Lux Renatus
Description
The world that Byun Baekhyun lives in is corrupted. Talk of those with superhuman abilities, or Gifts, has everyone in a state of panic and distress. The Trinity, three men who have their own powerful abilities, are said to keep this chaos under control. They are looked up to as rulers, as no one dares to stand against them. Even those with their own Gifts fear them, and try to hide within the normal people in society. Unfortunately, every five years, the Trinity orders that all males between the ages of 16 and 21 come to be tested. Those without Gifts are pardoned. Those that possess them are taken to the Dome for what is called "training", and never heard from again.
Foreword
“Dotavit 23, please step forward.”
It is soundless in the room before finally a young man, assumed to be no older than fourteen, steps forward. His eyes are large, full of trepidation and worry, and his hands are trembling in the glowing restraints clamped around his wrists. He slowly makes his way to the center of the white chamber, gaze darting around as he waits for someone to appear. The quiet continues before the same voice returns, and the boy jumps, startled.
“Do you believe you have progressed?” the announcer inquires, and the boy begins to visibly quiver. He recognizes what this is, and now tears are forming in his eyes, though he nods his head frantically. “Speak, dotavit.”
“Yes!” the boy cries, falling to his knees and clasping his hands together. “Yes, I’ve made progress!” He falls forward, palms pressing down against the pale floor. The tears are streaming down his cheeks now, but they go unnoticed. “Please!” Throughout the next period of silence, one can catch the faintest glimmer of hope in the young male’s eyes as he hopes that he will be pardoned. Such is not the case.
“Dotavit 88, please enter the Chamber.”
The youth pales, and his lips part in horror. He turns himself over, scrambling backwards as he stares at the single doorway in the far corner of the room. The bright lights begin to dim and suddenly a scream is heard, one that pierces the ears and stabs into the hearts of all those that hear it. But no one comes to help. No one ever comes to help. The screaming dies out in exactly four seconds, and when the lights return, the only thing that is seen is the outline of dark smoke, and a figure on the ground. The figure is that of the boy, head turned at an unnatural angle, cheek pressed against the floor, lifeless eyes gazing up at the one-sided glass where his corpse is being observed by apathetic gazes.
