With every newborn, a red string is bestowed upon their pinkies holding a bunch of promises of them meeting their soulmates. These infants can barely understand a single word, but through glassy doe eyes they can see the red string, and they gurgle at its sight.
People around the world barely understand the red string’s magical properties, and scientists have long accepted the fact that it’s a problem they’ll never be able to figure out. There will be believers who rejoice at the idea of meeting your soulmate, there will be those who scoff at the red string on their pinky and some wonders why they couldn't choose their other half themselves.
But everyone celebrates it’s existence—they make novels, movies about meeting your soul mate, they constantly throw the idea at your face, and many takes the opportunity to open a soulmate matchmaking companies to make sure that you meet your soulmate.
Numbers are crunched, names are shuffled through, worlds are crossed, and miles are walked, and at the end of that string stands your soulmate. What they were doing with their lives before that, you’ll never know. Any past relationships they had, whether successfully or in vain, you’ll never need to know, because as long as you see that red string on their pinky, you know they’re made for you.
It doesn’t matter if you live happily ever after, or in bitterness; because if you compare the perfectly matched couples to the ones that don’t work out in the end, the numbers are millions apart.
So at the age of five, she sees the red string neatly tied around her pinky and asks her father to tell her the story of how her parents met. While she lies on her bed with her blanket tucked underneath her chin, her parents happily recall their perfect fairytale to her, as the little girl's eyes glisten with happiness. She wants that happy ending, she tells herself.
When he turns ten, he asks his parents at the kitchen counter, “When will I meet my other half?” with curious eyes, fingers toying the bright red string glinting almost surrealistically under the sunlight. His parents give him a small smile, his father picking him up from the stool and cradling him on his hip. Ruffling his hair with a deep chuckle, "Soon,” his father replies.
Time flies, and just like everyone else, the girl and the boy grew up looking for their other halves.

It’s a sunny afternoon when he enters the quaint cafe, the bell chiming as he opens the glass door. It smells of freshly brewed coffee and the right amount of cinnamon. He makes his order at the counter, sliding a bill along the hard wood of it as he smiles at the girl running the cashier. He makes note of the wedding band on her ring finger. Lucky girl, he thinks before walking away.
While he waits for his name to be called, he sees lovers all around him, and wonders how nice it would be to have one. There is an elderly couple beside him, the man chuckling softly, almost fondly as the woman twirls a finger mid-air, right between their pinkies. And he knows that although he can't see it, it's their very own red string the woman is toying with.
He jolts when his name is called, and rushes forward to the counter, completely unaware of the person in front of him, staggering backwards with a quiet ‘oof’ escaping his lips.

It was supposed to be another simple lunch break. Grab some coffee, perhaps a turkey sandwich at her usual deli cafe, it was a simple routine that she always followed and it kept her hectic schedule in order.
What she doesn't expect is for her routine to be broken by someone hurdling into her, causing her to spill americano all over her coat. It’s an uncomfortable feeling, and she curses under her breath as her music sheets scatter all over the floor. She bends down in reflex, eyes quickly going over the sheets and huffing in relief when none of it seem to have been drenched by the coffee.
Too busy focusing on the music sheets on the ground, she doesn't notice another set of hands helping her with the sheets.
That was awfully cliche, he’ll probably think when he looks back at this moment. But that’s for another moment in his life, later in the future. When he moves to collect the last of the sheets, the only thing in his mind is the present, and how his hands brush against hers the way it did in a movie he saw just a few weeks prior.
And the thing is that people have been criticizing the best-selling movie about the red string of fate because it is far too unrealistic, too impossible; but sometimes they forget that movies are there only because there is real life.
He sees the red string tied neatly on her pinky, and she can only freeze, staring at their hands in disbelief. They both look up at the same time and their eyes lock.
You’ve got to be kidding me, they both think incredulously.
