They met each other by pure chance.

It was a Christmas Eve party and Seungyoon had invited almost everyone that he knew. It was one of those parties where people came for the free drinks and to hook up with strangers instead of spending the night before Christmas wallowing in loneliness.

Amidst exchanges of hellos and half-hearted Christmas wishes with people that they barely knew, they found themselves next to each other in the corner of the room, separated from the others by an invisible wall.

Alcohol had a way with them. They started slowly with polite remarks about the guests’ attires then quickly progressing to rapid fire exchanges between the two of them.

Secrets were shared. Agree to disagree on differing opinions – there were no holds barred at all. Like how soda spills out non-stop from a bottle which you had just shook vigorously.

You always know when you’ve met someone special. These kinds of chances don’t come that often. They both knew. And so they grabbed at the chance and took the plunge.

They spent a lot of time together after that and grew closer. Much closer than they should have.

Long fingers, big hands. Slim soft fingers, veiny hands. They intertwined. So different but they fit so well.

Before long, they became each other’s special person.

Weekends spent together – anything from visiting art galleries or just a quick walk in the park. Lazy Sunday mornings where the two of them will just lay together in bed. One’s head on the other’s shoulder. Remnants from yesterday’s passionate night still sticking to their bodies.

It wasn’t long before reality sinks in.

The stigma, the stares, the tongue-in-cheek jokes.

It was too much for Mino. Why is it so hard just to spend time with someone he loves?

If Mino is the careful one, Taehyun is the carefree half in their relationship. Taehyun, always honest to a fault, the yin to Mino’s yang.

The first time Mino broke Taehyun's heart a little was when he started questioning Taehyun if what they were doing was right. He had gone through a rough day in office with his colleagues’ reactions when he had told them about Taehyun. One of his colleagues had caught both of them holding hands in a café.

“Why should we worry about what people think about us? We are just two normal people who met and fell in love with each other. It’s that simple. Now kiss me”

Even the nerves could not stop Mino from smiling at how simple Taehyun had put it. As usual, Taehyun’s honest remarks managed to make Mino feel better. He always managed to put Mino back on the right lane after he had almost detoured off the track.

It wasn’t long before Mino started to question their relationship again.

The second time it happened, Taehyun had stormed out of their apartment in the middle of a heavy rain.

Mino had found it difficult to cope with the judging stares and snide remarks about their relationship. Some of his friends had cut off their contact with him after finding out about them. All these negative reactions had added on to Mino’s mental stress and this had affected their relationship. Mino sometimes had treated Taehyun coldly.Unable to keep silent anymore, he had poured out all the emotions that he had kept bottled up inside of him after Taehyun had questioned him about his cold behaviour during dinner.

“I can’t do this anymore.“

That sentence just came out unexpectedly from Mino’s mouth. The moment he said it, Mino had regretted it. The look on Taehyun’s face crushed him.

Mino cursed at himself for being such a coward and a jerk.

“I need some fresh air,” said Taehyun as he slammed the front door and left the apartment.

Mino rushed out after him, hoping that he had not run off too far in the rain. He knew how Taehyun can get sick so easily.

The second he stepped out of the building, he could see the outline of Taehyun’s back, in front of the main gate. He was standing still like a stone under the rain. Mino slowly approached the man with his umbrella.

“I don’t know where else I can go to. I only have you,” muttered Taehyun as he rested his head on Mino’s chest.

“Why do you have to keep doing this to me?”

Mino was glad for the rain. It washed away the hot tears streaming down his cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” Mino could think of nothing else to answer back.

He pulled Taehyun into a tight embrace, covered him with his jacket and together, they walked back up to their apartment.

That night, they hugged each other to sleep. Although it wasn’t the most comfortable position to sleep in, neither of them wanted to let go of each other. They held on to each other as if their lives depended on it.

They stopped going out in public ever since then.

The third time happened during the week of the Christmas holidays.

Taehyun had told his mom about Mino. Surprisingly, she took the news well and gave her blessings to them. You could say that she might have guessed it quite early on since Taehyun had always talked to his mom about Mino with so much affection.

Mino had intended to do the same too. He wanted to redeem himself after all the missteps that he had committed. They were sleeping over at Mino’s place before taking the flight to Tokyo tomorrow together.

“This is Taehyun. He’s going to Tokyo with me. He’s my ... “

Mino’s tongue tied up as he tried to search for the right word. He had it all planned out. A mental script in his mind.

“Just follow the god damn script!” Mino’s inner voice screamed at himself.

“I’m his best friend. We travel a lot together,” Taehyun continued for him with a smile.

His hand on Mino’s shoulder, giving him a reassuring squeeze.

Not again, Mino. Why do you have to spoil everything? Why do you always have to break Taehyun’s heart?

They slept together later that night in Mino’s room in silence.

They finally spoke to each other after reaching the hotel late at night. Taehyun was being moody during the entire flight to Tokyo. Mino couldn’t blame him. He was disappointed in himself too.

“I’m sick of you literally trying to push me out of this relationship and then when you feel like it, you pull me in again. Stop with your insecurities. I love you.  Like a lot. More than you can ever imagine. But this has got to stop.”

“Let’s play a game of fate. If you still want to be in this relationship with me, try and find me.”

“If you fail, I will say perhaps it is about time we reevaluate our relationship. Are you up for it, Song Mino-sshi?
