Chapter 6

Rain: Lock & Key

When they pulled away from their hug, Key felt a pang in his heart. Jonghyun's eyes were a little red and teary and he couldn't help but feel responsible for those tears. After all, he did leave Jonghyun for three years. While he was away, he always justified it as trying something new or simply taking an opportunity to see the world, but in reality it was just running away.

Key knew he was thinking too much and that he needed to stop, so he forced a smile onto his face.

"I promise I'm going to make it up to you, Jjong. I shouldn't have been away for so long, it wasn't any good for either of us." Jonghyun wearily smiled back and sat down on the bed with a light sigh.

"God, I'm so embarrassed, I shouldn't have said any of that, Bum. I probably made you feel horrible... I just missed you a lot, okay? You know how clingy I am-"

Before he could continue rambling on like Key knew he would, he threw one of the shirts he had been packing at Jonghyun's face.

"Help me pack, Jjong."

"You know, you'll only be staying over for like thee days. Well, that's unless you'd like to move in- which I totally wouldn't mind." as much as he was trying, Jonghyun couldn't seem to fold the shirt neatly.

"You don't have nearly enough closet space." Key could already see the wrinkles forming on his shirt, so he took it from Jonghyun's hands and refolded it himself.

"You can have Sodam's old room as your closet." Jonghyun began to rummage through Key's closet, looking for anything he'd like to see the other wearing.

"I don't think I could deal with you being my roommate." Key just watched Jonghyun intently as he browsed through his clothes and hoped he didn't come across something he shouldn't.

"You should get used to it, you're gonna be stuck with me through college." Jonghyun paused on a large white shirt with a slit down the middle that ended mid chest. As if that wasn't enough, it was translucent. Just imagining Key in a shirt like that made him shiver. Hastily, he returned the hanger to the closet and continued looking trough much safer T-shirts.

"You already decided were gonna be roommates?" Key asked from across the room, standing by his drawers while selecting a pair of jeans.

"Yup, I think I decided when we were at summer camp when we were ten. I can't stand other people, I just like you." Jonghyun managed to send him a goofy smile, one that left a light blush on Key's cheeks, before he went back to rummaging through the younger's closet.

"I'm sure Taemin, Minho, and Jinki would love to hear that."

"You're my best friend, Bum, they'd under-" Jonghyun suddenly went quiet and it took all of Key's self restraint to not push him away from his closet.

"Whoa, why do you keep all of these in here? Are you ashamed of me?" Key froze and quickly- too quickly- he rushed over to Jonghyun.

Key chuckled softly at Jonghyun as he taking out a stack of photo albums from the closet.

Jonghyun sat down on the floor next to Key's bag, not wasting a second in opening the oldest of the five.

"I took them with me, I just haven't found a place for them here. I haven't completely unpacked yet, there's still boxes of stuff sitting in there, I just don't have room for it all."

"You should let me have these then, I haven't looked through these in years! Just look at this! We're covered in bubbles!" Jonghyun was holding up the book and pointing at a picture of toddler versions of them plopped in a bathtub, covered by a copious amount of bubbles and surrounded by floating toys.

Jonghyun practically had stars in his eyes as he flipped through the pages cooing at picture after picture.

"What? Hell no! These are mine, now get your grubby hands off of my pictures!"

"They're technically mine too though! Sit with me, I haven't seen these in ages, I wanna look through them." Jonghyun had such a wide smile on his face, one that made Key realize just how much he truly missed seeing him in person. For so long, all he had to see Jonghyun were Skype calls, the far too infrequent selcas, and the photographs in those albums. None of them did him, or that smile, justice.

Key wasn't moving at all, so Jonghyun reached upwards and tugged him down by his wrist. With a sigh, he settled into the spot next to Jonghyun.

They went album after album, smiling at old pictures, remembering the moments captured.

"God, I've missed snow. Like you have no idea, Jjong. California is nice, but the weather never changes." Key mumbled looking through the most recent album. The pictures were already three years old, most from the summer, fall, and winter before Key had gone to study abroad.

"Bummie, you're exaggerating." Jonghyun nudged Key's knee with his and gave him a sideways glance with a soft smile.

Key was pouting at a picture of them both laying in a mound of fluffy snow in front of the café. Minho had taken the picture from the deck during a morning of sipping hot chocolate and snow ball fights.

"Okay, whatever, I'm exaggerating a little but they have no seasons. It hardly rains and it's always warm and it never snows. I like snow, I missed it." Key flipped the page and he immediately smiled. It was one of his favorite pictures, he had kept a framed copy on his desk in his dorm room. He wondered what box it was packed in, he couldn't quite remember.

