The Plan
Balance MeFinally, he might have found an anniversary plan that Kyuhyun would enjoy!
Ryeowook loved having anniversaries and would have celebrated one every day he and Kyuhyun were together if he it were possible. But it wasn’t always, so he made sure to find every excuse to have a celebration and drag his boyfriend out of the house. Unfortunately, Kyuhyun neither liked making plans nor doing stuff. It was a tricky balance between finding an activity where Ryeowook’s presence actually mattered (unlike playing video games) and didn’t make Kyuhyun uncomfortable (nothing to do with animals). And this one fit the scale exactly!
Okay, was it a little weird that Kyuhyun couldn’t ride a bike? Yes, a little. But so much good could come from it! They could spend the next two days together doing something productive. And after their anniversary they could keep doing it, and maybe they could start exercising together in the mornings, and they could cheer each other on and go places and-
“I’m sorry; what are you talking about?” Kyuhyun interrupted in confusion.
Now perched in his lap with his arms around Kyuhyun’s neck, Ryeowook giggled. His boyfriend looked completely bewildered; cheeks were still red from embarrassment and eyes with the look of lost puppies. It was cute. Slowly, he explained: “For our sixth month anniversary, I am going to teach you how to ride a bike.”
Kyuhyun stared at him, still bemused. “Wait-you’re not…? What?”
“Teach you. Biking. I can teach you how to ride your bike, and then on Friday we’ll be able to bike down to the lake! Isn’t that perfect?”
Kyuhyun just kept staring at him. Ryeowook considered snapping fingers in his face to make sure he hadn’t gone paralyzed when suddenly he blinked.
“Y-You. Teach me. How to bike?”
“Yes.” Ryeowook beamed.
Kyuhyun grimaced. “And you really think you can do it by Friday?”
“Of course!”
It almost started to look like Kyuhyun was freezing up again, but then he nodded. “Okay,” he relented. “Okay. You’re going to teach me how to ride the bike. I am going to bike. Please teach me how to ride a bike, Kim Ryeowook.”
Positively glowing with happiness, Ryeowook kissed him right on the lips. They stayed like this for a moment with Kyuhyun’s thin arms around his back and their noses just barely brushing. Then, Ryeowook pulled back with a bright smile. “Okay, I’m going to go home and get my bike,” he said, “You stay and get ready your stuff ready. Alright?”
“Wait, what? We’re learning now?”
“Of course! We only have a couple days to get you comfortable on a bike and then it’s our anniversary! Now get your stuff together; I’ll be right back!” he said, scrambling off of Kyuhyun’s lap and house.
Ryeowook was giddy with excitement. Running down the sidewalk, he sprinted for his house. Because their houses were so close together, he hadn’t bothered biking over, but now he was paying for it by having to run home. Ryeowook didn’t consider himself out of shape or anything except yeah, he kind of was. The fact that he had so much extra weight to carry did not help at all.
Ryeowook was heaving by the time he made it home. It was good thing this was for Kyuhyun or he might not have made it all the way. Ignoring his mother’s questions, he raced to open the garage door and jumped on his bike.
By the time he got back, Kyuhyun was sitting in the garage, door open. His pink bike sat in the corner, untouched. Ryeowook hopped off his bike and bounced up to him.
“Hey, you ready? I was thinking we could go to the school parking lot since it should be mostly empty right now and… what are you wearing?”
Kyuhyun glanced up. “Padding. It’s a safety precaution,” he said, standing up.
Ryeowook wasn’t sure whether to sigh or laugh. Naturally, precautions was good. But sometimes there were precautions, and then sometimes there was armor. Kyuhyun had on knee pads, elbow pads, gardening gloves, and of course a far too small helmet. He had also taken the liberty to change into jeans and a thick long-sleeved shirt.
Ryeowook settled for a groan. “Um, Kyuhyun, we’re learning how to ride a bicycle…not a motorcycle.”
“Yes. And?”
“Well…it’s just…” he tried not to gesture to the pro-skateboarder/winter mom outfit.
“If you’re trying to tell me I look ridiculous, I would like to remind you that I am sixteen-year-old guy learning how to ride a bike. Nothing looks dumber than that.”
As much as Ryeowook wished to tell him to look in the mirror, he didn’t. Instead, the shorter turned to the bike. His first thought upon seeing it up close: “That is most definitely pink.” His second thought being: “Are the tires pumped?” he asked.
Kyuhyun just blinked at him as if this were a foreign concept. “Yeah. They should be. I mean, I haven’t touched the bike in five years.”
Ryeowook sighed, “Grab me a tire pump would you?”
“So,” he asked, while inflating the bike tires, “Why did you never learn if you’ve always had this bike?”
“I don’t know,” Kyuhyun shrugged from the sidelines. “My parents bought it for my fifth grade graduation, but they never bothered teaching me how to ride it. I guess I was too lazy to ask.”
“Well what about Ahra? Why didn’t she offer?”
“To teach me? I don’t know. Maybe she was too busy?”
“I can believe that.” Which was always code for: “I don’t believe that.”
“Alright,” Ryeowook said, standing over a freshly pumped bicycle, “It’s ready to ride.”
Kyuhyun smiled. “Thanks.”
“Yep. We can walk it down to the elementary school and there we can work on your mounting.”
“Okay, cool.”
Ryeowook skipped back down to his bike and picked it off the ground. Turning around, he realized Kyuhyun hadn’t moved.
“Kyu? Are you alright?” he called.
“Yeah, it’s just-” His boyfriend kicked at the bike. “-I can’t get this stick out of the way.”
Frowning, Ryeowook jogged back up only to realize the “stick” Kyuhyun was talking about was the kickstand. “Here.” Taking the handles from him, Ryeowook swiftly kicked it up and handed it back to Kyu. He noticed the taller didn’t look at him.
Together, they left the house.
