the bag under your eyes showing how many sleepless night passed. Even your panda eyes could trap him in beautiful reverie.

Young Jae caught himself drowned at the flashback and realized you haven’t given an answer to your apologize. “You’re welcome and no, your family isn’t a burden at all.”

“Why?”

“Why?” Young Jae asked back.

“Yeah, you agree on this arranged marriage and say my family is not a burden. What’s your reason?”

He didn’t want to confess his feeling like this right now. When he was confused, Young Jae bitting his nails. And that was what he did right now, bitting his nails of not dominant hand. “It’s because...”

Long story short, his father wanted him to continue the business. Your father also wanted you to replace him but since you’re a woman and you weren’t experienced enough he made you married Young Jae instead. But that didn’t mean your dad was a second strongest man, Young Jae said all of the remaining founders had the same shares after Mr. Lee left. So whether you married Young Jae or not, all founders had an equal power.

You remembered when your dad asked your signature, said he needed it to legitimate that you were one of the responsible person for the upcoming event. Apparently, your dad used your signature to replace him as one of the founder. Then he proceeded to make you marry Young Jae. In conclusion, it was business matter since the start.

Headache, confusion, and heartache were the exact things described you now. You felt headache because all information you have heard wasn’t easy to digest. Confusion all over you why did Young Jae still married you in the first place because after long explanation, it didn’t explain what was his motive. And heartcache because this marriage had business matter in it.

Young Jae stole side glances at you, “Your father loves you,” he hoped those words helped you. But not, those words were the last thing you wanted hear from him. “But still, you don’t give me your answer. Do you do it on purpose?” The last sentence sounded sharp in his ears.

“I explain you what happened exactly.”

“No, you don’t.” You were tired and sleep was what you needed. You didn’t want to start your first fight on the first day as a wife. Slowly you drifted to slumber.

If I told you I love you, would you believe me? Young Jae said in his mind.

Both of you arrived at the ski resort, the two hours journey felt like a day. As much as you didn’t want to think about what happened earlier, you still were stubborn. Choosing to ask him later if he really was that stubborn. “Do you want to grab something?” Young Jae asked you. Shaking your head was only his answer.

Then grabed your hotel key was only your option so you walked to the receptionist while Young Jae took your suitcases from the luggage. After getting the key, Young Jae asked you, “Could you please keep our room key and my key?” You eyed the things he mentioned.

“I easily forget where I keep my keys so it will be safe if these in your hands,” he smiled sheepishly. You took the things from his hand without words. People won’t think both of you were newlywed couple, not that you really thinking about it.

The room was really spacious with king size bed in the middle, jacuzzi was also available in the large bathroom. After arranging your things and neglect Young Jae’s suitcase near the door, you chose to continue your nap. Didn’t mind if you didn’t have lunch, no appetite was your excuse.

Hours passed and night sky greeted you, just how long did you sleep and forgeting Young Jae outside? When you opened the door the same smile you most saw since morning greeted you. “Annyeong.” Not forgeting to show his bright teeth.

You didn’t answer and just stepped aside to give him a room to enter the suit. “Why didn’t you call me instead of waiting outside?”

“I figure that you might want to continue your nap so I just took a stroll,” he answered lightly. “You want these?” He brought up the plastic bag. “No, thank you.”

“By the way in one hour our dinner is served, you want to use bathroom first?” You nodded and brought anything you needed to the bathroom. When you closed the door Young Jae let out a heavy sigh. “Aish, what should I do?” He messied his black hair.

After changing into cozy outfit you went to the first floor with Young Jae guided you to the dinner table. The dishes looked delicious and yummy, you spent the dinner time without saying anything to Young Jae. He didn’t talk neither, maybe he really savored the taste or drowned in his mind.

Without anything wasted both of you returned to the suit. You didn’t know what to do because it was too early to sleep and you were full enough. Suddenly Young Jae called you, “Want to look at the night sky?” He took you at the highest floor and the breathtaking scenery greeted you.

The twinkle stars at the sky illuminating the park below, Young Jae explained the facilities that were available. “That’s the restaurant where we will have our breakfast tomorrow and that the shops where you can buy souvenirs.” Young Jae pointed there and there.

                “And we will have hanwoo—”

Your mind went somewhere else, Young Jae did all of this whole heartedly. Since your first meeting up until now, you didn’t find him pretending, lying, or faking his smile. Except not telling you behind all of his actions. Young Jae caught you didn’t hear him and waved in front of your face.

“I’ve explained everything clearly but you didn’t pay attention at me at all?” He asked you playfuly.

“I’m sorry, I think about something else.” You responded him seriously. “Let’s return to our room.”

You turned your back at him and felt the bed shifted beside you. After saying his goodnight the silence came over. You didn’t sleepy because a long nap took your exhaustion away. After a couple of hours passed you broke the silence, “Yoo Young Jae-ssi,” then silence return.

“You’re really confusing me. My family trust you and actually I want to trust you but you don’t give me a clear answer, why do you agree in this marriage? What do you get by marrying me?” You took a deep breath. "Jun Hong-ssi said you get anything you want," you yawned. “There’s no advantage for you. You must shut off your own business, marrying a total stranger like me, and did all of the things like what husband do.”

Your last sentence caught your guard off, a husband of you. “But, thank you. Thank you for everything and I’m so sorry for giving you a cold shoulder. I will...” You swallowed your own saliva, realizing you would say vacuous promise. “By the way, saengil chukkae, Yoo Young Jae-ssi.” Slowly drowsiness took over you. “I hope you’ll be a successful businessman, I hope for your happiness, and...”

Your steady breathing filled the room indicated you welcomed the dreamland, Young Jae opened his eyes and slowly turned around meeting your body was motionless. He couldn’t help but smiling, you opened up to him. Carefully he pulled the blanket over your shoulders. “I will wait for the right time to confess to you, just wait okay?” He whispered. His heart beating could be heard in his ears.

“Up until then I will show you how much I love you.” He giggled and turned his back. As if you heard him, you smiled  at your sleep.

This is so beautiful, hope you will make another amazing story like this again, authornim :D
and I agreed with what you just said, I think it's not love either, because if it's really love it would never make someone suffering in this life, and there's someone I know doing the something and she's sick then died because something like that, and people still call it love, I don't know what to say anymore, this world is really scary nowadays ;_;