The thought and the conversation slipped from his mind as he just continued staring at the picture. A fourteen year old version of himself and a fifteen year old version of Jonghyun stood clutching each others' glove clad hands in a skating rink. They were face to face, toothy smiles and twinkling eyes aimed at each other, as they tried to keep their balance in the crowd of people. He couldn't remember who took that one (it was most likely Minho) but he silently thanked them for it.

"Since when? I'm pretty sure- and don't contradict me on this, I know you better than I know myself- you hate snow. Something about having to wear ugly jackets all winter and having to shovel the driveway- you were always complaining." Jonghyun playfully poked his side and Key slapped his hand away.

"I know," Jonghyun reached out to attack his side with wiggling fingers and Key shot him a glare, "but being away from something for so long makes you realize just how much you really like it."

Jonghyun met his eyes and smiled, the same smile that made Key think that what they had was slightly more than friendship, and hummed.

"I know the feeling." Jonghyun smile turned into a smirk and in a second, he had Key laughing uncontrollably under his fingertips.

Key was being tickled relentlessly and, as contagious and addictive his laughter was, Jonghyun didn't seem to be stoping any time soon.

Key was already on laying on the floor, limbs flailing to push Jonghyun away in between hysterical laughter.

"Admit that you missed me more than anything and I'll let you go!" Jonghyun was loosing the upper hand, but he was having too much fun teasing Key to care.

Key managed to wiggle free of Jonghyun's grasp and crawl away a safe distance before glaring at his best friend.

He was still breathing heavily, panting a little bit, but that didn't keep him from whispering Jonghyun's name in the most menacing way possible.

"Kim Jonghyun," Key shakily stood up and waked over to the bed and picked up one of his overly fluffy pillows, "I am going to kill you."

Jonghyun wasn't quite sure if he should be or scared, but- with Key looking at him like that- it was difficult not to feel both.

Key stomped towards him, still in his work attire. His black skinny jeans weren't unnecessarily tight and his white button down simply hung on him.

Jonghyun was starting to think he wouldn't mind dying at the hands of Kibum.

That was until a pillow hit him in the face.

Repeatedly.

"Don't you freaking dare do that ever again."

With every word came a smack with the pillow. Jonghyun immediately started laughing, simply letting Key go on until it was completely out of his system.

"Are you done, Bum?" Jonghyun couldn't help but ask teasingly when Key plopped down onto the floor next to him for the second time that day.

"No," Key sighed and threw the pillow at Jonghyun with a frown, "but it's too hot to continue."

Absentmindedly, Key popped open the top button of his shirt and ran a hand though his hair to get it out of his face.

"I'm sweaty and gross and I need to change." Key groaned. He rolled over onto his stomach, pressing his cheek to the cool, wooden floor.

"Go take a shower, I'll finish packing for you."

"You won't pack anything stupid?" Key sat up and glanced at Jonghyun skeptically.

"These are your clothes."

"You're right, I'll look fine with anything in there. Just pick like three more shirts." he stood up and got a change of clothes from his closet.

Jonghyun remained on the floor, peering up at Kibum with a somewhat mischievous smile.

Key ruffled Jonghyun's hair on the way out of the room and wondered if it was a good idea to let him pick the remaining shirts he needed.

~*~

Not five minutes later, Jonghyun stood in front of Kibum's closet, French folding doors thrown open.

The first shirt, he picked without hesitation.

He had the translucent white shirt with the slit down the middle folded as best he could and placed in Key's bag, all the while giggling maniacally, almost immediately after he began his search.

The other two were a little more difficult to select, all the choices were a bit overwhelming.

Jonghyun eyed a simple gray tank top and a thin, navy colored plaid shirt unsurely. It wasn't something he thought Key would wear (why was it in his closet?), but Jonghyun couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corners of his lips when he imagined him wearing it.

His third and final choice was the most difficult, and the one he spent the most time pondering. He had another tank top draped over his left shoulder as he looked over a dark green V-neck. He heard the water start running, and he knew he didn't have long before Key came back.

He couldn't make a choice between the two and he wasn't sure he even really liked either of them.

Throwing both the shirts onto the bed, he continued rummaging through Key's closet. Shirt after shirt, he found nothing that particularly held his interest. Most were old shirts, shirts that he wasn't too sure would still fit Key.

Looking through the last few shirts, he saw a flicker of white near the wall. Jonghyun immediately pushed all the hangers aside to get a good look at what he already had a feeling was there.

