Maxime High 「 TEASER 01 」
Maxime High 「 REMORA 」TEASER 01
Burn Baby Burn
The grounds of Maxime High were quiet. Almost too quiet. The sun was rising and gentle light filtered through the leaves of the trees, some of which had decades of years racked up in their sturdy frames. The rays were just starting to dance across the calm surface of the lake right at the far end of the grounds as day broke. Dew beads balancing on the tips of grass blades ran across the slick leather of a pair of shoes as a strong figure walked over the estate with an air of determination. The whole school was sleeping soundly that morning, having celebrated the summer solstice the night before until the early hours of the morning - a school tradition.
He stopped. His perfectly shined shoes no longer comforted by the plush, well-kept lawn but instead on the burnt, decaying rubble of what once was an age old building and part of the school. Fortunately it had been a building that was rarely in use - due for renovations over the summer months whilst students were back at home and away from the grounds. Almost too coincidental that the same building was now nothing but burnt wood, broken bricks and a pile of ash that still smouldered and smoked as the very last of it burnt away.
Reaching into the pocket of his pressed, grey trousers, Principal Cha Seungwon pulled out his phone and dialled three on speed dial. As the tone rang monotonously in his ear he let out a deep breath and glanced around him.
“Secretary,” He greeted her good morning, though she didn’t seem all too enthusiastic about such an early call. “I need you to do me a favour.” He smiled to himself.
Barely an hour later after taking an extended stroll around almost the entire school grounds, just in case any other vandalism had taken place in the night, Principal Cha arrived back at his office and sunk into the deep red leather of his chair. He cleared his throat, adjusted his tie and leaned forward just enough to press the intercom on his phone.
“Secretary Kim,” He called out, eerily cheerful even for him on a good day, let alone a day where he discovered part of the school had burned down. Moments later, an older lady bustled herself into the office, arms full of files and a hard drive dangling on a cord that she clung to with just a finger.
“It’s all here, just like you asked for.” She insisted, voice reaching a pitch a little higher than usual out of stress and confusion. The school’s Principal had odd requests and a strange demeanour sometimes but today she was slightly concerned. “The files,” She tried to gracefully place them in front of him but they kind of just cascaded over the desk, a couple slipping to the floor.
“And the CCTV footage?” He asked, taking a pair of reading glasses out of the top drawer.
“Here,” She presented him with the hard drive, “But Sir, if you’re looking for the culprits who burned down the building, there are no-“
“No angles on that area of the grounds, I know, Secretary, thank you, you may go.” He smiled, ushering her hands away from the drive that he was already plugging into his computer.
“But you can’t possibly-“
“Thank you Secretary.” He repeated, staring up at her with a promise of a smile until she backed out of the room, shutting the door after her. Once she departed, he sighed and looked out across the files in front of him. He pushed them to the side, waved the mouse around the screen impatiently, clicking a few too many times until the drive finally showed up. Though he knew he couldn’t hope to see who started the fire, Seungwon suspected that he could pin point just who might have something to do with it just by watching the cameras, and seeing who went where that evening. It was going to be a long morning, but he wasn’t fazed, in fact, it almost excited him. Always one for a challenge, Seungwon sat back in his chair to watch the footage, not before calling Secretary Kim back momentarily to request a coffee.
Seungwon had been at it for hours, or so it seemed, and his two distinct heaps of files were getting more and more defined. Guilty and… Not guilty. Did all thirty of his guilty files have something to do with the fire? Absolutely not, but if you’re going to teach a lesson, Seungwon thought, teach it well.
The gong for lunch had rung long ago and when Secretary Kim was summoned once again, she was surprised to learn it was not to fetch him some food.
“Secretary,” He got up, stretching a little and glancing out the window. He picked up a post it from his desk and handed it to her. “Fetch these files for me.” He told her, more so than asking. “And ring the media. I feel a press conference is in order.” He smirked.
“Sir?” She coughed, barely able to keep her composure. Surely he wasn’t going to fess up to the press just like that- that delinquents and hooligans had been allowed to attend one of the most prestigious schools in the country, burned down a building no less.
“The press, Secretary Kim.” He patted her arm. “Call them.” He repeated, putting on his suit jacket and strolling out of the office. He’d done enough for now. His plan would start to piece itself together soon. But until then, food sounded like a good idea. And maybe a nap.
