AU vs Non-AU Stories
A Dummy's Guide to AFFAU vs Non-AU Stories
For those of you that don’t know, AU stands for “alternate universe”. It’s basically taking an idol and giving them a normal life (or any life that isn’t one of an idol).
Personally, I like AU stories. They’re fun and gives us a whole new perspective on our favorite (or least favorite) idol. You can also twist the idol’s personality to fit your story. In fact, majority of the stories here on AFF are AUs.
EXAMPLES OF AU STORIES:
- High school romance stories
- Action stories about rival spies or
- Just any story in which the idol is NOT an idol
Non-AU stories are stories in which we write about our idols being, well, idols. We put them in different situations or make them fall in love with someone, but at the end of the day, they’re still idols.
EXAMPLES OF NON-AU STORIES:
- “WE GOT MARRIED” stories
- “Hello Baby” stories or
- Just any story in which the idol is an idol.
To me, Non-AU stories are harder to write that AU stories because you can’t make the idol you write about too OOC. (SIDE NOTE: OOC stands for “out of character”) You also have to put some real life events into your Non-AU stories. They’re kind of like the nonfiction stories of the fiction universe (if that makes any sense).
So what can be categorized as an AU story and a non-AU story?
Your story is an AU story if you answer NO to any of the questions:
- Is the idol you are writing about an idol in the story?
That’s it. There’s really only one criteria (at least on AFF) to determine whether your story is AU or not.
So, as always, here are my rules on AU and non-AU stories:
- AU is for you. You can write basically whatever you want. You want your idol to be a spy? Go ahead. You want them to be a beggar? Do it. It’s your choice and your story.
- Be careful to not make the idols too OOC in non-AU stories. No one can ever write another person’s personality 100% correctly (if you can, then good for you), but try not to make them seem like a completely different person (personality wise). It’s okay to twist their personality a bit, but if you can’t recognize the idol without typing their name or what group they’re in, then that’s telling you something.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
There is no superior type of story out there. For most readers, it doesn’t matter if it’s an AU or not, if you’re plotline is good, then they’ll read it. When thinking up a story, I advise you to pick something that you’re comfortable with. If you think you’re better at writing AU stories, then write an AU story and vice versa. I personally don’t know why I typed up this chapter. Maybe because (at least when I was typing this) I was sleep deprived and the sun hasn’t risen yet, or because I just wanted to. Oh well, what’s done is done.