He smiled fondly at the shirt, happy that Key still had it. It was a large white T-shirt with the design of a clothing tag. Jonghyun had one, too. the only difference was that his was black.

He still remembered pulling Key into a store at the mall just as they were leaving. He didn't really want to buy anything (they had already bought too much) but it was more time that he got to spend with his best friend. Key had told him he was leaving by then and Jonghyun became increasingly clingy, as if he could get three years worth of memories in a couple of months.

Jonghyun smiled thinking back at how he had absentmindedly watched Key as he looked through the racks of clothes in the store. He could never pinpoint when he had fallen for Key (was I always in love with him?), but that was one of the moments that he should have known.

His eyes always seemed to gravitate towards Key no matter the situation: during class, while he was running around the café, whenever they were in he same room. He would watch those bow shaped lips or those sharp eyes as he talked, always wanting to lean closer. The beat of his heart had accelerated in those moments, and Jonghyun chuckled at how oblivious of his feelings he had been.

The fast beat of his heart was a welcome feeling when he thought of Key now, while he completely ignored it back then.

The sound of Key's laugh had resonated through the store and Jonghyun followed it to it's source. Key was holding up a pair if T-shirts, exactly the same in design, opposite in color.

Key handed him the black one and pulled him to the dressing rooms without a single word, only a smile.

They both changed quickly and walked out of their separate rooms to look at themselves in the large mirror at the end of the hall.

They laughed a little at the unusual design, but in the end Jonghyun actually liked them. Now that he thought back he wasn't sure it was the shirts he liked, but how he and Key looked next to each other wearing them.

Just as Key had turned to walk back into his stall, Jonghyun turned and grabbed his wrist.

"Lets get them, Key."

"But they're ugly." Key stared back at him with round eyes and his head tilted slightly to the side in a confused manner.

"But I like them." Jonghyun dropped his hand, dejected.

"Then you get it," he laughed and walked back into his stall to change.

To his surprise, Kibum wasn't there waiting for him when he stepped out of the changing room.

He was at the checkout counter with the white shirt in hand.

Needless to say that after Jonghyun payed for his own shirt, he bought Kibum a ridiculous amount of candy as a thank you.

~*~

Jonghyun hurried to get the shirt off the hanger and into the bag before Key returned. He had no idea how he would react to finding the shirt in his bag, but Jonghyun wanted to find out.

He zipped up the bag and placed it on Key's bed just as he heard the water stop.

He looked around the room for anything to kill time. Key's room was as neat and clean asit ever had been. Jonghyun felt like he had gone back in time to three years ago. The walls were the exact pale blue he remembered helping Key paint, and all his furniture was in the exact same place.

Jonghyun, being the sap that he was, sat at his desk and grabbed a pen. He fumbled around looking for paper, but only found a pad of sticky notes. He decided that that would do. He pealed the note from the pad and stuck it on his desk once he was done. He smoothed down the corners of the sticky note onto the dark wood of the desk and smiled at the words written in his messy handwriting.

thank you for being my key.

~*~

By the time Key got back, Jonghyun was plopped on his bed singing along to a song blaring out of his phone.

"Don't you ever get tired of singing? You're doing it all the time."

"I see you all the time, and I'm still not tired of you." Key grabbed the remaining pillow on his bed and smacked Jonghyun with it for what was probably the hundredth time that day.

"What's with you and pillow violence today?" Jonghyun sat up, slightly annoyed, but all his annoyance disappeared once he saw Key.

Jonghyun had to try very hard not to stare when he saw what Key was wearing. He wore a simple, loose baseball-tee with sky-blue sleeves, but that wasn't what caught his attention.

Shorts.

Fitted denim shorts that ended three quarters down Key's thighs, just above his knees.

Smooth legs with a very light tan caught and held his attention while Key put his bag of toiletries into the larger bag on his bed.

Jonghyun wondered since when he found legs so attractive but he dismissed the thought when he realized that was attracted to anything that was Key.

"You ready to go, Jjong?" Key asked with a small knowing smirk as he picked up his bag and slung the strap over his shoulder.

"Ready!" he jumped off the bed and turned off the music coming from his phone before stuffing it in his pocket.

"Can we stop for some ice-cream? I'm kind of in dire need... Taemin got to my head." Key shyly asked as he finished locking the front door of his house and slipped his keys into his back pocket.

Jonghyun chuckled and, without thinking about it, he grabbed Key's hand and intertwined their fingers.

"Sure, Bum."
