Helter SkelterThere was a world of whom the humans did not know of. A world full of wondrous but cruel creatures. Beautiful, alluring and yet so deadly. Humans did not know of that world but there were many legends and myths, speculations and wishful thinking. Some of those were true, many were not though. Most those those myths were just assumptions and made up stuff and the most of them had been made up by the people of the other world themselves to distract the humans.
Among those creatures there was a ranking system, which they were really aware of. Brownies, ghouls, boggarts and many others were one of the lower ranked creatures. Pixies, leprechauns, nymphs and others were the middle ranked creatures and then there were the high ranked creatures.
Vampires, dragons, demons and witches, those were only few of those high ranked creatures and there was a reason why.
Witches were said to be sneaky and devious; women who knew how to use their magic for their own benefit and not only their magic but also their other tools.
They lived in Covens, which were spread all over the world, and followed the Codex of the Witches, more or less. Even though they lived everywhere, the Covens where centered in America and especially in Europe.
Each Coven had one leader which would decide the verdicts in difficult times.
“You ready?” Ava asked Evia, who only raised her brow. The answer was not obvious. She was not ready to face Loraine. It was not like she was scared of Loraine, unlike some of her other witch sisters; Evia had other reasons.
Every witch had her own room but Loraine had two. One was her private room and one was her working room. It was surprisingly neat and tidy, everything stored into the shelves and there was no sign of dust anywhere.
As usual, Loraine sat on her chair behind the black desk, her eyes focused on the book in front of her.
“What is it?” she asked without looking up.
Round glasses with a thin framing sat on her high nose, making her pretty but mature looking face nearly look cute. Intelligent green eyes looked at Ava and Evia as they stopped right in front of the desk. “We went to check the borders and got attacked.”
Loraine raised her brow and put the book away. “Attacked by whom?”
Ava's face went dark and her hand clenched to fists. “I see. Have you killed them?” The question was a pure routine question, something the most witches were already used to. “No, they fought us but suddenly disappeared and left us with some kind of.... lackeys.”
Slowly, Loraine nodded but her expression still was blank. “Which side did they belong to?”
This time it was Evia who answered Loraine's question. “We don't know. Couldn't ask them before they disappeared because we were too not to destroy the Liebermann-Villa and the area around it.”
Loraine's eyes focused on Evia and the intensity of her gaze could have destroyed walls. Evia stared back, her gaze cool and gentle.
“Thanks for the report. You can leave now, Ava. Evia, you stay here.”
Rather hesitant, Ava stood up, and she left but not before patting her friend's shoulder. The door closed silently, leaving the two witches alone. “Have you made your mind up yet?”
Evia's expression changed from the gentle but blank mask to something that ranged from hate and absolute coldness. “Do you think I did? You know what my answer is.”
For the first time there was an emotional movement on Loraine's face. The candle lights in the room flickered and grew bigger. Loraine's ruby red hair looked like it was made out of fire for a moment but that image disappeared as the lights dimmed down again.
“Evia, the future of our Coven depends on this. You know that you can't procrastinate this.”
“Oh shut up, Loraine! Every time you tell me about all this and my answer is the same every time. I care squat about the Coven and I don't care if we are the only Coven with two grand – witches. You know exactly that we owe this Coven nothing!”
The flames flared up again but ice started to built on the walls as well. “By the bones of our mother, Evia, don't behave like a little child!” Loraine hissed and stood up. Evia followed her movement immediately and the two witches stared at each other.
Loraine wasn't the only witch which was respected and feared at the same time, Evia was as well though in her case it was not so e
